“But that kiss? I was just fulfilling a promise I made you before you moved to New Mexico. Remember?”
The happy couple....
Dakota Lansing is an orphaned cowgirl playing host to her Surprise Step-Sister. Zach Chisholm is a cowboy who…um…I don’t really remember, but he’s definitely a cowboy because his last name is Chisholm and he drives a pickup.
The setting....
The 8,000,000-acre (approx.) Chisholm Ranch near Whitehorse, Montana, which conveniently features a mysterious graveyard, numerous villain-proof hidey-holes and a water cistern that becomes vitally important to the plot.
The storytelling....
Yowza.
It’s all very exciting. And when I say “all,” I mean there’s a LOT of shit going down on the Old Chisholm Homestead.
Even without reading the previous five books in the series, the identity of the Disguised Serial Killer is blindingly obvious – but really, who the hell cares, because it gives us plenty of fun “Hey, yoohoo, the villain is RIGHT THERE, dumbass!” moments.
The romance....
Hmm…let me think for a moment…. I believe there was some smooching and maybe some under-the-clothes touching at some point, but then The Crazy took over.
The recommendation....
I went with a C grade because this book fulfilled most of my expectations of an over-the-top Harlequin Intrigue suspense plot, but the romance got lost in the dust.
NOTE: I read a digital ARC provided by the publisher via NetGalley.
Well I finally finished this series - and one I'll definitely be reading again!
I was slightly worried I might not even finish it when Aggie was so determined and was crazy stalker-ish and ended up kidnapping Emma!
I decided then to take it one book at a time and not read too quick. But I kinda wished I had! I honestly forgotten some of the daughter-n-laws names and really couldn't Remember too much about Mcall, her grandma or great-grandma and the love of her life!
Super shocked how it ended up and how the stories interweaved in this conclusion! So I recommend reading these closer together, not more than a few days to a week apart. If Ms. Daniels ever re-releases any- love to see more about the other boys and wife's interweaves into each other's stories as each of the other sons had their story.
A fast paced roantic suspense novel which kept me holding my breath till the end. When a strange woman turns up on his doorstep for a date he didn't make he figures the gentlemanly thing to do is to go with her but when he wakes up in the morning with no memory and a missing woman. When Dakota, a woman from his childhood, shows up looking for her sister they decide to work together to find out what is going on.
Sixth in the Chisholm Cattle Company series, in which we finally learn who is at the heart of the bad things that keep happening to Hoyt, his latest wife, Emma, and the six boys, now grown men, that make up this memorable family.
This time, Dakota Lansing is certain she would prefer to be anywhere but on the Chisholm ranch when she goes there to find out what happened to the half-sister she just learned about at her late father's recent funeral. What she learns isn't what she was expecting, nor was she prepared to deal with the feelings she thought she'd buried re: Zach Chisholm.
He's knows he feels it, too, but how can he convince Dakota he'd never hurt a woman when those scratches on his face tell her something else. Ditto, the blood on her sister's cell phone and the dress she was wearing when she met with Zach. Thus begins the end of the saga where the answers to the questions that rose through the other five installments and this one finally begin to be revealed.
Like with Shakespeare, all's well that ends well, but what a ride getting there!
I read the entire series except for the Tanner and Billie Ray story. The comments weren’t to good on that one. It worked because I missed the book with the hanging end. We must remember these are Harlequin—shorter books with quick development. She is a really good writer. My only complaint is I wish these books were longer and a little more developed. The characters are developed well in their story but they are never revisited. At the end one couple was called husband and wife—when was the wedding? Are the rest all still engaged? Good short Harlequins!
Well the cliffhanger finally ends. Talk about someone being insanely jealous! Hoyt and Zane were the heroes. Now Zane and Dakota’s meeting was rather cruel and involved Dakota’s supposed half sister, Courtney. It really gets pretty twisted has it continues. Now Agatha (Aggie) Wells has already been murdered (previous book) but Emma remembers what Aggie told her. There are some unsavory people who are also involved.
What a great way to end this series! This book brought out secrets, lies and an end to the Chisholm's life long problem. I loved reading about Zach and Dakota's story. Gotta love all those hot Chisholm men!
I found this book to be romantic and very exciting right till the end. I hope the other books in the series are just as good. I gave the book 5 stars for this reason. There was nothing about the book that I didn't like.
Once again she follows up with the Chisholm family. All 6 of the boys and possible brides and things always happen to at least one of the. This time it's Zane's turn. I couldn't put it down. It had all kinds of twists and turns.
What a great end to the series!. There were so many twists and turns leading to a lot of suspense in typical BJ Daniels style Of you get a chance be sure to read through all the books: they're worth it!
This has been a wonderful series. !oved the characters and all the intrigue . Loved the characters and all of the thrill and family feelings. Love this writer can't wait for the next story!
5stars. This is the final book in the Chisholm family's stories although each book is about how each son finds love all books need to be read in order as there is the running thread throughout all the books of Hoyt and Emma Chisholm that finds it's climax in this book. Great series recommended read
No words to describe the action and suspense in this book. BJ has away of keeping her readers hooked from the first age. She provides actions and suspense throughout her novels. Great series.
The publisher provided me with a copy of this book to review via NetGalley.
This book starts off with an awkward tone as Zane meets Courtney, a woman who he has apparently been in contact with through email thanks to a dating service, but it turns out he was not the one who sent those emails to her. Of course he isn’t about to let this beautiful woman slip away so he agrees to go on a date with her.
Now you’d think Courtney would be the main female character in this story and the one Zane is destined to fall in love with. Perhaps she is. However the book quickly shifts to introduce Dakota Lansing and for a second I felt a bit confused by this. More surprising is that Courtney and Dakota are sisters, half sisters to be exact. Let the drama begin.
My initial issue with this book was that it jumped around a lot randomly with no breaks to show a scene change. One paragraph involves Zane, a couple paragraphs later it’s Emma and Mrs. Crowley, then suddenly it’s Dakota. I felt there were simply too many characters thrown at the reader within the first two chapters with little story between them that it became confusing and a lot to take in. It would have been better if the character introductions were drawn out just a little bit so as it didn’t feel like the author was rushing to get all the main characters in the story from page one. My second issue was with the formatting, which may have simply been the version I acquired through Netgalley, since after the second chapter there were random chapter breaks. The chapter breaks were there but they seemed to be quite intermittent after chapter three, some would be there and others wouldn’t. For example, break for chapter eight and ten were in the book, but the one for chapter nine was missing. Not a huge issue but it did feel odd to have some of them missing.
As the story began to progress I have to admit I was quite drawn into it, once I got used to the random switches and lack of breaks. I was especially intrigued to find out more about Mrs. Crowley as well as the mystery behind Courtney. Though at this point it felt more like a mystery novel than a romance one, but that was fine as it was getting interesting.
For the majority of the story there is the focus on the mystery surrounding Courtney, about Hyot’s old wives, and who Mrs. Crowley is and what she is up to. Now this certainly kept my attention throughout however I must admit it did not feel like I was reading a romance novel. Let’s face it, books written in nearly every genre often have some romance in them and that’s how this book felt, like it was a mystery/suspense novel with a love story added to it, not a romance novel with a bit of suspense thrown in. Not that I’m complain because, even though I felt I had the mystery figured out quite early in the book, I was still intrigue to see what twists would pop up next, which questions would be answered and which ones would only lead to more questions. At this point the romance was just a nice addition to the mystery.
It was well over half way through when any sign of the romance aspect of the book came to be. Zane and Dakota have been through quite a lot at this point and there’s so much more ahead for them, and the entire Chisholm family. Yet that does not stop them from exploring their love for each other. We know that Dakota had a crush on Zane when they were younger but only now does he admit that he had also liked her back then as well.
While the romance portion of the book was for the most part nonexistent, and when it did show up it was only very small bits, I did thoroughly enjoy this book. The major draw for me was the mystery, and as the end of the book came up and everything unfolded I really enjoyed the pace at which things came, keeping me turning pages wanting to know just what would happen next and if things would turn out good or bad for certain characters. I think the book will appeal a bit more to those who enjoy mystery novels than those who like romance, but I would suggest the book to anyone who enjoys either genres or is simply looking for something good to read.
Now that I have read this book I think I will take some time in the future and read the previous novels in this series to see what each of the other stories entail. Wrangled also makes me want to go read more mystery/intrigue novels, whether they have romance in them or not.
4 STARS this is the first of the series that I have read and it kept me in suspense till the end. Lots of drama, lots of family connections. Good fast read. was one love scene that I skipped over. Zane Chisholm opens his door to see good looking young lady who was expecting him to be ready for thier date. All she saw was a guy dirty, worn cloths acting like he wasn't expecting her. Someone signed Zane up for a dating service and had been emailing Courtney Baxter pretending to be Zane. Zane invited her into his house to figure out what was going on. Zane said if she did not mind he could hurry shower and still take her out for a date. Next morning Zane was woken up early by his brother had the worst headache and scratches all over his face and no memory about what happened last night. He left for the day with his brother and when he got back into town town he found Dakota Lansing demanding after she slugged him where was her sister. They tried to piece it together found Courtney phone under Zane bed when it rang and it had blood on it. Zane had no idea that Dakota had a sister. Dakota just found out a few weeks ago after her dad died that she had a half sister. She knew her sister had stolen her diary as a teenager that she had a bad crush on Zane and planned to marry him someday. Even though he would not kiss or date her. She was a lot younger than him. They also figured out that two weeks ago when someone broke into his house they used a check and his computer to sign him up for the dating service and made him and Courtney match up. They went to hospital and had Zane blood checked for drugs and DNA off blood on phone. Went to room Courtney was staying and realized she only had one suitcase of clothes and found 10,000 dollar cash. Found name and address on the suitcase and left to try and find out more about Courtney. Were they really sisters. Who was setting Zane up. Who was trying to kill his stepmother? Was Courtney alive or dead? I wish I had read the other books before this one. I really enjoyed the story and the characters and would read more from BJ Daniels in the future. I was given this ebook to read in exchange of honest review from Netgalley. 06/05/2012 Pub Harlequin Harlequin Intrigue
I've read a couple of books by Daniels now and I'm really liking her writing style. There's something about the flow and characters that just draws you in keeps you reading. Even though the writing isn't complicated and the mystery is pretty easy to figure out early on in the story I still found myself very entertained throughout and enjoyed watching everything unfold. With previous storylines wrapping up, family secrets being exposed, old attractions being rekindled and danger around every turn there's a lot going on in Wrangled and it's a very good ride.
I really enjoyed the relationship between Zane and Dakota and that they had some past history together. It's been years since they've really seen one another but when Zane is framed for the disappearance of a young woman Dakota cares about the two end up working together to uncover the truth and old attractions end up being too hard to ignore.
There's a lot of respect and trust between them despite the rough reunion and I liked how they worked together as equals. Dakota's not one to sit in the background and watch and I loved that about her. Heat-wise there's a little kissing with sex scenes that are nearly the fade-to-black variety. It's a nice romance but more sweet than steamy and plays a secondary role to the mystery and investigation
If you haven't read the rest of the series the secondary storyline that deals with the Chisholm family parents and their housekeeper can be a little difficult to get into since you go in missing a lot of back story. Once I got it all figured out though I found it fascinating. I'll definitely be going back to the beginning of the series the next chance I get to see where it all started. It really does fine as a stand alone but I think the overall experience would be so much better if you've read the series in order.
Wrangled is a quick read that moves along at a nice pace with likable characters and a nice touch of danger that'll get your heart pounding. It's a little predictable but there are some bumps and turns along the way that might surprise you. All in all a very nice read.
I received a copy of Wrangled in exchange for an honest review.
Wrangled is the 6th book in the Whitehorse, MT: Chisholm Cattle Co series. You do not need to read the books before to follow this one.
Plot/storyline This was by far the strongest element of the book. I would say that this novel is more of a thriller/crime drama than it is a romance and that side of it was well executed. There is a lot going on in this, a lot of twists and turns but the author manages to keep up and tie all the loose ends together nicely. She also managed to keep me guessing. I find that a lot of these book are too obvious and that there are no surprises. Often the reader knows what is going on before the author wants them to, Wrangled managed to stay out of that trap.
Writing The writing was fine. I would have liked to see a bit more detail. The narrative jumps around a lot and I think to many characters have a voice here. At the beginning I found it confusing, all the jumping meant it took me a while to settle in.
The characters This was by far the worst part of the book. I found all the characters to be fairly one dimensional and lacking in individuality or personality. Zane has his moments were you think there is something there but Dakota offers nothing much at all.
Romance Because of the lack of personality the romance never seemed to get going either. It was a bit bland and unfortunately there was an appearance from the dreaded insta-love. The sex scenes left a lot to the imagination, they were reserved often fading to black.
Wrangled is full of good story telling but bland characters which is a real shame.
I picked this on up at in the used book section of a local non-profit store. I like B.J. Daniels books and had not read any of The Chisholm Cattle Company books. This is the last in the series and it is a nice finish. I liked Zack and Dakota. What I really liked about Dakota was the fact that she believed Zack even though the evidence was against him. The set up with Zack was just part of the mystery. Watching Zack and Dakota work against time to find the answers kept my attention.
Very good book. I liked Zane and Dakota. Their attraction to each other was pretty strong, and the danger they were going through only intensified it. When Zane is set up to make it look like he murdered Dakota's half sister, they work together to try to find out what is going on. Dakota is trying to find out if Courtney really is her sister, but she is missing and it looks suspicious. Zane's father's first wife, who was thought to be dead, is still missing but is still creating problems for the Chisholm family. I really liked the way that Zane and Dakota worked together on the mystery, but still had time to explore their attraction. I like the way that they are old friends who have moved up to something more. It's always nice when two people already know a lot about each other before giving in to the attraction. The final showdown was tense, and I couldn't put the book down until I was done.
Dakota Lansing and Zach Chisholm were neighbors. Dakota used to follow Zach around when she was younger. She idolized him even then. She was engaged for a time but couldn't marry anyone because her hurt always belonged to Zach, even though he didn't know. I couldn't put this book down. It had so much going on that it held my interest the entire time. When Dakota's half sister goes on a date with Zach alot of other things start to happen including she disappears. Dakota knows he didn't do anything and she tries to help him solve this mystery. Everything that happens as to clues to her sister's wereabouts points to Zach being guilty. You will love this story. There is a little profanity and a small amount of sex, but it will not deter you from this great story. B J never disappoints on her stories
In Daniels’ romantic suspense novel, Dakota Lansing loves living and working on a ranch believing life is never dull in the saddle. Zach Chisholm, cowboy and eye candy to the ladies, was someone always out of her reach. When family secrets begin to surface, Dakota is forced to confront Zach understanding that he is the only one who could help her stay alive. Targeted by unknown assailants, Zach and Dakota are forced to face the unexpected together as their family connections become bigger than either of them ever expected. Fighting the growing attraction between them, they race against time, matching courage for courage in a fire storm of a showdown.
B.J. Daniels continues to be the queen of romantic suspense.
I thought this was one of the best Chisholm books. The over-arching mystery is addressed and the situation of for the couple of the book is tied up with the bigger mystery. There is some closure to McCall's overarching story line as well, one that seems to have started in a previous series of books.
This is the final book in the Chisolm Cattle Co. (Brothers) Series. I loved the conclusion of the understory (the continual mystery linking all six books) as well as I liked Zane and Dakota. I must admit that I figured out the understory much earlier, it was still a good read.
Can't wait to find more by B.J. Daniels once I finish the neverending pile of to-reads!
Dakota Lansing had a crush on Zane Chisholm when she was a teenager, but Zane was old enough that he knew she was off limits. Now, Dakota has moved back to Whitehorse. They find that their attraction is stronger than ever. But first, they must find out why someone is trying to frame Zane for murder. Good story.
