Out of Bounds #1

Line of Scrimmage

Rate this book
Football has been the only constant thing in my life for the last twenty years. Everything I've worked for my whole life has gotten me to this point - playing for Tampa Bay in the NFL as a starting Tight End. I'm not focused on anything other than doing my job for my team; it's everything I've ever wanted. That is, until I meet my teammates little sister. She's smart and funny and drop dead gorgeous, but she's girlfriend material and I haven't had a girlfriend in over five years. Every instinct in me tells me to back away, but the more I get to know her, the more everything about her draws me in. I know she's off limits - her brother has made that very clear, but somehow that makes the tension between us even more irresistible.

I'm finding myself willing to risk everything for her, if only she'd cross the line with me.

Another book, another disappointment.

Okay, let me try to list what I didn't like:

- the writing, specially at the beginning. It was confusing and weird, like the transition between scene and scene was nonexistent, and it made it so uncomfortable.

- the characters. nothing wrong with them, i just didn't connect with them. i felt nothing. they were so flat and unseasoned, please.

- the romance. again, felt nothing about them. they had no chemistry. this is very much an insta-love story where the characters see each other and basically fall in love and if this was one of those very short 60-page novellas, then it would be fine with it. but this is a novel with over 300 pages, the author had plenty of pages to build some type of connection and did not.

- a lot of tell and not show. they apparently had this very deep conversations and whatever but we saw almost nothing of that.

- the girl calls the guy by the last name?? a lot. and it made no sense. you're fucking each other, for fuck's sake, call him by his name? i think this is one instant where the author wanted to do that trope thing of the characters calling each other by their last name but it made no sense in this book. that only works with rivals :/

- NOTHING happens in this book. literally nothing. it's just them hanging out and having sex and that's it. over 300 pages of nothing. at the end i was already sick of it, and ended up skim-reading the last 30% of more nothingness.

- friends with benefits where??? this is something i've noticing with authors recently, them calling their books friends with benefits or friends to lovers and THEY ARE NOT. it's just people meeting and being together quite quickly. that's not friendship at all. like these two were just hanging out and having sex at the same time, that doesn't qualify as friendship.

- also, respectfully, i'm sick of the brother's friend. the brother always feel so weird and uncomfortable, like emotional incest almost :/ like 'no one can watch my sister, talk to my sister, be with my sister' etc that always reads like he's jealous and possessive and it's gross. and i wish these female characters would tell their brothers to go fucking choke on a dick, you know? like why are you letting your brother tell you who to date, girl, send him to hell.

- i'm sure there's more but i don't remember.

will not be reading the next book. goodbye.

DNF. You officially lost me at 23%, but let me tell you, it was days to even get there because I felt no interest in these people.
You know what finally broke me? That the FMC, who is the sister of an NFL player, said that she had never sat anywhere but the nosebleeds. Seems petty, i'm sure. But look, there was a strong chance I wasn't going to make it much further anyway. The only way I can describe this is that it felt like I was reading another person's cliff notes of this story.

And finally, please, for the love of GOD, stop finding your editors and alpha/beta readers on IG. Dump them and run.

*ARC REVIEW*
– 4.25 stars!
– spice: 3/5 (this is completely dependant on your overall experience/opinion on spice tho!)
first, i want to thank Erin for giving me an arc copy of this book!!

i really really enjoyed this! i absolutely loved ford & abby's characters. they were fun, inviting, easy to love, and lots of fun.

abby was a super sweet, cute, funny, and enjoyable character. she was relatable, genuine, and felt like your own personal bff throughout the story. i really enjoyed getting to see her regain her confidence after her breakup, finding herself and her happiness again. she's optimistic, caring, kind, and a sensitive lil gal like myself. she just felt like someone who you'd want to be friends with in real life and i loved her sm.

ford was a great mmc, he checked off all the boxes!! he was kind, funny, caring, & swoon-worthy. he was possessive and protective, but in all the best ways. a slightly reformed playboy who would do anything for the woman he loves and I ATE IT UP! it was honestly hard not to love him, he's such a lil softie I LOVE HIM.

ford & abby's relationship was fast-paced, a little insta-lusty if you will, which i didn't mind! i really enjoyed getting to see them develop from their friends-with-benefits agreement to lovers! their personalities meshed so well, they had great chemistry & tension, the banter was there, it was just ADORABLE. the smut was great too (if that is important to you!!!). it was evident that they just GOT each other, you know??? they were both what the other person was looking for and i loved it!!

this is a (pro) football romance, friends with benefits to lovers, teammates little sister (or brothers teammate – however you want to phrase it), forbidden romance!! its a fast-paced, easy, enjoyable read! such a great debut and such a fun lil sports romance with the perfect balance of spice and a cute little love story.

i cant wait to read the second book, Erin did such a great job setting it up to make me want to beg and plead for it to be out already!!

thank you again, Erin, for this arc! i loved getting to meet ford & abby, and congrats on the debut!!!

Overall:
It’s no secret I’m a sucker for a sport romance but throw in the trope of brothers team mate/ secret relationship? I AM LOCKED IN!

This is Erin’s debut novel and Book 1 of the Out Of Bounds series. She did an amazing job introducing the characters and building the found family bond between them. I do wish some of the scene transitions were a little smoother but still I’m excited to see whats in store for the entire crew and can’t wait for book 2 details to come out.

Highly recommend if you’re looking for a sweet, quick, open door, sports romance. Perfect for football season!

This is such a brilliant debut! Reading this book was like having a constant warm fuzzy feeling in my heart~ I loved every second of it, it was such a heartfelt book and you can tell how much love Erin put into it. For me this was the perfect blend of sports and romance and the way the sports was written it was easy to keep up with it especially if you no prior knowledge of it.
Insta love isn’t something I normally go for but Erin smashed it and made it really enjoyable. There was great chemistry from the mains from the get go that just continued to grow with the more they got to know eachother.
There was some really cute and tender moments but there was also great spice to balance it out. 2.5/5 🌶️
There was great side characters who added so much fun and love to the story and they were well fleshed out enough that I’m dying to know more about all of them.
An overall really fun and loving read.

Two stars cause it had potential and semi-good plot. This book is the perfect example of why people say “show, don’t tell.” All this book did was tell us everything, never describing how the characters felt “clenched jaw, flexing fingers”, no we were just told “she was angry”.

The characters were also flat and I couldn’t care about any of them. The backstories were sparse at best. We found out about his ex, who was apparently a huge part of his life 2 years ago, after literally 200 pages…

The characters also had very weird dialogue and they just up and walked away mid conversation sometimes which felt off. The descriptions of the clothes was the only thing that was shown not told.

The outline of the book had merit, but the pacing was off. Several times it would skip full weeks by saying “they texted”… but like what was that? Can we see their relationship grow through conversations and interactions instead of just being told it happened? That’s the whole point of the book…

The dialogue that was here was short and didn’t help the story enough, it could have really added depth. Not to mention the let down of some of the big reveals! When the brother found out about them it was practically a closed door scene! They’re kissing and next thing you know the MMC is calming the brother down…

Overall I can’t recommend this book. It has the needed plot, but not the storytelling.

4.5/5 ⭐️ | Dual POV: Ford & Abby

This was a fantastic debut novel from Erin MacKenzie! I fell in love with Ford and Abby!! Line of Scrimmage is a brother’s teammate, secret relationship, NFL football romance book.

Ford and Abby have an instant attraction/connection from the moment they meet, and it soon becomes impossible for them to stay away from each other. I loved how their relationship develops throughout the story, going from friends with benefits into something more. Ford and Abby certainty brought the HEAT! 🔥 Y'all better get ready for that elevator scene! 🥵 There were also so many swoon worthy moments that will make you feel all the feels! 🥰

First I want to say Erin — I am so proud of you!!!👏🏼 For a debut novel, I was absolutely blown away! Thank you for allowing me to be an Alpha reader for you, I’m honored you trusted me with Ford & Abby’s story!

This is book 1 in the Out of Bounds series following Ford & Abby. Abby has recently moved to Tampa to live with her brother after a bad breakup. The last thing she expects is to fall for one of her brother’s best friends/teammates — Ford Anderson.

Ford was such a perfect book boyfriend! He was sweet & caring with just a touch of protectiveness & of course a filthy mouth you can’t help but love. This man fell fast & he fell HARD. Him & Abby were just so good together! I can’t wait to get more from this series. I’m absolutely dying for Abby’s brother, Chase’s story 💕🤞🏼

DNF @ 20%

Hmmmm... where to start. This book was just one big major checklist.

Grab the milk. Put it in the cart. Take out of the cart. Put in on the conveyor belt. Buy the milk.

LITERALLY, the entire 13 chapters that I read were like this! I read many other reviews stating the same thing! The book was so frustrating to read. It definitely didn't hold my attention! I'm baffled by all the 4 and 5 star reviews. Granted, most of them were ARC and beta readers...

I'm not usually one to post a ton of bad reviews, but I've seen so much hype about this book on Bookstagram that I'm wondering where I can find the "amazing" book everyone is talking about. I know this is a debut novel for the author, but I would recommend changing quite a few things around on the next book. At this rate, I won't read or recommend the author's books unless some things change with the checklist writing style.

This style of writing is not my favorite: lots of telling, and little showing.
Added to that, I caught a couple of typos/mistakes that.. usually just take my enjoyment out of reading. And that too while I was not taken in by the story.
Unfortunately this is a dnf for me.

This book! Once I started reading I couldn't put it down. I fell in love with all the characters, even the background characters.

A little insight about a line of scrimmage-
Abby is Chase's little sister who was off limits to all his football teammates but Ford, felt drawn into her the moment he caught sight of her. From the moment him and Abby introduced one another they felt a chemistry that they couldn't push aside. They become inseparable becoming friends with benefits then progressing into something even greater then what either of them were looking for. Once they became something more in each other's life they started having a hard time hiding their relationship from everyone including her brother. Chase finds out and reacts away that a normal older protective brother would react. I'm not going to spoil anything more. If I could I would continue going on and on. Lol 🤣

My opinion-
Honestly, this book has been one of my favorites. There was not any unrealistic drama. The speed of the relationship throughout the book was at a perfect pace. Honestly It was perfectly written! Definitely something that I would read over and over again. I will definitely be buying the physical copy to add to my shelf. The author did a fantastic job writing these characters especially Ford. He's the definition of a perfect man and Abby having little corks throughout the book made her seem realistic. If it makes sense. Thank you to the author for giving me the chance to be one of the people to read this book before it releases to the public. It was an honor to read this beautiful written book. Definitely a over 5 star read. 🤍

Line of Scrimmage is Erin MacKenzie's debut novel and book 1 in the Out of Bounds series. This book was so damn good! I loved reading every minute of it! I couldn't put my Kindle down. This has a brother's best friend/teammate, a secret relationship, he falls first, and no third-act breakup what more can you ask for? The chemistry and sexual tension between Ford and Abby were so good! I enjoyed the banter and swoon-worthy moments throughout the book. Ford Anderson is one of my favorite book boyfriends. I loved it when he would call her "Princess" it was the cutest ever. I'm also a sucker for text messages in books they are my favorite! I absolutely go feral when the MMC is in a backward hat. Everything Ford did for Abby I couldn't stop smiling. The spicy was hot AF. I loved every single thing in this book. I can't wait for book 2 in this series! Thank you Erin MacKenzie for an ARC copy of your book I greatly appreciate it! All thoughts are my own.

I😭FINISHED😭IT😭

"on the football field, there’s this thing called the line of scrimmage. it’s imaginary, but both sides know it’s there. […] the line you aren’t supposed to cross. the way this thing started with abby kind of reminds me of that. i knew the moment i met abby that i’d be crossing a line with her and thankfully, she crossed it with me."

5 STARS EASILY.

This is book 1 in the Out of Bounds series and Erin’s debut novel. As soon as I saw that Erin was writing a sports romance I knew I need to read it and it did not disappoint.

This story follows Ford and Abby. Abby has recently moved to Tampa to live with her brother after a breakup. Ford is only concerned about football. However, when Ford and Abby meet, they are instantly drawn to each other and are the last thing the other expects.

I absolutely loved Ford. He was the perfect book boyfriend. He fell so hard for Abby immediately. He was sweet, caring and just a touch of protective with such a filthy mouth.
The way their relationship progressed was so natural and beautiful. I ate up their banter up and they had great chemistry from the get go. I mean the elevator scene!! I was not expecting that or so early on in the book LOL. LOVED IT.

This was a fast pace, easy, enjoyable read. When I started this it was so hard to put down. This was so good for debut and I cannot wait to continue the series.

Thank you Erin for eARC.

I truly believe this book is not even real because no guy would ever act like Ford and no girl, no sane girl would ever act like Abby. I think that the second book was better than the first it had more substance and had that “it could actually happen in the real world” because they were more real characters Nate and Mia. This really had no plot and just complete fall in love, trope was lackluster to say the least. I thought Abby had zero personality had no consideration for others but herself and I know she was going through some trauma, but she hardly addressed it ever in the book. She’s not an amazing friend. She doesn’t really have an amazing job and her personality is severely bland but yet Ford thinks she’s the best thing that ever happened in this world, so I don’t get it. So I would totally recommend the second book. I’m on the third book right now and I have high expectations because I feel like the more you write these kind of books the more you will grow and the more it will make sense.

I JUST finished this book, and I probably should collect my thoughts plan out a review, but I need to talk about it now! Erin HOW is this your debut novel?! This book AHHH! I just want to yell to everyone to go fucking read this immediately! (Well on release day!)

Ford and Abby are definitely couple goals! I probably sent you way to many messages, but I had to gush about my favorite scenes. You made Ford IRRESISTIBLE, he’s definitely a new book boyfriend. The things this man says, and just how freaking understanding and observant he is! I can’t even review this, so if I just yell READ HER BOOK. It’s such a great read, I love all the characters and I can not wait for more. Go preorder this book, like yesterday!

out 9/26, thanks for the arc, Erin! Her debut novel! I have been excited to read this for months. It did not disappoint. I am weak in the knees for certain microtropes and the fact that Erin included backwards hat action.. gray sweatpants.. “good girl” in bed.. wearing his jersey. I simply love a book where they have to sneak around (she is his teammates little sister) and this one had so many good moments where they had to hide their relationship. fords love confession though?! sooo good 🥰😍

Can’t wait to read the rest of the series!

Such an amazing debut novel!!! The narration was absolute perfection and I was here giving myself chores to do just so I could continue listening.

From the moment Ford saw Abby, he couldn’t deny the pull that was between them. There’s something about when a MMC falls first and knows from the moment he sees his girl that she’s the one that makes me go feral. And on top of that, the secret relationship/friends with benefits/brother’s teammate tropes - SO FREAKING GOOD! Anytime Ford said “good girl” I was puddle 🫠

i loved this!! it was a super cute & fun read! abby and ford were a 10/10 couple. i love a good brother’s best friend and erin did it really well!

i very much loved how this wasn’t a normal (i guess) sports romance in the sense where the athlete didn’t spend the whole book talking about how much money he makes; it was SO refreshing

i also love that this is going to be a series & that when you’re reading this, you can tell the direction erin’s going in for the next book & how she’s setting it up and i’m excited for it!

thank you erin for the arc!!

abby moves in with her brother after a bad relationship and then enters ford - her brothers friend and teammate. they start as fwb and what do you know? sweet baby ford falls head over heels.

their connection and chemistry and everything was perfect. i don’t know why i waited so long to read this but im glad i finally did
