Riding The Line #2

Satin and Steel

Rate this book
This is Book 2 of the best selling Riding the Line series. All Rhiannon Blake wants is to find her little sister, Mickey. Even though she knows going to a biker bar alone to search for Mickey isn't the best idea, the last thing Rhee expects is to be assaulted. Before things get too far, Dax Jamison, the sexy, tattooed vice president of the Phantoms motorcycle club comes to her rescue. But Rhee has stepped into the middle of something that is far larger than she expects. Dax insists that the Phantoms provide protection for her until he can figure out why she is being targeted by a rival crew. At first, Rhee clashes with Dax—he’s arrogant, domineering, dangerous—and taken. Will Rhee be able to resist her feelings for her rescuer? Will Dax be able to deny his attraction for the girl he’s taken in to protect? This book contains strong language, violence, abuse, and steamy/graphic sexual scenes which some readers might find offensive. This work is intended for readers over the age of 18. Jayna Vixen is an Amazon Bestselling Author. Let yourself be lured in… Satin and Excerpt Rhee took a deep breath and squared her shoulders before walking into the seedy bar on West Avenue. Lenny’s was located on the outskirts of town, and it wasn’t exactly a place for a college girl by herself, but Rhee had no choice. Ignoring the stares from the rough-looking patrons, she marched a straight line to the bartender, a hairy guy with a big belly. Her hands were shaking as she shoved a flyer at him. He didn’t reach out to take it, though. Instead, he remained silent as he poured a shot of amber liquid into a glass and regarded her with one eyebrow raised. “Have you seen this girl?” Rhee’s voice came out high but assertive. The bartender smirked. “What if I have?” Rhee drew herself up to her full height, a petite five feet three inches. “Then I suggest you tell me where she is. My little sister is only nineteen years old.” She tried to make her voice sound calm and steady, but inside she was quaking with tension. The bartender suddenly looked more serious. “Your little sister, you say?” Rhee nodded. “That’s what I said, sir. She was dating a guy who rode with a motorcycle club that used to stop in here. She’s missing. At least just let me put up this flyer?” The bartender nodded to someone behind Rhee’s head and then looked back at her. “Well, missy. You have a lot of nerve coming in here and making demands. But…it turns out that I have a little sister myself. Hand over one of them flyers you got there. You can put one up in the ladies’ room, too, if you want.” He held out his beefy hand. Ten minutes later, Rhee’s breath rushed out in a great whoosh as she pushed her way back out onto the street. All she wanted was to get back to her tiny university apartment and lose herself in the article she was working on for the student paper. In her haste to get back to her old Toyota, she nearly ran headlong into a tall, blond man who had just parked his impressive-looking bike by the curb. “Steady there, little girl,” a husky voice rasped with an undertone of mirth. Little girl? Rhee glared up and felt her breath catch in her throat as a pair of twinkling blue eyes met her own green ones. Damn, he’s tall. Irritated that she had to crane her neck to see his face, she straightened, flushing under the stranger’s perusal. He wore a black leather vest over a tight, black tee, and loose jeans that might even conceal a holstered weapon.

Cliff hanger dammit!!! Rhee I am so pissed off at you right now!!! How the hell is Dax suppossed to fix this!!!

When is the next book coming out?????

Okay I just need to add that in my opinion this was a fanfic of the Sons of Anarchy TV series. I tend to stay away from fanfics but this one was awesome! I don't actually follow the series but after reading this I think I might!

I'd like to also add that had I known that there was a cliffhanger, I would have chosen to wait for the next book!

I just don't know how I'm gonna survive the wait!!!

Every since I became obsessed with Kristen Ashley my love for motorcycle bad boys has me searching high and low for my next fix. This story exceeded my expectations. The way the story unfolded and how expressive the author described Rhiannon's feelings pulled me right in. The anguish of the back and forth pull mixed in with an MC well need I say more. The first to the last page had me wanting more. I can't believe I got suckered into another damn book with a cliffhanger. However I can respect where the author is coming from. Rhiannon wasn't weak but at the same time she was lost. She needs to find her strength that is just waiting to be unleashed in book to (so cliffhanger is forgiven). I can't WAIT to see what unfolds in the next book. Boy of boy does Dax have his work cut out for him. He said he " If only you were a little older, a little.. I don't know rougher. Your just so innocent; you have such a pure heart!" Careful what you wish for Dax I have a feeling you've just met your match!

I will admit that I read a lot. I forsake the cause of sleep to find out where characters wind up in the movie that is running in my mind, restlessly fighting back the need to shut my eyes or get the recommended hours of sleep to cope with the next day. That being said there are few books or authors that I will actually write a review for. But sometimes I come across a book that refuses to let me push it into “I’ll write it tomorrow” pile. These books usually get reviews as soon as my mind has wrapped itself around the last word, leaving me with the deep seeded need to review while the story is still fresh in my mind.

In all fairness this usually happens with indie authors that I think may need a little more recognition than they are receiving. That’s what happened with the book Satin and Steel. Now before you ask were there minor issues with the book? Of course. But as I have stated before I am extremely forgiving if the story captures me and catapults me straight into the story. As always I will list them after. Despite the author's name, this isn't erotica.

There is one sex scene, tastefully done, there wasn't enough erotic scenes to classify it that way in my opinion. BUT it's a good thing as the story doesn't rely on that to hold your attention.

Satin and Steel is the debut novel from a new indie author Jayna Vixen. The story is of Rhiannon (Rhee) and Dax. Being a Sons of Anarchy fan myself, the story read as if it was an alt universe version of the story, but unique enough to hold its own. SoA fans won’t be disappointed thinking it’s a simple rehashing of the story, but simply contains some elements that seemed to be inspired by it.

The story starts off very quickly with Rhee looking for her missing sister and finding herself in some trouble. Luckily due to circumstances Dax finds her in a sense. The story progresses with Rhee needing protection from a situation unknown, looking for her sister and fighting her growing feelings for Dax. Dax sees Rhee as a innocent young girl in the wrong place at the wrong time. She stirs emotions in him that he doesn’t want to admit and can’t due to the fact that he has a girlfriend. Instead he offers the clubs protection and eventually the club looks to her as a younger sister/daughter.

Much more happens here with the situation, but it quietly runs in the background as Dax and Rhee’s relationship develops. NOW I want to say that yes Dax has a girlfriend BUT he doesn’t spend every waking moment in the book trying to get down her pants. In fact he was so good at pushing away his feelings and turning to his girlfriend I caught myself growling a couple of times. (**On a personal note: I HATE CHEATERS. In a book it’s a trigger for me. It takes everything I have to finish a book if it’s something that happens. With that being said, Dax isn’t a cheater in the most thought of use of the word.) He fights tooth and nail, floating the ship named I’m taken on the river of denial. At points I felt sorry for him. I felt that he was trapped between his own hang-ups/comfort zone and trying to grasp what he really wants. He does express a need/want to leave the MC and in a sense sees his girlfriend as his out. But again their relationship is tied up in history as well as some genuine feelings for the most part. Sometimes he can be so bull headed and stubborn you just want to reach in and smack him. Like many men, his logic isn’t really logic but rather a derp moment you can’t see why he didn’t get why it was the wrong decision. He’s protective, gentle, thoughtful, but conflicted, quick to temper and somewhat rash. (Some may disagree with his use of his girlfriend Trish as an outlet for his lust for Rhee, but remember that he’s a biker and well that just will explain his mentality.)
Rhee is a young woman who has been damaged by her past. At first she seems timid with flashes of an inner core of steel that makes you feel for her. You don’t really understand how damaged she is until almost half way through the book. (Jayna does mention the past with Marco a lot in this book, I am hoping that with the continuation this will be delved more into and explored, not pushed to the way side as “wait…what? What about?” as so many stories seem tend to do. This thought also goes to the side character of Wince. Hopefully his being mentioned throughout the book as a major side character solidifies his place as a strong force in the second book as well. *fingers crossed*) She falls fast for Dax, but her naïveté shows when she doesn’t recognize the desire that courses through her body every time she sees him. While this may seem ridiculous, it came off as somewhat believable when the background for Rhee is revealed. There were times that it could get a little silly, but I think it really just projected how withdrawn and clueless (not in a bad way) that Rhee was. There were times that she did try to display her independence, but it was a new concept for her and sometimes the past is harder to shake off than you think. Their relationship progresses and just as you think YES! You’re denied. But it’s actually what keeps the story moving along. Again Dax isn’t a cheater and Rhee has never been a healthy relationship. Both are very naïve and innocent in different but the same ways.

Now I would be a honest bookworm if I didn’t mention the flaws in this story. Transitions…transitions.…transitions. Again this author needs some editing done. Not a ton, but she does need someone to tell her where to put a scene separator. (This actually is becoming more a common place thing.) The simple use of some kind of breaker would help her transitions, as well as helping the story flow smoother. An example would be at one point toward the end Dax is at his house thinking about Rhee and then he is walking into the club. No separator which confused me for a few minutes. Several things were mentioned at the end of the book, but not explained well. I can’t exactly explain without giving spoilers, but again I’m hoping they were more hints as to what is going on in the next book.

All in all I really liked this book, and for a debut it’s good. I enjoyed the story a lot. So much in fact that it reminded me why I don’t usually read series books until at least the second one is out. The ending is actually that good where I want to read the next one NOW. I will read it again and the favorite parts are still running through my mind. This author has a ton of potential and I can’t wait to see what she has in store for us next.
4 1/2 Stars (due to editing that needs done.)

Wow, does this book ever suck!! The description says it was "loosely inspired" by Sons of Anarchy, but the crappy writing tells me it was probably fan fiction. Bad fan fiction. I am confused as to whether or not I'm supposed to be rooting for the main couple to get together. There is zero chemistry between them. Plus he has a girlfriend...one he seems perfectly happy with! Probably due to her nice rack seeing as how that's all the description we get of her. Well that and her blonde hair. I get that it was from the hero's POV and that he's a guy. However, I am not a guy so I'm going to need a bit more than that. At one point, he sends her off to work "full of his hot cream". Yes, that is a direct quote. I am far from a prude, but seriously??? A) That is not the heroine of the story...it's the hero's girlfriend! While the heroine is in the other room! B) How is that romantic in any way, shape or form? Is that supposed to make me root for him somehow? Because I don't.

==========================================

Don't ask me why I kept reading after the above was written at 30%, but I guess I really wanted it to get better. It didn't so I am baffled by all the 4 & 5 star reviews. There were literally more sex scenes between the hero and his girlfriend than him and the book's heroine. Not that a sex scene equals true love, but since there were zero 'romantic' scenes, that was all I had to go on.

The heroine waffled between being a simpering ninny and what the hero considered "spunky". Umm no..she had no spunk. She was an irritating doormat and I didn't care if her past gave her reason to be. Her occasional bout of backbone came off as very childish - like how a teenager would act.

There is a sequel, which I won't be reading because I do not give a sh*t if these two people ever get together. The chick had better chemistry with the biker she wasn't interested in than with the one she was.

Satin and Steel reads like SOA fanfic. While I have no problems reading pubbed fanfic, I don't like when it's blatant. We have the Phantoms MC. Hawk-Pres. He and VP has issues. Dax- VP, blond hair viking. Girlfriend is a Dr. named Trish that he has been on and off with since high school. Wince- grunt w/mad computer skills. Young and tattooed up. Various other members that don't have a place in the story. The MC runs guns and are fighting with a Hispanic gang called the Chicos. If the Neo Nazis or Irish had been introduced, I would have just called it quits and left.

Despite my issues, Jayne does develop a unique storyline despite the familiar set up. I would have liked a better balance between the romance and the conflict. We spend way to much time in hero and heroine's head and don't get much of the surrounding story. The scenes drag in places, especially since heroine doesn't communicate well and the hero spends a majority of his time apologizing. There is a cliffhanger that made me want to stomp my kindle.

If you like Sons of Anarchy then you will definitely love this book. The characters associated with the motorcycle club members are incredibly similar to those in the show. From the V.P. of the club (Dax) who secretly wants to be out of the club life, his on again-off again girlfriend from high school (Trisha) who he has now been dating for a solid 3 years and is in medical school to the young, caring and goofy member (Wince) who is a genius when it comes to computers. Throw in Charisma who was once a porn star and now ran her own business (funded by Dax) and you basically have part of the cast from the show.

Now about the story....
Erotic factor - 3.5 - 4 stars

Rhiannon (Rhee) is desperatly trying to find her little sister who called her late one night in a panic asking for her help. She knows that her sisters boyfriend is in a biker gang and without any help from the police (as this is not a rare occurrence with her sister) she decides to pursue her search and include known biker hangouts. Her search leads her to a run down biker bar filled with seedy characters who attack capture and attack her.

Dax is the vice president of The Phantoms motorcycle club and was in the right place at the right time when it comes to Rhee. After he discovers Rhee passed out in his club's get away van, he becomes instantly aware that something has happened to her. He seems to have a strong urge to rescue, care for and protect some of the women who come into his life. So when he recognizes the 5'3 innocent "kid" who he knows has been looking for her sister, he charges himself with helping her. From the moment he brings her into his home he struggles with the desires that he begins to feel towards Rhee. He calls her kid to remind himself that she is completely innocent in comparison to him, and to help disassociate the protective and sexual feelings he has towards her.

"So naive, so innocent....wonder if she's a virgin"...Dax

He enlists the help of his club to help protect Rhee from his world of violence that she was thrown into through no fault of her own.

When Dax takes Rhee to the club's hangout we are shown the culture of Dax's motorcycle club. As they enter the club, Rhee begins to panic. Images of her attack come to the forefront as she notices the hard looking club members inside. One of the members (Wince) starts to approach her and asks Dax if Rhee is the clubs 'stowaway'. Rhee, already frightened turns to Dax for protection. Dax gathered her to his side and told Wince to back off sternly. Wince immediately stopped his advance and says "Just wanted to get a good look at her. Is she all right?" Rhee quietly says hello and Wince's response "You're really okay?" The members respect each other and the people they consider theirs to protect.

Although it takes some coaxing on Dax's part to get Rhee to relax, he achieves it with this statement...
"Look at me while I tell you this, because I want you to believe me. I am not going to touch you okay? Not like that. No one here is going to hurt you. No one messes with my guests. Do you believe me?"

She begins to relax around the members of the club.

Wince's character and Rhee become close while she is at the club. The are very close in age and his caring demeanor make her feel more comfortable around him. He can also make her laugh...

"Wince was twirling around like a demented ballerina and Rhee was laughing so hard she could hardly take a breath. Wince stumbled and fell to the ground and then he too, began to laugh uproariously. Rhee attempted to go to Wince but fell against him while laughing"

Dax's jealousy is brought to the forefront when he witnesses this scene and notices the bond growing between Rhee and Wince. He has tried to make Rhee laugh but has barely been able to do so and every time he tries to innocently touch her, she shies away. She has never attempted to reach out and touch Dax herself, but it is clear that she does not have reservations from reaching out to Wince.

Does this book have sexual tension?

"How about, I view you as the sexiest man alive? How about I view you as a hot, muscled alpha male who has an amazing girlfriend whom I could never compete with? How about I am unable to sleep at all now, thanks to the unrequited lust I seem to have developed for your hot mouth?"...Rhee

"Every time I turn around, somebody else has their mouth on you, Rhiannon. I want to put my mouth on you, Rhiannon."...Dax

This book definitely exceeded my expectations and kept my attention throughout. My only complaints about this story are that at times it seemed that Dax is only interested in getting into Rhee's pants. Every time he was around or was thinking about Rhee, he was always thinking about having sex with her. He clearly was using his girlfriend and had no reservations about wanting to have sex with Rhee. It would have been nice to experience more of that part of their relationship.
I also would have liked for the story to be longer. The author could have elaborated more on parts of their journey together.

That said, I cannot wait until the next book comes out!!!

My friend recommended this book to me. I was looking for an MC book that really captured me and pulled me into the story. I wanted a romance with some hot biker men in it as well, and that's exactly what I got with Satin and Steel.

Rhee is a college student and only has her sister in her life. They only have each other. Mickey ends up going missing and no one will take Rhee serious about her disappearance. Something just isn't right. The only thing Rhee cares about is finding her sister and she isn't going to let anything or anyone stand in her way. Danger, fear, sadness, love, nothing will get in her way of finding out where her little sister is.

Dax is a sexy, irresistible, vice- president of The Phantom biker club! He's been dating his high school sweetheart, Trish, for years now. She's his old lady and definitely one lucky girl!

Dax stumbles upon Rhee in, well, a horrible situation. He takes her in, even though she is an absolute stranger. He welcomes her into his home and helps her in every way she needs. Little do they both know that they would soon start feeling more than friendship with each other.

Rhee has never been with any man before. She has had bad encounters with men her whole life. Trust isn't something that is easily given, but with Dax, well, it's different. He's not like all other men. He is a true man! Rhee just gives her trust to him so easily because he is so genuine.

Love and tragedy unfolds in this well told story of romance and action. I was routing for Dax and Rhee the whole way through and I will in the books to come!

I read this book within a day. It was that amazing! It reminds me of “The Sons of Anarchy”. It left me wanting more and stopped at a cliff hanger. I'm so excited to start reading the next book in the series! I recommend this book to anyone that likes to read MC/ romance books. 5 stars from me!

Enjoyable read that does end with a bit if a cliff hanger!
Rhee finds herself at the mercy of the Pheonix MC and in the care of Dax. Rhee's life has just become complicated, perception will dictate what happens next and this all is interfering with her quest to find her missing sister.
Meanwhile, Rhee becomes more and more involved with the MC adding to the underlying angst and frustration for the main characters.
Interested to see where this story is headed, have an idea and hope there's not too much of a wait for the next book!o

I was sort of let down with this instalment. I actually preferred the prequel.

Dax just didn't do it for me here...he's kind of a jerk. Especially the way he .

The ending is cliff-hanger-ish and I'm torn if I should even bother with the next book.

This book was highly recommended in a reading group I am a member of and I’m not disappointed by the story but I am not a fan of the “buy the next book” cliff hanger BS that so many authors are selling. I would have paid more for the full book that offers the FULL story.

***SPOILER maybe***

My heart hurt for Dax in the first book, he was just so lost. In this book he still seems lost but is now the VP of the club. I’m not sure how many years have passed or why Trish came back - that was never explained, but she was so sure he’d never cheat...wrong! The book did not delve into his feelings about cheating and not once did he show remorse.

The book seemed to drag a bit but I’ll presume it’s the build up for the 3rd book (again the “buy the next book” thing) The attraction is clear between Dax and Rhee

Rhi is searching for her sister and stumbles across Dax. A few days later, Rhi goes into a biker bar after getting a lead about her sister and is attacked by the MC members there. She is rescued inadvertently by Dax and he takes her back to his house to heal and be treated by his girlfriend who is a resident. Rhi is worried when she wakes up and does not know where she is, but Dax is very gentle with her and she begins to trust him. When she heals enough to go home, they find that her apartment has been trashed by a rival MC and she is forced to seek protection from his MC.

They have an attraction to each other, but being that Dax has a girlfriend, they try to stay away from each other. Eventually, they do end up sleeping together and Rhi ends up becoming pregnant. She thinks she has a clue about her sister’s whereabouts and feels it is better if she leaves Dax, so she takes off to Hawaii.

I think that is where this one ends.

This was an ok book. I liked the relationship between Rhi and Dax. There is not too much to say about it I guess…

It was an okay book with my fav topic mc club and a lady in distress.
Im not sure its worth $5, it needs some editting and it was a short read I think about 150 pages.
Since it was a short read its a little hard to review for me, Im curious about THE sequel.
I read that Jayna is writing a prequel, not sure if its going to add to THE story cant see how.
Not really a fan of all the prequels and sequels lately.
This is becoming such a trend. Its tiring, Im greatfull for writers like K. Ashley no sequels just the complete intense story in one book.
Also its labeled as erotica on Amazon but I dont agree. Sure there's a sex scene but thats no erotica in my book. It could have been a great book if Jayna explored more of the relationships between Rhee DAX and Trish.
Its a little flat since she's skipping weeks between different encounters between Rhee and Dax at some point.

This book finds the characters featured in Earning the Cut (Riding the Line, #0.5) by Jayna Vixen , now in present tense. Dax has now matured into the alpha biker the prequel hinted at. Rhiannon is a college student daring to intrude on the biker world in mission to find her missing sister.

I really liked that this Motorcycle Club book was gritty and adhere to the normal romance novel rules. Dax is written as guy with a lot of options and exercises them from time to time. The way all the relationship points were explored felt very true to life, and messy at times. I found Rhiannon likable, with a good mix of being submissive, and at times hard headed. Kudos to author for pulling that off without her seeming bi-polar. All my MC addicts should give this a try.

5.plus stars. Have to say Thank you again to Ms. Rashida, another good book. I truly enjoy it. This book had drama, action, love and sadness. The story of Rhee and Mickey, when they were growing up Wow, so much emotions and so much torments. Dax and The Phantoms MC, have to say Wow how they truly love Rhee! Dax was Rhee savior but also her downfall. Dax sees Rhee as "Little Girl" but with a Woman body, in his mind of course. But He wanted her and he didn't want her; I have to admit that Dax is a (Mega-Asshole) he wanted to have cake and eat it to. This is not Burger King! Oh But I truly did enjoy this book. Bravo to the Author! Please bring second book, Can not wait! I need to read more about my (Tinkerbell-Rhee aka Stowaway aka Little Girl! Definitely a book to read again.

Great book. I cannot wait for the next one. At first I didn't like how Dax and Rhee started out, but by the end I wanted them together. But I also wanted him to stay with Trish. The way Jayna Vixen writes makes you connect with Dax and you want him to have it all. Loosely based on SOA. Made it a better read for me

Ok, I loved it... however the abrupt ending. Gah. When is the next one going to be released?

Was this book perfect? No. There was some continuity issues. However, what makes a book 'good' to me? It's one I think about after I've read... and I freakin' dreamt about this book.

A total rip off from SOA but since I love that show I loved the book. I hate cliffhangers and this one has a big one but still gave it 4 stars

This wasn't earth shattering but it was good. I love MC books and this one fit the bill.

The second book in the series Riding the Line, Satin and Steel, written by Jayna Vixen ('Vixen'… love the pseudonym!) was my favorite story in the series so far. Of course I have only read two of four in the series, but who's counting. The story while similar to most MC erotic stories did have a few twists and turns that surprised. The characters growth through the duration of the story was natural and made sense. I was particularly satisfied with the method the Author 'introduced' the heroine to the Club. It was a surprising intro compared to most MC stories and added to the puzzling aspects of the story.

Again however, my appetite for sex and more sex was not necessarily completely gratified. The sex scenes were well done, not raunchy, or unbelievable. The Author did deal with a situation which for some authors could be sensitive to describe. Jayna did a stand up job in sensually unfolding the scene and sufficiently satiating my need for sex.

All in all a great second book in the series. I enjoyed the story, the intrigue, the sexiness, and I am looking forward to book 3, Leather and Sand.

(Note: not a professional reviewer... so please only 'nice' criticism.)

Good series, fast read perfect for the summer and good character development with variety. You have keep opening the next book to find out how Dax and Rhee end up together (assuming, of course, that they do!).

The first book in this series sets up this book. If you like an MC read this will seem mild but a good lead in to next book.
