Book two of The Triton Experiment

Intergalactic mercenary Kat Darah has been ordered to keep her shape-shifting ability a secret from everyone but those closest to her, for her own safety. She's learned how to control the feral rage…for the most part. But when Lieutenant Rygard's military unit goes missing, she'll use every skill she has to find her man.

Lt. Christopher Rygard has witnessed his girl shift, and he still wants her. After Kat rescues him from alien clutches, he'd like nothing more than to wrap her in his arms again, but his first duty is to his men. And half of them have been shipped off-planet to be sold as slaves.

Kat and Rygard will need to form a new team to go deep undercover, posing as gladiators and learning to fight together in order to survive. In the arena, it's all about who is the strongest predator…

See how it all began in Hunting Kat.

A space sci-fi adventure for a heroine who is a panther shifter and a military man as her hero together on a dangerous mission grabbed my attention. This is the second adventure for these two, but it functions fine as a standalone though I really encourage folks to try out their first encounter too just to see how far they have come.

Kat Darah became a panther shifter when a hostile takeover of the military academy base she was on as a teenager brought a sadistic group of captors who shot her and her fellow cadets full of a virus that altered their DNA. She was the only one who survived the process and escaped her attackers. Now she is second in command on a mercenary vessel and years later still trying to come to terms with what happened to her as her body nears the end of its mutation. Her friends and especially her captain, Dev, keep her sane and human, but most importantly, they help keep her off the Teran military's radar. All those altered humans like herself are usually kept contained in a lab for experimentation and never allowed freedom. She has to be extra careful now because their latest mercenary contract is to the military where they will shuttle a special team of soldiers with particular skill sets to join Kat's lover, Lt. Christopher Rygard on the second phase of his latest mission. His mission is to follow the trail of slave traffickers to their source and bust up the operation.

Things get interesting aboard the mercenary vessel when the mission team joins them. Kat encounters a pompous Captain who gives her the impression that he hasn't commanded a team before and doesn't have the respect of his men, then there is the tough marine sergeant, the KX-9 team of man and dog, the terrifying prisoner that is more than he seems and several other tough capable men. Kat and her friend Skuld are the only two females aboard. Sunny and gentle-souled Skuld and her curious ferret companion make friends with Tracer and his German Shepherd, but everyone else is a bit leery. Soon they have bigger problems to worry about when Rygard gets off an emergency call for help.

Rygard is still wrapping his head around the things he knows about Kat's second nature and his feelings for her. He misses her greatly and that is a revelation in its own right. The rare communications between them and quick times they catch up here and there are all treasured. He is enchanted by the shy female who blushes when they are close, but is also the same female who is lethal in a battle. It's hard for him to keep his mind on his recon mission just knowing that she'll be joining him soon as part of his mission team. But then he and his men encounter the unexpected and their camp is overrun. He gets off the signal to the ship and hopes that they get it so Kat and the others won't come innocently into an ambush.

And from there, Kat, Rygard and the team's adventures really get under way. Danger awaits them as they pursue the mission. The mission takes its toll on them emotionally and physically. Kat must use everything she has including embracing her other nature completely if they are to survive. Rygard has to stand firm and be the grounding she needs to keep remembering her human traits. In the end, its fiercesome and calls on everything they've got.

This is not really one of those deep character or romantic development stories. It has those components, but its really an action-studded adventure. Punches are not pulled and it gets rough. The heroine is one of the monsters though she is not a bad guy. The hero is less developed, but he's still a worthy person who does everything with honor and courage including his best at accepting Kat just the way she is. They're still working on their relationship and they didn't actually put much into words, but it is there and growing.

See that's the thing...this book's worldbuilding takes the approach that those who are infected with the virus that turns them into animals and uninfected humans treat them like vicious animals. Unfortunately, this is true of some. Most people die from the virus, but many become stuck in animal or partial animal form and lose their humanity. There are a few like Kat that for whatever reason survive and thrive. There are also other aliens that are captured and infected too it seemed or maybe they just went crazy from the deprivations and torture during their time of slavery at the Coliseum.

The universe in this series has its advances and good things in it, but the focus of this story was on the depraved side of nature whether it be human or alien so the tone can get dark at moments and brutal. Kat herself endured rape, torture and slavery until she escaped her captures which is why she fights so fiercely in this one (this was not shown in present scene just in her flashbacks, but be warned if its a sensitivity issue for you).

While on the subject of worldbuilding, I really enjoyed the variations of alien races, the futuristic technology and just futuristic difference which is one of my favorite things about Sci-Fi genres.

There were some humorous and warmer moments to offset the sad or dark stuff too. I cracked up when Sculd's ferret stole her vibrator and she was afraid one of the military guys would find it so she had Kat help her find Chester's stash. Chester was a cutie. He stole tons of stuff including Kat's colorful silk panties. The family-like relations Kat had with the merc crew were great too. Kat and Rygard knew how to heat things up nicely too even long distance with the help of hologram viewers.

All in all, it was a good read. I shed some tears once, I laughed several times and I was totally engaged with the story from cover to cover. Those who enjoy spicy adventuresome space sci-fi romance should give this a try.

My thanks to Netgalley for the opportunity to read this book in exchange for my honest review thoughts.

Panther shifter Kat Darah is sill getting used to the idea of having a man in her life. It’s been years since she was forcibly infected with lycanthropy, then tortured and raped by her captives. Yet Rygard is the first man she has been able to open herself up to since it happened. And now they are trying to maintain a relationship long-distance. With her job as part of a mercenary space crew and his in the military, they don’t have many other options. But as the book begins, it appears their missions are finally converging to put them at the same place at the same time.

Unfortunately, their reunion is put on hold when Rygard and his men are taken captive. Kat must work first to rescue him –and later– to help him find the rest of his men. The soldiers were changed into shifters and forced to compete in gladiator-style death matches. Kat and Rygard go undercover as competitors to help get them out.

The games have a familiar feel. They’re reminiscent of those Kate Daniels and her crew took part in during Magic Bleeds. They’re violent and they trigger Kat’s base instincts to kill. And they are the perfect backdrop for her to truly face her struggle to come to terms with what she is. Can she ever really be human again? Is she doomed to devolve into an animal? The fight to stay alive forces her to put those kinds of aside and simply survive.

Kat is an interesting contradiction. She is brilliant and fierce, but she is also damaged and vulnerable. It’s hard not to root for her, and like Rygard, it’s hard to see all of her self-doubt. As for our hero, he is sexy and strong, without being an alpha-hole. And while he tries to help Kat as much as he can, he never seems threatened by her strength or put off by her nature.

The book got off to a slow start for me. I had a hard time waiting for the reunion for Kat and Rygard. I also found myself frustrated by the action-to-romance ratio. I understand the way the plot dictated survival as a priority, but I guess I walked into it expecting more of a romance. Instead, it felt like a paranormal science fiction story with a romantic element. The first story in this series was significantly shorter, and during the transition from novella to novel, the focus shifted. Or maybe just my perception did.

I liked the alternating POVs between Kat and Rygard. And the love scenes were sexy and satisfying. I just didn’t invest deeply and there weren’t really any surprises. I think I would have liked this better as a second novella.

Although Kat Darah and Lt Chris Rygard’s relationship has been short, it has been intense. So when him and his men are discovered missing Kat knows she will tear through anyone who stops her finding him. But, when she locates Rygard, together they then must find the rest of his men. But the only way they will survive is if Kat embraces her shapeshifting abilities and risk losing Rygard as he witnesses first hand the dangerous predator she is.

I couldn’t put this book down! I really liked the first book in this series, Hunting Kat, but Fighting Kat I loved, it built upon the first book and showed us more of Kat and Rygard and the supporting characters as well as the hard and sometimes brutal universe they live in.

The more we learn about Kat the more I like her, in this book we see a darker more violent side as they all have to fight to survive and as Kat comes to term with her inner cat. But, although she can be wicked vicious she has a tender spot for those she views as hers and you see her unleash her violent side to protect them. Her romance with Rygard is also to two extremes, at times it is sweet and other times they are steaming up the pages of my kindle. I also like that time is spent getting to know the secondary characters and I find I care about them almost as much as the main couple and helps drag me into the story more, I am even emotionally invested in their pets!

The setting in this book was also interesting as they spend a lot of time fighting in a gladiator type environment to try and get to Rygard’s men. This meant the book was full of action as they literally had to fight to survive and try to escape. What made it more intriguing and tense was the presence of a character who was completely untrustworthy yet who they had to rely on and I hope he makes a reappearance in the future, he was completely amoral but made a great frenemy.

This was a fantastic read, and this series keeps getting better, Fighting Kat amped up the action and romance and kept me riveted to the page. If you want to start a series that gets your blood pumping and your heart racing then I recommend you give this one a try.

Brought to you by OBS reviewer Sammy

I finished this book and purchased the first book in the series, that’s how good this story is!

It is a perfectly balanced military sci-fi: aliens, shifters, action-adventure, romance.

Kat is an incredibly strong women, not just because of her shifter abilities but as a person as well.

How she looked at herself and tried to work with both sides of her nature was an interesting look into her thought process. She is great for Rygard, awesome team, both as a couple and when fighting and working. I also wonder where Max and Kat wind up, what kind of relationship they form.

The Captain Dev was an interesting character and I hope he gets his own story. I would love to know more about him. The way he handled Kat, his ship and those that came on it were perfect.

Rygard, what can I say, what a nice, strong guy, how he is with Kat and the way he talks to her worked so well, they fit together in a real way. Some hot stuff going on between them, but not so much that it takes over the story. Again, so well balanced, what an amazing author.

Bharguest, I want more backstory about his character. Is he really as bad as he seems? What is his agenda? Where is he going?

I loved all the different aliens in the Colosseum. This story has a different and fresh take on shifters, with a focus on many other areas. The ending had things tied up nicely, but with lots of room for more. MORE Please!

What a wonderful story, characters, action and writing. I highly recommend this book for anyone who enjoys this genre and it fits in so many that it should appeal to anyone who enjoys one or more of them. This series by this author will be an auto buy for me and I will definitely be checking out her other books.

This is the second book in the Triton Experiment, and Kat is back on her feet running through the galaxy and into adventure. Kat Darah can shapeshift and is controlling her unique abilities and feral rages well ... until her man's unit is missing. Rescuing him is just the first step. They will have to go deep undercover to find and fight for their missing unit and pose as gladiators. PJ is an excellent author, and I've enjoyed every book I've read by her. She's steamy, she's violent and the plot is always thick and full of life and action. Kat is also a really strong and fiery heroine, which, of course, is my favorite type. I also just discovered she's on Audible, which means that Hunting Kat will be my next buy (it's a steal for under $5).

Fighting Kat is the second book in author P.J. Schnyder’s The Triton Experiment Series and follows Hunting Kat, a novella I loved. I was anxiously awaiting this next story and wow, what a fantastic follow up!

Mercenary Kat Darah is back on her ship and kind of keeping things status quo. Daily life, ship duties and all that….and missing Rygard. They hadn’t had nearly enough time together and now he was on a mission with his unit and she was here, trying to keep herself busy and ignore the itch she feels for him. Adding to that itch is not being able to shift into her panther form and go for a nice long run. But she’s had years to try to get used to that and control her shape shifter urges. This whole guy itch is new though and adding those urges together is a tricky combo. Luckily, Rygard calls in with a holographic call so she could see him and for a small moment in time she has peace. That tiny sense of peace is shattered when she finds out that after his call, he and his team had gone missing. Now, she is on a mission to save him and his men. Kat has no idea that the mission will end up taking her right back into the world she’s tried for years to forget. A world of violence and shape shifting viruses…the world that has haunted her memories and the world from her nightmares.

Wow. Talk about a pulse pounding, white knuckled read! I’m going to tread carefully here and not give any spoilers away because this is a story you really need to experience first hand.

To save Rygard and his unit, Kat must join up with friends new and old to get to the bottom of where he has been taken and what the enemy plan is. Of course, it can’t be easy and poor Kat is thrust into the middle of the world that created her and the world she is trying to forget. After she finds Rygard, they realize that in order to save his men, they’ve got to go deep undercover in an underground world filled with cage matches and infected shifters. People and species held prisoner for the entertainment of others. Slaves fighting, literally, for their lives. The amount of action in this book is nothing short of spectacular and I held my breath during some of the fight scenes, fearing for Kat, Rygard and their team. There were tense moments but there were also tender and emotional moments. Kat and Rygard’s connection and attraction is strong an unyielding and I loved seeing their relationship grow after being put to the test.

In the addition of many characters in this story, one really stood out to me and he was a mystery for almost the whole book….Bharguest. A dark and deadly prisoner being held on Kat’s ship, I was always excited to get to a scene with him in it. He held many secrets and I do hope we get to see more of him in the series. I also have to mention that P.J. did an amazing job making me as a reader connect with the new characters and strengthen my love for Kat, Rygard, Dev and crew.

Overall, this was an enjoyable and action packed tale from start to finish and I cannot wait to see what P.J. has in store for us next!

I adore Kat and not only because we share our name. ;) She is a survivor. She was captured, abused and given a virus that mutated her into a panther shifter. She has a lot of baggage to say the least! She’s fierce, smart, loyal and learning how to combine the two sides of her nature. Fighting Kat has it all, action, edge of your seat danger, snark, sass and passion and caring… I loved seeing how Kat protects those she’s let into her heart.

Fighting Kat stirred up a lot of emotions in me., up, down, all around. Kat is a merc and travels with her captain Dev and his crew. She is in a long distance relationship with a soldier named Rygard. I’m in a long distance relationship too and their longing connected with me and nearly made me cry. I ached for them both. I was looking forward to their mini reunion when her ship is commissioned to bring more soldiers to join his team. Then PJ Schnyder threw me for a loop when Rygard’s group was attacked and taken hostage. I was going “No, no no!” Kat has to put a lid on her panic too and rescue her guy. Then my emotion was relief. :)

But that’s not the end. There’s intrigue and more danger as Kat and Rygard, along with a select team, infiltrate the fighting arena where some of Rygard’s fellow soldiers have been sent. I couldn’t put this book down! Kat has to figure out if she wants to balance her panther side with her human side and if Rygard can still care seeing all she has to become for them to survive.

The romance in this book is hot! But more than that it felt real. Two very strong people trying to be honest and present for each other despite their differences and the challenges of their jobs. They respect each others strengths and have each others backs… and fronts. ;) yum!

♥ “Fine.” She crossed her arms over her chest. “No bloodshed until we hit planet side unless one of them draws blood on me first. Happy?”

♥ His chest tightened. “Believe me, sweetness, I wish I were with you too. Especially right now.”

♥ She stilled in his arms. The only reason he didn’t worry was because she pressed herself to him, holding him close in her embrace. After a long time, she whispered against his shirt, “I missed your heartbeat.”

♥ “Looking to see something amusing become a thing of violent beauty.”

I love science fiction and Fighting Kat has that combined with a romance that makes my geek loving heart rejoice. The world building, aliens and technology in this story were great but what really grounded it for me were the relationships. Kat’s bond with her captain Dev, her girl friend Skuld, her tech buddy Boggle and most of all with her guy Rygard, felt real and relatable. I loved seeing Kat grow and let down some of the walls she had developed to protect herself. I am eager to see more of Kat’s journey. I need more! I recommend you give Kat a fighting chance and join her journey too.

(((hugs)))

Fighting Kat is the second book in this sci fi series by new to me author Pj Schneider . Part of the Triton Experiment series this book manages to combine action with sci fi romance but the emphasis here is definitely action! If you are looking to read something that features original story lines told in a way that delights then you have certainly found it here. A feisty heroine who truly can kick butt and doesn't pretend otherwise!
Kaitlyn is a mercenary just working her way through life and the galaxy. She's the victim of an experiment that has forever changed her and now she possesses the ability to shape shift into a panther. She's careful to keep her abilities under wraps and only the trusted few on board ship with her share her secret. She's an odd mix of sass and innocence and has recently met Rygard a man who fights like a warrior and loves her like no other. Kats determined to remain hidden as if discovered she would either be killed or used for further experimentation.
What starts out as a routine mission taking a military group to a distant planet very soon starts to get complicated. Rygard and his men have been taken prisoner whilst waiting for Kats reinforcements and she's not too sure the military crew on board with her have told them all there is to know. Something strange is going on and the mysterious prisoner on board seems to know more than he's letting on. He's an ex gladiator but just like Kat he's also quite different to other humans. Worse he seems to sense that Kat also is carrying a secret. When Kat learns of Rygards fate her newly awakened emotions start to take over and all she can think about is saving him but can the woman control her inner cat?
This is an engaging story which manages to straddle several different genres. It's a sc fi romance but it's mixed with paranormal and hot sex. Strong supporting characters that are surprisingly well developed and excellent world building . Kat is a really interesting character and I can't wait to read more about her and her crews adventures.

Fighting Kat is book 2 in the series but it does a great job as a stand-alone. I have not read book one but had no trouble getting into the story in Fighting Kat.

As a cat lovers if I could shift it would be as a cat. That is probably the reason I love stories that feature people who are cat shifters.

For Kat Darah shifting to a cat was not a choice she would have made. She was injected with a drug that changed her DNA and left her with the ability to shift to a panther. She is a really strong person but has some deep insecurities. She has to over come those in the story.

She has two important men in the story. Dev is the captain of the space ship she lives on and is also the leader of the mercenary group that lives on the ship. He is one of Kat’s anchors. He is important as a friend and mentor. Christopher Rygard is the other important man in Kat’s life and he is a love interest.

I like the way both were important and both cared about Kat. The story line was filled with danger. There were important side characters that added to the tension in the story. The interactions and their results were very well written. While the action in the book was important it was Kat’s reactions to how she had to act that was at the heart of the story. I loved how Kat was both a typical girl and a very strong woman. All in all this is an exciting story that set up the next book in the series. It will be fun to see how Kat does in a new role.

I was really surprised, I liked this book. It was very different from what I usually read. I usually read paranormal romance, this book is more of a Science Fiction / Action with a underling romance to keep things interesting. I loved the main character Kat and how kick ass she was. She was the one doing the rescuing of the guys, a complete gender role reversal. Loved the crew members on board the ship with Kat and I look forward to seeing them in future books, perhaps they will get their own stories. Hope to see more of Kat and her solder guy Rygard in the future.
