As a woman who is eagerly learning of new weight loss strategies to fend of the curse of 'middle-age spread' and 5 newfound pounds, I have been reading up on how the body processes foods we ingest. From what I've read I can definitely agree with the ideology that carbs turn into sugar and they are what creates stubborn weight gain when eaten in excess. Excess doesn't necessarily correlate with eating large amounts of food, more like the amount of sugar that is in even a reasonable portion. This book gives some good insight into how the process works as opposed to low-fat and low-calorie diets. Although I do feel the '100 gram' restriction is pretty small, there is much to take from this book for a better way to eat, tweaked with your own experimenting where you can include a little higher carb count and still live healthy and lose weight gradually and keep it off as a lifestyle.

I found his principles easy enough to understand, but the recipes were boring and made no sense--to whit...why would you want to follow this plan when there are so many more out there?

As I begin to struggle with pre-diabetes--which is actually a carbohydrate metabolism disease--I am looking for diet ideas to implement in my life. I thought this book was well written, easy to read, and not as extreme as some other books I've recently read. The author also gives food lists and recipes. Very helpful and very practical.

I really enjoyed this book. It's simple to follow. Provides you with a shopping list. I tried it and it worked for me. I lost 15 lbs in 2 weeks. I didn't realize how much of my diet was full of carbs. GREAT book!

I don’t read diet books, but I found this short audiobook at the library, and thought I would try one. I probably picked the wrong one. The audiobook covered about what I expected. Of the three CDs in the set, the first two went over what the author finds wrong with other diets. The third CD covered the diet, which really was to limit (specific) sugar-based calories to 100 per day. Sounds like a lot of work if you are tracking these things manually. Unfortunately, the publishers of this audiobook decided that three entire chapters would be withheld from audio, and only made available as PDFs. The publishers apparently forgot that people buy audiobooks in order to listen to them, not to read them. While there is certainly some content that is better read than listened to, and in this case that might have been these chapters that actually gave details on how this diet works through recipes and menus, I was left after finishing the audiobook unable to determine if the author had a point or not. For all I know, he could have told you to only eat eye of newt. In cases where the content may be unsuitable for audio, generally where there are long lists, extensive photos or charts, or recipes or Web URLs, publishers would do their readers a favor by providing an audio summary of the extracted content. Authors really should push back if the audio production of their work gets this kind of treatment. The format of this CD set should be listed as partial e-text with abridged audio. Book was going to rate between 1 and 3 stars if I could have listened to all of it, but the audio version gets a 1.

I don’t quite believe in the reliability of this author. Let me elaborate:

While the two chapters offer great information about the evolution of diets in western society and while near the end he provides a list of foods and how much sugar calories they have, everything else in the book is just not for everybody. The book basically sells the idea that you will lose weight without much effort on your part.

In chapter 4, he proposes a four week diet plan. The options are very restrictive. If you are a vegetarian now you will need to eat meats to lose weight so that you can reduce the carbs intake without going hungry. If you leave meats out of your menu be prepared to be famished because the little portions suggested won’t do much for you.

The motivation chapter felt like a waste of paper

Then the author claims exercise won’t help you lose weight. Sure? If you explain the right reasons i will believe it. However the sources he quotes for this conclusion are the same sources he denounced earlier in the book as providers of poor diet advice. But we are to trust them when it is convenient for the author to make a point?

In short he pretty much challenges how people see diets and this “original” view on diets is bound to make his book a successful breakthrough even though he lacks research and the studies cited are flawed in the nature. How can you make a study in 27 athletes and come up with a conclusion about exercise and weight loss. 27 is too small a number of subjects.

Labai gluminanti knyga.

Good introduction to how macros work in the body and for those who are ignorant in carbohydrate knowledge or low carb lifestyles.

However, the plan of tracking said macros and the method of figuring out those numbers via nutrition labels is immensely convoluted. In short, more than your sugar calories matter. The content of food from which you receive those calories is much more important. Also, the claimed amount of weight loss you'll achieve in this time frame will mainly consist of water weight loss, not fat at the start, as higher carb diets retain water weight in the average person. Once fat adapted, you will begin fat loss, dependent upon the amount of weight you need to lose.

If you want to track your carbohydrates, this is better:

* total net carbs (Carb number on nutritional label, minus the fiber number on nutritional label = total net carbs in that food labels recommended serving.

Time and money saved.

I read one of this author’s previous books in 2019 so I gave this one a try when I saw it come up in my recommendations.

Save yourself the time and just say no to this one.

I can’t mess with anyone that “advises” to stay away from fruit- especially with summer coming- and anyone that says “one thing that exercise isn’t effective at is helping you to lose weight”. I won’t read anything else he writes.

I just finished reading the book so I haven't started the regime. It seems doable and I am looking forward to doing it. I believe this book is very well written and should be understood by anybody.

It's relatively easy to read, and none of the information is hugely surprising, but there's a four week meal plan to try as well as a lot of background information.

I won't rate it until I've given it a try though.

Not be confused with the book based on the TV show of the same name. This is a great companion book to my favorite book (besides the Bible), 'The Case Against Sugar,' by Gary Taubes (who is Cruise's mentor in this book). A great plan to transform your eating habits painlessly.

Great Ideas

Great ideas for cutting carbs/sugar. Love the freebie list and the basic premise of meat and veggies. Your body goes through a MAJOR withdrawal shift in the beginning, but feels so much better with the increase of veggies!!

Read it and try it!

Compelling points but more importantly it works. Furthermore, after about 2-3 days, my energy level boosted and stayed very consistent.

Starting this program - let's see how far I can go.............to fit into some loved clothing.
Low or NO SUGAR - Low or NO CARBS ........ my new mantra....... the muffin in the mug breakfast was semi-good......
BUT up to 2 glasses of red wine a day might be the ticket. -Noticed that right away on the meal plans. A little treat of Pinot Noir.....HAHA

The traditional advice we get whenever we want to lose weight is : Eat less, move more! It works but sometimes its not effective for everyone! this is what Jorge Cruise explains in his book. Counting calories is not the ultimate solution for losing weight and maintaining long term health. Its not about the quantity of the food only its also the quality of what you are eating which most of the people don't consider it nowadays. Jorge Cruise Philosophy of losing weight is: you don't have to count the calories of Protein and fat, just count the calories of sugar/carbs you eat in your day which should not be more then 100 calories per day as the main cause of gaining weight is the high level of insulin in our bodies! Once we can control the production of this hormone, our bodies are more capable of releasing extra fat and losing weight.

Jorge Cruise introduces his book with the history of gaining weight as people started to get obese gradually in the Era of Agriculture when the ancient people started to process raw wheat to flour & the formation of sugar from sugarcane. At that point of time, our eating habits started to change by shifting from Protein & fats to consuming large quantity of carbs. After that, Jorge explains briefly what does sugary calories means, how we can count it and how we can maintain our new food habits without consuming high calories of sugar/carbs.

Personally, I have enjoyed reading the book as I was not aware about many nutritional facts and info, However, adopting Jorge's philosophy of consuming only 100 calories of sugar/ carbs would be effective but not in a long term. at end, our social life style has changed comparing to before! Balancing your food and your MACROS will show you good results! I have lost 15kg of fat and I was eating 500 calories of sugar/carbs per day! Nothing is impossible and you can lose weight in different ways. but it depends on you if you want to lose fat fast or gradually!

Pretty much half of the audiobook is in pdf format, which never open for me when I borrow audiobooks from the library, so aside from the recipes/meal plans, I can't really rate the other information that was in the book.

Still, the first half of the book largely covered history and went over the biology and chemistry of (supposedly) why the author's way of eating in this book works, and that was entertaining enough, since a lot of health books skim over those parts.

I haven't tried the diet, but just from how most diets go, the subtitle (lose up to 18 lbs.) is likely not very realistic for most people and just tacked on to get more people hoping for quick fixes to pick up the book. Certainly an understandable practice (all these health experts *are* trying to get you to buy their books), but all the same it always feels rather shallow.

It was so interesting that this book showed how history effected food studies and the science that was used in America. I'm also glad that Jorge also included a section on how corporations who depend on sugar consumption to remain profitable use money to sway people in power to believe that sugar isn't bad for us. It's only logical that they would keep the evils of sugar from the public as much as possible. I loved that a calorie is defined in this book I always wondered what exactly one was, haha! I look at them so much differently now! This is a low carb diet book so a lot of this has been said before but this book explains it all in simple terms :)

I've already started cutting my sugar this morning at coffee with just milk. I liked the information about sugar and the history of diet throughout the ages. I also enjoyed listening to how sugar affects the body and how it's processed throughout your body. There were some good motivational ideas in this book and I look forward to cutting back on my sugar. I would recommend this book to anyone that is interested in their diet and information on health. This book does not talk much about fitness only at the end on the book. I'm not sure how I feel about what he said but it was good information.
