Compelling Consequences: A Tale Fashioned from Pride and Prejudice

Rate this book
Elizabeth Bennet, Pride and Prejudice's irrepressible heroine, is long celebrated for her prowess in a battle of wits, in particular with the dashing Fitzwilliam Darcy. Compelling Consequences: A Tale Fashioned from Pride and Prejudice takes readers through the heartbreak, adventure, loss, and recovery that are companion to these famed lovers, while adding an extra dash of spice and adventure. The wealthy, convivial bachelor Charles Bingley enjoys the company of his pedigreed single friend Fitzwilliam Darcy as he considers the purchase of an estate in Hertfordshire. He also gives shelter to the lovely Bennet sisters, Elizabeth and Jane. Included in the mix is Caroline, Charles's meddling sister who will stop at nothing to hijack Darcy's attentions. While Elizabeth and Darcy experience an immediate attraction, tension soon mounts over his haughty, high-minded attitudes. Even amid the conflict, Elizabeth and Darcy put their differences aside, and enter into a courtship. Fate soon separates them due to two serious events; yet Darcy will allow no peril to keep him from his heroic rescue of Elizabeth. An enthralling story with suprising twists, and a few choice snags, unfolds as Darcy and Elizabeth once again are brought together passionately by fate. Just as their perils end, the lovers are troubled by the very character flaws plaguing them from early days. Again destiny intervenes, and Elizabeth is helped in overcoming Darcy's snobbery. Cold shoulders, trials, and family pratfalls aside, throughout the novel, the two enjoy many lighthearted moments, and steamy nights that transcend their trademark Pride and Prejudice, and make for a red-blooded rollicking romance. I went into this book with an open mind because I agree with others who have said if you don't want a "variety" telling on P&P than just keep reading P&P over and over again. I enjoyed the beginning because D&E get together so must earlier in this version. I also liked that the author chose to tell his tale differently from the very beginning. So many retellings start out the same as JA and it just gets so stagnant.
I also appreciate drama to a story and there was plenty of that. Elizabeth being clairvoyant was a very interresting approach but I felt the execution was left wanting. When an author talks of old flames you just know at some point they are going to be interjected at some point in the story. Then at the beginning there was the lack of communication that was just plain frustrating. I'm not saying I did'nt finish the book or that its the worst one I've ever read but it just kind of fell apart 1/4 of the way through. Elizabeth was just living it up while her sister was lost just was not believeable and believe me it would'nt have been fun to read it with her sad and hysterical either but it just did'nt seem to be necessary either way. Once Jane was rescued we really did'nt get to read too much of her and Bingley as a couple.
If you read the other reviews they go on and on about explicit sex and Elizabeth being submissive. To that I say" yes there is sex, and yes Lizzy is less vocal."
Do not expect JA's Lizzy simply because it is not JA writting. I mean no disrespect but it is not a retelling it is a variation and because we all love the original, is'nt it great that so many feel inspired to try to recreate something unique from it? I mean you could say Burger King is a ripoff of McDonald's but they both have their purpose and specialties and many have certain things they pick out that is there favorite. I would have appreciated reading a slower frequency on the excitement. That was the biggest problem I had because as soon as one catasrophy was avoided another came and then another to the point you just wanted off the ride. I'm still glad I bought it though.

Awful! Elizabeth loses her soul and Mr. Darcy is unrecognizable.
