Niki Flynn is a young woman on a journey into the dark heart of her own sexual fantasies. She is regularly restrained, spanked, caned, and whipped in the most notorious adult films of modern times—and she doesn't do it for financial gain or because she's a masochist. Niki Flynn makes extreme adult movies because of her curious and profound love of surrender and punishment. Her desires are all about authority and power in situations where she has none, where she is at the mercy of others who lack just that. And for the thrill of dread, anticipation, and the euphoria that follows when she admires the marks from the headmaster's cane or the pirate's whip, Niki Flynn is willing to endure torment. Flown to the secretive underground world of taboo filmmaking, this strange art has led her all over the world. From schoolgirl canings in England to spankings in California, from a Stasi interrogation in Germany to a forced haircut in Prague, Niki Flynn progressed to her darkest role ever—in Bratislava, where she danced with the fiercest werewolves of all.
I hesitated over buying this book, I worried that it might be a bit too much (I could never watch the Lupus Pictures), but I LOVED it! Brilliant book. What a fascinating life Niki Flynn has led. Great sense of humour, lots of empathy and a huge amount of courage to live her life as she wants to and embrace who she is. I also loved Cameron - perfect supportive (and protective) partner. If you are curious about real lives that are lived fully which are a little outside the bounds of what society wants us to believe is "normal", this book is for you.
The most disturbing parts of the book are not the descriptions of what Niki has done (or has had done to her) even though she goes into detail - it's the letters that are sent to her. Interesting and funny and slightly disturbing.
Far better than much erotic fiction, Niki Flynn's unashamed and very straight-forward account of her fetish-driven adventures, replete with trepidations and rewards, is informative, eye-opening and often very arousing - that last perhaps depending on the reader's own proclivities. She writes very capably and expressively. Pace and structure hold interest easily, and she comes over not at all self-obsessed, but rather, self-aware and insightful. She lays out her insecurities and contradictions, yet above all declares her pride for what she achieved in undertaking often extreme roles.
In fact she says she's not an actor, and what she does is role play. One difference, I'd imagine, is that film stars might be personally detached in even the steamiest sex scene, if they don't happen to fancy each other for real. The guy's not hard and the gal's not wet if you like! But Niki Flynn is completely frank about her own turn-on in the scenarios she performs. Indeed we learn that the obligatory white cotton panties that 'schoolgirls' have to wear (temporarily!) when up before authority are the very worst for betraying inappropriate excitement. Just one of many details which stick in one's mind...
Not to ignore that this specialised area of porn depicts for the delectation of those who get off on that sort of thing, the appalling abuse (physical, sexual and psychological) of girls and women, ranging from outrageous 'schoolgirl' canings to chilling totalitarian tortures. I’d expect that fact alone will always be unacceptable to some. It's a relief to be reassured that the 'victims' in often highly professional productions, are completely in control, and can stop what's happening to them in a moment. In particular she emphasises the constant concern for ‘model’ welfare of the notorious Czech ‘Lupus‘ studio. Furthermore she’s clear that no-one working in the business would condone such treatment in real life. But does that extend to the viewers too? Well, there's plenty of quoted messages from punters full of admiration for the performers who dramatise these fantasies so painfully! I've not read '50 Shades', but I believe the ‘mainstream’ popularity of that suggests that the eroticism of submitting to control and punishment resonates with many female readers.
If her kinkiness is her most noteworthy characteristic, she seems to be still a generally balanced person. The essence of her partnership with Cameron, is the caring, supportive compatibility of any well-matched couple, even though their activities together are often not the normal ones. Niki Flynn is a pseudonym, the book is eleven years old, and I couldn't find any recent presence online, so maybe she only pursues her obsessions in private nowadays. As she acknowledges, you can't play a schoolgirl - bratty and rebellious, or even just unfortunate - for ever, at least not to convince to an audience! I found her very likable, and I hope she's well and happy wherever she is!
Given that I read this partly for preperation for a thesis, a little more on the 'why', and the relation between public perception and self-perception in terms of deep analysis would have been useful, but then that's not really the point of this book. This is a memoir, and a stunningly well written one at that. It's brave to write a book on this subject area but then Niki Flynn proves time and time again that she has bravery in abundence. This is a touching account of growth which explores the ups and downs of leading a life in the fetish domain, one which tends not to shy away from the more uncomfortable moments. In this way I would say this is more than just a biography, it is a vital weapon in the arsenal of anyone wishing to prove that one does not have to be a "weirdo" or "freak" to have kinks, and I for one have used it to this end before. It explains with loving detail the thought processes behind it and I think will provide a lot of support to novice kinksters in the future. Wonderful book.
A fantastic story. Flynn writes as well as any non-writer, and tells a story with a good amount of detail. However, I felt that she jumped around a lot, and some elements I had trouble reconciling with her timeline. There are a lot of characters in her life (as there are in any life) and I found this to be slightly confusing, not remembering who the different people were when they re-entered the story several chapters after leaving it.
The story itself, however, is gripping. Flynn has had some fascinating experiences, and describes them in excruciating - literally - detail. The scenes are easy to read and very titillating. I actually got a few ideas from this book! That said it's not wall-to-wall play scenes, so it's easy to read on the bus or at lunchtime.
I found this to be an immensely enjoyable read, and recommend it for those who love a filthy biography of an intelligent person with an interesting life.
If you want to know what the world of sexual fetishism and BDSM is really like behind the scenes, look no further than this book. It's literally a no holds barred look into the world of soft[ish] fetish porn. NOT for the faint of heart!
