They say anyone can write a book, and here is proof. A plausible plot, believable characters, mastery of spelling and grammar are not said to be necessary, and here is proof.

Stephen Penner’s A Prosecutor for the Defenense is offered as a “legal thriller.” Kat Anderson is a very beautiful Medical Examiner (or possibly Assistant Medical Examiner - her description is one of many inconsistencies) in Seattle. Her ex-husband has moved to California and remarried. But now he is charged with murdering this second wife. Kat persuades her “boy friend,” David Brunelle, to take leave, travel 1000 miles south and change from being a prosecutor to act as Defense (US spelling) attorney, a role of which he has no experience.

In San Francisco, this 40-something lawyer enters two offices where very beautiful receptionists make it impossible for him to concentrate. He hires a private investigator whose beauty is such that she is described as “perfect.” She changes her hair colour daily. She does no investigating but at one stage of their research she asks the pointed questions while the lawyer sits back and makes notes.

There is more of his, but you get the idea.

As for the writing, it is hard to know where to start. For example, “… … while Tuttle was kind of a cold bitch Ayala seem like a pretty likeable guy. Brunelle kind of wished …” In conversation, he “cocks a head” at her, and she “cocks a head back.” Brunelle “rolls his eyes mentally.” A woman shakes hr head “fondly.” Every affirmative is underlined with a nod. Resistance is indicated by folded arms.

There is much more of his, but you get the idea.

At times the reader may be reminded of the 9-year-old Daisy Ashford’s unwitting classic, “The Young Visiters.” “Laura handed out tea to her guests. She has very nice china.” This is Penner not Ashford.

This may seem an unnecessarily long review for a very bad book, but there is a wider point to be made. Just as anyone can write book, anyone can write a review. Th reviewer’s standards can only be guessed.

On Amazon, a number of reviewers have given Stephen Penner’s A Prosecutor for the Defenense the maximum five stars. This puts the author on a par with such as John Grisham or Scott Turow or - heaven help is - the Puliyzer prize-winner, Harper Lee.

This can only happen on an era when computers and the internet enable self-publishing. A Prosecutor for the Defenense would not have survived ten minutes of the attention of a professional publisher.

Not all self-published books are bad but there is usually a reason why they have not gone through the traditional processes. It would be helpful if Amazon distinguished between the two

I’m not vibing with this book, too much romance

The storyline was good as usual but I hated how the author changed David character. David character is belittle to me, he is reduced to weak, as a man. After reading book 1-3, David character went from a strong confidence man to a wuss in order to develop a relationship. Then I can’t believe Kat had the audacity to ask David to defend her ex-husband and David dropped everything to abide by her request, like he whipped, which I’m assuming he is. So, I’m assuming David in love and we should expect a wedding and baby soon. This book was too much Kat. Author trying too hard to ignite a romance relationship between David and Kat. I only completed it because I really wanted to know how David would do as a defense attorney and I wanted to know what really happened to Vanessa. Again, court was good and both lawyers did a great job and I liked the judge too, she was fair. I will test book 5 but if it’s more romance than drama, then I will bail out on David series. I don’t like romance novels, too predictable and boring.

Interesting story.

Just like the title says, David became defense lawyer in San Francisco. With the help of beautiful investigator Sophia, and his girlfriend Kat. Murder trial of Kat's ex-husband. Quick courtroom arguments and unbelievable ending. You'll love this book and all the other books in this series. Also Kindle was mentioned, but problems with the text to speech.

Disappointing

A generally enjoyable series, however, how on earth the MC reached that final admission of guilt is so unbelievably far fetched, hence the 2 stars. A bit disappointing.

I love legal thrillers. This was my first book by this author. Characters were OK...... otherwise I'd have given it 5 stars. Action moved along and it kept me guessing right up to the end. Not bad.

Yet another formulaic ending: abrupt and unfulfilling

Click here for my commentary as I read and grumbled.

I love these dang books. They're interesting and so easy to read with a highly addictive pace, character interactions, and dialogue. This one in particularly was super fun because it put Brunelle into defense rather than offense, called upon by Kat to defend her ex-husband from murdering his current wife. Reading Brunelle take on the role of defense attorney led to some rather insightful peeks into the inner workings of his mind as he contemplates how both a prosecutor AND a defense attorney would handle matters. I liked witnessing his smarts and knowledge. Can't say I'm a fan of how he keeps letting Kat dictate his every move, though, but dude's still smitten with the woman, so what else can I do but tolerate it?

But as much I love so many factors of these books, I absolutely REFUSE to give a 5th star until Penner can give me a damn ending that involves an actual jury's verdict. I was hoping it wouldn't happen (again), but here we are: Fourth book in and I'm still deprived of the rush of wondering about what the jury's decision will be. Because yet AGAIN, something fantastical--or in this case, unbelievable-- happens that taints the case in some type of way and all the buildup to jury deliberations crumbles before my eyes. And once that happens, the book just fizzles out into its typical uneventful epilogue (that usually doesn't offer much more than micro mentions of the case itself), and then just ENDS. *groan*

Four books. Ten more to go. While I still look forward to new courtroom dramas, I'm now of a mindset to expect it all to be derailed in one way or another. It's a waste of my time, but it so sucks that I'm not annoyed enough to rate the books too lowly or give up. I'm still so entranced by the cases that I wanna know what happens. Still, I'm now making it my mission to continually point out the painful formula to these books' endings in these reviews:

SPOILERS TO FOLLOW

Book 1? Defendant miraculously bailed out by an unnamed person at the last minute, then is subsequently killed by the ME when he went after her daughter. No more case. No more jury.

Book 2? Defendant on house arrest is permitted to visit his dying friend in the hospital, goes after Brunelle with intent to kill, but gets killed instead. No more case. No more jury.

Book 3? Court witness incapacitates Brunelle when the latter goes to acquire a report from him. Witness holds lawyer hostage at gunpoint at the courthouse and is killed. No motive. Mistrial declared. No more jury.

Book 4? A witness confesses to setting the fire that accidentally killed her friend. The confession is profound, but it does NOTHING to suggest WHY the victim was on the floor when she died, with or without a bruised neck. Inexplicably, the State simply no longer cared anymore why she was in such a state to have died from oxygen deprivation, ESPECIALLY since the fire isn't what killed her. But no matter, let's just dismiss the charges. No more case. No more jury.

Can't wait to see how book 5's case will be botched. Holding on to the hope that I can one day read an actual jury verdict. For once.

A Prosecutor for the Defense is the fourth instalment in the David Brunelle Legal Thriller Series. And so the book binge began ... this series turned out to be a gripping and masterfully crafted collection of legal dramas set against the backdrop of Seattle’s criminal justice system. The series follows David Brunelle, a dedicated and sharp prosecutor, as he navigates the complexities of law, morality, and justice.
What makes this series stand out is the balance between intense courtroom drama with deeply human stories. David Brunelle is an intriguing character - intelligent, principled, and yet flawed in ways that make him even more relatable. Mr. Penner’s writing easily brings the legal world to life with authenticity, offering a fascinating glimpse into the challenges prosecutors face, from gathering evidence to battling wily defense attorneys.
Each book in the series presents a unique and thought-provoking case, often delving into some morally ambiguous territory. The plots are tightly woven, with twists that are both surprising and satisfying. Mr. Penner’s ability to build the tension and suspense is noteworthy, as is his knack for creating vivid, multidimensional characters – both the heroes and villains.
So, whether you’re a fan of legal thrillers, crime fiction, or simply enjoy a well-told story, then the David Brunelle series delivers on all fronts.
Happy Reading…

This was an excellent well written legal thriller. Dave Brunelle was a prosecutor. He's dating Kat, the medical examiner. One day she calls Dave, frantic because her ex-husband, Jeremy, has been arrested for murder. Kat wants Dave to defend the man and although he explains to her that he has no experience as a defense attorney, she insists he be the one to do it. He reluctantly agrees and heads for San Francisco.

What follows is a very interesting story. Dave and Kat are just beginning to get more serious and now he's finding himself jealous of a man Kat used to love and had a child with. And he's supposed to help the guy. It's not like he can say no. The case is arson and when they find a body in the fire, Jeremy's current wife, it doesn't look good. Really enjoyed this one. Definitely recommend.

Outstanding legal thriller!!

One needs to read this book to find out what travails Dave Brunelle went through to change all his perceptions , thoughts, outlook and attitude to be able to function as a defense attorney!

His journey through this process cost him a lot in terms of adjusting to the circumstances that exposed him to the behavior of the prosecutor
(normally his role), the cops, the M.E who worked on the case and everyone else.

How he works through all of this forms the content of this book, which is formidable, engrossing and keeps the readers totally immerse themselves in the narrative!

Another winner from Stephen Penner!!!

The word for word courtroom proceedings make these books compelling and worth the read. This plot resolves in a realistic way, whereas earlier books relied on gimmicks from left field.
Stand aside Mickey Haller, Rusty Sabich, and all other thriller attorneys, Dave Brunelle is the horniest lawyer to hit the pages. Countless stunning babes surround him throughout these books, and occupy a good deal of his waking thoughts, sometimes jeopardizing his courtroom attention span. The legal side of this character is strong, his social/ sexual dimension is shallow and adolescent.

Soap Opera-ish Legal "Thriller" Relies on F bombs for Thrills

I would give this book two and a half stars if I could.

The main problem it's that the protagonist is not very likeable. The crux of the story is that he is a prosecutor called upon to be a defense attorney. Half of the book is spent with him moaning to himself about how much he hates doing that. Add to that his foul language, teaching his client's young daughter to swear, and his constant lusting after his girlfriend. The result is that this guy is not the kind of man that I want to read about.

Fantastic!! Page Turner!

I've read all 4 David Brunelle Legal series books and they've all been great! I think this one was my favorite. To read about David taking on a Defense attorneys job was interesting.
I usually figure out what happened ( whodunit ) before the book does but not this time! I have been a trial junkie for the last 10 years ( watching on Facebook with a group of friends ) Now I'd rather read novels/Thrillers about trials. I have fewer nightmares this way.
Thank you, Stephen Penner for the Thrillers that have kept me interested and entertained.

A Legal View from both sides of the court system

Lawyer David Brunelle switches teams as he moves from prosecutor to defense lawyer. It’s an interesting transition in the adversarial setting as he adjusts to an adhoc team and plans a strategic defense relating to a murder charge.
This is an excellent read to understand what goes on behind the scenes as the characters rise up to meet their individual challenges. Its totally enjoyable right to the end with some novel elements/ insights.
Well done!

A well written book which is number 4 in a series. The story will grab your attention and hold it until the epilogue. The court room antics, by both lawyers, are brilliant. My only regret with this book is that I have not read the others in the series. You will not be disappointed if you are a fan of legal thrillers.

I have rated this book 4.5 stars.

I obtained this book from Amazon in Kindle format.

The protagonist sure had a dirty mind. I don't get what's wrong with a six syllable name, but maybe my mind wasn't dirty enough to get the joke that goes unexplained? On the flip side, a lot of the action gets over explained, which I suppose is justified by the fact that it's a prosecutor rethinking his approach. I don't know if a book with this pace can accurately be called a legal thriller, but if you enjoy procedural drama, this is pretty good.

Thrilling, Tickling & Enaging

I really enjoyed this one. Granted, the story isn’t highly complex like w/ John Grisham. But, it’s the lead up to the trial science keeps you wondering.

It’s the court scene that will grab you. Oh, that was a fun read where most end up being either too legally oriented or too flat & predictable.

If you love legal thrillers & want to chill while reading an engaging book, this is definitely that.

Double indemnity

If any reader has struggled through an uninteresting book with many problems for the content to errors this is a book to wake them back into the reading habit .
The movement within the western America from Seattle to San Francisco and their courts of law with a case more a conundrum with many actual additional problems for the normal citizen will provide an. Escape with easy reading finishing abruptly but still a complete novel

I didn't think that this would be a masterpiece but I certainly didn't think that words without meaning, emotion, or logic could be made into what we call a 'book'.
It would be especially nice if the main character could be introduced to even one female character without a detailed description of her hair and her eyes and her mouth and her breasts and how much the lawyer would love to be with her in one way or another.
Pretty stupid!!!!!

Riveting mystery novel

How does a prosecutor go to becoming a defense attorney? The reader finds out the differences in this mystery murder novel. Although the story ends quite quickly it is a satisfying legal novel showing the different roles a prosecutor and defense attorneys. Recommend

Surprising !

Firstly, it reads as a light-hearted comedy with members of the legal profession. Then the differences with prosecuting and defending clients. Kat, who is neither is certainly in charge ! Brunelle a prosecutor is to be the defence attorney and an induction into how to follow court procedure !! Kat again and the conclusion. Hmph !!

David Brunelle always plays a good game

I love them s series of books; the main character David Brunelle comes across as a completely charming, human guy who makes mistakes and gives his all to try and get to the truth of his cases. Law, humour and a little bit of romance, what's not to like !

Not your average court case

I love reading a good legal thriller and this was one! It had all the required twists and turns and kept me glued to the pages until the end. Dave Brunelle is a prosecutor who out of love becomes a defense attorney, so the first plot twist is there from the get go. From there, it all spins. Recommended.

The story could’ve been really good, but… Kat is once again an immature 13 year old instead of a grown woman and doctor. Brunelle takes a couple months off of work, unpaid; goes to a different state and stays there, unpaid and footing all expenses; is doing the job pro-bono. Yeah, I don’t think so.

not finished

A good story but it wasn’t finished. Why did Jeremy just walk away from her. She had fallen but he didn’t see how she was. No, the autopsy did not show any head injury but she still had not seemed awake when he left. Also the prosecutor asked for the case to be dismissed but he should have added for Laura to be taken into police custody for arson.

5 stars for a fairly accurate portrayal of a criminal trial and dealing with witnesses and clients. 1 star for the casual misogyny wherein even competent professional women are judged based on their sex appeal. It’s weird to be publishing books in the 2010s and using gender stereotypes from the 80s/90s.

Good read...but same old, same old grammar and spelling

Should be proofed by a reader with English writing of novels.
It was quite interesting, when the primary protagonist, converted into a plaintiff ‘s Attorney; seriously, it’s as if he experienced a conversion. Clever!

A prosecutor is asked by his girlfriend to defend her ex-husband in a murder charge. If that's not enough, it is in another state where he has no contacts. This was a fast reading book with good characters. I rate this a 4.7.
