first impression of this book , another harry potter series. Well you cant ignore the similarities between the 2. ranging from non magic person entering the magic world. the magic game the weirdo friends the dark side of magic To me it was like reading harry potter once again.
I am not saying the book was bad. it is pretty decent book. good characters, nice plot. Love the character of HAWK , reminded me of Dumbledore.
the pace of the book was great, dint feel much dragged. Although the book dint reach the level of harry potter. I would still give it 4 stars.
Let me say that I'm a big fan of Ben Hale's books. They have all been tremendously entertaining, and Ben himself has responded to my reviews and is very nice and approachable. So, I'm inclined to like his stuff, and I was keeping an eye on his Facebook page to see when this book was going to be uploaded for purchase. That being said, I usually stay away from these types of magic-in-the-modern-age books, and had it been a book from an unknown author, I probably would have passed this by. So, those are my prejudices going in.
So, this book is set far after the events of the Second Draeken War, which was ended by Taryn and his sister Siarra. This book was hinted at by Hale in his last (chronologically) book, The List Unseen. I had assumed that this book was coming, and that it would be far flung into the future, as it is. However, I was surprised to find that the world of Lumineia had become our Earth. It's now the present age, and we find that the races have mixed and the mages driven into hiding. We also learn that there hasn't been an oracle for quite some time, though it's unclear why that is.
The first thing that struck me about this book was that it is VERY Harry Potter-esque. I wont go over all of the parallels, but they are extensive. I know that Harry Potter was not the first fantasy story to have a teenager be ripped from their normal life by the discovery of powers and prophesy, but it is certainly the best known, and unfortunately this book almost begs to be compared to it. The similarities go well beyond being a coming of age/coming into power story.
I was worried that this would become a tick for me that I wouldn't be able to get past, but I found myself focusing less on comparing and contrasting it to Harry Potter as I got further into the story. One of the things I've always enjoyed about Hale's writing is that his characters are very easy to relate to and I find myself emotionally invested in them. I was gratified to see a character that serves as a strong connection between this book and the Second Draeken War which helped ground the story in its roots and helped me get past the fact that this book is so far removed from the last trilogy. The action, as usual, was very well written. Another thing I love about Hale is that he has no problem writing powerful characters being powerful. One fight in particular when someone really lets loose was really exciting to read.
Also, the magic system is really fleshed out in this book. I think Ben got started on this in The List Unseen but really expanded our understanding of the magic in these books and how it works. Also, the mage world was well built, though, at times, it was difficult to really picture everything that he was describing. I found the fire practice floor to be pretty cool though.
I would recommend reading The List Unseen before this book as it contains some tidbits that will help make the motivations of a few characters a little clearer, one fire wielding mage in particular. And, while acknowledging my reservations, I would recommend this book. It was a fun read and I wish it had been longer, and the ending is quite the cliffhanger, which really whets the appetite for book 2.
Yes, yes, yes, it's a complete rip off of Harry Potter. Even so, Ben has done a great job world building and designing his magic system. I rolled my eyes at first but the story sucked me in and carried me along. I genuinely liked the few main characters, and the writing was pretty strong.
Dialogue among the main, modern characters sounded fairly natural, but the aspects of the story that leaned deeper into fantasy read over-the-top. The tone couldn't find a clear foothold and some of the plot was rushed.
All in all, it was a very fun, quick read. I'll be finishing the series soon.
I went into this book knowing it was a Harry Potter rip off. So my expectations were not that high. Yes there were a lot of similarities, and I almost stopped reading when I got to the part about their Magic sport they play. But I continued and finished the book. I agree with most reviews about it being very simular to Harry Potter. It is a shame that is the case. Because the couple of original ideas that Ben Hale had added to the story were overshadowed by all the copied ideas from H.P
This is a fairly entertaining book that's fun, well paced, has good characters, and is quite easy to get through.
The story and setting are very similar to Harry Potter. The protagonist learns that she has magical abilities and that there is a world of magic hidden from the "normal" world. She has to enroll in a magical school to learn about her powers while also having to deal with plots by a "secret" group of evil mages.
Although there's nothing that really stands out, the book is still quite enjoyable and competently written. However, there is one major flaw, the villains. They're rather poorly realized. They're often described by as powerful and mysterious but often come off as incompetent and idiotic.
Mild spoilers concerning the villains:
Despite those problems, I would still recommend it if you're looking for an entertaining fantasy that you can easily breeze through.

The Story set in the same line as "Harry Potter", Magic school, Competition & Game etc. But what is more interesting with this book is the lead female have an assassin as a bodyguard. Lots of actions. My favorite is the Techno Mage - wow. If you are into steampunk then you definitely will enjoy the series. Highly Recommend.
It's a decent read, it felt a little like a Harry Potter knock-off since it's a mage world unseen by muggles, I mean aruns. I did think the characters were pretty good. Other than Drake who is surprisingly reminisce of a certain Draco.
- Tried to force myself to finish the seris out of sunk cost fallacy. Even with my ocd, I couldn't justify buying the next one.
- This series is an attempt at modern Harry Potter, and it does not come into the same realm. I'm not being harsh. It's just so far beneath it in every single way.
- Almost every problem in the series is solved by the genius techie bff with a zillenial OCD screen addiction quirky personality.*
- Idk if I'd even recommend for young listeners.
Hale is clearly a dungeon master. Simple characters, simple plot, dialogue of varying quality, but some real talent for setting up and describing action scenes. I enjoyed his Luminaria series, with all its action, fantasy scenes, and DnD characters.
The plot and characters in this one? Not so much. Especially since I had just read Luminaria and was already sick of Hale's limited diction. The number of times the main character "cringed"... the number of times her lil boyfriend "gave his signature grin" 🤮 OMG, the number of times something was "cored". Such a weird obsession with that word.
Most of the characters are pretty one-dimensional, to go along with the unimaginative dialogue and word choice. The Scottish tech friend is the most obvious plot-device-in-human-form in history. [ ... ]* Pasting that at the top of the review.
The plot felt pretty all over the place. It's been maybe 6 months since I listened to it, and I had it on in the background, but I really don't remember much of the plot of this series. I do remember some of the action scenes, and some cool moments with magic, *some* out of the 4 😩 books I listened to.
This review is based on the Audible Audio version.
I was a bit sceptical about the idea of the Chronicles of Lumineia continuing in what is present day earth. I think I would have preferred a standard fantasy story as the continuation, that said I was impressed by the way that Hale has managed to create a good story despite the modern day setting. Having read a lot of the reviews about this book, there are a good many people claims it's a Harry Potter rip off simply because Tess gets sent to a magical school when she had previously had no idea of the magical world. Yes there are similarities but does that make every fantasy story that involves a quest (as most do) a Lord of the Rings rip off. My reading of it is that Hale is using the school setting as a way of providing Tess with the knowledge of the magical world without simply having Hawk download the information to her in a a monologue. Tess has to come to terms with being an Oracle and more importantly the last expected oracle who according to prophecy is going unite the magical and no magical worlds. As reads of 2nd Draken War series will have come to expect, Hale does a good job with his characters and action scenes and keeps the whole story moving along at a good pace. Looking forward to seeing how me manages to continue the story.
I wanted to explore this new world as much as Tess. I am so happy she got air and can fly. I want to fly,if I had magic that is what I would do. But unfortunately Tess has to learn quickly as things come to.
Not usually a fan of modern time books, but this one brings you to a place of magic, making It feel like it's in another time period. Plus, having already read a ton of Ben Hale books, makes me want to read them all regardless of the era! Lol
Very HP but also different enough. I only got distracted in the beginning comparing the two stories, but eventually it became its own and I cared less.
This was better than I was expecting. I usually don't care for modern day mixing with fantasy, but this pulled it off, excellently. I'm looking forward to starting the 2nd book in the series.
Harry Potter inspired but lacking some of the literary magic of the original. It's kind of hard not to compare the two, so my opinion on this series suffers accordingly.
I really liked this one, but for some reason editors missed that 15, not 13 colors went into making the white light in the council chambers. Really? Why make such a huge deal about having 13 magics then blow it so spectacularly at the crucial point? Even with this major error, and the Harry Potter knockoff story, I still found it to be an excellent read, and enjoyed it very much.
I so enjoyed the Harry Potter books I have hunted for other books that may be similar. This one was one that I grabbed after a few disappointing books. The story follows a girl as she is found to have magic, and is sent to a school to help her learn her magic. Meanwhile there are people out to kill her so she will not fulfill a prophesy. There are many similarities with Harry Potter; someone under threat, a magical sport, a magical school. However in thinking about it there are few ways to tell that part of the story and be unique. You may find yourself in the middle of a number of comparisons as you are reading it. Yet the magic is different, the heroine is different. There are so many good and interesting characters in the books I have been pleased. I have also been very interested in what happens in the next chapter, then the next. Few books have dragged me in like this has. The one flaw? It is inherent in the way it was published. It was self published. It is found in many places, and on audible (the White Mage Saga). However the book could be tighter, some cleaning up could be done. The author spends some time on characters that are minor, yet should spend a bit more time fleshing out the important characters. It is so well writing, but a few of those hiccups pulled me from the story as I went on. For example the parents are very important to the book (well future books), and to the main character, yet I think they could spend more time developing that relationship. Some of the relationships with friends are skimmed over. For all those flaws, they are really enjoyable. It is no Harry Potter, however you can sit and enjoy them. I would guess that most youth will walk away enjoying these very much (assuming they like fantasy) I gave it four stars, and I think the Author just missed out. However unlike many of my books, I will be hanging on to it to read it a few times.

my review: This Young adult fantasy book reminded me a bit of the Harry Potter series at the start, but as the story continued I found myself less reminded of the Harry Potter books and was drawn into the story and enjoyed it tremendously. I was afraid I wouldn't be able to empathize with the main character as she was a 15 year old girl. I like a strong female leading character and was worried this one would resemble others in that age group and end up being too whinny for my taste. I'm am happy to say that didn't happen in this book at all. With that being said she (the main character) didn't become some all knowing hero right off the bat either. I absolutely adored some of the other characters of this book. All in all his characters are easy to relate to and well rounded. I think his writing is very entertaining. This is the first book by Ben Hale that I've read and would recommend it to anyone that likes action and magical adventures. I will most definitely be reading more of Mr. Hale's books.
The Last Oracle is the type of book that you start reading, and you can't believe that you hadn't read it before. The next thing that you know you are sitting up late at night reading, skipping dinner and truly regretting that you took a job because it seriously hinders your ability to read more. Not that this is what happened to me.... *It totally did* Tess is a strong and yet vulnerable character that will endure many things beyond her years. Tess is about to turn 16 and she really just doesn't seem to fit in. Then one day, she meets Hawk... and things for her.... change! A new school, a new life, and new powers? Yes that's right, POWERS!! The story line is fast passed but not so much that you fall behind. The word building in Hale's book is flawless, drawing you into the world and story like none I have read before! The story has some mild violence in it, and I suggest this read for teen and up because of this. I loved it!
Very dynamic and interesting read. I would Categorize this under young adult and warn anyone who finds derivative works annoying to avoid the book.
The book reads as a female harry potter book series based in modern USA. I found myself drawing thousands of comparisons between this book and the others in the series, but though annoyed at the similarities I loved the feeling of reading more books within the vein of Harry Potter.
Overall I recommend these books and found them highly enjoyable.
Ben Hale has a unique and impressive mind! He's a natural world-builder with a complete playground open for readers to appreciate. I've never seen someone approach magic in a way that I've never seen before, and this blew me off my feet. His characters are rich and strong, and the story is a real page-turner. I bought the sequel within minutes of finishing!
This book follows the classic fantasy pattern: kid discovers she has magical powers and is invited to a secret magic school. Oh, and her parents aren't her real parents, plus, she turns out to be the prophesied one. :) So, nothing groundbreaking there. But the details are really creative and the specifics of the plot have great surprises. And it's written really well.
I randomly chose this book so I would have something in vacation.... It's an easy read.... Nothing fabulous. I'm sure it's young adult.... But I have been out of the book world for so long I just figured I would give t a shot. Seems like there are some recognizable scenarios from other books in it.
Great story. Characters were realistic and the magic seemed possible. It had parallels to Harry Potter, which bugged me a little. The imagination of the author was amazing. I immediately downloaded the second book.
