So glad that I finally dove back into this series. I'll admit that it took me forever and a day to get back into this but that's because I kept forgetting about or I was distracted by hot man covers.

Dangerous Depths had a pretty slow start. I almost fell asleep reading it but it eventually picked up. The girls in this book were okay but were whiny at times which kind of annoyed me. Mostly because of that one book where the two main characters were whiny as fuck but in the end, I ended up liking these girls a lot better.

Now this book is the second in The Sea Monster Memoirs series. I liked how it was a bit darker than the first book but I also really liked getting to know the girls a bit more. Nixie is pretty interesting and I also liked the siren sisters. I'm just a big confused how one girl was the whiny and annoying one in the first book and now there's a different girl being that annoying little prick. Does this mean that the third book will have another girl annoying me? I really hope not.

Other than that, I liked the book. Rowan and Vienna's love was amazing to read about. Nixie becoming a favorite of mine was mind-blowing and probably the only reason why I kept reading. Overall, I'm a bit hesitant to dive into the third book but I probably will try it.

Let me start by saying that I absolutely loved the first book in this series Tangled Tides. There were times it seemed almost impossible to put down. In my opinion I guess you could say it was a pretty tough act to follow for the second book in the series. So going in it had it’s work cut out. But let me make clear that in no way am I saying this book wasn’t good because it was, it just wasn’t quite as awesome as the first, but still pretty great. I guess I will start by telling you guys the many reasons why I enjoyed this book. To me this story tries and succeeds to relay to it’s readers a message that even the impossible can be accomplished with faith and love. It shows just how deep the ties that bind us to one another can run and just what some are willing to do for those they love. That you can literally make it through Hell as long as you have one another. It doesn’t hurt that it takes us on a journey through a magical type of hell filled with demon look alikes, krakens, and soul sucking sea creatures. It definitely keeps things interesting!! Also I loved the fact that this novel gave us more background on some of the other characters such as Nixie and the siren sisters. I came to really like Nixie in this part of the story. The author showed a side that we didn’t get to see of her in the first part and I am so glad she did! Now with that being said I think the one thing that I really didn’t like about this one was the way Yara was portrayed in some parts. From very early on I found myself not liking her as much as I had in Tangled Tides. I can’t really pin point the exact reasons behind feeling this way I just did. That was really the only thing that turned me off about this story. The portrayl of Rowan and Vienna’s everlasting love is the type of love we all hope to expierence one day and the friendship between Yara and Nixie shows us what true friendship is suppose to look like. Overall this was a wonderful addition to The Sea Monster Memoirs and I can’t wait to continue the adventures with the beloved sea creatures of Rathe!

I am really enjoying this series. Although the females tend to have some whiny moments. Last time it was Yara, this time Nixie. But wow I really do like her character overall. I at least understand yet laments to an extent. This one is so much darker than the last book. I love how Harte worked. But never would want to go there haha. It messes with you big time!! Even as a reader, I wondered what to trust!

The biggest drawback to this was that it was a very slow start. I appreciate trying to give us a chance to see Rathe but I just wanted to get into the thick of things. Still, I really enjoyed this book.

My Thoughts: Karen Amanda Hooper does something amazing. She writes romance stories that I actually enjoy. This particular book is less about the romance and more about the action, about going to Harte (pronounced “Har-tay”) to try to save Vienna, Rownan's wife, who—in desperation—traveled there 16 years ago trying to return to the Earth realm to be reunited with Rownan. A good part of the book is also about Yara learning about her new abilities and how to use them, as well as deepening the ties between her and Treygan.

At any rate, this is a highly enjoyable story. While the first one was definitely YA, this one is starting to move a bit more toward younger NA readers, but I think readers of all ages will enjoy this story. If you enjoy magical, romantic stories, definitely check this one out.

How anyone has not read Tangled Tides is beyond me. Now with Dangerous Depths sitting finished beside me I am baffled why any one person would not be doing everything within their power to get their hands on it. Karen Hooper is a master at creating well developed characters, fascinating worlds and books that you just do not want to put down. There are people that take several books to develop a character and perfect it but Karen Hooper has it down with the first book and then just pushes her characters beyond in everything after. Reading Dangerous Depths was like revisiting a place that I had missed for far too long and yet you know it because the beauty of it all never changes. I am once again blown away by just how beautiful Karen Hooper's writing is. Dangerous Depths is every bit as amazing as Tangled Tides with a little more heart pulling moments added in for good measure. There was not a single moment that I was not hooked, flipping the pages to see how my favourite characters were going to pull off the impossible... again.

Where Tangled Tides gave you an idea of just how far everyone would go to protect the ones they love, Dangerous Depths shows you there is no measure of the distance they are willing to go. The story this time around took us to a not so beautiful land. The world was once again masterfully crafted and unique. Though there is magic, it is not beautiful and enchanting as it was before. No, this place makes you question absolutely everything that is going on and is what many would consider hell. In the quest to find Rowan’s love the trio will questioning everything that they see and do. I was often thrown from here to there or left screaming at a character that something wasn't real, to open their eyes. I would not say it was something that had terrifying creatures from my worst nightmare but for those that had to live it, I have no doubt that it was terrifying. The journey from start to finish with this one was more trying than Tangled Tides and possibly a little more emotional but it was every bit the book. There was no down time that had me board, in fact I may have stayed up late just to finish!

Yara and Treygan are still the amazing couple from the last book. There was no guessing that they were a couple or if they would finish the way they started. I would be a liar if I said that they were not tested in this novel because they were. The difference is that they were able to remain strong for each other and have a much better understanding of their relationship and who they are to each other. Yara is still the strong, self-determined and loving girl that she was before but she has much more power now. She is still learning about just how much she has and though Medusa’s sisters do not show her any respect she has no problem holding her ground. I would say that she did have growth but seeing she was already well developed and handles most things extremely well she didn't really need to, to be amazing. Yara remains to be one of my top book kick ass chicks and is loyal almost to a fault. With Treygan in this one he was every bit the Merman I remembered and then some. He is so freaking sweet and some of the small things he did continued to make me swoon. I loved that there was just love between these two now and though they are together, they do not let it change who they are.

Rownan is really the game changer in this one. I can not say that I disliked the guy but he was not my favourite person. At the end of Tangled Tides I had a general understanding of his plotting and reasoning but you never really got the depth of it all. It is obvious that Vienna and him have a love that rivals that of any you have heard before. They take soul mates to an entirely new level and as much as I love Yara and Treygan and their relationship, it basically blows them away. Yes, it is that strong of a bond and I began to feel a little more for this stubborn Selkie. There is no sacrifice too small or too large when it comes to getting Vienna back. For me Rownan because a character, not the bad guy in this one. Though some of his decisions may have been rash and questionable, his intentions were always more than honourable. Treygan may be my favourite but I would never deny that there is now a place in my heart for Rownan as well.

Someone that we also got a glimpse into was Nixie. To be honest I had never really given her much consideration before now and I regret that. Hooper has given this secondary much more depth than I had ever imagined possible. She is more than Yara's Siren. Nixie misses who she was, loves the happiness that being around her family brings and only wishes she were more useful when it comes to Yara. Her need to be needed and the fact that she often did not feel as though she were a part of everything kind of tore at me. What awaited her at the end basically ripped me apart. I would love to go into her more but I honestly feel that unless you pick up this book you could never really grasp the depth and ache that has become a part of this character.

Sometimes second books suffer and do not quite become as great as the first or the ones that come after them but I would have to say Dangerous Depths is equal to its predecessor. With its easily flowing writing, stunning characters and addictive plot I will revisit this one just as persistently as the first. There were times that I found myself hoping that what was going on was an illusion and for the most part it was… Except for one horrifying time. However, that is neither here nor there and you will need to read this amazing book to figure it out yourself. If you have not yet started the Monster Memoir Series you need to!! Karen Hooper will easily capture your attention, imagination and heart with her stunning books. This is one of the best Mermaid series out there and a must have for anyone that loves reading!!

Review:

Dangerous Depths is a book full of mythology, monsters, sea creatures, incredible worlds and adventures, that plunges you right into Yara's new story.
Once again, Karen Amanda Hooper tell us another of her unforgettable sea monsters stories, without losing its essence, and creating a magical world under water where every mythological story and every magical creature seems to be alive. And this time with a scary and dangerous journey in which our favorite monsters may not return alive. Making this book a page-turner.
In this book, Ms. Hooper puts other characters, aside from Yara, in the spotlight. We get to read the point of view of a tortured and wild Rownan, who has the only intention to bring her lover back from the sea hell known as Harte. You see a different Rownan from the first book and his desperation for saving Vienna gets to irrational levels. If you didn't like him in the first book, because of all the lying to Yara, in this book you are unable to not have some sort of feelings for him. And good ones!
Then we get to read Nixie's point of view, Yara's siren. She has a really good heart and you start to look at her like a great and friendly character. You also read her story, her real family and her true character, and for that, we have to thank Karen, because we know like Nixie. She's brave, intelligent and yearns affection. There's only one more thing to say to the author: Why?! *insert desperation mode here*. When you read the second book in The Sea Monsters Memoirs you will understand me.
Overall the story has strong characters and some of them have changed, they are more mature and more determined to do the right thing, or, other, commit suicide in order to safe s soulmate. We also meet new adorable characters and some scary ones that you won't be able to forget.
The plot was simple heartfelt, incredible and simply amazing. Treygan and Yara help Rownan bring his wife, Vienna, from Harte and in the middle of this suicidal mission you found out more things about these three and also about Nixie. So far we have some mythological touch in the story (Medusa and her sea world), evil gorgon sisters, a mean character that now we love, a suicidal mission, someone to rescue, three sea monsters, one scary place: Harte and one wrenching and heart-stopping ending.
I also have to mention Harte. It's a scary, unpredictable and unpleasant place, but the author has the ability to keep the characters on edge and also with a dose of humor. What I really liked about this place (not that I would want to go) is when Yara, Treygan and Rownan first jump and find themselves in a sort of hell-limbo. I couldn't stop imagining it and it was a great scene to include in this adventure.
The romance between Treygan and Yara's still happening in this story, even more cheesy than before (all in a good/amazing way). They scenes before entering Harte were one of my favorites, specially the one where only gorgons can enter *wink* (You'll see). Their love is more strong now and they show they are affection for one another which makes the readers be in a swoony state.
To this romantic equation we have to add one more couple: Rownan and Vienna. He's willing to enter hell to save her. There's no need to say more, Book Addicts. Like Yara and Treygan's their love is an epic one and we are glad we had the chance to read about these two.
To sum up, this book is definitely in my favorite books shelf. It has everything I love: mythology, a fantastical and magical sea world, Karen Amanda Hooper's version of mermaids and sea monsters, romance and adventure. The characters not only put their lives in risk, but their souls, which is pretty scary and makes this story exciting. Because of all that, I'm highly recommending it and giving this book five of our gorjuss dolls.
If you enjoyed, adored, liked and/or loved the first book, you will be unable to stop reading this one once you have started, Book Addicts! So you have to read it! And we will definitely wait for more Sea Monsters Memoirs books in the meantime!

This was a crazy wild ride into Hell. Literally that is where they went to save Rowans true love who went there to find a way to get to Rowan when the gate to their world was closed. She has been stuck there for 16 years and they have to go and get her out. It is a story about facing your greatest fears and being able to tell the difference between reality and deception and how your mind can be fooled. I loved the love story between Rowan and Vienna and how they couldn't live without each other. It was also fun to see Treygan and Yarra together and see their love grow into this great thing holding them together and to reality. Nixie's personality really came through in this story too. You got to see how she became a siren and why she is such a good person. I must admit the ending is rather sad and it made me cry. It is very well written and would recommend it to anyone who likes stories about Mermaids, Selkies, and other sea creatures. There is even a sexy sexy Kracken! Yes, I said Kracken. Hehehehe.

What I Liked:

You all must know by know that I am a huge fan of Karen and her books. She's a Baltimore native, her books are amazing, the covers are gorgeous, and she's super fantastic. What's not to love?! Well, congratulations on your fourth AMAZING release, Karen! It's sad that this is the first novel of hers that I am reviewing, but I've read the others, and I love them. Tangled Tides is my favorite, but this sequel did not disappoint. If anything, this sequel is almost as fabulous!

One of the brilliant things about this book is that you don't really have to remember much from the first book to read the second one. I didn't really have a hard time getting back into Yara and Treygan's world. Hooper doesn't really recap events of the first book all at once in the beginning, like most authors do with sequels. Rather, she lets information flow gently into the book, naturally, so it never feels like there is an info-dump anywhere. But, it's clear enough that you recall major events from book one. This is important to me, because I didn't re-read book one before reading this one.

Anyway. Rownan, Treygan's brother is determined to get his wife back. Vienna is stuck in a hellish place called Harte - and yes, it is literally hell. Yara, Treygan, and Rownan set out to find this impossible and terrible place, bring Vienna back, and somehow, do all of this without losing their minds, or worse, their lives.

Such an interesting premise. Definitely not a what I was expecting, when the synopsis was first revealed, but I was intrigued nonetheless. I was expecting something more related to the overall plot with Yara and her strange being, but I was pleasantly surprised to find that while going to Harte did not have to do with Yara and her role in the general plot specifically, it did have much to do with the general plot of the series. This is good, because sequels are the books that step into the overarching plot of the series. In the first book of a trilogy, the protagonist gets a taste of the different, unique life into which he/she has been thrown. In the last book of a trilogy, the final showdown takes place. So, bravo to Hooper on that aspect - subtly keeping to the grand scheme of things!

Yara and Treygan are not quite at the forefront of this novel. I was surprised to find that this book was written with not one but three first-person perspectives - Yara's, Rownan's, and Nixie's. All three perspectives are very important, and I think it will be interesting to see how each character plays a role in the final book. With the exception of one. No spoiler.

While Yara and Treygan are not at the front and center of this book, they are still very, very important. Their relationship grows beautifully, just as the relationship between the two protagonists should, in a sequel. I love that no love triangle has been introduced - sort of. I have a hard time believing in anyone but Treygan and Yara.

The plot is so bendy and twisty! At times, it dragged a little, but I found that for the most part, I was flipping through this book, wanting to know what would happen next. Most of the book takes place in Harte. A good way to think of Harte is Davy Jones' Locker (if you've seen Pirates of the Caribbean). That is exactly what I thought of, every time Hooper described a part of Harte.

On that note, the imagery is SUPERB in this book. The descriptions of everything is so beautiful and captivating. Even those of Harte, of the nasty, haunting place, had its on luster. Hooper has a way of describing things - you can really picture it in your mind.

Suffice it to say, I really enjoyed this book!

What I Did Not Like:

I mentioned this before, but I found that the plot dragged at times. The beginning definitely is slow. It took me about 30% to really start getting into the story, and about then, the team entered Harte. So, if you're having trouble starting and finishing this book, fret not, because it does have a slow beginning.

Would I Recommend It:

YES! I most certainly would! If you loved book one, you'll love book two. If you're contemplating reading this series, do it. The first book, and the sequel, are FANTASTIC. And if you didn't like book one... try again. You might find that this series is quite epic.

After I read Tangled Tides, I felt like that was it, like there was no need for a sequel. My main motivations might have been that Treygan and Yara had their happy lives now, and I didn't want that to be ruined. I didn't care for Rownan one bit as much as he had redeemed himself in the end. In this book everyone is happy as they can be in Rathe after 18 years on Earth when the gate was closed. Yara is part of the gorgon sister's trio, both her and Treygan are together with no impending doom (*squeals*), but not everyone is as happy. Rownan is met with the terrible truth that Vienna, the love of his life, had gone to Harte in search for another entrance for Earth to be with him. Not a single soul that enters Harte, literally hell, has ever gotten out. Nothing can come in the way of this selkie to be reunited with his wife, and Treygan and Yara won't let him go alone to his impending doom. Together through thick, thin and hell.

I'll be honest. I didn't like the book the first 30% because the narrative was a bit slower than what I'm used to of Karen Hooper. I also didn't like Yara. I felt her to be incredibly stupid and foolish to what she was planning to do, even if it was for love. I guess I have a heart of stone in some things... Even with these things I continued to read and boy was I met with something...

Nevermind those chapters at the beginning. It was all for show, we could say, a preparation for the big bomb to fall and break everything into havoc. In this book we are met with a whole new thing from Tangled Tides. It's like taking what we had and amplifying it into something bigger. There's more romance, action, prospect of eternal doom and damnation, more romance from Treygan and Yara... It was all a perfect combination for a sequel.

The plot was rich into keeping you intrigued and guessing what is going to happen next. Once the golden trio makes it to Harte it's all action after action after action. I loved how the tiny pieces got together in the end making much more sense. Anything you thought was unimportant is actually important at some point. There was also great character development in this book too. When I started this book and saw the different POV's (Yara, Rownan, and Nixie) I started to complain because I wanted to know things with Yara only, and Treygan was always welcomed. But then it makes sense to add them since the name of the series is The Sea Monster Memoirs. Might feel boring at first, trust me I got all those thoughts running through my mind at some point, but it's worth it. Each character here is so unique, it doesn't matter what perspective you're on because it just adds more flavor to the narrating of the same events, just with different thoughts and reasons. It also gives space to personal development of each character, which is great, like always <3

Now that I got through all the basic stuff I should add in a review, I shall take time to appreciate first, Nixie, a greatly funny, unselfish, spirited, and utterly amazing Siren/ex-sprite. To Rownan, because even with his depressing thoughts I got to know him better and empathize with him, and at the end actually like him. To the all-so-amazing sprites Jenna and Keeley, who made me squeal in delight and laugh out loud with their cuteness and bravery.

And the most important, Treygan and Yara!

Dear Karen, why do you make me suffer with these two? With this utterly and swoony couple that just make me smile like an idiot each time I read of them, who make me sigh in contempt, and want to steal Treygan all to myself... Why why why?! Here in Dangerous Depths, Oh My Time Lord, there really is a lot of romance. And it's more steamy! :O It made me think of how in another book of Karen's, Taking Back Forever, the romance was more mature content and oh so enjoyable to read. This book doesn't disappoint IN THE LEAST in these aspects.

And speaking of Karen's other series, was I glad I wasn't  met with a heartbreaking and mind-blowing cliffhanger like in Taking Back Forever. I was scared of reading the last chapter in fear that I'd be met with that AGAIN. Karen took someone's advice in killing her darlings, and I did not want to end this book with something to keep my mind busy for another year. I wasn't, so YAY! The end was amazing, as the rest of the book. This book, in addition to Tangled Tides, are definitely worth it. It's a fast and understandable read, quite easy for me since Karen has a great way of using words to flow easy and fill your head with perfect images. Another great book by one of my favorite authors <3

Just when Yara and Traygan thought they would get their happy ending, they're forced in to a dangerous misson to Harte, the sea creatures version of Hell. Rownan has discovered that his wife Vienna did not wait for him, and after two years seperated she ventured in to Harte to try and get to him in the human world, but she's been trapped for 16 years. Rownan will do anything to get back to her, including going after her there, and Yara and Treygan won't let him go alone. But once they get there, nothing is as it seems and with the time frame to get out and get home swiftly closing, they don't have long to overcome the obstacles in their way. Will they find Vienna? Will they get out safely? And who will die for the cause?

Picking up merely days after Tangled Tides ended, we're thrown right in to the action. If you haven't read Tangled Tides you must read it before this to know a few things otherwise you'll just get confused.

Yara has developed more powers than was expected and she's finally happy with Treygan but of course they vow to help Rownan, so we don't spend much time in Rathe, but we do see some old faces from the previous book. I was particularly impressed with Nixie and her character development, she's a fiercely loyal friend to Yara and quite selfless in the end.

The world building in Dangerous Depths continues to be as amazing as it was in Tangled Tides, along with the prose that had you laughing one minute and hysterically crying the next.

Dangerous Depths is fast paced throughout, and there's never a dull moment between the hallucinations, Kraken, sprites and other assorted creepy creatures. That's right...there's a Kraken...but forget the Pirates Of The Caribbean Kraken, this one's so much better!

Dangerous Depths will grip you from beginning until the nail biting and heartbreaking conclusion. It was impossible to put down and it's firmly in the category of books I breezed through in a couple of hours, and then cursed myself for being a fast reader.

My only issue is Rownan. Now, before I get shouted down, hear me out. I get Vienna is his wife, and I get that they have this really strong and powerful love, believe me I do, I also get that Yara and Treygan went with him of their own free will, but Rownan should have known they'd find out and come with him. My issue is that I already disliked his character from the previous book, and I loved Nixie and Yara and Treygan a lot more than him. So I couldn't help but get gradually more and more irritated by him and his incredible selfishness. Someone died for him to be with Vienna, and while that was her own choice too, I just really can't stand his character. It was all incredibly selfish of him, and a much loved character died for it. I'm probably in the minority if not the only one who felt like this but I just can't with his character.

Quite frequently I've found second books just don't measure up to the first and go swiftly downhill, but this is not one of them. The standard was continued, more interesting tidbits where fed to us, and the characters continued to jump off the page at you. I even felt for the other two Siren sisters, especially as one of them's previous history was brought to our attention.

You need to read this series. Seriously. Yes I know there's loads of mermaid books out there, but I guarantee there isn't one quite like Tangled Tides and Dangerous Depths. Dangerous Depths continued to be a totally unique take on the subject matter, and continued to weave the magic of the previous book.

Fast paced, nail biting, funny and heartbreaking all in one, you can't really ask for more from a book can you? While everything, as far as I could tell, was wrapped up quite nicely, I'm eager for the third book, not only to dive in to this world again, but to see what else Karen has up her sleeve!

When I first started this book, I was prepared to not like it. I was perfectly content with how Tangled Tides ended and Treygan & Yara’s happy ending. I didn’t want anything or anyone to get in the way of that. Then I realized, that Rownan didn’t have his happy ending. I normally would’ve just said, “screw him” but Rownan had really redeemed himself for me in Tangled Tides, so I wanted to see if this book would make me fall in love with the world all over again. And surprisingly, it did. I fell right back in to the wonderful world of mermaids and selkies and gorgons and sirens and pixies and krakens, and… well you get the point. Rathe was just as beautiful and wonderful and magical as I imagined it would be, and it makes Earth seem so… dull in comparison.

This book reads easily without the need to read the first one. It helps you recap the important parts of the first book and easily introduces you to this one. Each book can stand on their own, but it’s nice to read them together.

This story is told in the POV’s of Yara, Nixie, and Rownan. I missed Treygan’s POV the most because his POV was my favorite one in Tangled Tides. Especially considering that Treygan’s swoon-meter was off the charts in this one :D.

Nevertheless, being introduced to Nixie was great because she was such a refreshing character! We were basically being introduced to the “antagonist” of the story, and realizing that she wasn’t actually an antagonist.

I loved how this story had character development all around: from Nixie, to Rownan, to Yara, everyone seemed to mature and develop much more in this book. We see a whole new romantic and wonderful side from Rownan ( a little sappy, too ;D).

This side of Rownan is so determined! His love is what makes him go to the ends of the Earth in search of his true love, Vienna.

I loved the romance in this book! It was so much more… mature (in other words: STEAMY ;)) than in the first book, and that didn’t stop me from loving it! Treygan & Yara can finally be together without anyone or anything getting in their way, and Rownan & Vienna have to fight to be together! Even if Rownan & Vienna had been together for years, it felt like they were falling in love again for me. It was so sweet!

I also really enjoyed the conflict in this book much more than in the first one. I loved how the conflict here was that they had to go to Harte, a place very similar to hell. I loved how Harte was set up; full of mystery and mischief.



The only aspect that I didn’t enjoy much was that it was a bit slow at the beginning. I again disliked Yara for some strange reason, but that changed quickly as I kept reading.

Overall, a great addition to the series that re-introduces us to the wonderful world of mermaids and shows us how powerful love really is.

Hell hath no fury like a selkie separated from his true love.

The gate to the sea creature realm is finally open. Yara wants to bask in the glow of her budding relationship with Treygan and explore Medusa’s world, but as the new leader of Rathe her powers are needed to save a sea creature she’s never met.

Rownan assumes the worst is behind him when he returns home to be reunited with his wife, Vienna, only to discover she’s gone. She traveled to the evil realm of Harte to find another gateway to Earth and was never heard from again. Rownan claimed he would go through hell to be with her, and now he must prove it.

Rownan, Yara, and Treygan will put their lives and souls at risk by traveling to the most dangerous realm of all. Love is supposed to conquer all, but no one has ever conquered Harte.

Dangerous Depths is one of those sequels that totally was above expectations. I had read Tangled Tides a while ago, and while I liked the book and the whole new creatures, mythology and the romance but I attributed it to the whole novelty of the series. First books set the bar, but it's the sequels that really determine how good a series is and Dangerous Depths really proved that this series is awesome. We have Rathe, a whole other realm exclusively for mermaids, selkies, gorgons, water sprites and what not - a realm we only had heard about in Tangled Tides, but here we see it from Yara's eyes and man, do I wish I could go there. But that wasn't really the highlight of the book! It was Harte - where nothing is really as it seems. It totally plays with your mind, making you question what is real and what is not. It's like Hell and Inception went and had a baby and called it Harte. Excellent construction of the two realms, I say!

Plot-wise, this book makes the whole story of Tangled Tides pale in comparison. Who doesn't love an rescue/adventure in a hellish realm where there are amazingly hot kraken? *wink* Seriously though, the entire journey they had through the books was so well-written and so well-paced. Hooper really plays with your mind and with the addition of an extra perspective in the form of Nixie, keeps things engaging and interesting. I was even rooting for Rownan this time around, when I hated him in the last book. Two epic love stories - god, that just is too many feelings to handle for me. The romance between the characters isn't really as much to speak about as the characters, themselves, though. They are beyond loveable, and I include all the characters in this, even the bitchy gorgons and the reluctant sirens. I adored Nixie and she really gave that much-needed attitude that was lacking since Pango wasn't around as much. Also, while the previous book was focused on the doomed romance, this one went for the forever-kin-of-love without making it cheesy.

The ending really had me tearing into my fingernails. Yes, Dangerous Depths, thanks to you, my nails are back to stubs. How am I supposed to get rid of that nasty habit if I keep finding exciting books like this? On a serious note, that ending was handled really well - I was so afraid and nervous and was in despair about whom we might lose because let's face it - a really good book will kill off at least one character. Overall, it was a fantastic book and goodness, I am already excited for Sacred Seas.

After I had finished Tangled Tides, I was so sad because I wasn't sure when the next book in this amazing series would be out. I was absolutely thrilled when Karen actually visited my first review, so I emailed her asking how I could be involved with the promoting of her second book Dangerous depths. Karen kindly directed me in the direction of Enticing Journey Book Promotions and I was just in time to sign up for DD! I was extremely excited about this book and it did no disappoint. Karen captured the captivating essence she created in Tangled Tides and drew me back into the Seam Monster Memoirs world quickly.

Once again I love the fact that the names are included in the chapter headings, as the POV changes throughout the story. It makes following the story so much easier. This time around we lived the story through Yara, Rownan and Nixie.

Three words: Exciting, captivating, suspenseful

Characters: 5/5
Karen definitely creates well rounded and lovable characters. I connected with every character easily, and I was drawn into their story quickly.

Yara - Yara has definitely grown as a character and is tested on so many levels throughout the book. I did miss Treygan's POV, but luckily we do get a good dose through Yara. I definitely grew to love Yara even more in this book.

Treygan - Although there wasn't a POV for Treygan, he does play a huge part in the story. I was so happy to see Treygan's happy and lovable side. His love for Yara is beautiful and strong. Rownan is lucky to have a loyal brother like him. Hopefully Treygan's POV will come back in Book 3.

Rownan - I was so happy to see a different side of Rownan in this book. A wonderful husband that would go to hell and back for the woman he loves - literally. I can only admire his persistence and devotion to Vienna. Karen really does have you rooting for a happy ending all round throughout the book - but you are never sure what will happen next!

Nixie - Nixie was my favourite character in the book. I also want a siren like Nixie! I loved her and was so excited every time her POV came round. Loyal, loving and a beautiful soul filled with light, adding in a little spice and fire. My heart ached for her and all I wanted to do was climb into the book and comfort or help her. She was so brave and I really hope to see more of her one way or another in the next book.

Jenna & Keeley - I had to add these two brave little sprites into my review. They proved that its not size that matter, but what is in your heart and soul. I adored these 2 beautiful characters.

Plot, Pace, Writing style, World Building: 4/5
Karen has a beautiful writing style that draws you into her world. The pace is a little bit slower in the first 3rd of the book but it was not uneventful. The plot keeps you guess and glued to the book. The world building is awesome and is painted beautifully.

Cover talk 5/5: I love the first cover, I loved this cover and I'm pretty sure I will love the next cover. I am so contacting her cover designer when I need a cover for my book! The cover of the first book drew me to the story and the second cover did not disappoint.

Author note: Karen is amazing and so friendly. She has always made time to reply to my emails or tweets. She makes times for her fans and readers, and that is a beautiful quality. Thank you Karen for writing this amazing series.

The above quote would have to be the motto of Dangerous Depths. Every single character in this novel is more than willing to risk everything to keep the ones they love safe from harm. Rownan returns to Rathe, only to find that his true love, Vienna, risked her life to try and find him, by going through Harte, the sea monster version of hell. Literally. Desperate to save her, against the advice of all who know him, Rownan decides to enter Harte in order to save Vienna. And, of course, Yara and Treygan follow him. And thus begins a story of what a person is willing to do to save the ones that mean the most.

The love between the characters of this book is astounding. Not only between couples, but between family, and friends. And the way Hooper writes this love is so incredibly believable. I believe that these people are willing to risk everything they have, everything they are, to save the ones they love.

Rownan. My opinion of Rownan increased exponentially from Tangled Tides. His love for Vienna was so heartbreaking, and the way he describes her, and their love in his chapters are the stuff of dreams. From the moment you realise what he has to do, what he has to risk to save Vienna, you are behind him 100 percent. The entire time I was reading Dangerous Depths, I was begging Medusa and Poseidon to let him have his happy ending. Did they grant me my wish? Ah, dear readers, you will have to read this amazing novel to find out.

As with Tangled Tides, Dangerous Depths saw Yara grow as a character. In the beginning I was worried that she might let her newfound powers and abilities change who she is; but as the story went on, I realised that she was just adjusting. And she had a lot to adjust to. But, she comes out triumphant in the end, and her character is even more amazing than previously thought.

The love between Yara and Treygan is the stuff of fairytales. One really long fairytale wrought with danger, and deception, and all kinds of nasty stuff. But, keeping true to the essence of fairytales, their love is greater than all of that. They are the kind of couple you can believe in, and you can really get behind.

I must say that I missed Treygan’s chapters, but the new voice of Nixie introduced new characters, and feelings. I absolutely adored Nixie’s sprite friends, Jenna and Keeley. They are the most adorable characters I have had the pleasure of reading about in a long time. Such brave little souls in such tiny little bodies.

Overall, Dangerous Depths is a marvellous sequel to Tangled Tides; introducing new characters, and new stories to keep you hooked until the very end. I am in love with every aspect of the world that Hooper has created, and I cannot wait to read more.

A tale filled with adventure, magic, and the power of love, Dangerous Depths will leave you enchanted.

Dangerous Depths is the 2nd book in the Sea Monsters Memoirs Series. This book was much more than what I expected. At first, I thought it was going to be about Yara and Treygan and wondered what Karen could do to beat all the struggles they had to face in Tangled Tides. That is when she added Harte and Rownan´s POV. After reading Dangerous Depths I´m still wondering how the hell she did in this book to make me love Rownan more than Treygan when in Tangled Tides he was such a bastard. So imagine how good her writing is! I loved Rownan´s POV, his passion, his strength, his unconditional and infinite love for Vienna. I felt their love deep inside me, Karen has been able to create one of the most deep love stories that I´ve ever had the pleasure to read. And she did it through flashbacks and through the feelings of a boy. Can you believe it? Every time I read something about Rownan and Vienna either my heart melted of love or suffered for their pain.

Her writing is easy to follow but addictive at the same time. There isn´t any word in the book that doesn´t have meaning, every word has feelings behind. Each sentence has a power that drowns you to the depths of the story.

I also loved the addition of Nixie to the story and her lovelies sprites. I hope next book will be about her, that ending almost killed me.
As in the first book, Yara and Treygan relationship is really sweet and I enjoyed seeing them fighting together against evil.

Before reading Dangerous Depths I was a huge fan of Karen´s imagination and works, but after reading this book...I am in awe towards her power of creativity. She created Rathe, which is pretty awesome by itself. Then added all the wonderful creatures that lived in there: mermaids, selkies, sprites, sirens, gorgons.... And then she created Harte and the Kraken, that I think will have more importance in the next book, or at least I hope so.

So yeah, I was a huge fan of her work before but after Dangerous Depths but after reading this absolutely, addictive, full of emotions book all I have to say is Karen you really got me with this book!

Dangerous Depths leaves off perhaps a day or two from where Tangled Tides ended wherein Yara, who is trying to get used to her multi sea monster abilities/traits, and Treygan are in in blissful happiness after surviving the Triple Eighteen and are now able to travel to and from Rathe and see family and friends that have been trapped there for years. Rownan however since the Triple Eighteen has discovered horrible news about his wife and only true love Vienna, that during all those years of being trapped in Rathe, she tried to find a new way to get to Rownan; a dangerous and horrible path that no one has ever been able to survive or find a way out of. Rownan is determined to find her, dead or alive, and Yara and Treygan come to Rownan’s aid, against his wishes and take a journey that can leave their souls forever tormented, in pain and forever trapped in hell itself.

Most books I read have a tiny recap here and there in the first few chapters but this book I found lacked that and that is either a good thing, if you have just read the book before it, or a bad thing, if you have not read the book in a few years and have what I call these days “Mom Brain” wherein you have trouble remembering everything that occurred in the last book. It is not the author’s fault, I know she really wanted to get the ball rolling and get us, the reader, fully engaged in the book, which I feel she truly managed to do.

There were a lot of moments I love, specifically between Yara and Treygan. I loved the moment where he took her to a place in Rathe that he has been unable to take and share with anyone until Yara. The surroundings proved to be a very romantic setting and it is too bad that a place like that doesn’t truly exist (or does it?). However, I loved a part more than I think I should have which happen to take place in the depths of Harte between Yara and the Kraken. I would love to go into detail about that however, as I like to give reviews that are mostly spoiler free, this one would be filled with spoilers. If the author is reading this though, I sure hope this Kraken makes an appearance again in the future!

Dangerous Depths is a must read, filled with many magical adventures and gives the message that Love is Worth Everything and if you are child free I am sure you will find that you will not be able to put this book down and finish it much faster than I was able to!

You all know that I love love. I’ve certainly told you that enough times. So, when a book brings me a character who’s willing to battle hell (no, really, I mean actual hell) to get back his one true love…well, come on, my poor heart could hardly stand it! Add to that wonderful characters, tons of adventure, and a world beyond words, and you’ve got a great read!

The author weaves a wonderful story of an amazing love, one that looks beyond danger and fear in it’s need to exist. Rownan and Vienna are soulmates. And, due to an unfortunate situation have been separated for many years. Once Rownan discovers that Vienna is in Harte, the sea world’s version of hell, he is determined to save her…even thought others warn that after all this time, she is undoubtedly dead or worse! Even though this is a seemingly fruitless adventure, both Yara and Treygan, who we met in the first book, will not hear of him going alone. And so starts the adventure that tests their wits, their heroism and their relationships. Around every corner is a new challenge, an evil creature and an obstacle to overcome.

The characters grow so much in this book. Yara, who’s life changed radically at the end of book one, starts to better understand her new powers. Treygan, as always, is charming and I really enjoyed seeing his relationship with Yara continue to get deeper. Rownan…well, what can you say about a character who’s willing to go to hell to get the woman he loves…I think *sigh* says it all. Nixie was so brave and such a good friend. And…there’s a new character, a Kraken, that you just have to meet!

This is the second book in the series but in some ways it feels like a new story with Rownan taking a much bigger role (and Nixie feeling more like a main character than a secondary one). However, a lot of what happened previously affects this story. So, trust me, you will want to read the first book before you start this one…it’ll make it easier to dive right in and enjoy this great adventure!

Two years ago, Karen introduced us to a mystical world of mermaids, selkies, sirens, and gorgons in Tangled Tides. I remember how excited I was to read another perspective on these creatures and I thoroughly enjoyed the story. But let me tell you, Dangerous Depths far surpassed the first installment and has quickly become one of my favorite reads this year. Not only did we see growth and maturity in Yara, but we got to experience a different world entirely as Yara, Treygan, and Rowan travel to (get sucked into) Harte. Karen did a fantastic job describing the unique environment, albeit a scary one, and I also think she may have opened up the gate (ha!) to a spinoff with a certain coral-headed beast. (Okay, that would be my wish, Karen!) I found that I most enjoyed reading Rowan’s perspective. Whether that was because of the deep pain and desperation he felt, or if it was because I’m a sucker for selkies, either way, I enjoyed his chapters. And although Nixie’s part felt a little forced at first, it totally made sense about halfway through as to why we needed to see what was going on in her mind and in her world. I loved the addition of the sprites, the mythology behind them, and Nixie’s backstory – very creative. I found myself thinking about what might happen to everyone and couldn’t wait to carve out time to read. And the ending…ooh…I’m so ready for the next book now!

The Good: Great world-building! Although it took me a little bit to remember all of the characters and where they were, I was completely fascinated with Rathe and Harte.

The Issue: As I mentioned above, Nixie’s involvement (and whining) kind of distracted me from the rest of the story in the beginning, but she redeemed herself later on.

The Rating: 5 stars! An exciting, heartbreaking, and enthralling tale sure to keep you up all night reading.

Once again Karen has woven an enjoyable adventure under the sea. If you have not read book one “Tangled Tides” I must say, you need to stop now and go and read it. You need to read these books in order to enjoy the story and the cast of characters.

In Dangerous Depths we return once more to the cast from Tangled Ties, the world around them has changed although not in the way that they all were expecting it to. The curse has been lifted but instead of that fixing their problems it has created more.

Yara and Treygan want to enjoy this time together to explore Medusa’s world as well as their growing relationship but life never turns the way you think it will and they find themselves on the course to discover if love can truly help see them through any obstacle.

Taking a more center stage in this book is Rownan (who I wasn’t fond of in book one, but I enjoyed more in book two), who is ready to return home now that the gateway is open and be with his lovely wife, Vienna. When he finds that she has taken it on herself to travel to a dangerous realm in search of a gateway he vows to go after her regardless of the cost.

Yara and Treygan join him on his journey, as the realm of Harte is most evil and is their equivalent of hell. It will take all of them to not just survive the journey but to accomplish what they set out to do. Everything in their lives is tested on their journey and they are yet to find out if they are strong enough to survive.

Karen has bested book one, with the release of Dangerous Depths. The characters are much more concrete and developed in this one, while the mythical and ever changing world is just as captivating as you could hope it to be. While this book shows the realm of Harte as one of the most dangerous places for this group to go, I find myself anxiously awaiting what other adventures she hopefully has in store for them.

It had been some time since I first read TANGLED TIDES, but from the moment I cracked DANGEROUS DEPTHS open, it seemed as if hardly any time had passed. And I was once again reminded of my love for mermaids. This is the author that sparked that love in the first place.

Sacrifice plays another huge role in this story, just as it did in book one. This time it is Yara and Treygan offering up their help to Rownan as he goes in search of his wife who hasn't been seen in nearly 20 years. The probability of making out of this journey alive is low, but they do what they must in order to find Vienna. And let me tell you, this journey was more than I thought it would be. It was crazy and absolutely terrifying at times. But oh so worth the read.

Back in the first book I had no cares for Rownan, but in this one he slowly grew on me. I got to know him and little better and soon I was comfortable enough with him I found myself hoping and praying he makes it out of this whole mess alive and with Vienna by his side. I love when an author can make you do a 180 on a character that you had no likes for in the beginning. It was one of the things about this book that sets it apart from other sequels. I don’t think I have read too many sequels that had me doing an about-face when it comes to characters.

Absolutely loved this one..even the cringe worthy scenes the characters find themselves in. It was scary and intense almost the entire read. How could I not recommend this book? If you have read the first one, pick this one up ASAP! If you haven’t read TANGLED TIDES, what are you waiting for? Go. Read. Now!

I’ve only known one other Yara. I also liked her right away. Yara is one of my favorite female characters of all time because she just doesn’t take anything lying down, you know? She takes care of business. Clearly, I loved Dangerous Depths! We pick up right where Tangled Tides left off and the action grips you from the first word! In fact, I felt the book really kept a fast pace throughout, making it hard to come to a ‘stopping point’ so I could, you know, like pea and eat. ;) Yara and Treygan accompany Rownan to Harte to attempt to rescue his wife, who it seems is as impatient as I am because she just couldn’t wait for him and has gone to Harte (which is like their hell) to try and get to him in the human world! In true hell fashion, things aren’t what they seem and between hallucinations and a Kraken you’ve got to read to believe, I wasn’t sure of their fate until the very last second! SO GOOD! The writing is impeccable and left me crying and laughing…sometimes all at once. This is a 1 billion star book, but GR will only let me give it 5, so here they are!

As the second book in the series, I do think you should read Tangled Tides first, just to give you some back story on these folks and their situation…and because It’s awesome! Looking forward to book three!

Yara thought her Triple Eighteen was hell, but she’s seen nothing yet in Karen Amanda Hooper’s Dangerous Depths.

This novel is told through three points of view: Yara (mermaid/selkie/siren/gorgon/human), Rownan (selkie/human), and Nixie (siren). Yara struggles with her new powers while exploring her love for Treygan and her new home of Rathe. In Tangled Tides, I didn’t care much for Rownan, but his motivations become so clear and his love for Vienna is so pure and powerful. He would literally go through hell for her. The character who grew the most for me was Nixie. I loved her chapters and seeing her moments with the sprites.

Hooper’s world building is amazing. I loved seeing the beauty of Rathe, cringed at the horrors of Harte, and enjoyed the additions to her sea monsters’ worlds. The fast-paced plot increased the tension, which was punctuated by moments of humor and love. The end made me cry with its heart-breaking beauty.

Dangerous Depths by Karen Amanda Hooper makes me wish I could live in Rathe too or at least have the ability to draw the exquisite world. I highly recommend this novel and the Sea Monster Memoirs series.

The story picks up where the first one left off and I had hoped Yara would get to enjoy the peace and quiet of her life with Treygan but it seems another quest is on the horizon. I was happy to delve into Rownan's past and learn about his soul mate Vienna and what motivated him to try and trick Yara into believing they were a couple. I also had mixed feelings about Nixie as she comes across self absorbed at times yet she redeemed herself in this book and I understand her more now that her life before becoming a siren was revealed. Sometimes we are our own worst enemy and monsters of Harte came in all shapes and sizes. Plenty of action and adventure with tender moments thrown in to keep you turning the pages. A heartwarming love story about mermaids, selkies, sirens and other mythical sea creatures.

A great follow up story to Tangled Tides and I can't wait for the next one. An Arc copy of this book was provided by the author in return for an honest review.

Dangerous Depths is a great addition to The Sea Monster Memoirs series. Yara has become a wonderful unexpected creature that will suprise you over and over. Rownan's love for Vienna knows no bounds and he will stop at nothing to get her back from the depths of Harte. This story is filled with life altering moments that will leave your eyes filled with tears and danger that will have you on the edge of your seat. Treygan and Yara's love continues to grow stronger and in the end will it be enough? Constant danger and enticing propositions make this book a great read suitable for younger and older readers alike. Will love be enough to bring everyone back alive? From sprites and gorgons to sirens, you never know which creature you are going to interact with next.
A wonderful YA read that will change the way you think about life under the water forever. Karen Amanda Hooper surpasses all expectations in this amazing story.

I got an ARC from the author. I was so excited to get the ARC. it did not disappoint.

If you haven't read Tangle Tides, which is the first book in the series then go out and read it.

This book is about love, hope, friendship, never giving up and believing. Treygan, Yara and Rownan embark on a journey where they have to stick together and trust each other. Everything will be tested in this journey. This was an emotional roller coaster ride that had me tearing up at times.

It's a great young adult book that anyone can read. Karen A. Hooper has created an amazing world that keeps growing and we keep finding new wolds and exploring them along with Yara, Treygan and everyone else. I can't wait for book 3 to see what is thrown their ways.

Highly recommend this book when it comes out.

Somehow this book was even better than the first. The emotions were so powerfully portrayed at times i had tears rolling down my cheeks.

This time round we are also given Rownan's side of the story along with Nixie's and they really dig into your heart. We are introduced to more brilliant characters and old characters we get to see in a new light.

We see how dedicated Yara and Treygan are to helping Rownan in his search for his wife Vienna. A tightness bonds them together and they learn more about their strengths.

I especially loves the two little sprites, they had such heart and spirit i was cheering for them. And Nixie? Well that siren soared straight to my heart.

If you liked the first book, you will honestly love this one and eagerly anticipate the third book. I know I am !!

First off off I would like to thank the author. I recieved this book in exchange for an honest review.


Wow this is a great story! This book is more intense than the first one. It started off cute and sweet but turned dark and sad very fast. I read this in under a day. I felt more of a connection to the characters and I believe they developed between book one and book two.
The world of creatures were ominous especially the lamperies (yikes they scare me)I thought the authors use of the Devil's Triangle and regular creatures she turned into scary crazy montsers was brilliant!
I was happy that we got more of Rowan and Nixies stories in with Yara and Treygan. It mixed it up and kept you interested. I am now on hook for book 3 and hope it is just as wonderfull as this one was.
