Paul McKenna is an English hypnotist and self-improvement author. McKenna has written and produced books and multimedia products, hosted self-improvement television shows and presents seminars in hypnosis, neuro-linguistic programming, weight loss and motivation.
And the Hmmmm does not mean yummy, its means "I am thinking" I do not have the disc that goes with this book, so I can only talk about what I have just read from this book.
Its nothing like I expected it to be.
I have had weight problems all my life. I am finally doing something about it, emotional eating was one of my worse things. My life can be so stressful as I am a caregiver, I helped raise our two children and I have health issues myself. So sometimes, life can get overwhelming and I eat.
Or I used to treat myself to something "nice" to reward my misery
Of course, we eat to be sociable, we eat because we have to, we eat because we love the taste, and we eat, well....because we can.
I am not sure if I got a lot from this book. I certainly understood what he was trying to say and I am sure, like he says, hes helped many. Just not sure if this would work in its entirety for me.

I think McKenna presents some good information about emotional eating: the triggers, emotional and physical reactions, and the difficulties faced by those that link food to immediate rewards. His suggestions for coping with this problem are interesting but nothing new. That does not mean that they aren't helpful, and I think putting some of them into practice will certainly help restructure the way you eat. The hypnosis was somewhat strange and i'm not sure I would consider it useful. Perhaps my skepticism prevents me from accepting it entirely.
Overall, it was an interesting read but unless you feel that you could accept the hypnosis and dedicate some serious time to it, I don't think it'll be that helpful.

This book surprised me at how well the author's suggestions worked. Unlike his previous books, this one did not contain a CD. Instead you have to download the various free sessions on your computer or phone. This was a little troublesome for me, but I was lucky that my computer savvy son solved the issue for me.
The author asks that you read the book and then start playing the free sessions, some of them at least once a day for a week. This is where the guided hypnosis really works. It causes something to change inside of you where you suddenly give pause to eating foods you shouldn't, and you actually gain the interest in doing exercise and making the right choices. Your willpower becomes strong and you feel empowered. It truly is amazing!
I have struggled to stick with a program for a number of years now, and this did the trick for me, finally. My scepticism is 100% gone now. Guided hypnosis really does work, and this is a very worthwhile book to purchase and try the recommendations Paul McKenna, PhD gives.
Not only that, there are many exercises and four golden rules to follow; there are simple calming techniques, stopping self-sabotage techniques, and so much more. Thank you Paul McKenna! I am grateful that I purchased this book!
This is a book that is easy to read, full of techniques and advice to control emotional eating. I'm looking forward to using some of these techniques to prevent myself from sabotaging my natural healthy eating by binge eating when I'm unhappy. It's certainly an interesting book but will be one to review properly once I've used the techniques and for a while.
It’s an acceptable book that takes time to get to the point as it spends 1/3rd of the book praising how good it is. Then when it comes to the main point, it serves as a useful resource for thinking one’s relationship with food.
I've yet to follow the exercises so my rating may change, but just reading through this book fills me with hope and has inspired me to give it a go. I've struggled with an emotional attachment to food all my life, and whilst suffering from depression and anxiety, I have reached for food more often and ballooned to being 8 stone heavier than is healthy for my height. While my disability also factors in as a contributor to my weight gain, my attitude towards food and how I eat is the main issue. This book has helped me to not only think about food differently but also my emotions in general and so I feel it will help with my depression too. There are various exercises to try and so I am sure I will find something to work for me, and it reinforces some techniques I learned recently relating to solutions focused approaches. This book was easy to read, explained reasons behind emotional eating, offers techniques to combat emotional issues, advice on attitudes to food (note: no dietary advice per say - eat what you want but follow 4 rules relating to your attitude to food) I heartily recommend it!
Haven't actually finished reading it yet so don't take this review as gospel, but I'm really struggling. When I watch the DVD I've tried to relax my mind and so forth but he tells me to pick an emotion and rate it out of 10, then rub my arms and imagine I'm on a beach or whatever, then rate it out of 10 again. But I'm only imagining I'm bored, I'm not actually bored! So I think I'm doing it wrong. Now I've got to a track on the cd that's asking me to talk to my emotions, and I'm completely lost with that. This is all new to me, will finish the book but if I'm honest for someone that's not done anything like this it's really confusing.
I am finding the trance CD really good along with the exercises. How far he's going to change what I eat I don't know but if it helps me deal with my emotions more effectively it's doing a good job.
After reading Overcoming Overeating I felt it lacked a little structure which is why I'm looking at reading this book. Overcoming Overeating is a great starting point but you need something else to deal with the intensity of 'mouth hunger'. It can be quite overwhelming if you suffer from a lot of anxiety. The emotional side of things (for me) really needs working on. I'm also considering more traditional therapy books... possibly Freudian.
