Tess Thompson Romance...hometowns and heartstrings.
Tess Thompson is the USA Today Bestselling and award-winning author of contemporary and historical Romantic Women’s Fiction with over 60 published titles. When asked to describe her books, she could never figure out what to say that would perfectly sum them up until she landed on, Hometowns and Heartstrings.
She’s married to her prince, Best Husband Ever, and is the mother of their blended family of four kids and five cats. Best Husband Ever is seventeen months younger, which qualifies Tess as a Cougar, a title she wears proudly. Her Bonus Sons are young adults with pretty hair and big brains like their dad. Daughters, better known as Princess One and Two, are teenagers who make their mama proud because they’re kind. They’re also smart, but a mother shouldn’t brag.
Tess loves lazy afternoons watching football, hanging out on the back patio with Best Husband Ever, reading in bed, binge-watching television series, red wine, strong coffee and walks on crisp autumn days. She laughs a little too loudly, never knows what to make for dinner, looks ridiculous kickboxing in an attempt to combat her muffin top, and always complains about the rain even though she chose to live in Seattle.
She’s proud to have grown up in a small town like the ones in her novels. After graduating from the University of Southern California Drama School, she had hopes of becoming an actress but was called instead to writing fiction. She’s grateful to spend most days in her office matchmaking her characters while her favorite cat Mittens (shhh…don’t tell the others) sleeps on the desk.
She adores hearing from readers, so don’t hesitate to say hello or sign up for her newsletter: http://tesswrites.com/. You’ll receive an ebook copy of her novella, The Santa Trial, for your efforts.
THREE STARS--Riverbend is the second book in Tess Thompson's River Valley Collection. Annie is a thirty year old single mom with an abusive past. Her ex and father of her son, Marco is out of prison and has a vendetta against Annie. He's found her and he wants revenge. Annie has moved to a new state and small town of River Valley. She's reinvented herself as head chef of the town's new go to restaurant, Riversong. As Annie's getting more press, a new resident is cold, distant, rich and elusive, Drake. He's wealthy and recently built a big mansion on a cliff. But he has plans on being a recluse and wants his meals prepared weekly by Annie. And for $10,000 a month for cooking once a week, I was ready to bring my frying pan for the man. But the press that Annie's been getting has made her an easy target for Marco.
The story is promised as a suspenseful read and it was. Marco and Annie's rough beginning in the prologue set a strong distaste for him and hope for Annie. This woman went through some serious lengths to be rid of him. I wanted to high five her at this point because she was so brave. And she made it through...barely. And if she maintained this spunk throughout the book, I was so sure it was going to be an easy 5 star read.
Annie has her 10 year old son, Alder (I am not a fan of the name but he was a sweet kid) who she tries to protect. And the town of River Valley is truly a great supporting cast for the story and Annie. You know the saying 'It takes a village to raise a child'? Well they take that to heart in this book. The romance (oh there's romance but we'll get to that in a bit) took a back burner to the love of the town and wanting to make it a great thriving place for people to want to visit.
Plus there's so many secondary characters, it was beginning to become difficult with keeping track of them all including their professions. An example there's a paramedic/firefighter/singer/songwriter - a first for me - he's the star of book #1 of the series in case you're interested. And the characters loved to comment on the town's river which drew them into love or thought or hearing their name, it was kind of a reflective point. But I'm not feeling the way they were so now we're down to 4 stars.
It's a delicate balance romantic suspense (I've cut my reader's teeth on many of those once I began this genre) And this story was nice. Annie did lose her spunk in River Valley though a lot of this book. (She gained it back somewhat towards the last 10% of the book which is how I ended up with my rating) She's on the run from Marco. Why is she allowing herself to be included in the restaurant's publicity? She also has an eating disorder that was never fully explored. She said it was because she likes to have the control of not eating. And I get her using food for comfort for her depressing childhood. But if she has the wherewithal to set up Marco so she could leave him, what happened in the ten years since she left? She has the men of the town telling her she needs to eat, she uses her weight as a crutch to keep men away. I-I'm going to quit while I'm ahead.
And Drake? He claims he's damaged goods. He has anxiety attacks, can't stand to be touched and is like ice to all. He takes Annie and Alder in his reclusive home to protect them. (read the book to find out why) He's secretive and has had some major tragedy in his past. It's easily guessed and is sad. He wants to be a hermit but he just can't seem to not be living in the town of River Valley and having Annie and Alder stay with them. So the ice man cracks and falls for Annie, as does Annie. And they have a HEA though their issues with insomnia, anxiety, eating, etc. are not as fully resolved as I would have liked them.
Some niggles of doubt for me: an error with Alder's age. His mother was two months pregnant with him in August 2003. The story begins Spring 2013 and Alder is stated as just turning 10...do you see the discrepancy with his age? He should have been 9 years old. It's a minor detail but I am a stickler for ages.
Another niggle, Drake sometimes spoke AT Annie instead of TO Annie. He would treat her like a child at times: the point where he told her what to wear to bed, I wasn't a fan. Drake is not necessarily who I would have chosen for Annie - he ran hot and then cold a lot due to the traumatic events in his life but he could be rude. He definitely was in the beginning of the book. By the end of the book, I tolerated him.
And the way nothing was done with Marco's actions during his harassment and stalking: Marco would leave harassing voice mails and even wrote a threatening letter once. Annie was told nothing could be done unless Marco did something to her. I thought the messages and letter was enough of a case and proof for violating parole, but maybe that's just me.
Was it a bad story? No. It was nice. The townsfolk...nice. Alder...nice. Annie and Drake together? *shrugs* I guess they're alright.
Will I read the next book? Erm...no. Bella, Drake's baby sister is the star of that one and she is a total TSTL heroine. I don't want to go down that path with her. (An example - she knows Annie is trying to hideout at her brother's and she gives her ex-lover the code to get into her's brother's compound...it's one of many things she did to piss me off) Annie might have visited the TSTL campus a couple of times but she did not reside there.
I think fans who enjoy mild romance, a big ensemble read and some suspense thrown in would best enjoy this book.
I was so excited to read these two back to back! The first, as you can see above, I thought was amazing. Well, the fabulousness of Tess Thompson's writing doesn't stop there. But in this case we learn more about the fabulous chef, Annie.
The plot starts out right away! And this is one reason that I love to read a series, you already know the characters, and in this case the town. I started this knowing that I was in love and hoping that this was going to compare to Riversong. I was wrong. It exceeded my expectations.
Firstly, Tess Thompson's writing is always top notch. This is the third book that I've read from her and honestly I'm not that big into Contemporary, but she has a magical way of writing that makes you want to learn more about all of her wonderful characters. Seriously, it's like magic.
Secondly, the characters! Ohhh... I just love this set of characters! I was so happy that they were all in the same town, so I already felt like I was visiting my family.
Drake is an interesting guy. I had my eye on him. I was hoping Linus was going to tell him off but Annie and even her son put him in his place!! I did an arm pump (seriously, I am that much of a nerd) and just loved that part. But sadly, it's Marco that is the real threat in this, even with Drake's pretentious ways! Although I did start to soften up to him once you really get to know his story.
Again, as if I have not reiterated enough, this story is top notch. I love the way Tess writes and can NOT wait for book three! I just hope she plans on doing more than a trilogy because I just can't seem to get enough of this little town. I think I may need to move!
Recommended to absolutely everyone that loves a great, feel good, growth story. Loved this one!
Riverbend is book two in the River Valley series and is a Contemporary Romance written by Tess Thompson. I received this eARC from the author in exchange for an honest review through Tasty Book Tours.
4 Starry-Night Stars! Second Time Around’s A Charm! I Really Enjoyed This Read!
The Review: This is the second book in the series and a much better read than its predecessor. Whereas I felt the first book was a good story but filled with plot holes and questionable actions, this book had a well thought out plot, well developed conflict, was faster paced, emotionally intense and just a sweet, gushy read. I loved the characters. I loved the story and the romance was powerful. I also enjoyed seeing everyone back as their little family of misfits keeps growing.
Characters... Annie Bell has finally gotten her life on track after a painful and harrowing past. Working with Lee at the now famous Riversong restaurant, her career is right where she wants it. She has friends, her son is happy and thriving and she has a wonderful home, all of which were once non existent. She might be a bit lonely but trusting men has never come easy to her and though she’s enjoying the healing powers of River Valley, she figures it's safer just to enjoy what she has instead of hoping for that which she thinks doesn’t exist. But as pasts usually do, hers has come back to destroy her with one threatening phone call and all that she’s worked so hard for, could be shattered.
Drake Webber has come to River Valley to hide. His main goal is to finish the construction of his house on the mountain, move in and stay, never to come out again. He wants to bury himself inside and become the towns recluse. His past is a haunting tragedy and he’s drowning in so much despair, it literally sends him into panic attacks. He’s completely closed himself off from anything emotional, from anyone’s touch and from any happiness the world might offer, giving away what remains of his life to the nothingness that surrounds him.
But after hiring Annie on as his part time personal chef and discovering she has a painful past as well and its come back to hurt her, he vows to help her in any way he can because he sees something in her situation and in her that resembles his own tortured soul.
What he never counted on was finding the possibility of happiness and love in his desire to help and he’s compelled to not let history repeat itself.
Drake was miserable in his tragedy. His past is filled with one horrific event thats changed him permanently. He was shrouded in sadness and he was hurting so bad, he couldn’t see past that pain.
But you have to love him as he jumps into protective mode and gives Annie and Alder shelter. After a rocky start, he takes Alder under his wing and becomes the man missing from his life. A real and true role model.
I love ten year old Alder and his intelligence, his innocent yet wise way of seeing the world and his smart mouth. He stole the show for me.
I liked Annie’s character and her devotion to Alder made her a lovely mother. She desired more out of life and went for it and succeeded. She was brave and took on Drakes pain, trying to guide him into the light. As much as I admired her, I had a really hard time with her self-esteem issues. She was the quintessential abused woman and she thought so low of herself it was tragic. She was genuinely surprised when someone complimented her or did something nice for her. I never got that “low self-esteem” vibe from her in the first book, so it was a bit off putting to hear all her dissatisfaction with herself.
The gang of misfits are always fun and it was good to see them all again. I also really liked the introduction of the new characters Bella and Ben, which will be the staring couple in book three.
But... My biggest complaint was I hated how quickly Annie let spill her problems to Drake. She’d only met him twice and then she was confiding her entire painful past in one crying moment, but wouldn’t confide in her fiends? I know its sometimes easier to talk with strangers but he’d been so rude to her up to this point and she said many times she didn’t trust him. But she opens up immediately about everything and to me, it didn’t seem realistic. I felt like after everything Drake said to her and Alder, he needed to work a little to get her to open up and to trust him with her problems.
The Wrap Up: I really enjoyed this read and found it to be a terrific second book in this series. I can’t wait to read book three, Riverstar with Bella and Ben. Their small parts in this book made them stand out and I look forward to reading their story.
READ, READ, READ!!! I have the privalege of being part of "Team Tess", and just finished reading the PDF file of her new (this) book! If you've read "Riversong", then this leads off from the end of the that book, but with Annie's (the chef) story and background. Once again, she had written the most fabulous book that had me laughing, gasping, smiling, and crying! As soon as this book is released, head on over to Amazon and buy, buy, buy!!!
As I read Riversong I kept wondering about Annie - what was her life like before she found her self on Lee's door with her son Adler…. After reading Riverbend now I know :) This book was a true page turner. It was very suspenseful with a lot of story lines going on. I felt a wide range of emotions while reading… but I especially loved watching Annie and Drake's relationship develop. Adler kept me in stitches and gave me many laugh out loud moments….
Annie Bell has not had an easy life. From abusive relationships to struggling making it on her own with her young son Alder, she has been through it all. Now she has a new lease on life in a small town in Oregon. Annie is the head chef at the nicest restaurant in town, she has a wonderful eclectic group of friends and finally a happy life, but soon someone from her past is going to threaten her future.
Drake has moved to Riverbend Oregon to get away from everyone and everything! He has sold his successful Tech Company and after surviving a terrible tragedy has decided to become a recluse and live alone with the exception of needing someone to cook for him.
Riverbend is a page turner from beginning to end! The gamut of emotions this story has the reader going through is amazing and absolutely wonderful! Tess Thompson has written a series that will continually leave the reader asking for more.
I highly recommend this book and series. Tess Thompson does a fantastic job developing the characters and leaves you wanting for more!

Review:
Riverbend is the second book in Tess Thompson’s The River Valley Collection. Wow !!!! I really would recommend that you read the first book in this series. River Song.
Annie was introduced in the last book, as a frump, dumpy, woman who gets verbally abused by her boyfriend. We get a brief glimpse of her life 10 years in the past, in the beginning of the book……
Annie loved to cook, and had aspirations of becoming a chef in a restaurant, it was all she wanted to do. She fell in love with food, and used it to hide behind, when her mothers boyfriend began to show an unhealthy interest in her. She found a job in a restaurant, and also a young man, who saw past the padding and the shyness. She joined a college course. And took lessons from the chef in the restaurant that she worked in.
She fell in love and moved in with Marco. It felt like all was finally right in her world ……
As soon as Marco had Annie in his control, that was when she saw the REAL Marco. He would start with the little things, until as with most wife beaters, he graduated to his feet and fists.
The turning point for Annie. Realising she was pregnant. She knew she had to get away. So with the money she had hidden from Marco, Annie formed a plan. I don’t want to spoil the plot, you will have to read that part.
We now skip 10 years into the future. And as we know from the first book, Lee asks Annie to cook for the restaurant, RiverSong. (Annie again is in a bad relationship) But with the love and support of her friends, Annie and Alder (her son) adjust to a life they deserve. Two years after RiverSong, we join Annie, she loves the home she has for herself and her son. She loves her work, and adores her friends. But Annie never told anyone about Marco. She thought he was gone. She was wrong.
Drake is a new character (I had thought Tess was going to get Annie and Billy together, so glad she didn’t), who also has secrets. We meet Drake as a recluse, who hires Annie to cook for him, (but only to cook, he wants her beautiful recipes to be frozen weekly, and then shipped to him). He lives on the hill, gossips are curious about the man, as was I. He came across as a right A***ole!! Rude, arrogant, and not a nice man. He thought he could throw money at people, and it would excuse his behaviour. Wrong !! I for one wanted to hit him several times. He had Annie sign a nondisclosure form. And informed her of a strictly no touching policy!
He liked his privacy and would do all he could to preserve it.
The first day Annie is suppose to cook for Drake, she gets a call from Marco; she is totally freaked, he wants revenge and he knows where she is.
Drake isn’t happy that Alder is with Annie, but tolerates him, barely. Things change between Drake and Annie, when he hears about her violent past, and the abuser who is coming for her. (in fact a little too quick, sorry, but that’s just my opinion). He insists on Alder and Annie moving into the house on the hill, with its electric fence and high gate. And so begins the slow romance of Annie and Drake. She is battling with her weight and trust demons. Drake is dealing with his. They truly are two ships that pass in the night, each growing closer to each other, but neither wanting to get their heart stomped on again.
The ending had all the drama that I was expecting, and a few that I wasn’t.
And the final chapter, get those hankies out, your gonna need it. The emotions were all spot on, and I blubbed like a big girl at all the sad parts, (and there are a few). The additional characters in this book, only added to this story. And it was great to read about the old characters from the previous book.
Life hadn’t stopped for RiverSong, it just added another chapter. And RiverBend is great addition. I see there is another book planned, I am totally ready for another story, and I plan to read both these books again and again. If you like your romance slow, but with plenty of emotions, then please give these one a try. Off to find some chocolate, all that emotion was just too much ;-) lol x
Contemporary romance with some suspense and mystery. This one hit really high on the implausibly scale. The romance was two people with serious issues and trauma deciding they fixed each other. All the intentions and motivations felt off. Setting was good, dialogue was not. Many of the characters from the previous book appeared but the story could stand alone just fine.
Violence. Sex. Swearing. Lots of trauma, abuse, loss, stalking, depression, mental illness, and there’s a scene of a man beating a woman and one of attempted rape, food addiction/eating disorder, etc
Annie started off with a bully, he ended with 10 years in prison, but wanted to seek revenge. She had a son by him, but he never got to see his father because he tried to kill his Mum after beating her up. Drake had had an emotional few years and thought he could never love again, along came chef ,Annie, love took over and they eventually married. Lovely story.
Annie Bell escapes from her abusive boyfriend, Marco by planting drugs in his pockets and calling 911 when he beats her. Ten years later when she thinks she is safe in the Pacific Northwest with her 10 year old son and a new career Marco is released from prison and locates her. He stalks her and threatens her.
The characters and their interaction became quite fascinating as the story progressed. The descriptive text captured my attention from the first sentence. It was such an interesting read.
This is the first book I have read by Tess Thompson but I intend to read others now.
Good writing and a tender story of people with pasts invading their present. The story dragged at a couple of points, but all in all I enjoyed it until the climax. The story lingered on a little more than I would have liked, here as well. I like the fact that she has featured one of her central characters in her next book so that the story will continue for those of us who would like to read more...
I didn't get to read the first book in the series, but this book makes me want to and to read the rest of the series. Finding love again for Drake after he thought he couldn't after his wife and daughter were killed. Annie find a man that didn't scare or abuse her was what she needed and to also protect her son.
I really liked this story. the people, the setting, the food, the town. the swimming hole, the beautiful mansion and the restaurant were my favorite places. but the whole town is written so beautifully that I would want to live there! and the food described is so good that it made me hungry! but the romance, friendships and protection all the people have is what made this book a very good read on a sunny afternoon in the garden.
This is the second book in the River series. We revisit River Valley and see all the characters from the first book. It is two years later and the restaurant is a great success. Riverbend is Annie’s story. She became Lee’s partner in Riversong and is the chef for the restaurant. The restaurant gets rave reviews in Food and Wine Magazine and entices people from all around. Drake is a businessman who has recently sold his company and built a house next to the river in River Valley. He is a broken man and is looking for a place to become a recluse. He decides to hire Annie to cook for him. She comes in on her day off from the restaurant and cooks meals to freeze for the week. He is so rude to her that she wants to turn him down, but the money he is offering is too good to pass up. One night Annie gets a call, her past is catching up with her. The man she ran from and Alder’s father has now found her. Drake offers his house as her safe haven. His security system is one that she and her son can be safe. She and Alder move in and become a daily fixture in Drake’s life of a recluse. He slowly opens up to help her. However, the tragedy that brought him to River Valley stands in the way of any closeness he can feel for Annie. As Annie’s feelings for Drake grow so does her fear and she relies on Drake more and more. She is being threatened and knows it is just a matter of time. Her nightmares are frequent and she wars with herself. She feels she will never be safe or loved by any man but her son. Despair is closing in on her. This was a great continuation of the story from the first book. All the previous characters were there and it was fabulous to see the successes from the other book continue. The reader becomes more invested in the story and characters. This group of misfits seems to burrow their way into the hearts of readers as does the small town life. Annie has been one of my favorite characters and I liked how her story unfolds. It really showed the strength of her character and her integrity. She made it through the trials of her young adult life and came out the other side a strong, single mom. The reader roots for her from the very beginning. This series is full of characters that you fall in love with and hope to see their happy endings. I give this book a 4 out of 5.
From the shocking opening where Annie is savagely beaten to her ingenuity to getting Marco locked up to the mysterious and sad Drake to the little intuitive Alder this was an excellent read...a page turner. The author presented characters that were relatable to the reader...their descriptions so vivid i could imagine them as a friend... I enjoyed this book.
Heartbreaking and heartwarming all at the same time
Riverbend is full of past heartbreaks, soul - seering situations, and chest tightening warm fuzzies. The story is full of amazingly diverse, quirky characters, and fierce emotions. I couldn't get enough of this story, and the tense drama of Annie's past rearing it's head added that extra enticement. Drake and Annie's chemistry contributed to me reading it "cover to cover" as well. Looking forward to reading the rest of the River Valley Series.
I really enjoyed this book from start to finish. I loved the cast of characters and their friendship. Would love to read the next book. This is the story of Annie and how her abusive past led her to a town of second chances and the love of Drake. HEA and a must read.
Enjoyed meeting all the people. Want to move here now!!! Is there such a place where neighbors have your back? Coworkers who care and are kind? Yep, want to live here!
Three dimensional characters stand out on every page
I recommend this book to anyone looking for a reason to hope again. Life is hard, and Tess Thompson does an excellent job of bringing life to her characters, making them stand up on the pages. While the story's premise is not new, Thompson's telling of it rings true. This novel does not disappoint and does not fall into the trap of being contrite. Thompson's unique approach to the story relates to real characters. Well done.
Riverbend was so not what I was expecting. It was okay though. It's about a women who does something drastic to get away from her boyfriend when she finds out she's pregnant. Then ten years later after she's in a new state, a new home, a whole new life, her past comes back to haunt her. Her ex is out of jail and looking for revenge against her. And to the rescue comes the new man in town. He's handsome, rich, and apparently a recluse. He doesn't want anything to do with anyone in town. So he hires Annie to be his chef. To cook once a week for a good chunk of money, so he won't have to leave his home. But when he finds out about Annie's ordeal. He wants to protect her, and he has some very personal reasons for doing it. So they start this romance, even though both of them do not see themselves very clearly. And Annie has a quite little boy, that was adorable. He was probably my favorite character out of the whole book. The only thing that I thought was kind of neat, but yet weird was the stuff with the coyotes. It didn't make a lot of sense to me, but it was still somewhat cool. But overall the book was okay. It had nice characters, and an interesting plot line. Not sure if I will read anymore because there seems to be a second book, but this one was good while I read it.
In this second book in The River Valley series, author Tess Thompson brings back all her familiar characters and introduces us to several more. A couple years have passed since the end of the first book and Riversong is a thriving restaurant. This tale centers around Annie Bell, the talented chef of Riversong, and expands upon the glimpse of Annie’s life we were given in the first novel.
Annie’s road has not been an easy one, but she is striving to make a better future for her and her son Alder. When a wealthy stranger moves into town and offers her a side job with an unbelievable salary attached, she suspects things are too good to be true. When her terrifying past catches up with her, though, Annie finds that this stranger is willing to give her far more than a substantial paycheck.
Riverbend reminds us that life can be incredibly messy. It can also be painful, but if we’re lucky, sometimes we’re offered a second chance—and sometimes that second chance makes all the bad stuff worth it. It illustrates the fact that even the most broken souls can be mended, and that love truly is the strongest medicine.
