Now I understand why some reviewers go on rants. The first book of the series started out with a reasonable premise, however the story had too many holes and inconsistencies. A museum get trashed, Tyr just disappears, Sal somehow is able to leave a locked museum with police on the way and dead bodies all around and not get arrested. HUH??? She just shows up at her apartment, no explanation she just arrives tired.
The second book was a disaster. In one scene it starts with Tyr on his horse and the next paragraph he was in the jeep. A jeep(with gas) they were able to obtain 300 years after all modern equipment was destroyed. They were also able to get more gas in a tiny rural village. Every challenge is handled with a trite convenient solution that somehow saves the moment. Arrgh! The constant "because I am a Deadblood" got tiresome.
Skip the series and save yourself some frustration.
This series is action packed with an imaginative storyline, and complex time traveling characters. Accordingly, societal norms change and the powerful beasts evolve throughout the story due to the human intent corrupting them. The blood “magic” used is far reaching and powerful, and many battles are fought with great losses along the way. Salista and Tyr are strong leads, as are the supporting characters. Note: there were many things in this series that didn’t seem plausible - like 500 year old (plus) bicycles still functional - in any way, etc. Still. An entertaining and enjoyable series! Note 2: The series wraps up nicely in LiveBlood. But then there’s another wrap up in “Blood Letting” which ends with a cliffhanger and there are no further books that I’m aware of. So my advice is to skip “Blood Letting”....
What's with all the "yah"? It was a bit off putting. I didn't check but I'm assuming there is a gap between the time of writing the first and the last books.... there is a significant change in writing style. I personally think the change in style is for the better but certainly the errors, mistyped and just plain missing words increased as well. The story line was good and kept me interested although I agree with a previous poster that the epilogue wasn't really an epilogue but more of a leaving the door ajar in case of a spin off.
It began as just another tired Regency, with a little dash of magic to throw a fake moustache's worth of paranormal to make it into a different category than the typical bodice ripper. Fortunately, after the worst beginning I've ever seen without the usual grammar and spelling errors, it got MUCH better. The one dimensional, toy soldier start was the only part of the whole collection that evoked the same cringe factor as being forced to watch a video of a kid butchering Chopin in their first recital, with no ready excuse for escape. Then, I guess the author decided to get invested in the story, because it went from flat and lifeless, to interesting and multi-faceted in a few pages. The hero that had less depth than an Andy Warhol piece of... "art" suddenly became less of a cliché snooze, and more of a flawed, introverted warrior with a chip on one shoulder, and an inferiority complex on the other. I'm glad I waded through the muck, because this collection is so much better than its clumsy start. I guess this book is the exception that proves the rule of needing to suck a reader in before the end of the first chapter. If I told a friend about it, I would tell them to skip the clumsy intro, and let the rest of the story shine.
I'm not generally a reader of the paranormal genre, however, this series has really changed my mind. As always, McCray's characters are very well developed, and the plot draws you right in. There is also a lot of action and plenty of suspense. It's definitely a page turner and a series you won't want to put down until you've completed it and, in my case at least, written your review at 3:00 in the morning! Great stuff, and five stars all the way!!!
The books were fantastic, just completely awesome. I had a hard time putting it down to go about everyday life. I loved everything about all the books. I would recommend these books to anybody and everybody. A total must read.
I have read the whole series in a few days. The characters pull you in & the story was filled with changes & excitement. The author definitely let her imagination fly. I would recommend this in a heart beat!
First I would like to say that I really did enjoy there books. A few too many "yahs" for me but the characters are great and the storyline, if not believable, was very entertaining!
