Rate this book
When lifelong city boy Kyle ends up stranded by the side of the highway in the middle of the Oregon backwoods, even his fear of rednecks can't prepare him for the brutes he finds in the little town of Nester. Surrounded by leather boots, bulging biceps, and suspicious glares, Kyle has never felt more freaked out and unwelcome in his life. Then he spots Eli, a gorgeous local with gleaming gold eyes and a sly, hungry smile who traps him in a dark corner and makes no secret of what he wants...or what he is. Turns out the moon is rising, and Kyle's about to find himself surrounded by a town's worth of hungry beasts! Eli promises to get the city boy out of Nester alive...but not until he's had a taste for himself!

"He looked like he could rip the world in half."

So, I'm officially declaring myself a Claire Cray fangirl. I really liked Aniki's Garden--great atmospheric writing, excellent tension. She's got great instincts, and I wanted to read more, so I went over to ARe and picked up her entire backlist during one of their rebate sales.

So, this book had the same sort of tense, creepy, but also super sexy vibe that Aniki's Garden did--I think this is something that the paranormal/monster erotica genre has gotten away from--the sense of foreboding and fear. Cray manages it effortlessly (well, effortlessly for me to read, I'm sure she worked her ass off, and it shows). There were some great laugh out loud moments, and some really stellar bits of writing.

Also, that campy, pulpy cover makes me smile.

What a little cracker of a short story, and yes it's short but boy does it pack a punch. I loved it. Talk about sexy, this is so hot you could fry an egg on it! Seriously - this story about a guy driving his friends car out to him and breaking down in a backwoods town full of.......... .... (well read it and you'll find out yourselves), reminded me of one those old American B movies and Claire cray captured the atmosphere perfectly, I could almost hear the ' cheesy ' background music building up to a crescendo as he nears the town after being picked up by the , as he puts it, "cute red neck" ( there's some funny stuff in here too). Then he meets Eli - oooh shiver - and My Oh My that's when the heat turns up to scorching! This was funny, creepy, atmospheric, scary- ish and sexy as hell. My only complaint was I wanted it to last longer. The ending was not what I expected and left me wondering but again you have to read it to find out what I mean. I really hope this little gem doesn't get lost amongst all the other books in this genre because its a shame to miss it. The third Claire Cray I've read and thoroughly enjoyed. Check out Merrick her full length book and you wont be disappointed either. Loved, loved, loved this, and all for .77p. Brilliant! Keeper? Hell yeah.

1.5 stars, at least there was a hairy beast this time. Amazon freebie.

Bostonian dude apparently has never seen flannel and work boots before. Everything out of his mouth was "redneck this", "redneck that", "backwoods", "Hicksville", "hick town", etc.

You're telling me New England doesn't have flannel?! 😅

Rednecklights:

• Underdressed, tired, hungry, caffeine- starved, and stranded by a country highway at twilight, probably two minutes from getting slaughtered by a Sasquatch or a hillbilly or a homophobic salmon or whatever.

• So there were cute rednecks. And I thought it was wild when they proved giant squids were real…

• The redneck didn’t seem to care much, so far.

• Lesson learned: one cute redneck did not guarantee a happy time in Hicksville.

• All right, I mused. Backwoods features: Redneck monsters, sex beasts, good mechanics. Got it.

• Fangs. Boner. Fucking fangs. Hot— god!

Definitely enjoyed this! I'm hoping its length means a sequel will follow.

It worked well for a short, steamy story but I'm hoping to read more about Kyle and Eli together and have their world more developed and explained.

.......................3.5 stars.........................

This story was definitely rough around the edges but it was also way steamier than I was expecting. It was a super quick, fun read and while it didn’t have a whole lot to it, it definitely packed a punch of spookiness. I would say Backwoods Beast straddles the line somewhere between horror-lite and paranormal romance. Which was a delight to read. These are definitely not your average urban fantasy style werewolves and I kinda dig it! This is getting a 3.5 out of five stars. 🐺📚

For such a short story, this has quite an atmospheric wallop to it. And, for now at least, it's free on Amazon.

Rednecks?Werewolf?SexyTime?

Sooo I definitely thought this way just a horror novella.. and it was but with a twist of some sexy time.
Considering I don't typically read stuff like this, I thought that it was still worth the read. The author did a fantastic job with making the characters relatable, which was great. Several times the main characters dialogue made me laugh out loud.

1.5 Was a quite enjoyable erotica story until the werewolf was that's when

I DNF the story animals are not meant to be in erotica keep them out and away from this genre.

Pros
Was well written and well descriptive.
Cons
Werewolf = animal erotica which is illegal to have in any fiction, film, or spoken about uts illegal here and most countries in the world.

Okay, the fact that I went into this thinking it was a novel and not a short story is absolutely on me. Totally my fault for not checking the details first. Still it felt rushed to me. It's sparing on characterization, and it didn't seem that the plot had much impact on the character (I was down for actually-scary werewolves tbh)... Maybe I'm being too hard on it, but it's a bit of a miss for me.

Oh My ~

A very creative, well written and totally naughty story. It started a bit slow, setting up the scenery, so when the time came, it made sense, and kept the flow, just upping the speed. I enjoyed the descriptions, and the touchingly sweet ending.

I found this more funny than anything, but the payphone scene was hot! Some grammatical errors and plot hole, but I expected some issues from only being 21 pages.

“Underdressed, tired, hungry, caffeine-starved, and stranded by a country highway at twilight, probably two minutes from getting slaughtered by a Sasquatch or a hillbilly or a homophobic salmon or whatever.”

Kyle is doing his buddy—and ex-boyfriend—Dave a favor by driving Dave’s car from San Francisco up to Portland.

After ten hours of driving, the car breaks down. There’s no phone service, and it’s dusk.

Kyle is a complete city boy. He is terrified of the country and of small towns.

A nice guy named Joe picks Kyle up and agrees to have his friend Rob get the vehicle towed and repaired.

Kyle meets Eli at the bar, and it’s as if time stops. Eli is handsome and muscular, with hypnotizing gold eyes.

Excellent description, but no lube is sus af. Eli is allegedly huge…

Kyle is relatable narrator. Strong story until the weird letdown of an ending.

“I should lock you up and keep you.”
“Yeah.”

Apparently I bought this back in 2015, and its been hanging out in my kindle ever since... Oops

Anyway this was cute, hot, and packed a lot into just a few pages. I like the urban legend spinoff Cray used here, it actually - ironically - helped extend its own suspension of disbelief required for this kind of story. It just felt ... Toooo short. I appreciate that she didn't try to build a relationship in that short span of time... That would have really been stretching it... I also just didn't find the sex as hot as everyone else seemed to. Regardless it was a fun short story I'm glad I finallygot around to reading!

Tripped over this short on my search for a full length PNR because am in a shifter mood. Far better written than most. But, no lube and an excessive difference (little skinny, nervous, citydwelling human vs big, strong, assertive alpha hunter with fangs) between the two leads made it feel more like an m/f, and in that case why not just write an m/f? Maybe I'm just cranky because I can't find what I'm really looking for and this was short.

Pleasantly surprised

This book kept attention which surprised me being that it was so short. The characters while not completely rounded sufficed. The plot was straight forward with some what of a surprise. All in all I liked it.
