Three entertaining suspense stories in one book. I think my favorite was Bougainvillea by Heather Graham. It had a soap opera feel. I enjoyed the other two as well. I prefer their individual novels though.
i am not going to rate the book, just yet, i did read the first short story. and i will tell you this, it was like reading a script for a daytime soap opera, rally didn't care for it, as by the 3rd chapter i figured what was going on, and was right. Don't like reading stories, where they hurt animals. will give another review when i get done with the second story. ........ (Bougainvillea)
Now this second story, was great from page one of it to the last page it really kept you wanting to read. It had the feel of suspense to it. This second story didn't take me as long t read as the first one. it was about a stalker, and who doesn't love a stalker novel. If i had to rate each story individuality I give this one 5 stars and -3 stars to the first one......(Shelter Island)
Finally got done with the last short story in this book, This one was equally as good as the second story(shelter Island) I would say this was kinda suspense with a splash of romance in it. I liked the two main characters in the story, but felt that the whole story would of been great on its own, more background on the two main people would of been great. It just started out with the female character already undercover. I would of liked to know more of her story, why was she doing this undercover job, Did it have personally anything to do with her ect. And on the Male character i would of like to got to know him better also. such as . how long was he on the force, why did he feel he had to help the "mermaid" as he called her who washed up on shore . It ended up all working out for them in the end .(capsized )
So to give a review on the whole book, I would give it 4 stars, and them are for the second and last story, the first story shouldn't of even been in the book, that way story 2 and 3 could of been longer. If you read this, Skip the first one. its dull and boring. But the second and third one are written good, and they hold your interest in it. Kudos to the two authors who wrote the two short stories.
3 authors, 3 stories.... Heather Graham i rated a 5/5 with Bougainvillea, after 20 years Katherine, aka Kit returns to florida where her roots are, to only meet the man of any woman's dream David at the hospital where her dad stays. It was his mission to bring her back to bougainvillea, her dads last words were Bougahinvillea, hwat did he mean? well written.
Next was Carla Neggers shelter Island and i give this a 3, Dr Anotonia is a well-respected doctor in the hospital where she works and finds out that there are 2 men that like her, one is trying to save her the other is stalking her, will Anotonia ever find out whom she can really trust, I rated this a 3/5.
Capsized by Sharon Sala i rated a 4/5 Cover is blown, with DEA agent Kelly Sloan, the Mexican drug lord finds out her real identity and after she escapes from a 3 day beaten, with no food in her stomach she manages to wash up on the beach to meet the handsome Texas RangerQuinn, he has fallen for her love at first sight, but does protecting the woman he met keep him out of harms way, or does trouble follow Kelly? who else will get hurt and do they blame Kelly?
I loved the ending of Heather GRaham's and Sharon Sala's stories, almost ran out of kleenex
Only read the one story by Heather Graham, Bougainvillea. Would have given it three stars but when an author sets up a character list that is an extended family and explains who is who and then on the last three pages completely messes up the family relationships by putting the wrong character's name in (putting in the nephew's name rather than the half brother's name) totally ruins the storyline. Someone needs to seriously proofread some of these stories before they go to print.
I really liked 2 out of the 3 stories. the Heather Graham story was the worse by far but luckily the other 2 authors helped the book out tremendously. if reading this book, I would skip the first story all together. sorry...
I think they were trying to have something for everybody in this book but the stories are so different they just didn't mix well. The first story bougainvillea was a little on the predictable side 3 stars, shelter island wasn't very realistic and comes in the forget it five minutes after you read it category probably 2 stars but I did enjoy the Sharon Sala one at the end 4 stars, yes it was a bit far fetched (being able to escape from a boat and kill several people after days of torture is never going to happen, nor is the average drug dealer stupid enough to keep someone alive that long) but the action kept coming reminded me of the rizzoli and isles books with a gutsy female lead, bit cliched in places but I guess to a certain extent all romances are. Usually Heather Graham packs a little more punch than that, I love the Harrison Investigations and Krewe of Hunter series and this one definitely not up to her usual standard but will definitely keep an eye out for Sharon Sala books.
A quick read filled with dysfunctional family, secrets, and mystery. David and Kit are a wonderful couple who have their troubles, but love prevails.
Shelter Island by Carla Neggers 5 stars
Does Dr. Antonia Winter have a stalker, or is she imagining it? She heads to Shelter Island to sort through things and distance herself from her boyfriend's political campaign. Hank Callahan notices Antonia appears anxious, and he cancels some appearances to find and help her. Antonia's stay on Shelter Island is hampered by an incoming hurricane and two unexpected guests. This is an easy read that is suspenseful and entertaining.
Capsized by Sharon Sala 3 stars
So much potential, but fell short. A quick, easy read, but very predictable. Some points are unbelievable.
Bougainvillea by Heather Graham- 3.5 stars I have only read short stories and now this novella by Graham and have loved every one (Well this was borderline love, and at the very least could be called lust ;D). I keep saying that I must read one of her full length novels, but as of yet I have not...so again I will say I must read something of her length work (Anyone with a rec?). I felt like there were to many characters for such a short story and that at times it was difficult to remember who everyone was without fl;ipping back a few pages. I feel she had a good enough plot and characters that if she had taken the time of a full length novel that she could have turned this into a 4 star story. A very nice mystery ensues with a group of both likeable and unlikeable characters...a nice blend of romance....but who is/are the killers, and who is her lover??? A very fast paced ride...again with more charcter and plot development this could have been better IMHO!
Shelter Island by Carla Neggers- 3.5 stars I have not read anything by Negger's or even heard of her prior to this book. This is a cool story about paranoia or a stalker? The plot was fast and developed steadily, the romance...ehhh didn't resonate with me, the characters ehhh again they didn't connect with me. I didn't like that a seemingly smart person would do such stupid things...hmmm I am being stalked! Let me go to an isolated Island with no phone lines or cell reception and see if I am??? Her super hero boy friend and his buddies seem a little to polished and well super for me. The characters were not unlikeable, I just didn't like them alot. The story itself was a very decent suspense thriller, but the romance didn't work for me in this one.
Capsized by Sharon Sala- 4 stars This was IMHO the most enjoyable novella in this collection. I have never heard of Sala, but hope to rectify that shortly..not sure what but something reminded me of Jeffery Abbott. This was a super cool story about a DEA undercover agent, who gets her cover blown. A very good tale of escape, rescue, romance, betrayal, duplicity and running for their lives ensues. My only disappointment was towards the ending...If such a trump card existed why wasn't it just played from the begining..Unfortuantely that dimished the story for me which up untill then was off the charts. A great story with a mediocre ending!
2 for three. The last story by Sharon Sala was the best at 4/5 - The plot was good, an undercover DEA agent is found out and has to go on the run. Good suspense, plot & character development in a short story. I like it when the female lead can take care of herself. The first story by Heather Graham was pretty good too, 3 1/2 /5. Great writing style. I liked the mystery & surprises but felt there were way too many characters for such a short story. Things felt a bit underdeveloped, and I suspect a full length novel from Graham where there is time to flesh things out would be good. The Carla Neggers story wasn't my cup of suspense. The majority of the story was from the perspective of the psycho stalker which in itself could be really good (ever read "What was she Thinking" by Zoe Heller...) but in this case just didn't work. I'll probably check the other two authors out in their full length novels.
This is a great group of short stories by some popular female writers. All three stories are of the suspense/romance variety. I'm a big fan of Heather Graham, the other two ladies a had not read before but will be looking for them in the future.
"On the Edge" is a collection of three novellas, "Bougainvillea" by Heather Graham, "Shelter Island" by Carla Neggers and "Capsized" by Sharon Sala. All three are fast-paced, entertaining reads. I've read so many books by these great authors and have enjoyed every one of them.
Romantic thriller... Interesting.... I liked Heather Graham's story... The other two were not as good.... Heather Graham's Remines me of the book/movie Rebecca....
Good book 3 different authors about women who overcame their circumstances with the help of their males at their sides. And also fighting for themselves too.
