Review: Good summary of the vampire myth - doesn't talk down to the kiddies; but needs to have the typographical errors fixed - especially since this bugger costs $27.
Quality juvenile non-fiction, particularly on the subject of myth or paranormal belief, is hard to come by. Among those I've research this week, this book was one of the better examples of a balanced approach to a extra-scientific subject. However, the writing was quite repetitive in the opening chapter, causing me to lose interest almost immediately. The layout of the book was crowded and confusing, and several times I spent long minutes trying to figure out where the text from one page continued on the next. Not a pleasant experience, and not very user-friendly. I did find some evidence of research and an overall thoughtful presentation of the chosen material, though it did seem a bit vague and short on details at times.
Great book for teenagers. It covers the entire vampire history in simple and comprehensive language. It made vampire interesting, and funny. However, the idea is clear: dead things are bad!
