This small volume was designed to be easily carried in your pocket when you went to the video store looking for something to rent, an experience that young people will never know (and even for those antiquarians that do so, the book would probably be replaced by a smart phone and the imdb). Its value as an on-the-shelf reference is undermined by its small size, quirky organizational style, lack of indexing, and pithy-but-not-insightful reviews.
Rather than offering an A-Z listing of horror films, the book is broken down by categories, with the idea that, “if you enjoyed a film like this, you might try some of these.” Again, this is good to facilitate browsing what might be a limited collection on shelves, but not very helpful for reference purposes. Some categories include “A Night with Bela Lugosi,” “Poe Adaptations,” “Killer Simians,” “The Movie that Wouldn’t Die” (for sequels), and “Unnerving Scenes Involving Eyeballs.” This approach does have its merits – I never would have seen as many of Tod Browning’s silent films as I have but for the handy list on page 4, for example.
As I’ve commented about most of my film guides, this book is probably made pretty superfluous today by the imdb and the internet in general, but it is an interesting relic of the past.
