Target: Point Zero

Rate this book
To save the planet from a crazed terrorist, the Wingman turns to the stars
It's been years since the Soviet Union used its last dying breath to rain nuclear annihilation upon the United States. Now, freedom's greatest enemy is no longer the entire Russian government; it's a single Russian man: Viktor Robotov, a demented genius, is an expert at inciting mayhem. Twice he has manipulated global politics to produce catastrophic wars, and twice the pilot Hawk Hunter has thwarted him. But Robotov's latest scheme will force Hunter to fly higher than he ever has before--all the way to outer space. On a state-of-the-art Russian shuttle, Robotov launches himself into orbit, planning to collect the derelict laser satellites left over from the so-called Star Wars defense system. When he returns the satellites to Earth, he plans to shower death upon mankind. But he has to land first--and the Wingman will be waiting for him. "Target Point Zero "is the twelfth book of the Wingman series, which also includes "Wingman "and "The Circle War."

Target: Point Zero is the twelfth volume in the ongoing Wingman pulp-inspired serial featuring Hawk Hunter fighting for American freedom in the wake of the apocalypse. The first eleven books were published by Zebra with "Men's Adventure" printed on the spine as the category, and Pinnacle followed suit when they took up the series with this one. They also kept the same style of cover; an aerial battle as seen from Hawk's cockpit as the point of view. They're well-written and over-the-top tales with larger than life characters facing impossible odds with nearly magical machines. This one borders closer to military science fiction than the earlier ones; Hawk tries to keep his arch-enemy, evil nemesis Viktor Robotov, from returning from space. Lots of fun, bring your own popcorn.

I enjoy the Wingman books. You always know that Hawk will find a way to win the battle, free the girl and usually do it in a improbable, more like impossible, way. This book is no different. The end of the book is a typical Hawk Hunter finale and one that you can’t put down. The three star rating is more about the beginning. The disjointed nature of the beginning of the book almost made me pass on this episode.
I’m not sure if Mr. Maloney meant for the beginning to be so disjointed or it was just my impression of it, but it took me more out of the story than any previous book has. I enjoy the fast pace and improbable nature of Hawk’s story and this book didn’t hit my typical expectations.
Having said that, I will still continue and enjoy the next book in the series. Hawk’s exploits are always fun to follow and I look forward to the next book in this series.

Rated it 3 stars. This has been a good series but this book slipped a bit and a bit silly and far fetched.
