An awesome freebie for the Kindle recently. The book description caught my eye. After being married for many years and raising two children who are now adults, could there be surprises in store? Mr. Robert Williamson receives a blackmailing note on one of his last nights on the summer island with his wife. When he returns home another note is waiting for him. He does not even open it but places it in his pocket and just moments later he has a stroke leaving him unable to move well or talk. His wife finds the note and shares it with their daughter. A detective is hired. It turns out that Robert was blamed for a murder long ago and someone is setting him up for it in order to get some money years later. Could something that happened to he family back in the 1970's be involved in the 1968 murder mystery? The book kept my focus and interest. Very well written. I sometimes find editing errors in kindle freebies but this was written very well. The book kept me wanting to read more to find out who is doing this to the Williamson's and what the history is behind their son's refusal to be in touch with them for all these years. I gave the book 5 stars!

This is probably one of the worst books I have ever read. Predictable and poorly written, this was the first book I borrowed from Amazon Prime. This was supposed to be a murder mystery but it was really just a feeble attempt at developing unrealistic characters for no real good reason. The mother, Nora, is ridiculous and if she had just been forthcoming in the first 25 pages there wouldn't have been a need for the book. Instead the author relentlessly pounds out Nora to be a weak woman in denial who seems just as nuts as the brother in the book. Oh, and the brother quoting Peter Pan because of repressed childhood trauma while still being a financial super power? Unrealistic. Finally, the character Deborah is an alcoholic who has no idea why she drinks... once again repressed childhood trauma, who was also poorly developed as a character and her problems in the book had absolutely nothing to do with what was supposed to be a "murder mystery".

I got this book free but it's the first one I've read in a long time that was free that was even worth reading all the way through. The story started off well and stayed interesting all the way through. It kept me guessing on how certain details the author wrote about certain characters fit in to the story. But it all came together toward the end. Some parts of it didn't seem to belong in the story and I didn't see the point, but it didn't take away from the story. The only thing I wanted to know, which was never divulged was WHO was the abuser? I think that could have been elaborated on more. It was the main reason of the whole story but was just barely touched on. Otherwise, good job.

Because I'm a sucker, I had to finish this one to find out "who done it" but honestly, I wouldn't really recommend wasting your time reading it when there are so MANY great books out there. The author may have benefited from a good editor, perhaps that would have improved the writing enough to forgive the typos. I suspect that this is the author's first, or maybe second novel and perhaps with experience and maturity he will become a fine writer. The plot wasn't so bad...but somewhat bizzare in some ways...at least for me. I guess I hope that his next novel will suck readers in with it's believability.

This was a First Reads Giveaway win!

I didn't see that coming! Since I don't want to spoil the ending I won't tell you much. This is a story of family, blackmail and murder. I will say I enjoyed it but became a little lost in the details. However, most of my confusion was cleared by the end.

This book was deeper than I expected and multi-layered as each family members' story unfolds.
From the first blackmail contact to the shocking climax, this was a fast paced "whodunit".
I would be interested in reading another case involving Hans Janssen.

A lot of great story weaving in this book. I didn't expect the story to go where it went. However. I thought the ending wrapped up just a little too quickly. I looked forward to getting back to this book each night though and had that "sorry this book is over" feeling when I finished.

Would haven given it 4 stars, if not for the ending. I would have like to learn more about what happen to both John and Deborah.

spoiler alert:
this story is the result of untreated child abuse and trama.
it has the feel of a weird crime mystery. . . until the last chapter.

Glad it was free - an intricate plot was turned into a slog by the overwrought language. The mother was well-rendered, but the rest of the characters were silly caricatures.

Although I enjoyed the book, the story was a bit choppy and disconnected.

Surprising turns throughout this book. Family conflicts, espionage, tragedy, - this book has it all. Keeps you guessing who just about to the end.

Great read!

Interesting characters & well paced story. Sad to see the last page end & not know, "will John & Debora become family again or will he remain lost in his story?"

The plot of this book is interesting but you have to be really patient to finally get to that point, which is when you have read half of it. I even skipped chapters, which is something I've never done before.
