Psion Omega

Rate this book
Sammy, a fourteen-year-old fugitive, accidentally discovers he has the powers of a Psion.

The war between the New World Government and the Continental American Government has taken its toll, not only on the two world superpowers, but also on the band of resistance fighters stuck between them. As Sammy's band of operatives and civilians struggle to restore freedom and end the war, the cracks of doubt and despair widen, and the walls of resolve crumble. But there is still cause for hope.

For years the resistance has floundered. Now, after Sammy's successful mission to the Amazon jungle, they finally have the data and weaponry needed to join the war against the CAG. Desperate to tip the scales in their favor, the resistance leadership decides on a bold joint offensive.

Meanwhile the Queen hunts Sammy, emboldened by her new anomalies, and certain that by killing him she can end the war in one final stroke. Both know their paths are destined to collide. And when they do, the world will be changed forever.

I have to admit that the Psion series has become one of my all time favorite science fiction series.

In Psion Omega, the final entry of the Psion series, the New World Government (NWG) and the Continental American Government (CAG) continue to battle each other and the CAG is winning. The resistance fighters within CAG territory struggle as best they can to fight back and hopefully in some way even end the war.

But now Sammy has gained allies within the CAG that fear what’s happening with CAG leadership. These allies provided information that might just tip the balance in favor of the resistance and the NWG. But will the cost of using that information come at too great a cost?

Despite the opening chapter’s WTF glimpse into the future, Psion Omega starts out slower than I would have liked. However, after a few chapters the tension and suspense builds to a point where I realized I don’t want to put the book down. Sammy, as he has throughout the series, continues to struggle with the atrocities the war has and continues to force him to commit using his Psion abilities. But what choice does he have when the lives of his friends are at risk? If he gives in to his darker nature will those same friends still love the monster he’ll become?

If you haven’t read this series, I can’t recommend it highly enough. I’ve read so many books where the hero or heroes have superpowers that in the end are just fake and unbelievable. How many books have you read where in the end the hero suddenly comes up with some unknown power to get out of whatever unbelievable situation they’re in? Psion Omega, as with all the Psion books in the series, is not like that at all. The battles, although fantastic and full of incredibly awesome powers, are completely believable. All the characters are real and completely human. I found myself seriously caring what happened to all of them and was definitely not happy when some of them get killed.

Despite the young adult genre, I wouldn’t recommend the series to sensitive readers or readers under the age of say 14. This is mainly due to the level of violence and gore.

I seriously want to go back and read the entire series again just for the pure enjoyment of it! This series is definitely on my “Must Read Again” list.

The Value of a Star: Ratings Explained

It's Complicated

I just committed 14 days to 2420 pages of the five-book Psion Series.

The series has 2564 five-star reviews on Goodreads, and about as many four-star reviews.  There are hardly any one or two starred reviews.

Everyone who read these books loved them.  So, obviously, I loved them too.

Obviously.

Right?

Sigh.

It's complicated.

Here's what I liked.

I wonder when I'll get bored of stories about kids with unique talents being discovered and shipped off to special kid school so they can learn to use their talent to save the world?  Never, I suspect.

What about stories about underdogs overthrowing oppressive governments?  Doesn’t get old.

How about stories about unlikely heroes?  Troubled, imperfect good guys who have to overcome their personal demons before they can save the ones they love?  Sacrificing yourself for your friends? Young love?  Please—give me more! More, more, more!

The Psion Series has it all.  No offensive language or sex either.

I like it.

Here's what's complicated:

First, the writing is unpolished. I’m trying to be polite—I have tremendous respect for anyone that writes, so I hate calling out the writing. But I do call it as I see it.  The writing improves as the series goes on, but those first three books were really hard to get through. Even by the end though, it reads more like a middle-grade book than anything.  Which actually isn’t really that much of an issue…

…except for the other complication.

The Psion series sees an Ender and raises a Rambo. These kids die violently. And kill violently. Really, really violently.

For all of the chaste love and elementary-school expletives, there is an exponential elevation of violence.  I’m talking blood and guts, full descriptions, gore, smells, feels, emotions, no holding back. It’s the weirdest thing.  It’s a middle-grade story with grown-up violence.

What do I do with that?

I WANT to recommend The Psion Series—the story is a lot of fun and I cared about the characters.

I can’t recommend it to my kids because of the strong, bloody, and frequent violence—even though the writing, language, and relationships are perfectly on their level.

I can’t recommend it to my adult friends because the juvenile writing is lame. To be clear, I’m not talking about lack of swearing or sex as juvenile.  I’m talking about the actual writing.  It was just plain hard to read.

You see?

It’s complicated.

So, I’ll just do my job. I liked The Psion Series, but I didn’t like the writing.  I liked the clean language and chaste love, but didn’t like the violence.

If you can look past the complicated and appreciate the good, I think you’ll find a series worth investing in.  If you’re going to get hung up on complicated, you’d better not waste your time.

Happy reading!

Wow. Just...wow.

I'm struck dumb right now. My mind started out loud and hyper-active when I finished and now I’m just deathly quiet. (In the span of ten minutes)
I won’t use caps in this review much, so that you don’t get desensitised, but know that I’m typing and speaking these words with quiet intensity and singleness of min- ohh look, a butterfly...*cough* Right, singleness of mind.

I loved this book, Loved. Every. Single. BIT. This book was amazing, and the one before that, and the one before that. Honestly, this series is in the top three series that I truly and deeply love.

The characters had developed a sense of desperation in this book as things heated up, which was realistic and allowed me to bond with them in desperate times. Some people broke, others pulled through and overall I enjoyed every step of the way from the first to the last. Everyone who died, died for a cause that allowed the reader to move on and let go of them. Though as they were nearing the end, depending on one's state of emotions, one could almost cry.

Honest, I myself felt a sting in the eyes a few times there. If you feel of felt nothing when you were reading the dramatic parts of some of the books in this series your dead inside. Dead.

But now for the practical side of the review. First I should warn you, DO NOT, under ANY circumstances read ANY of these books out of order or just pick one up at book 2/3. It works for some series but definitely not this one, not to mention that oddly enough we seemed to emotionally draw reference to earlier books as if the author was saying,

"Yeah, you already know that this character has so and so problems because you stuck with the series, and it's a waste of time to tell you about the character all over again".

We had a nice progression of the story from where we left off, and all the ends tied themselves up in the end.

It surprised me in a few instances, even though I had put on my thinking cap, (which I use to obsess over small details throughout the book so I'm not surprised by plot twists).

It had good fight scenes, mild wit, humour, DEATH!, destruction, psychological torment,(in a good way) and made you contemplate your mental existence.

I would put it almost on par with Enders Game for psychological contemplation. All in all a good read that I recommend to anyone who isn't squeamish as there was a significant amount of gore, though we didn't dwell excessively on it, though it was prominent. Very.

Five stars, best I can do as my mind is in a fog of elation, not happiness, ELATION!

This was a beautiful way to end such a great series. The characterization was probably the best part--basically every character mentioned was given character development. There were a lot of emotions and often times characters were developed well and then abruptly killed off, which was harrowing (obviously sad) and much more realistic than some novels. The war aspects of this book (and the general series) felt very real to me and overall I loved it.

However, the end (I won't spoil, I promise) made me so disappointed. To say it in a very vague way, the ending appears as if it will end mournful but not completely so, as at the end of the climax something huge and super, super sad happens. However, this ending I had expected would've been perfect because it would be realistic like the rest of the book and would just be satisfied. Instead, Gowans basically undid the ending with no reasoning, explanation, or excuse. It felt as if the beautiful climax suddenly hadn't happened and we were expected to believe it to be realistic when it honestly just was COMPLETELY unrealistic and probably impossible as well (trust me, I read over the last bit several times to be sure and it shouldn't be possible for what happened to happen). The ending was well-written and poetic but didn't stay true to the gritty, realistic, beautiful aspects of the rest of the book. I'm just sad there aren't any other books that can redeem that ending.

Brilliant!

This entire series...I don't know how to describe it in any other way than incredible. You watch as Sammy matures through the entire experience and is faced with intense situations that no kid his age should have to go through. So many twists and turns. So many emotions. I definitely recommend this series to anyone who is even the slightest bit interested and will be revisiting it again in the future.

Excellent finale to this series. I still hate we had to wait so long to get it and then I was in the middle of another series before I could get to this finale. If you like sci fi or fantasy then you will love this series Very, very well done and keeps you on the edge of your seat.

I've enjoyed every book in the series and this thrilling finale is no exception. Plenty of action and new character development. Long Live Sammy!!

Story: 3-4 of 5
Writing: 3 of 5

There are parts of this book that deserve 4 stars and there are other parts that deserve 2 stars. And that can sum up Gowans's writing and story telling capability for the Psion series as a whole.

When Gowans takes his time developing characters and scenes it's awesome. He's really good at getting the reader inside the head of a character and there are a handful of spectacular characters in the Psion series! Really taking the time to lay out a plot or scene, and really exploring a character's motivations are the key points though. There are just way too many (important) characters that are merely props. Names on a page. Shallow "throwaway" characters are fine (although I'd take non-shallow all day long), but the issue with omega is that I feel like I barely know many of the main supporting characters.

The other main issue I have with Omega is that certain parts feel rushed and poorly laid out. There are a few big time jumps where there could have been something. I.E., It's the pacing problem from the first book all over again.

Moving on to the prologue and epilogue. No. Just no. These two sections are easily the worst parts of the entire series, not just Omega. The prologue is just a copy-pasted (word-for-word) section of the climax... placed at the very beginning of the book. WHY!? In my opinion, that's the worst way to build tension, and a very lazy and thinly veiled attempt at foreshadowing. As for the epilogue. It's just kind of bad. It feels extremely rushed and hardly ties up any loose ends. Again, in my opinion, it's an awful way to send off the entire series.

If I had to come up with an analogy for the entire series it would go something like this:
I'm at a restaurant and I've ordered a New York strip medium-rare. When I get my food the steak is great! Not the best I've ever had nor the best cut of meat, but, again, it's great! But my baked potato is underdone... and I seem to be missing my second side dish... and I'd like to order desert, but the waiter is nowhere to be found...

Terrible analogy aside, that's a lot of negatives for this review, but I would still recommend the series. It's entertaining and there are some great moments to be had (read) that will definitely stick with me.

This book is not as good as Psion Alpha, and is also let down by a poor ending, although a better one than book four had.
I almost gave up the series after the end of Alpha, and I only picked up Omega out of completion more than anything. Sammy continues to be less interesting than Walter Byron had been, but there is enough action to keep the plot moving.
Some of the technology was interesting, but the idea of solid holograms was over-used, especially when it's used to make guns that never need to run out of bullets as long as they have power was just too silly for me.
The Fox was given better motivations in this book, and seemed a lot less flat of a character, as did the Queen, and it was interesting to see some more of her backstory.
Still, it would have been better without the epilogue at the end, which served no purpose other than to tack on a happy ending and completely undermine what the book had been building to.

Excellent Series!

I read all five books in one continuous stream and am so glad they were available as such. It would have been hard to wait. The story held me captivated from the first mock battle in the grocery store until the last sentence of the epilogue. There was heart stopping action galore in each of the books with a rich coherent storyline. The excellent depiction of all the characters and their struggles with their gifts at all ages made them all truly alive in my
mind's eye. A wonderful read and kudos to the Author for following his passion and creating this really fabulous saga.

It was an interesting end to the series but the end itself was iffy. I don't see the point in Sammy and Jeffie faking their deaths and no explanation on how they avoided "certain" death.

Sammy saw "the fox" how can he not know Daniel Newhouse is Fox... There should be some openendedness in a series like this, an opportunity for us to imagine how their lives are progressing and maybe not have too many questions answered, but too many things were left unresolved here...

Anyway it was still a decent book but only reason it got 4 stars is because it's the end of an overall great series.

It was a phenominal read and included many cliff-hangers, twists and turns, and a bounty of "aha" moments. The ending was very unexpected: it left a smile on your face and a happy feeling in the pit of your stomach. The only disappointment was that it was the final book in the series. I could not have enjoyed the book more. The plot and the characters themselves were written as if it was real.

Thank you Jacob

I've been waiting for this book for months and bought it the very first day it came out. I liked it very much as it concluded the saga nicely and the quality and richness met my expectations which was pretty high based on the prior books. Great job, Jacob!

Good story and well written

I thought I had the end cold when I started to read. I was so wrong. About 1/2 way through, I said "how predictable" as I knew the ending. I was again, so wrong. Highly recommend the series. Well done!

I think I've come to grasp the completion of this book. I've fallen in love with the world and characters and the writing, it's jarring to think that it's over. The Psion series has definitely been one of my favorite book series and I'm glad to see that it's still unchallenged.

A lot of things happened in this book. I've grown to be a great fan of the changing narrative. It helped add more realism and desperation to the storyline. Especially during the battle, switching from one to the other rapidly- almost like movie clips. The Hudecs' narratives were stoic and really showed the effects of war.

Overall, I felt that the concluding battle was well-written. It was intense, frantic, and more. I liked the tricks and turns, the sorrow and triumph. Characters developed and characters demised, it was a bittersweet tango of life and death.

That being said, I am not sure about the epilogue. I don't know if I missed something, but why did Sammy and Jeffie change their names? It's unclear to me, but are they involved in the training of the Psions like Brickert is? Is Kawaii alive? What happened to Nikotai and Lorenzo Walters? Albert and Marie - are they still involved in Psions? Did Strawberry go into fashion as she threatened?

Even without the epilogue, characters like Cala, Miguel, Rosa, Parley, and Ludwig weren't present as much. Their storylines ended before they began, and I'm conflicted about it. In a sense, it's accurate to everyone growing up and choosing different career paths and cities from the rest of your grade. On the other hand, I've grown attached to them and would like closure.

Back to the ending, though. Why were Sammy and Jeffie pronounced dead, even a statue erected with this information? Who knows they live? I know they talked about having children, despite Sammy believing he would have none, but did anything happen?

Unfortunately school and work got in the way of being able to really sit down and give this book the attention it deserved. I think it was a great conclusion to the story. Although, I do wish we would've gotten a little bit more from the epilogue. In an attempt to avoid spoilers I won't go into details. There are just a lot of characters in these stories and yet I feel like we only know what happened to six of them.

That said, those are really my chief complaints. At first I thought some of the drama was still a bit juvenile, but the narrative does a really good job of reminding us that despite all these characters have seen they really are just kids - teenagers that have been thrust into positions a lot of adults couldn't handle. As a result, I ended up liking the childish romance parts just to remind me who and what the characters are.

I was also really satisfied with the amount of final interactions we got. There were some big time showdowns that didn't disappoint. All-in-all I loved this series and will continue to tell people about it. I look forward to whatever comes out in this universe next.

I waited two years to read this book. Not because I couldn't get it, but because it took me that long to get over Psion Alpha. It was the end to a great series, and I would LOVE to see it turn into a movie, if Mr. Jacob Gowans could be apart of writing it/or something so it would turn out perfect! I will say that the epilogue was... nostalgic.
I am really disappointed that those characters will not live on in another book.

Great ending to an exciting series

Just like the other books in the series this book was filled with plot twists and excitement. Every time I thought I knew what was going to happen it turned out I was wrong. In the end the final showdown didn't disappoint.
I am looking forward to more books from Jacob Gowans.

Excellent finale to the series, and WHAT AN AMAZING SERIES! I've reread Psion Beta so many times, but now I've finally finished the series. I don't think I've ever read a series or book with such great plot line; tension just keeps building over the five books, but there's enough action in every book to keep me hooooooked! Thank you Jacob Gowans for a wild ride through the Psion series.

Great Series

As you read the series, the characters become part of the reader, one becomes part of the team. That feat is what good writing is all about. Jacob Gowans did a great thing with this last book of the Psion Series. The ending is what it needed to be. No complaints here. Sammy lives on in all his friends memories and ours.
