I'm teaching myself Greek, mostly for the fun of it, although one day my wife and I would love to visit Greece for an extended visit (a month or more). I download lots of books on languages and enjoy thumbing through them a few pages at a time when I can. Some of the books are quite dry and feel like slogging through cement. Others seem to give me very little to work with. This book, although simple, I find to be a delight. There's a picture, say of a bird, followed by a number of sentences or sentence fragments. First these are written in the Greek alphabet. Below each sentence, the letters are transposed into their English sounding equivalents. (What a great way for me to practice recognizing the letters and sounding them out correctly!) Underneath that is the English translation of the sentence or fragment.
This gives me the opportunity to pick out words that were in one sentence and try to recognize and remember their meaning when I see them again in some future sentence. I start noting things like how the endings of adjectives change to match the gender of the nouns they describe, etc.
I realize lessons like this are simple, but they also seem the perfect way to begin a foundation in a language. I'm not given a bunch of dry rules to memorize up front, rather I discover them as I go!
Anyway, it's a very simple book, but I'm loving it! :)
