Mia Carrington is struggling to come to terms with the fact that she killed a man, while trying to find a balance between her role as the Princess of the Light Elves and attempting to lead the life of a normal human teenager. Too bad her dual life doesn't come with an instruction manual. Just when she thinks that fate can't throw anything else at her, the Duchess Isobel is found on the brink of death and Mia’s boyfriend, Jacoby, is the only suspect. Despite the suspicion surrounding him, Mia is sure of the innocence of the boy she loves and she is determined to prove it no matter the risk. The problem is, the one thing that could help save Isobel and clear Jacoby can only be found in the shadows of the Underworld--the last place in the universe Mia should ever step foot in.
Erica Cope lives in the Midwest with her husband, three children, three dogs and three cats (she has a thing for the number three). She has an unhealthy addiction to coffee, a bad habit of binge watching shows on Netflix and eating pretzel M&Ms for breakfast. When Erica isn't writing you can find her pretending to play her guitar, reading or baking something delicious.
I literally just finished the first book and had to dive into the second one straight away! I mean, look at this beautiful cover!! Erica Cope did it once again to blow my mind with this novel. It was just as mysterious and enchanting as Lark but even more passionate and rowdy, so it was far better. I finished it in three hours just because it's impossible to put the book down.
If you expected the story to turn complicated, I bet you weren't expecting to become this much. You get to see so much development in all the characters and of the story as well, they all become more refined, more polished and dangerous. When before you had a good YA, now you have an Excellent YA!
This drives me crazy, the love trio. But I secretly love it. In the Shadows shows us the new side of this three people. A new side of Grey, Jacoby and Mia, where they are way more confused about each other and you get to presence much more indecisiveness by Mia, because she knows she loves Grey but a future with him is impossible and with Jacoby she can see a future but the feelings aren't as strong as they should be. Whilst in Lark, they were all trying to get used to this trio so it didn't really made a difference. OMG, It drove me mad this constant bicker between Jacoby and Grey, but a "good" type of mad because it added so much tension to the book that you could feel it in the air. So it was funny!
I was hoping the two of them were past all of this - they rarely speak, but it's still a vast improvement over the constant 'my penis is bigger than yours' crap they've pulled before.
You want to know what I had the feeling was going to happen but didn't want it to become true? A certain Breakup.... I AM SO SAD......
"You sure do know the way to a girl's heart," I laugh.
"Yours is the only heart I ever want to make a home in." he whispers, uncharacteristically serious and with a penetrating look in his emerald green eyes that causes my breath to catch in my chest.
Mia is so much stronger and independent that in the first book, but she also carries the guilt of having killed a boy. So there is a slightly melancholic side to her as well, but it quickly fades into perseverance to save her family and friends from Dugan. There are way more challenges in In The Shadows for her to face alone and where she will have to make risky decisions that will cost her everything she knows, but I think that she overall did them quite well even though she may be in trouble...
Isobel is for sure one of my favorite characters because she is funny and she's always happy, that it adds a "light" feeling to the book. Though in here she will be more in the spotlight and she will be used by the bad guys, so throughout the story she doesn't get only happy things. But she's a great character that I didn't even liked that much in Lark, but now? I love her! I think the she's been a supporting friend for Mia in her decisions and helping her blending in with the Elf's and acting as their princess.
There is a bad guy that will drive you crazy. I had a feeling that he was going to be the one screwing everyone and I hit the jackpot because it was him, but even though I had a feeling it was so awesomely written that I did stopped distrusting him and started blaming someone else for a while. I admit that I was fooled. Erica Cope did good!
The Dark Elf's don't have that much of an appearance what really bummed me out, but their presence was felt with all of the damages they made all throughout the book... Badass bad guys they are! And there is new Efl's!!!!! Shadow Elf's..... How cool is that? Super cool.
Prepare yourself for changes, because this book is dramatically good. Erica Cope is an excellent writer who should be having way more attention with these novels, so if you read these books share your thoughts with the world and invite people to enter this addicting world.
I always go in to a second book in a series with lower expectations. Mainly because I know that the book exists purely to advance the story and move characters around and create new ones to lead up to the big climactic finish in book three. While this is true with In The Shadows, this book holds it's own and creates a dynamic between Mia, Jacoby, and Grey that leaves wanting more! I loved the suspense Erica creates with the missing teens, and the traitor among her own people. You just never know what's going to happen! I'm definitely looking forward to seeing what happens in the end. What chaos did Mia unleash, will Jacoby stop being an idiot and realize that Mia loves him? How will Mia decide her fate? Save her family or lose them forever? My expectations were far exceeded my this second book and I know the third one will be just as amazing!
Whew! Finally finished. I wouldn't classify this book as a young adult. "Young adult" implies a certain maturity level I don't feel this book meets. I do think Mrs Cope is a talented writer. This book would be perfect for middle schoolers, maybe even junior high. This issue made it hard for me to get through this book, hence the two stars. It's really hard to enjoy a book when you can't relate to the main character. Not only could I not relate, but I hated Mia. Her constant self-pity and selfish rants made for a maddening read. I understand a hero with self doubt, but this went way beyond that. Enough that I felt her only motives for anything she did was purely selfish and not because she actually cared. She hurts everyone, and I do mean everyone. Is she really the hero here? I also like my heron intelligent, and she's also lacking in that department too. Why would anyone with a brain step into a world they know nothing about and not ask questions? It just made me hate her more. Ok, let's look at Grey. His character creeps me out. He's been watching her since she was in diapers, and is more of a father figure. Why is he a love interest? It's creepy. It reminds me of Twighlight's scenario with Jacob and the baby...... Ewwwwww! There is also nothing remotely exciting about him. He's pretty and that's it. There is no personality there except that of a father figure. I just don't get it. In this book feelings come back into play because he holds her hand and hugs her. What? It just didn't make any sense to me. Jacoby was he most disappointing of all. He was he only reason I came back to this series. What happened to his personality? He was funny, care-free, and multi-faceted in "Lark". He was completely flat in this book, serious and sappy. Not one ounce of humor or snarkiness. Why the change? This is the reason that I will not be returning for the third installment of this book. Well, that and nothing ever happens. I really wanted to enjoy this book, but I just didn't. :(
In the Shadows continues where Lark left off as Mia struggles to find balance in her new life as the Light Elf Princess. The drama picks up as the people close to her in the human world begin to question her sudden change in behavior and relationships with her friends and family begin to deteriorate. When humans begin to disappear in a not-so-random fashion and Isobel ends up poisoned with Jacoby being the only suspect, Mia has no choice but to venture into the Underworld to find some answers and the journey ends up being way more than she bargained for.
In this installment, we see her relationship with both Grey and Jacoby change and grow. For those who are Team Jacoby (like me!), you will be very happy to see that he is just as mischievous and flirty as ever and the steaminess definitely heats up between the two of them. However, do not despair Grey fans, Mia continues to struggle with her feelings toward him and their relationship strengthens and progresses as well.
One of my favorite things about this book is that we get to see more of the Underworld during Mia’s expedition. Erica’s detailed descriptions of the eerie landscape and the disturbing creatures she stumbles upon paint a very creepy picture and I loved every minute of it!
Overall, this sequel really does have it all—drama, romance, action—and it definitely leaves you wanting more. It’s going to be very hard to wait for book 3!!
In the Shadows is the second installment in EMC’s Lark series. At the start of this book, Mia has already discovered her Elvish roots and is trying to figure out a balance between her new life and her old life.
This book is classic YA Fantasy. I stress that because lately it seems like YA books have been morphing into Adult books—lots of heavy subject matter and plotlines that seem to be more interested in shocking a reader than in telling a story. This book takes me back to the reasons I fell in love with the genre in the first place. The main character, Mia, is a true teenage girl and her concerns (though vast and spanning two worlds) are in many ways, teen concerns. Cheerleading, what should I wear, boys, friendships, etc. It’s refreshing, it’s sweet… it’s fun.
Don’t get me wrong… there’s also Elvish adventure. And I don’t want to say what that is or I’ll give the plot away. You’ll just have to find out for yourselves ☺
The love story in this book isn’t so much a triangle as it is a circle… for me at least. Haha. I say that because every time I’ve read a YA story where the girl’s heart is being tugged in two directions, I ALWAYS have a strong opinion about at least one of the guys. In this case… not so much. I love them both for their differences and strengths and that’s one of the reasons that I love following this series.
Five enthusiastic stars! Loved so much about this story and can’t wait to read more.
Argh! The drama! I seriously hope Mia defeats the Dark Elf king and I'm also holding out hope that somehow she will get her family back when it's all over. The love triangle! My god! I hate them... But at the same time I love them. It just breaks my heart though with Jacoby and Grey. They're both really decent guys I and don't know who's team I should be on!!!
I didn't expect the story to take the turn it did. The story drew me in just as much as the first one if not more so. I feel things in the story are reaching there peak. I can't wait to see what twist and turns the next book will bring.
I love this series. Can't wait for book 3. I'm really want her to end up with Grey. I just love him, but Jacolby is great too. I may be a little torn and normally I hate love triangles. I don't like to choose a side, hoping and praying the author picks the guy I want.
I didn't enjoy this novel nearly as much as I hoped I would mostly because of Mia. This time around I found her more insecure, childish and annoying than before. I also hate the direction things are going with this love triangle. I'll finish the series but this definitely was not a favourite.
In the Shadows is the perfect sequel to Lark. I could not put it down until I finished it, even while cooking dinner. I love the ending and I cannot wait for book 3!
So the first book lost points for the kinda sorta wannabe love triangle, but the story was cute and Jacoby was fun. Anyway the decisive (or so I thought) ending made me look forward to picking up the second.....and here we are.
I have no words, but I do offer a sincere and utter disgust with the bandwagon behavior authors are displaying. What, you don't believe me? Check out the dunce cap worthy to-do list for YA and call me crazy- but gee it matches the formulaic layout for like.....everything lately.
Every book must have a love triangle. Check. The triangle must go to ridiculous unbelievable atrociously offensively vapid and transparent lengths to endure over multiple books. Check. The girl MUST try out each guy before eventually at some point in the far future maybe deciding which she wants to mess around with long term before potentially switching back. Several times. Check. Excessive, nauseating and overdone angst-y turmoil as the MC debates the merits of each guy as the MC has "feelings" for both at the same time....for SEVERAL books. Check.
*Sigh* Well that actually sums up my issues with this book pretty well. I was pretty happy when I thought this book bucked the trend with a mild almost triangle that was decisively settled so we could enjoy a pretty good elf style love story. The relationship developed and it was cute, and a reasonable compliment to the other story lines. She faced the challenges presented by her evil uncle and his army of dark elves, a devastating choice to save the world, crazed traitors in the castle itself... Plenty of fodder for a great story there right? Nope not good enough.
Oh and Jacoby! What the heck was up with Jacoby?!?!? Really. He smirked or sly smiled at literally every thing she said, he had no other expressions (except puppy dog eyes at the end). Those are jerk or lame villain expressions! It was kinda gross and not romantic or cocky or whatever the author was going for. He's NOT the character we loved in the first book.
I really love how this new trend shows young womens' strengths. You know decisiveness, strength, determination and dedication, commitment and loyalty.... Oh wait. It doesn't.
Once again I have fallen deeply into the world that Erica Cope has created. All of my favorite characters are back and ready for action.
Mia is still getting use to her new reality of being the princess to the Light Elf King. She even more so in this book yearn for a normal life, a life without elves and magic. However, I really don't see that because she is truly of both worlds. She likes both her homes and she has people that she cares about in both worlds and in one case (Jacoby) she has someone in a similar boat, being half-blood and all. Mia personality does shift a little in this book, she take a little bit of a darker turn and I got to see more of her faults, which ironically makes her human. I also see just how amazing she really is; I wish I could say more but then I would spoil everything.
Can I just say that Alberico is just the sweetest dad ever. I so totally love his character even though we don't get to see to much of him.
The big mystery about what happened to Isobel...I so knew who did it! I still can't figure out why this person did it. How long have they been plotting? How could no one know after all this time? How could Mia not see what was in front of her face the whole time, when the Sol gave her a warning?
So here is my main concern, Grey and Jacoby. I have never in my life been so heart-wrenched over two guys. They are completely different; I love both of them and I really don't know if I could choose. Mia is a fantastic character and I can see her with both guys, so I don't know what is going to happen. Which is leading me to a fear that maybe one of them will be killed off in the last book, which I am screaming no to.
There is also a nice little surprise at the end of this book. We get to read a scene from Lark, from Grey's POV. After reading Grey's POV and adding that to the little tidbit I read at near the end of the book, by heart is floating and breaking all at once, for both Greyson and Jacoby.
Mia is still struggling to deal with the events that occurred during her escape from the dark elves. And when Ethan, a dark lackey shows up with threats she knows things are going to get worse before they get better. When her friend Isobel is poisoned her boyfriend Jacoby is imprisoned for it. Mia, Grey and Adele travel to the underworld to find a cure for Isobel and clear Jacoby's name.
I still think Mia is a good character but I was also still frustrated with a lot of her decision making. Granted, she was given a lot to deal with but she didn't take advantage of the fact that she had several people in her life that she could trust completely. When given a warning that there is someone she can't trust she immediately starts to question those closest to her instead of suspecting everyone. I also feel like she was way too hard on Jacoby at the end. That being said, I have been thoroughly enjoying this series.
I liked the first book pretty well and felt like she had a start to a good storyline. The first book left off in a pretty good place to make you want to read the second and see what happens next. But this second book is just so slow! Nothing happens. Just get a lot of repetitious details that she covers in the first - like what dress she's going to wear, her bedroom, the castle descriptions, etc., etc. Felt too repetitive, and not enough movement forward with the storyline. I like the love story build-up. They seem to be friends who have fun together in more than just a physical way, and I like that. But the plot doesn't have much movement. Or, it does, but it's so sudden, and then nothing again. Then something sudden, and nothing. It's not "bad," just not holding my interest as well as the first.
Unfortunately I didn't enjoy this one nearly as much as the first. I found Mia to be a very unlikable character this time around. She was so negative and sarcastic and WHINY and SELFISH. And all of this negativity and bad attitude was directed toward the people who love her, who are trying to help and protect her. I was so sick of her by the end. The other problem I had was Mia and Jacoby: they are entirely unexciting as a couple - no chemistry, no tension, I'm so bored with them. There IS some potential with Mia and the other what's-his-name, but it bothers me a little bit that he's been watching over her ever since she was born... and now he's in love with her. Kinda weird.
I am actually planning on reading the third book. This one left off just when things were getting interesting and I'd like to see what happens. But hopefully Mia can develop some redeeming qualities in book #3.
3/22/14- What was the point of this book in the series? Mia becomes selfish and loses her ability to think important things through. Grey does nothing. Jacoby loses his great personality. Nothing important happens in the entire book until the end when we find the traitor (which was super obvious) and one bad thing happens. Finally when Mia decides to not be selfish at the end, Jacoby makes it all about him....? There were some interesting things that happened, but there was so much re-telling from book 1 and not enough story for this to be a second book. I'm finished and I'm left disappointed.
Well.. wow.. this was so messed up... I mean...I don't know where to start... I have too many thoughts and feelings warring inside me. Jacoby somehow disappointed me a little in this book... Greyson...I don't know, I even sort of liked him this time around. Well, some times. I am so confused I don't know what to say. Or think. The ending was oh so bad and sad and messed up. I was like "What did just happen?" for about 5 minutes straight. And I'm still kinda shocked. And in need of reading book 3 right now.
I like this story and I like the characters but I feel like the author is leaving a lot unexplained. Maybe it all makes sense to the author since she wrote it, but there are a lot of things that are just assumed and not explained. I've enjoyed this just barely enough to be curious how it ends but I'm less impressed with this volume in the trilogy than the first. I also really hate the love triangle - those need to stop.
A cruel twist for Jacoby. Lark's life is now forever changed but if she thinks that fairy hocus pocus will protect those she loves from Dugan I dont think that will happen. She has been constantly making the wrong decision and she is to easily fooled or to trusting of those around her. Hopefully she will be more weary in the next book.
I can't really rate this or say much especially since I didn't finish it, but i just couldn't. I was kind of forcing myself to keep going. And even though I couldn't this wasn't a bad book or series but it definitely wasn't for me right now. Mia started to get on my nerves and I think thats why it took me so long to even continue this series.
