RanDumb The #1 Humor Bestseller, with a foreword by Robbie Williams. Welcome to La-La Land. Your Irish dreamer, schemer, drinker, thinker, bon viveur, enfant terrible, raconteur and fan of foreign words in italics, Mark Hayes. Strap yourself in for a wild and hilarious ride around America's craziest city with Ireland's craziest writer. Bored and tired of his successful career back home, Mark Hayes knows there has to be something worth living for. Something more than running a translation business and buying new T-shirts on the internet. Even though they're very nice T-shirts. His to be a famous actor-slash-writer. His own star on Hollywood Boulevard (between Lionel Ritchie and Dolly Parton would be acceptable). A Beverly Hills mansion with a model in every bedroom. Enough booze to float his luxury yacht on. Determined to make it happen, Mark leaves behind Ireland's green and pleasant land and moves to LA to chase his dream, to have it all - parties and glamour and girls and fame and the bright, shining lights of Hollywood, the whole world at his feet... Waking up the first morning on the back seat of a car in a Denny's parking lot, with no idea about how he's actually supposed to make it, Mark realises it might not be quite as easy as he'd first thought. RanDumb is the hilarious tale of what happens when one charismatic but clueless Irish dreamer refuses to accept his fate and goes on an adventure that would make Indiana Jones feel the need for a bit of a lie down. With breathtaking swagger Mark Hayes lifts the lid on the real Los Angeles and lives the life... so you don't have to. But be this book might inspire you to change your life too.
RanDumb: The Random Dumb Adventures of an Irish Guy in LA (Kindle Edition) Think of this character as your little brother, launching himself daily onto the streets of LA - with nothing more than a bucket full of Irish charm, limited funds and an occasional search on Craigslist at his disposal and you get the picture.
It's unsurprising then, that LA occasionally bites him on the ass and you find yourself heaving a huge sigh of relief when he manages to make it back to `a' bed at night!
Life lived on a wing-and-a-prayer conceals a mighty determination to succeed, a surprising gift for juggling several balls in the air, at any given time and a sharp-witted, intelligent man. Will Lady Luck stay with him? A very entertaining and laugh out-loud romp.
A superb read - I can't recommend this enough. Not what I expected, but then I didn't really know what to expect, but it was way way more funny than I had hoped it would be. Follow the adventures (and mishaps) of Mark from Cork as he settles in LA using his downright good charm, good looks and with a little luck of the Irish thrown in. I felt that I was watching Mark or "Merrick" as it sounds with his Cork accent, as he found somewhere to live, met new friends, bought his first wheels, tried to get a job, partied on and then found himself "randumbly" playing football chez Robbie Williams! I love the writing style of Mr Hayes, it's like he's telling you all about his experiences on a one to one. This is an excellent read and I couldn't put it down and read a little bit every chance I got. Now I can't wait for Randumber...the continuing diary of the wonderful Irishman in Los Angeles. Giddy up...
Literary gold - especially for a first novel. The author, Mark Hayes, is a mad man and this book made me laugh so much. He's a funny Irish guy who taught this American girl what the American dream means.
I highly recommend this book for anyone interested in living the "LA lifestyle" vicariously through an insightful Irish guy. I felt like I was there with him -- or even in his head -- as he described his interesting, bizarre, and sometimes wild experiences while acclimating to life in LA.
Mark's writing voice is unique and fun. Beware though: you may start calling people apes, start wuu'ing, or saying other odd words like "tut" unexpectedly after reading. As Mark would say, "Read on!"
One of my favorites. I was completely caught by Mr Merky & his adventures! He has a great talent for playing with words and the way of describing the crazy situations in which he finds himself is really hilarious ! Is it obvious I'm completely seduced by the character ?? :) Super funny, charming & endearing too, I was really feeling like living these randumb slices of life in LA by his side. A real pleasure. I've placed the second part of his crazi-er adventures "Randumb-er" on the currently-reading shelf !! Duu !
Enjoyable read for yucks. Classic story of the dreamer who moves to Hollywood. This story revolves around Mark Hayes, straight from Ireland and his misadventures into Hollywood lifestyle.
