This charming book is based on the early years of the real life character, Gladys, growing up on the wide open prairies of Canada in the early 1900's. The illustrations are all-important, calm, gentle, very evocative. The quiet, quite isolated way of life, surrounded by nature, is painted in pictures and words. The stories are told in small bite-sized chapters, humorous and loving snapshots of everyday life.
The wording is simple and designed for young children to read for themselves but, for me, it is most suited to the very young who love to hear the escapades of other babies and children and would enjoy this as a picture book with a generous injection of observation from a grown-up!

Gladys is a mischievous little girl who's curiosity often gets the better of her! Growing up on the prairies, the story of Gladys, which has passed down through generations, describes a happy childhood, and the illustrations add to the enjoyment of reading her experiences.
I liked the way the reader is asked to figure things out from the drawing of the chicken coop. The mishap that poor Gladys suffers at the end could have been avoided, will the young reader figure out how?
This is a good story, with some information about the prairies and farm life. Children will enjoy this story, and be given an insight into country life.

Little Gladys On The Prairies is a very sweet story about a little girl, Gladys, born in the prairies of Alberta, Canada. As happy, little Gladys grows up, she explores her beloved prairies around her homestead. As with all little girls, Gladys curiosity and wonderment leads her into learning some tender lessons.

This story completely supports and teaches some simple life lessons in the security of a loving family.

This is the kind of story I would like to see more of, for all children.

Little Gladys On The Prairies is complemented with clear and appropriate illustrations for the readers level. I recommend this darling, sweet, family story for all little girls ages 4-7.

Little Gladys on the prairies is a great book for little kids. If you are a country person at heart, you’ll definitely enjoy the book. There are many little episodes described in the story many mothers and their children can relate to. Little Gladys on the prairies will be a good read for them. The illustrations are perfectly done and complementary to the whole story.

My favorite part of the story is when Little Gladys sees the dog watching the prairie dogs stick their heads out of the holes on the farmyard.

I like that the stories are so believable. The illustrations are beautiful and simple. The stories carry simple ideas or messages presented in a light-hearted way. The lengths of the stories are just right to hold the attention spans of toddlers and young children. The prairies make a lovely backdrop for both the stories and the illustrations. My 2 and half year old daughter really liked it and asked for it to be read again.

What a sweet and very real story. I grew up in rural Kansas and can relate to little Gladys. This story is filled with wonderful lessons about learning from experiences and to remember its always best to listen to your mother!
The story is written very well and the illustrations bring to life the story in its entirety. Highly recommended!
