The Farmer's Son

Rate this book
All Wade Reed wanted to do was make it to his brother, Cole’s parole hearing at Corcoran State Prison. But the forty year old environmental planner from LA, never made it. With a bad navigation system and the infamous Tule fog, Wade ended up on a road to nowhere, his BMW stuck in the mud. His gas tank running low, no phone reception, Wade couldn’t think of a worse scenario.

Until…headlights appeared through the gloom.

Twenty-two year old Ayden Solomon worked with his three brothers and father on the almond orchard in the Great Central Valley. Ayden, being the youngest, and prettiest, was constantly the source of amusement for his brothers’ teasing and put up with it, but grew weary of the bullying. At night, when he was alone in his room, Ayden drew superhero comics, a dynamic duo who he imagined would save the world from bullies…bullies who attacked men like him. Gay men.

After unsuccessfully trying to pull Wade’s car out of the ditch, and getting himself stuck as well, the two strangers spend the night in Ayden’s truck, keeping warm, talking, bonding, and sharing things with each other; personal things. Ayden and Wade, although had nothing in common, got to know each other on a very deep level in the eight hours they were sitting in the dense fog, alone and completely isolated.

What had begun as a frustrating trip for Wade, had turned into a gay erotic fantasy with a young stud. But neither man could imagine what would come next, when the city slicker met…The Farmer’s Son.

Wow, just wow! Now that's GA Hauser I love!

The whole summary was like full of my kinks: age difference, class difference - my favorite tropes and the story itself didn't disappoint.

I really loved both guys, I loved how Wade seemed to be the more insecure one, even though he's older and more experienced, but he's fearing that his heart's gonna be broken and he has pretty valid reasons for it. But Ayden's sincerity and innocence little by little removing all doubts Wade's having and teaching him how to put trust in a relationship.

The ending was kinda fairytale-ish, but it was so heartwarming and sweet and awesome - it put a big smile on my face and restored a little of my faith in humanity ))) I really loved this book, highly recommend it!

I used to like this wirter or rather her very early MM days books. These past few years, her stories are just stereotype and bland. Meet on the same day, have sex on the same day, decide to live together on the same day, happy life, happy sex..this sums up the whole story. What happened to the Ayden's family's antagonistic feelings towards Ayden ? All conveniently resolved at the end and everyone get along happily ever after. So shallow and redundant. This is the type of stories which cheapen the whole MM category.

Okay so this was a book where there was a noticeable age difference between the two MC's. Wade (40) and Ayden (22). It's a big gap and most people would hate that, for me it allowed the story to develop nicely and it was what attracted me to the story. It was more a comfort read than anything and it was something I needed.

Out of the two MC's Ayden was my favourite. He was sweet, funny and a ball of energy. The smarter of the two MC's in many ways I fell in love with him quickly and easily. It was so easy to love Ayden and the fact he was so horny and cute made me laugh. He got the hang of sex rather quickly. It made me laugh to see him like that.

Wade. What can I say about Wade? In the beginning he pissed me off. He was such a nice character no he was a really, really mean jerk! I could not decide how I felt about him. I understood his pain and why he felt the way he did, but at the same time it was hard to see how he treated Ayden, his brother and love in general.

Both family drama's had me interested. It was fun to see the direction the story took and how far they were willing to go with the story lines. Ayden's father, I never, ever thought I could like him. I was proven wrong in the best way possible. Even the jerk brothers weren't so bad in the end.

The story has a lot of promise. Some won't like all the "drama". Others will love parts of the story and hate others. It all depends on taste and this was mine. The virginal thing was really well done and for me to say that is good. Very few authors make me think a relationship where only one was a virgin can last.

Highly recommend this book to people who want a good age-difference story.

Wade, A successful but jaded, world weary 40 something from L.A. gets stranded in a remote part of rural California. There he meets (is sorta rescued by) Ayden, the way too sheltered to be 22 years old, youngest, virginal, gay, son of an almond farmer.

I was expecting a pure wish-fulfillment story but was actually surprised when this novel delivered all that and more besides. This is a coming out novel of sorts, a tale of a May October relationship of sorts and even a tale of two families becoming slightly less dysfunctional than they were.

It's always a plus when a book has characters that you enjoy spending time with, and an even bigger plus when a story shows that something you've always thought of as a fantasy maybe might just someday be possible, given the right circumstances.

This was a fun read and I was sorry to see it end. And apparently Murphy's law applies to e-media as well. If you buy an e-pig in a poke you'll never re-read it but borrow it on a kindle loan and you'll be sure to want a copy to keep.

Beware---SPOLIERS!!!

Ok... So the synopsis of this book really played up how much Wade and Ayden shared of themselves in one night of being stranded. Fine, I had to suspend belief in reality in order to buy what came after one night; but like I mentioned, the synopsis buttered me up for that. That being said, I really resent how this story drew me in and begged me to feel hurt and outrage on Ayden's behalf, only to give it this hearts and daisies, watered down, resolution in the end. By the time the ending of the story rolled around, I felt like the author had lost desire to see these characters' stories through and just wanted to get it over with. Ayden's reconciliation with his family felt so contrived and left me with a gnawing sense of dissatisfaction. In the beginning, he felt totally unloved and misunderstood by his family. He felt bullied by his brothers, and ignored by his father. There were examples to support this theory. There was a sub plot that seemed to address the reasons for why he was treated that way. It was never revisited. The sudden HEA felt lazy. This story had so much better potential than was actually realized.

In total, I loved the beginning of the story, but hated the lack of follow through.

This book unfortunately was not to my satisfaction. It started with an interesting idea, with two men coming from two different worlds. The city guy, whose family was very supportive of him while completely shunning the stray son, and the farmer boy, whose life always was miserable in the middle of nowhere with no one to understand him, let alone accept him. Add to that the age gap between the two men and you have a story there.

As I said the idea was very interesting but the way the story unraveled was too unreal. Call me cynical but I just couldn’t handle the whole “I met you, gave you my virginity and fell in love” line. It’s too much, or maybe my romantic side was asleep for this read. They dynamic between the pair are somehow disturbing at first.

Ayden is twenty-two and a virgin, never felt even a touch from another man and when he meets Wade, a stranger, in need he tries to help him, but gets stuck instead. For twenty-two years he’s been careful to not even lay eyes upon another guy so he’ll not get discovered, yet in a matter of a very, very small time not only he confesses to Wade he’s gay, but he goes and narrates his whole life in the farm and all his troubles to a complete stranger. The way he clings to Wade is also beyond my sphere of comfort. In one night Ayden has explored and experimented with his gay stranger, has opened his heart at him and has decided to leave in the morning to L.A. and leave his family behind. Add to this the idea Wade suggests Ayden about his father and brothers and all of the sudden Ayden’s eyes open and… Quite unreal.

As for Wade, he is a grown up man forty years old, has had his share with young ones who have cheated him with other young ones (and this is constantly repeated in the text), he is supposed to be mature yet he pick a kid in the middle of the night and takes him from his family home to keep him in his L.A. condo.

As I said this did not appeal to me and I was completely detached from the main characters. They did not only warm up to me, but I never saw them in the light of “this could happen”. It was like I was reading a contemporary fairytale, a new take on Cinderella. Even the erotic scenes didn’t make me get lost in them, although I have to admit to them being quite funny once the pair settled in L.A. and Ayden revealed his playful side and his superheroes worship.

The end of the book, just like the entirety of it was one of the same. Imagine an invisible fairy Godmother sprinkling pixie dust on everybody and the personalities stuck in a slump for years suddenly were let free. The bullies became loving brothers horsing around, the homophobic father suddenly became loving and caring, a mother that did not exist until not gained a voice and actually had a dialogue scene. And on the other side, parent who for years didn’t care for their son in prison suddenly remembered that they have compassion in them. And I do mean suddenly literally.

Now I understand that if I didn’t mind the whole fairytale approach I might have seen this book in a different light. The moral behind it did not escape me, but in the whole I didn’t enjoy the book all that much.

Really enjoyed this one by Hauser!! And thank God there was no mention of the "Androgynous (story hogging) Mark Richfield." I really enjoyed reading about two new MCs with a beautifully interesting story. The chemistry between the "Clueless Farmer" and the "City Slicker" was enticingly different. Way to Go!

Hot Gay romance

G. A. Hauser is a gifted writer. She knows how to write a story and make it work.

Triggers: Fear of being assaulted, car stuck on lonely road, fog bound

All Wade Reed wanted to do was make it to his brother, Cole’s parole hearing at Corcoran State Prison. But the forty year old environmental planner from LA, never made it. With a bad navigation system and the infamous Tule fog, Wade ended up on a road to nowhere, his BMW stuck in the mud. M+M

Ayden is the gay artistic fourth son of a homophobic family. Father suffering a recent heart attack at 55, Grandfather Tom is 80. At 6 3 Ayden is resented for his height and his mechanical abilities.

The central conflict here is provided by a 22-year-old who has been put down so long by 3 jealous older brothers and a judgmental distant father that he finds it hard to believe that anyone would find him attractive and lovable. And Wade a 40-year-old who can’t believe that a wildly attractive younger man could be faithful to him as a lifetime soul-mate. Ayden even has suspicions that he was the product of his mother’s infidelity.

The family’s almond grove is highly successful and their 6 bedroom home has ensuite bathrooms. The farm is self-sustaining but doesn’t make them rich.

This book has three stages. The city mouse must get his mind around life on an isolated family farm, the country mouse must decide to escape and follow through. The country mouse must adjust to the big city and as the saying goes the other must get adjusted to the me that got adjusted to you.

Ayden is homesick and having difficulty adjusting to the fishbowl that is Hollywood. Wade is worried about the 18-yr. age difference and the threat of losing his “boy toy” to a younger man. Ayden is not comfortable with seeming to be a “kept man”.

This was awful. Not only was the storyline eye-roll ridiculous but the execution was very poor.

The writing was clunky with poorly constructed sentences and the words sounded amateur from the mouth of a seasoned narrator like Derrick Maclain. I felt sorry that he had to narrate such poorly written material.

The sex scenes made me cringe... especially the line "Chewing his way down to his hole", which was used twice in the four hours of this audiobook that I could stomach. If this writer does not know that if anyone is chewing during sex, they're doing it wrong, then I don't know what to think!

The men in the book did nothing but bang for a night stuck in a truck, and then they professed true love by the end of the night and moved in together the next day. This was the extreme of Insta-love and it was so unbelievable- even as a fantasy- that I couldn't even finish the book.

An age-difference (but NOT daddy kink) and culture-difference erotic tale about a gay son of a successful almond-orchard family getting stranded with and falling in insta-love with a professional, older gay man. This is not highly original, but the characters make it interesting and enjoyable. This still holds up well, in terms of feeling current, even though it was published some 7 years ago.

There are some technical flaws in the story and the denouement felt a little too easy. Overall, though, I find it a very good story.

I didn’t enjoy this book as much as the first one I read by G. A. Hauser. It just seemed a little far fetched to me. I liked the main characters and their meeting was fun, but after one night together they suddenly are ready to commit to each other. The last half of the book just didn’t ring true.

I really enjoyed this book! It was a little out there in believability but sometimes that's okay if the story is really well written and I thought this one was!

Ayden is a farmer's son who's been stuck working for his family's almond farm instead of making a career with the comics he draws, gay superheroes Neo Magnay and Booverly... He doesn't get along with his family very well except for his granddad and one day he's out cutting trees to get away from them when he spots some faint headlights in the fog and goes to investigate.

Wade is a city boy from LA who got lost due to his GPS and the incredibly dense fog and then got stuck on the almond farm's back road. Ayden tries to get him out but fails and ends up stuck with him. They spend the night in the truck getting to know each other on a level far beyond anything either of them has experienced and Ayden gets his first taste of what it's like to really be with a man, instead of his imagination.

They decide they want to make things work and from there, Ayden leaves with Wade, much to the dismay of his family and his brothers and father try to make a scene but Ayden gets out of there and goes to LA.

Feeling like a fish out of water at times, Ayden tries to learn hot to fit in in LA but starts to become a little overwhelmed, especially after one extremely terrifying event and decides he needs to go talk to his family to sort things out, which is just as well since Wade needs to convince his own parents to suck it up and go see his brother who made a mistake a lot of year ago and is now in prison. Together, Wade and Ayden start the process of healing their families and the story ends on a good, if not a little premature, note. I think the ending was a little too sugary sweet considering the bit of angst we had leading up to it, it seemed a little to smooth but it left me with the warm-fuzzies so I can't complain too much!

I think between Wade and Ayden, I felt more for Ayden but I also enjoyed getting to know Wade and the age gap was a bonus since I tend to love those sort of stories a lot! Opposites attract, virginal characters, this book had several of my favorite points in a story!

Would definitely recommend!

Good storyline, suffocated by home and family, 22 year old Ayden draws comic book hero's and longs for the day he can leave the family farm. Wade, a mature, cynical 40 year old, gets lost in the fog going to see his brother in prison and ends up in a ditch and the two meet under extreme circumstances. I liked that Ayden took the chance and made the escape and Wade took the chance to trust again. It was a bit of a whirlwind, but l loved they slotted well into each others lives, including Ayden's family eventual acceptance, with help from Wade's parents. At times, Ayden was like a puppy on a sugar rush and could only empathise with Wade in having to keep up with that level of enthusiasm...lol....The ending with the Comic-con event was fun, fitting and rounded off the story nicely. Enjoyable read.

Review: Great read if...you enjoy romance stories, m/m fiction, small time hits big city stories, two words colliding, following your dreams, going after what you really want, first loves, true loves, stories filled with passion, hot sex scenes, graphic sex scenes, family issues, facing yourself, being true to yourself, facing homosexuality issues, and a well deserved HEA.

Side note: It wasn't exactly as amazing as I was hoping for. I definitely fell in love with the two main characters and their families, but at times the story felt like it dragged a bit with the inner dialogue. It was totally worth the shot in the dark I took with it, and enjoyed the spirit as well as the vibe the book radiates. Be aware though, it's not a book for everyone, but tackles very real problems with gay relationships.

I LOVED the characters in this book. They meet when Ayden finds Wade stuck in a ditch in the rain on his family's Almond farm. Ayden has known he was gay for years, but living in a farming town, with a family full of brothers that love to torment him hes never admitted it. Meeting Wade changes everything for him. Wade is so afraid to believe that it can be real with Ayden, he's 40 and Ayden is 22. Why would Ayden want someone like him? But he does, Ayden loves him from the minute he meets him. They're story is so sweet. I really liked the ending, and they were eventually able to work it all out. I have to read more from this author.

Delicious!!

It's a bit of a Cinderella fairy tale at first and I was worried that was the direction it would go but the author did a beautiful job of turning into a heartwarming and sexy read.

I read another reviewer stating they didn't think the family scene was believable but I disagree. Ayden shocked the hell out of them by disappearing overnight only to return to announce he was gay and leaving to move to L.A. with a stranger. Of course they were angry and awful things were said and done. Returning with Wade's parents so everyone had to be rational was great.

Ayden and Wade together... Oh My! Hot!! I fully intend to check out more works by this author. Yum!!

Before reading that book..once i was going through the reviews..and someone wrote that it was like a fairy tale novel and especially the ending..and i very well agry with it..both wade and ayden were adorable with eachother..
and i could totally understand wot wade was feeling about their relationship because he was a LA boy and he have seen or hell experience when young guys left him for the guys of their age..
But i love how ayden was in love with him..
So..overall i like city guy and farmer's son story..

I would recommend it to all light readers..
once in a while we should read these types of light reading books..u gave u smile in the end..

I liked this book. If you're into May/December insta-love, go for it! Wade is traveling in the Central Valley of CA when he hits tulle fog, listens to his nav and gets into a ditch. Ayden (said almond farmer) tries to rescue him but his truck slides into ditch as well. Ayden & Wade talk the night away (with some sex in the truck's front seat) and decide to go to LA together. (Other stuff happens, too, but I'm not saying anymore!) Ayden draws gay superhero comics and all ends happily! Eventually.

I think I took this book a little too serious in the beginning. I had difficulty with virgins falling in love, age differences of the main characters, and men not loving each other from sexual position incompatibility. Once I let go of all that, I thoroughly enjoyed myself and just read the book. It reminded me of Cinderella complete with evil brothers. How could you not like a fairy tale with a happy ending.

Started out strong, the ending needed to be more developed. I was able to suspend disbelief and take it for what it was. Several emotional moments that were well done, but then the story petered out. Bonus points for the cover-yum.

I've reed this story twice now and i just absolutly LOVE IT!!!

The characters are well written. The arising conflicts are believable. The story does movie quickly since they fall in love after one night ....but if your a reader that just loves that gullable, rosie, romance this is a definite read. For me, this is a book i pick up when i want a story to lift my hopes in finding the "right guy" for me.

The age difference didn't bother me. My husband and I have the same gap, so I know it can work. Wade is a bit prissy at times, but that makes him more human and realistic. This is a compelling story, with flawed likable characters. My only niggle was the later reaction of Ayden's family. I found it unbelievable, but not so much that it spoiled this enjoyable tale.
