German historian publishing mostly in the German Democratic Republic.
During the Hitler administration Gossweiler was active in an illegal communist resistance cell. In 1939 he joined the Wehrmacht until 1943 when he defected to the Red Army.
After the war he settled in the German Democratic Republic, where he published about fascism.
After the fall of the GDR, he is mostly known for defending the work of Josef Stalin.
