An old rock hound has been killed in Utah’s wildlands, and ex-sheriff Bud Shumway knows it has something to do with black-market dinosaur bone thieves, even though his bumbling replacement, Sheriff Howie, thinks it has something to do with aliens. And after receiving a mysterious envelope containing a weird claw and a set of coordinates written on roll-your-own cigarette paper, Howie is determined to prove himself a capable sheriff, especially since he’s been accused of having a million-dollar voice and a ten-cent brain.
Set at the No Delay Cafe, near the wild and mysterious badlands of Green River, Utah, this mystery will have you laughing, scared to death, and wondering if aliens might really exist. Add in a whacky UFO sect, the cafe owner’s missing wife, a cantankerous and suspicious pilot, and a burned-out mechanic who takes his dogs four-wheeling in a Crown Victoria, and there’s never a dull moment.
In any case, you’ll find out who really killed the old rock hound, and it may not be who you think.
Fourth in the Bud Shumway Series, this book introduces the issue of the theft of rare dinosaur bones. Miller‘s work, as always, informs us of the natural beauty in and around Green River, Utah, while placing the mystery of a missing woman in the black market world of fossils. Bud is pursuing his dream job of melon farming only to be interrupted by Sheriff Howie’s urgent requests for aid. It helps Bud to take his mind off of wife Wilma Jean’s new dedication to smoothies and vegetarian food, severely disturbing Bud’s precious meat-and-potatoes lifestyle. Miller allows the characters to grow and mature, alleviating the boredom of a static series of books. And the realistic presentation of a Southwest sheriff’s life and the crimes they encounter are engaging - no disbelief required. Best of all, the reader gets to live in Bud Shumway’s head for the duration of the book and that is the most enjoyable aspect of it all.
Not a suspenseful mystery but one that makes up for humor
I’m no longer reading for a page turner mystery but a light hearted easy to read clean mystery with a few laughs. I’ve come to enjoy Howie more with each new book. He reminds me of one of my favorite TV characters Eb Dawson of Green Acres. That reflects my age a bit.
If you can enjoy more humor than mystery you’ll enjoy the Bud Shumway series
I have now read the first four of the books in this series. I really enjoy them and find humor in their quirkiness. Bud Shumway the main charter seems to be the only really sane person in his crazy world. The storys are well written with a large number of trists and turns in the plot. Give Bud a try.
Bud is just your average guy who gets himself into some strange situations. UFO hunters, aliens and dinosaurs just to name a few. But the real star of this book is Howie. He finally has some good news to shove into his wife's face after she puts him down.
These are fairly low key mysteries. There is nothing real grave and the chartersvare.amiable. They are great for casual summer reading. I download the mountain desert area which serves as the backdrop. I plan to work my way through the series.
I read half and listened to the first half as an audio book. The story was pretty good, and if you enjoyed the others that preceded this one, you will surely enjoy this too.
I highly recommend the Bud Shumway mystery series of novels especially if one is looking for something light-hearted while offering up well-thought out stories that take place in the country around Green River, Utah. I've got three more books in the series lined up on my Kindle.
Enjoyable tragicomic mystery set in the desert Southwest
Not entirely credible, but who cares? A fun mystery with enough twists and turns to engage the reader’s mind. Unlike some serial novels, this one can stand on its own.
Always fun to read about Bud & Howie's relationship and how Bud keeps getting drawn into solving a crime. I also enjoy learning about this area of Utah. Can't wait to read the book one in this series!
The more I read in this series the more I love it! I laughed so hard at his clicker, the rabbit food and so many other parts that I don't want to give away!
Liking this series, I have family that lives in Price/Helper & East Carbon Utah and this takes me back to summers visiting my Grandmother. I drove thru Emery county to get to her place. This writer reminds me a little of Tony Hillerman. I enjoy the author's voice.
I really like the Bud and Howie adventures but this one seem to drag. It was a lot of them riding around long roads over and over again. And, the deal with Wanda was strange. Will I read another book in this series? Yes I will. I like the main characters.
Bud Shumway is kept busy in this clue packed thriller of Green River and its environs. Even Hoppy and Pierre are on the trail. Have you ever mused of a Ford Crown Victoria (police package edition) versus Toyota EJ40 in off-road performance? How about the appeal of a large bird fossil or a household toss out? Well, you got that and more in this tale set in Utah. As usual, Chinos Miller delivers a story that keeps you going until the last page. I'm a big fan of this series and enjoyed "The No Delay Cafe" most of all. This book has so much going on that I will make no attempt to describe the plot but to say read it, it's really a fun read!
