Kennedy has always been one of those presidents I was interested in. (It is hard to live and grow up in Dallas, and NOT know about Kennedy. Although it takes a special twisted sense of humor to drive along the same route, in a convertible and saying to my brother "keep an eye out for snipers. Especially in those book depository buildings...." #BlameOurHumorOnOurFather).
Growing up, I read two of the Kennedy bios, watched the movies and mini-series, and walked the grassy knoll, and been to the Kennedy Assassination exhibit in the building. And I've read a few of the Uchronia books about the Kennedys (what if they hadnt gone into politics / what if the Cuban Missile Crisis had gone Hot / what if Kennedy's older brother had lived).
And last year, for the 60th, I read my late Mom's copy of "The Day Kennedy Died", on the anniversary of the shooting. (For the 50th, I read "11.22.63" by Stephen King - a giant tome of Ichronia).
But this year- an election year (dont get me started) - I wanted to see what a 2nd Kennedy administration would have looked like. And so, I chose to spend today reading (and finishing) this book. (Today is the anniversary of the election day of 1964).
So, what does the book say about things? Well, it looks at what would have happened if the fact it was raining in Dallas had mean the protective bubble was placed on the car. With this slight change, the following happens:
1) Kennedy lives - but is scarred from the experience
2) He wins the 1964 election, but LBJ is not on the ticket.
3) Kennedy doesnt escalate the Vietnam War, but instead, withdraws the troops.
4) The New Deal program of LBJ never comes to play; instead, limited assistance is given to the poor in America.
5) Limited Civil Rights laws are passed - not as much as was done with LBJ.
6) Kennedy has to deal with a Congress that is against him and worse, the immunity that he had from the press investigations are lessen.
7) Things are set up for Ronald Reagan, and not Dick Nixon, to run for President in 1968, and Bobby is no where to be found on the Democratic ticket.
8) Jackie, as the time in the White House comes to an end, tells JFK that their marriage, which really hasnt been a marriage, is not over, but is separating. She wants a life of her own, in a place of her own, and away from him.
So, overall things are so rosy for JFK during his 2nd term in office.
