Whisper to Me

Rate this book
A hot and consuming New Adult romance about a wayward musician and the one girl who keeps him grounded…

At college, Rachel has a reputation for being a sarcastic flirt with a thing for star athletes. No one at school knows that she’d had her heart ripped to shreds by her high school sweetheart, who’d driven them both off the side of the road on a borrowed motorcycle, and then abandoned her. No one knows the real Rachel Mattson—except one person…

Ever since he helped nurse his sister’s feisty best friend back to health, pierced bass player Kai Nakos has been head over heels in love. But the supposed bad boy can’t risk letting Rachel know the truth—especially now that the two of them are back in their hometown for the summer, together for the first time since the months following that fateful night. Never mind that Rachel’s ex is back, groveling for her forgiveness.

Shaken by her ex’s return, Rachel finds herself turning to the one guy she knows she can trust. Kai is willing to hide his feelings for her, just to have Rachel touch him again. After all, this is only a temporary fling. Until it becomes something more. But maybe it had been more all along.

Title: Whisper To Me
Series: Between Breaths #3
Author: Christina Lee
Release Date: May 20, 2014
Rating: 4.5 stars
Cliffhanger:. No
HEA:

Between the Breaths is one of those New Adult series I look forward to. I loved Bennett and Avery story and liked Ella and Quinn’s, so I waited impatiently for the next part, especially because I needed to get to know Rachel, Avery and Ella’s friend, more. I’m so glad the author didn’t disappoint and delivered something so sexy, lovely and intense.

Rachel is very complex heroine. In previous books, Christina Lee pictured her as a little bit shallow, even slutty girl. Careful reader though could see that it didn’t even begin to scratch the surface of her personality. She was so much more than a ‘party girl’. In Whisper To Me we can finally see the real her. And it was shocking to see how strong she was and how much she had to carry on her shoulders.

The horrible accident that changed her life few years ago still bugs Rachel even though she survived and went away to college. After her high school sweetheart broke her heart and soul and ditched her when she needed him the most, Rachel changed. She decided to not let other people in and become entirely someone else.

When summer break finally started, Rachel came back to her hometown to help her mother with her business. That’s when she reconnects with Kai, the only person in the world that knows the real her. The boy who was her best friend, the one who took care of her and… fell for her, hard.

Rachel doesn’t know that this badass, pierced and tattooed musician is in love with her for about four years. Kai never made a move or showed her how he really feels. But know, he sees Rachel for the first time in years, so he wants to let go of his fear and give her his heart.

What starts as casual summer fling quickly alternates into something way much complicated.

The chemistry between Kai and Rachel was off the charts. It was incredibly erotic when the two of them started to get on it. They were also adorable couple. Simply one of my favorite for sure! They not only shared a past, but they built they future together.

What’s was the best value in this novel was characters’ creation. Christina Lee made fantastic job in making Rachel likeable, yet broken and the hero… complete swoon!

Kai was so fab! He just stole the show. Lately, I’ve been a little bit over bad boys/manwhores/musicians, but Kai was so realistic, so authentic, so beautiful and gentle and… *swoon* Best hero ever! Not only did my heart broke for him, I also found him the sexiest boy ever (yes, even sexier than Bennett!) and him being a dirty talker? O my god, it was so sexy! The book was really hot! On my steam – o – meter Kai got 10/10! Need I say more to coax you into reading it?

Overall, Whisper To Me is incredibly sensual, sexy and beautiful New Adult read. It's absolutely my favorite novel by Christina Lee and made me want to devour her next books even more.

NEW ADULT FTW!!!

I was actually considering vlogging (video-blogging) this review but nah. You guys don’t want to see my squeeeeeing x 10 faces right?

While I was reading, I had to pause several times and just sigh in contentment to how perfect this book is. At times it’s sweet, but not sickeningly so; it’s emotional, but not to the point where it’s tear-inducing, and above all, this book is the epitome of what quality New Adult literature is, fully encompassing the transition between adolescence and true adulthood. These days, so many books ride the coattails of an overused book theme: bad boy falls for virgin heroine; however, Whisper to Me doesn’t. Rather than be about a particular theme or popular idea that would certainly appeal to the masses, instead, this story is character-driven and has a very well-paced and thought-out plot. A few other aspects I had to note were:

- Low angst level
- Highly likable characters who are also easy to relate to (or maybe it’s just me since I’m about their age)
- Conflicts in the story are very realistic – never did I feel like drama and conflict was unnecessary or contrived
- Incredible writing! Syntax variety isn’t something a lot of authors can do and do it well but Christina Lee hits the nail on the head!

Even though this is the third book in the Between Breaths series, it can definitely be read as a standalone – this is coming from someone who doesn’t remember much from book 1, didn’t read book 2 (which I need to rectify immediately), and was still captivated and totally invested in this story and characters. The author provides just the right amount of background info so even if you’re new to her work, you won’t feel lost at all.

You don’t need to know much about the plot itself – the blurb is actually a really good summary and indication of what the book is about. Here are some brief character descriptions of the main characters:

description

Kai: half-Dutch, half-Native American and a pierced dirty talker – I had dreams about this fellow guys. I would give 10 stars to his character if I could. All his life he’s been perceived a certain way and was never able to shake it off. All everyone sees is a hot bad boy who messes up in life, and Rachel is the only one who’s been able to see that he’s so much more. The author really did a good job of portraying their deep connection, both on a physical level and emotional level – these two are equals.

Rachel: She’s outwardly sarcastic, tough, and big flirt, yet she hides a very painful secret only a few know – including Kai. This ordeal pretty much scarred her for life, and she bears the physical scars to prove it. Rachel’s the kind of girl I want to be best friends with.

This is a book I would recommend to everyone but especially to those who need a romance story that’s nostalgic, steamy, and will leave you with a big smile on your face. It's also thought-provoking book that sheds light on the beauty of relationships & friendships. I could use multiple adjectives to describe the story: authentic, sexy, sensational, etc...but I’m going with perfect as it really is one perfect love story.

My first Christina Lee novel was a such sweet (and hot) experience. Yes, hot. I warn you - this is a "full blooded" new adult romance which means no readers under the age of 18. Other than that, Whisper To Me is a part of the series, it is third book in Between Breaths but it can be read as standalone, you won't miss anything if you haven't read previous stories.

Why I swooned?

- Kai Nakos. Tanja and I are always swooning over the perfect book boyfriends and this boy is so one of them. He's a perfect mix of bad and good boy who fights for the girl he loves.

- Friends to lovers/best friend's brother storyline. I love this kind of stories. They have a dash star-crossed lovers, but with the happy ending. No insta-love, no fainting and lusting at the first sight. You have two people who know each other well, but still find out about things that surprise them.

- Epic make out scenes. Oh, boy... Christina Lee is very "verbal" when it comes to those.

Few things that might bother you.

- Typical new adult. If you are not a fan of this genre, it's probably the best to skip it or read it only if you are in mood for it, because Whisper To me has all cliches.

- Writing. Too repetitive at times and charters tend to think in circles. More telling than showing. Focused on romance and main characters.

Final verdict?

Sweet and predictable love story you'll enjoy reading when you feel craving for few hours of mindless fun. Or when your boyfriend/husband drives you crazy and mad and you need fictional boyfriends that will bring back your faith in real-life men.

My favorite type of YA/NA book is one that is sweet, with low angst (no idiotic characters), low frustration (again, no idiotic characters), and one with a lovely romance in the center of it.

This one had everything that works for me, I enjoyed it from start to finish
 photo 2783945661.gif

The writing style is amazing, I'm definitely going to read more from this author ASAP!! photo 311685.gif

The main guy, Kai photo 72866.gif photo 767622.gif photo 72866.gif photo 767622.gif
Loved, loved loved him! He is secretly in love with his best friend, and now they finally have a chance to be together, even if it's her taking comfort from him and using him to feel better. Yeah that sounds terrible but that's just what he THINKS ;))

This is a hot NA, we have a pierced dude (in various places photo 1700353446.gif ) with a dirty mouth, so that makes for all kinds of yummy.

What else...

I think I loved the romance best here, especially from Kai's POV photo 836920.gif , him being secretly in love, and then she falls for him too but they are both afraid to admit it...

Why 4 stars? It had too much sex photo 323843.gif I'd like a bit more story to it instead, but all in all it was great reading it :)

Anyway, this is just a wonderful, make-me-feel-good and make-me-feel-hot-and-bothered book, a huge rec for all YA/NA lovers

I'm thrilled to share Rachel and Kai's story with you. This is book three in The Between Breaths Series, but can also be read as a standalone.

"WHISPER TO ME brings the prodigal party girl back home to the boy next door turned friend with (secret) benefits. With this steamy tale of requited lust and chemistry, Lee peels back the layers on two damaged people who want something completely unexpected from each other - something more." --Tammara Webber, NYT Bestselling author of Easy

"Whisper to Me lifts us by the heartstrings and tosses us wildly about. In the end: a triumphantly uplifting novel."--Christina Lauren, NYT, USA Today and International Bestselling authors of the Beautiful Bastard series

"Prepare to fall in love with Kai and Rachel! Whisper to Me sucked me right in, and I was hooked! This is the perfect kind of coming of age romance." --A.L. Jackson, NYT and USA Bestselling Author of Take This Regret and Lost to You

"Whisper to Me is a beautiful love story filled with genuine emotion from beginning to end." -Kim Karr, NYT and USA Today Bestselling author

Some things you might find interesting:

Rachel is a girl who cheated death and how she deals with it might surprise you (it surprised me). Kai is Native American, loves jazz, plays the upright bass, and I'm completely head over heels in love with him. In my cover photo, I picture his shoulder length hair pulled back from his gorgeous face.

3.5-4.0 "You Get Me Stars"

This is finally Rachel's tale! It is the chance to meet the out-going gal with the mysterious past and the scar.

Her life back in her home town is quite different from the life she has portrayed at TSU!

Rachel was the typical HS gal who fell in love young an suffered the worst consequences of a broken heart. Literally shattered in body and soul after an accident, she had one constant in her life...her best friend's older brother Kai.

Kai was the source of comfort and strength for Rachel during her rehabilitation. He never expressed his innermost longings to want to be more to her. When Rachel could walk...she did...to a new life. Both she had Kai spent so much time trying to be something other than what they both truly were. These two characters are immersed in the world of "what other's think." Maybe it is time to just let go...because when they are together, that is exactly what they do! They get each other better than any one else in their lives.

I enjoyed this read better than book 2! I liked that there were two characters with well developed back story...they wanted one another and tried for the sake of everyone else to fight it! But just one night, one opportunity and...

I will say that wowza...Kai is the most patient pleasing man I have ever read! He gives to Rachel and never takes in return! Again, he "gets her."!

Yes there was a lot of mixed communication and the angst is not high. The drama is pretty lame in typical HS bullsh**, but overall the character connection was good. In the end Kai and Rachel were more than friends, they were each other's "it".

Whisper to Me was a romance of unrequited love, filled with longing and emotion.

Rachel is back in her hometown for the summer where the past she tries to forget through mindless hookups and a carefree façade comes slamming back to her. None of her friends from college know that Rachel was in an accident that almost killed her requiring months of rehab or that her boyfriend, Miles, turned his back on her and left when Rachel needed him most. The only people who stuck with her were parents, and her two best friends: Dakota and Kai. Dakota was the unrelenting cheerleader but Kai was the tender soul who brushed away her tears and held her when despair threatened to consume her. Even with her heart in shreds over Miles, Rachel wasn’t oblivious to Kai’s appeal. And now that she’s back, he stirs up a mix of emotions: intense desire, feeling of home, and fear.

Kai never had a shortage of girls after him with his looks, and the fact he played in a band. But there’s always only been one girl for Kai: Rachel. When she got hurt he helped nurse her back to health all the while falling a little more in love with her each day, knowing she didn’t feel the same. When Rachel left for college Kai spent his years studying recording and messing around. Now that they’re both back home their relationship has shifted into a powerful, needy attraction.

Rachel and Kai have this magnetic attraction for each other made even more intense from their close bond of friendship. Unfortunately, both think their draw is only physical, and they’re insecure about letting on how deeply they really feel.

But this was a different kind of weakness that I never would have guessed I would witness. She’d hoped I found her desirable. Me. The boy who she didn’t even fucking realize loved her. The one who already worshiped her, body and soul.

I really felt for Rachel. The last book she came off as a no-strings-attached kind of girl, just looking for the next random guy to have fun with, but we get the full story behind her behavior here. Returning home brings some clarity and closure to Rachel and she realizes she no longer wants to live a lie or keep others at arm’s length.

This romance was filled with so much tortured longing I felt my chest tighten up and ache in places! I just wanted Kai and Rachel to fess up and let each other in all the way. Kai was protective and tender, but he could be a dirty talker, too, and they had some crazy hot encounters! Lusty scenes full of sexual tension.

Christina Lee wrote a steamy romance full of emotions that will tug at your heart!

I’m not sure who the next book, Promise Me This, will center on, but I’m thinking maybe Dakota and Shane? I guess we’ll see.

This book! Wow. Let me just say, Kai brings HOT to a whole new level.

Aside from the scorching chemistry between Kai and Rachel, this book also deals with intense emotions. Rachel's past is devastatingly real and heart-breaking. And Kai's insecurities over who he is and how he (and others) define him makes him all the more lovable.

WHISPER TO ME is hands down my favorite in the Between Breaths series, and I cannot wait to see what Christina Lee brings to the table with her next work. She is now officially on my auto-buy list!

Sometimes you just need a palette cleanser. A quick, easy read with low angst and a guaranteed happy ending. And that's what this was. Finished it within two days, I was entertained, but it probably won't prove very memorable in another month. There was nothing wrong with it. In fact, I appreciated that the author wrote a female character that was (somewhat) unapologetic for liking to sleep with guys. And she (mostly) wasn't shamed for that fact either. But beyond that it was a very formulaic, New Adult book. And they mostly all run together after a while. :/

ARC copy provided by Netgalley for an honest review.....

During the summer before she left for college, Rachel's self-centered boyfriend took her out on a friend's motorcycle (without a helmet) and crashed. He walked away with a few scratches and she ended up almost dying with a traumatic brain injury. To add insult to injury (literally), he abandoned her afterwards and took off to his life and college like nothing ever happened. Kai, Rachel's best friend's brother, was her rock during recovery. He stuck with her and ended up falling for her. Once recovered, though, Rachel couldn't stand being in the small town where everybody knew her story and pitied her. She went away to college and kept her past a secret. Kai went to Amsterdan for school and an internship and a recording studio. It's been 3 years and both Rachel and Kai are home. Rachel is only here for the summer before she heads back to school, but Kai is back because of a scandal at the recording studio and won't be headed back. His parents are disappointed and Kai is trying to figure out what to do with his life. Both he and Rachel are living with his sister and Rachel's best friend, Dakota, time being. Everything changes for Rachel with the ex-boyfriend shows up and keeps trying to meet with her. She feels out of control and Kai helps her in the only way she wants.... sexually. He loved Rachel and will do what he can to be there for her, but he has to keep his feelings from her or it will mess up everything. The more Rachel leans on Kai (in and out of the bedroom), the stronger her feelings for him become. He's a known womanizer, though, so she has to keep her feelings from him or it will change everything. What will happen when they both return back to their normal lives? What does the ex want from Rachel now?

First off I need to say that I haven't read any of the other books in the Between Breaths series and I had no issues reading this as a standalone book. It was a little slow for me at the beginning, but it quickly pulled me in. Well...to be clear Kai pulled me in. He fell in love with Rachel while she was in rehab and struggling. Even though he left, he watched out for her and did his best to be her friend. He didn't know what he was doing with his life, but he was always positive about his feelings for her. Swoon worthy qualities in my book. Let's also not forget that he is a bad boy. This guy loves his music, has been in multiple bands and is rocking his piercings! Rachel has worked hard to push her vulnerability away, but struggles with it at times. These 2 coming together was cute and hot. You also get some hints of a budding romance between Dakota and Kai's best friend, Shane, which I am sure will be book #4 in the series.

An emotional, sweet, and wonderful read, Whisper to Me was a fantastic New Adult Romance. I really liked this book. It was a lovely additional to a brilliant series.

Rachel was a lovely heroine. She went through a lot after a motorcycle accident, and she came out stronger than before. She was determined not to let that part of her life keep her down. I really liked her. She was a great character.

Kai was wonderful as well. He was a character who wasn't quite sure of himself. For one, he was confused about what he wanted to do with is future. For another, despite being extremely attractive, he didn't believe that he had something more to offer a girl. Those insecurities made him even sweeter and made him more sympathetic. But, he was also very loyal and protective of his loved ones and, once he set his mind to something, very determined. I thought he was adorable.

The romance was good. On one hand, Rachel and Kai were great together. They had loved each other for a while and they were just a perfect match. Not to mention the sizzling chemistry between them. But, it was so frustrating how they took so long to admit their feelings (to themselves and each other) and even longer to finally decide to make it official. It just got really frustrating, because everyone else saw it, but they couldn't admit it. But, overall, I thought they were a lovely couple.

The plot was well paced and I was kept interested the entire way through. There were a few secrets in store, hiding in the characters' pasts and they added a nice element of unpredictability. I really enjoyed the story and the ending was lovely.

Whisper to Me was a fantastic New Adult romance. I really liked this wonderful book. From the deep emotions, to the surprising secrets, this book was lovely. Romance lovers, this is a book you won't want to miss.

Oh boy, this was just ok for me. Our key characters are Kai and Dakota, brother and sister. Rachel, grew up with Kai and Dakota, and BFF with Dakota.
Three years ago Rachel was in a near death accident with her then boyfriend Miles. He came out of it just fine, and Rachel had to learn how to walk again, work on her speech.. so many obstacles she had to overcome. Miles, being a dickhead teenager, couldn't take the heat and bailed on her. But Kai and Dakota, stayed by her side. Kai was a huge driving force behind her recovery. But during that time, he fell for Rachel. Then we get to the famous "I don't want to ruin our friendship" saying.
After Rachel recovers, she chooses a college far away from her best friend and Kai. The story picks up when Rachel comes home for the summer. Its been 3 years. She rooms with Kai and Dakota.
The story is told in Kai and Rachel's POV. I felt that most of the story is their flirting, but mostly, it was them going back and forth about how much one likes the other. Each chapter they were flirting or pining. I just wanted them to take the next step already or shut up! Back and forth. Back and forth. I honestly got tired of hearing the both of them admit they liked the other, but never actually tell the other until the very end. There is very LOW steam in this book. I would have maybe enjoyed it more if there was more steam, something to hold on to.
Theres one hook up at the very end, then its wrapped up right after. For being in their 20's, for me, it felt more YA. But hey, I'm not expert. There was some closure for her and Miles, the ex- ass hat, but it was kind of slap in the face with an apology, and I didn't quite care for it.
I did not read the 2 previous books, but those couples also make appearances. After reading this book, I will not be reading the previous two. I didn't even highlight anything.

Dear Reader,
If you are reading this review to try to decide if you should one-click it or not, let me start by telling you upfront to go ahead and put that one-click finger to use. I'm 2 days and 1 1/2 books out from finishing this book and I still keep finding myself replaying some of the scenes from the book.
Yes, this book was hot and Kai is really good dirty talker but I would have been just as in love with this book without the sex scenes. I'm not saying they were unnecessary, because, really, when isn't sex necessary? I'm just saying that the story was THAT good.
I could go on and on about how much I <3 Kai and Rachel, because I do, they are awesome, but I think this is just one of those books that you need to experience for yourself.
This book was low on angst, high on heat and heavy on sigh-worthy, jealousy-inducing romance. If you believe in soulmates and love a good friends to lovers story this is for you!!
There are two other books, and one coming soon, in this series that I haven't read but I promise you that I will be one-clicking them very soon!!
Now get off of my blog and go read!

Sincerely,
Jaime

I’d like to announce Christina Lee’s place on my favorite authors shelf. Figuratively, of course. I don’t normally put people on shelves.

Onto Kai an Rachel.

Out of the 3 (Avery, Ella and Rachel) I always considered Rachel to be the Floozy. Avery definitely had her share of flirtations and beyond during her college years. Ella, while stuck with an idiot for a boyfriend out of some distorted (and thankfully fixed) concept that he’s a connection to her brother. And Rachel always was the one to tell them both they needed to live a little, have fun, experience college and pretty much advocated sleeping around. And yes, I’m aware I’m being extreme here.

In comes Christina Lee and weaves a beautiful and emotional background story for Rachel. I’m still boggled as to how Lee managed to change my mind about Rachel. A complete 180. And by the way, that’s not to say I didn’t like Rachel. I think a friend like hers exists in every tight knit group of girlfriends. Or in most, anyway.

In any case, Rachel’s “floozy like” persona is there for one purpose – she’s suppressing who she was pre and post her accident. She’s living life up. She’s breaking free of the mold she had created in her mind about herself.

It makes perfect sense that while on campus we’d never have seen the real Rachel, and for her to come out she has to be around her old friends, around her family. And ho boy, there’s an insane difference between the two Rachels.

While at home we meet Rachel’s best friend growing up and to the point where she went to college. We meet her best friend’s brother *cough* Kai *cough* and we meet Rachel’s ex. All of them, supported by Rachel’s family, move and help grow Rachel’s character from a hiding in plain sight woman and into one that owns herself, her character and her wants.

Rachel’s arc develops gradually, which I loved in this book. Her transformation is real and makes sense. I think I most appreciated about her the process of grieving the person she thought she was when with her ex, prior to her accident. I adored that she learned to appreciate her damaged self during her recovery period. It was like many tiny pieces of a 1000000 piece puzzle just aligned and created the real picture of Rachel. And the glue that made it all happen was Kai.

Kai is a bit of a complex himself. Growing up in the shadow of his perfect sister, he always seemed to be doing the wrong thing, always getting the disappointed looks from his father, always miscommunicating his wishes and aspirations. And always smoking pot.

Returning home after a scandal at work abroad, Kai is back to his old habits, but when he sees Rachel again, things start to shift. Being best friends with her seems to be a lot more challenging now than it has been before he left (and she left for school), yet she appears to be the only one that gets him. And for Rachel he’s making changes in his life, even though I had the feeling at least at the beginning of his process, that those changes weren’t consciously made.

Kai is gorgeous, talented beyond his father’s recognition, but it is masked by his past behavior. What Rachel unknowingly does for him, for the change he’s undergoing throughout the story, is making her vulnerability known, but only to him. Knowing she’s going to be facing two groups of friends that don’t know about the other and know her as two different individuals, Rachel’s only ally is Kai. By feeling the need to be her confidant and release, Kai is gradually changing his ways. In all fairness, he’s probably changing his ways cold turkey, but the story develops in such a way that shows it building slowly, and beautifully.

The culmination of Rachel’s story arc in my opinion was when Rachel reached the point where she’s comfortable being herself with everyone important to her; her family, old and new friends. The culmination of Kai’s, however, is when inspiration strikes and he makes a decision for him, and demands the support he deserves from his family.

Far be it from me to ignore the other couples, though, and I loved the glimpse into their relationships.

Rachel’s old bestie and Kai’s sister, Dakota, has a great role in this story, which I’m not getting into (the review is long enough as it is lol), but I loved how snippy she is at times and how she bluntly points out Rachel college group of friends has got their own lingo (which I picked up on and was mildly annoyed with) but later on got what Lee was doing. Also, I’m DYING to get her story with Shane, Kai’s best friend. It’s going to be hawt. That’s my bet.

I loved this story. I loved the characters and the world Christina Lee created for them. I loved the plot and the struggles, the incredible tension and the way everything came together towards the end of the story. And I loved the ending.

You thought I’d forget, didn’t you? I didn’t forget. I have the perfect #hashtag for Kai: #KAILICIOUS

This is book three in Lee's Between Breaths series, and I remember reading book 1 and I remember liking Lee's writing style and the story overall, so when the chance to read this book came up, I jumped at it, and I am so glad I did. For me, I felt Whisper to Me blew All of You out of the water, okay that may be an overstatement, but I absolutely loved this book and if Lee keeps writing like this then she has a fan for life.

Lee's first book, All of You, was a really good debut novel in my opinion, and I love reading authors as they evolve, the writing almost always gets better, and Lee proved that to be true with Whisper to Me. I feel in love with this book, hook, line, and sinker. I loved the characters, I loved the baggage that they carried, I loved her descriptions, I loved the setting, I loved the family dynamics that Lee set up, the whole thing just worked for me.

So character wise I loved Kai in this book, I can't really put a finger on why I liked him so much in the book. I liked his personality so much, he was there for Rachel when no one else really understood her or pitied her, he just accepted her. He also has that kind of cool, loner guy vibe, which I've always been a fan of. I normally don't find any description of a guy wearing skinny jeans as attractive, but it worked for him.

Rachel has a lot of stuff she was trying to overcome, she had this terrible event happen to her in high school and then decided when she went away to college to just become someone else. When these two worlds start collide over the summer, she finally has to face the past. I like her dynamic with Kai too. They have this great sexual chemistry, and yet the two of them kind of fight it a lot, and neither one of them really knows how to tell the other one how they really feel about each other, it's fun watching them kind of dance around the whole thing (especially since they are keeping it secret from everyone, including Kai's sister who also happens to be Rachel's best friend).

There are a lot of secondary people in this book that play a big role in Rachel and Kai's life. Kai's family is a great in this book, I love the teasing dynamic between Kai and his sister Dakota. And I also thought the whole relationship between Kai and his parents was fantastic, his dad constantly wanting Kai to get his life together and trying to be stern, while his mother being the more understand force for Kai. The whole family dynamic just read as authentic to me, which is always impressive to me.

I think one of my favorite things about this book was just the quality of the writing. The book switches between Rachel and Kai's POVs and I thought Lee did a great job helping the reader to get into the character's head and motivation, the quality of the writing made it so easy for me to really identify with the characters and be invested in them and their futures. Also the romantic/sex scenes in the book were written really well, some people aren't all that great at it, but Lee is really good.

Overall I would hands down recommend this book to anyone who likes romance or who likes the new adult genre. It's a fantastic read, and I seriously can't wait to read the next book that Lee writes, she definitely got herself a fan with this book.

Whisper to Me is Rachel and Kai's story. I've told you I love friends to lovers stories, right? I do. So much. And Rachel and Kai just might be one of my new favorite bookish couples. They're complicated, but perfect together.

Rachel was in a horrible motorcycle accident three years ago. Her boyfriend was driving during the accident. While she was dealing with the after effects of brain surgery and going through physical therapy, he left her. It broke her. Since then, she's been all about the meaningless hookups to get her mind off of the past. She uses guy after guy to forget and numb the pain. She's back in her hometown for the summer and Kai, her best friend's brother and the object of her crush for many, many years is back too. She's never quite forgiven him for abandoning her to go intern in Amsterdam, but she can't help but feel a pull to him.

Kai is a super swoony book boyfriend for sure. He's a sexy and tattooed musician with pierced nipples (and that's not all!) and a reputation for being a major player, but there was so, so much more to him than that. He was a total sweetheart. Learning about how he had been there for Rachel after the accident she was in years ago made me melt and he won my heart immediately. Oh, and the dirty talk? Holy crap. I was left blushing and fanning myself more than once.

The chemistry between Rachel and Kai was undeniable. From the first night they lay eyes on each other and realize their normally friendly feelings have shifted into something more, I was as hooked on them as they were on each other. When Kai helps Rachel work out her emotions about Miles and tells her to find him the next time she needs to escape, I swooned... and blushed a little. Because I had the luxury of being in both Rachel and Kai's heads, I knew there was always more to them and their feelings for each other than lust, but I enjoyed watching them figure it out each others feelings for themselves. It was a bit of a bumpy ride, but it was one I was happy to be on with them. And the added bonus of updates from Avery and Bennett (!!!) and Ella and Quinn made it even better.

I have so much love for this series. Each of the books has been sweet and super sexy with unforgettable characters and a story that's just a little more than just a romance. Each of the books has dipped into tough subjects and done so in a way that was relatable and easy to understand. Whisper to Me was no exception. Part second chance story, part friendship to love, It had plenty of feels and emotions, but without being overwhelming or too angsty. I can't wait to see which character the next book in the series, Promise Me This, follows.

I have such a crush on Kai!

This is the third book in the Between Breaths series, but the first one I've read. In no way do I feel like I was missing out by not having read the first two. I can't wait to get my hands on them if they are anything like this book.

Rachel has been living a double life in some ways. Away at college, she is the carefree girl that is just looking to have a good time. Back at home she can't be herself because of the pity she sees in everyone's eyes. She was in a tragic motorcycle accident three years ago, that resulted in a brain injury and months of rehab. Kai, her best friend Dakota's brother, was the one to take care of her and support her in the hospital. They grew up together and have always had a solid friendship. But they haven't spoken since she left for school.
"I'm doing what I do well," he said, tugging my nearer. "Taking care of my Turtle."
Rachel is back from college for the summer and staying with Dakota and Kai. Kai is somewhat of a slacker. He's just moved back from Amsterdam and has no direction in life. He loves music but hasn't figured out how to translate that into a career. He's gorgeous, pierced and always has a steady stream of girls. But only one girl has captured his eye this summer. When Kai and Rachel can't fight their feeling for one another anymore....the results are HOT!
"Rachel was like a shock of red in a dreary sea of gray."
The intensity between Kai and Rachel was what made this story so AMAZING. I just couldn't put it down. I had to know if they were going to end up together. The dual POV is great too! I highly recommend this book.

As I read the first two books in this series, I had not given Avery & Ella's friend Rachel much consideration. In fact I would almost say that I didn't like her much. But in Whisper to Me, Christina Lee has constructed a very compelling backstory for Rachel that at times takes your breath away. You come away knowing her so much better and rooting for her in every way. She is a kick ass heroine who has faced down challenges in her life and just wants to be some form of who she thinks she should be.

We are also introduced to Kai, who is Rachel's childhood friend and champion. I adored Kai from the first because you could simply feel every bit of his emotions that were expressed through his music, words or deeds. He is Rachel's sponge -- he hears her every thought and gives her counsel. He is not perfect by any stretch and to his parents' chagrin does not appear to be growing up as fast as they would like. But he's got to find the space to figure things out for himself.

I loved this story because these two characters knew each other inside out -- they knew the other's flaws and accepted them still. Their friendship was unconditional in that respect. Their sexual chemistry is just stratospheric. (Note to self -- Christina Lee writes incredibly hot dirty talk and sex scenes that are the perfect balance that leave the reader wanting more.)

But more than anything, I love the writing. It's cliche, but Christina Lee has a way with words that to me is poetic. She can describe a scene, character or thought and it's never weighted down. It's organic and more importantly, it does the job of creating the image for the reader.

I loved this book and cannot wait to read what comes next from this magical writer.

This is the third book in the Between Breaths series and can be read as a stand alone. I know that for sure because it's the first book of the series I read and I was not lost even once! It's an emotional and touching read that I'm sure many fans of the genre will enjoy. A 3.5 rating rounded to a solid 4.

Rachel has been through hell and back. She's shut herself off to many things in life, became numb as well. She no longer looks to people for help in any way. Well all except for some minor things from her two lifelong friends Kai and his sister. But with Kai, it's something so much more. If only he would look at her they way her heart and minds desires him to. Them maybe...just maybe...

This was my first time reading from this author and I enjoyed it. She created some awesome characters within an engrossing story. I plan to look into more of her work very soon.

After being so enthralled with Before You Break, I just had to keep reading to find out what Rachel's story was. She was sassy, wild and nearly out of control in the last book and I had a burning need to know what brought her to this point. So as soon as I had the chance I grabbed up this book and settled in to submerge myself with this author's storytelling again.

The story opens with Rachel coming home for the summer for the longest visit she has been on since she left for college three years before. Her mom needs her help with her business and Rachel wants to be there for her after all the times her mom was there for Rachel through the motorcycle accident, the traumatic brain injury that brought on surgery and extensive physical therapy, and her boyfriend deserting her about the time her parents divorced. Three years later and coming home brings her to the realization that the person she was at college- the wild carefree love em and leave em girl was little more than a front for not dealing with anything. She thought she was just being tough, but it was really just a distancing act. The realization comes when she moves in with her best friend, Dakota. If Dakota knew the way she was at college, she would be so disappointed in Rachel, but it was also the fact that Rachel lied keeping her college life with friends and her home life separate. Everything has come to a head from the lies about who the real Rachel is, to the return of her high school crush, Kai, Dakota's bad boy brother, and then there is the return of her ex who seems to want to rekindle what they had. Rachel is in near crisis as it all hits her, but the anchor in her storm is Kai. Kai is ever supportive and doesn't judge. He gives her what she needs or at least what she thinks she needs.

Kai fell for Rachel when he saw the strong, courageous girl who refused to give up as she worked through each painful and difficult step of recovery from her brain injury. He kept his feelings to himself then because she had just lost her boyfriend and her parents were divorcing. He tried to move on, but seeing her again makes it perfectly clear that he's still hung up on Rachel. However, Rachel sees him only as a friend and someone she can use to get over her ex and work through her issues. In the meantime, Kai knows he has screwed up many times and just been drifting so he determines to stay clean of the weed and work hard at his dad's tribal casino to prove himself. He loves making music and is fascinated even by working the sound boards to help others make music. If only it paid. Kai and Rachel spend more and more time together letting off steam in secret. He knows it won't lead anywhere. He wants her so bad and has to stand by and watch first her ex and then another guy move in. He is too afraid of losing her friendship if he shares his feelings and she rejects them.

Alright, this one went off in a very different direction in plotting and tone from the one before it and that's not a bad thing. I like how the story reflected the uniqueness of this couple compared to the others before it. Rachel has made one unholy mess of things and this is sort of her redemption story.

I confess she was a bit shallow for me before and I was curious if the author would give me something to engage my sympathies more. She definitely did that. Any one of the things that happened to Rachel that time just before she went off to college were tough things, but the fact that they were strung altogether was enough to knock anyone off their foundation. This was a hard one for me to read because Rachel was in an unhealthy place for most of the book. Kai might have allowed it, but she was using him instead of dealing with her stuff. I applauded him when he finally spoke his mind. Rachel never saw what she was doing that way and it made her mad, but between what he said and her clearing the air of her lies to her friends, that is when she started to change and really heal. Kai wanted her so badly that he was enabling instead of empowering. Truthfully, Kai's addictions were his enablers. Then they just obscured. He wanted to forget his feelings and desire for Rachel, but the weed and sex also made him lose his music and his sense of self. So the story was a good piece about two people helping to heal each other and then finally getting a chance at romance.

When I look back over this, I was less interested in the romance than I usually am with a story. And I didn't miss it. The passion and romance was there, but it was muted while character development took place. I love a good friends to lovers romance and that's what this was, but it was more authentic in the essence of that then some stories that follow this formula. One of the barriers to the romance here was exactly because these two were such strong friends. The reader and their friends see how awesome they are together and the potential for more, but they just see a tight friendship that they are so desperate not to lose that they won't reach for more. Now that being said, they are horny college age types so they get up to some hot passion too. Kai just oozes sexuality between his physical image that includes his piercings and attitude which drives Rachel wild, but Rachel is pretty confident in the bedroom too. She is more than a match for Kai's dirty talk and demands. Their past experiences have made them more equals in experience which was something else I appreciate since its usually hard for me to buy into the unbalanced relationships when one has tons of experience and the other has nearly none. I liked that Kai put on the breaks a few times because he recognized what was happening with Rachel and he was determined to hold back some things because he wanted it to be meaningful.

In the end, this is a challenging story in many ways, but very satisfying. It was also good to get a peek-in with the two previous couples. Squee for Avery's news!

I recommend this series as one of the best NA Contemporary Romances series out there in my opinion. It's a good idea to read these in order because the heroines are all introduced in the first book and their characters are revealed as you go, but they can also easily be read as standalones.

My thanks to Penguin Group and Net Galley for the opportunity to read this book in exchange for an honest review.

I wanted to read this one because I have enjoyed the characters and romance in the other companion novels, and I liked the sound of this and figured why not.
I like the characters of Kai and Rachel. I find out a lot more about Rachel and discover (not surprisingly) that she has gone through a lot more than I would ever have imagined, and is put in a weird situation coming back home. She feels like the other people from her high school just view her as "that" kid, the one who was in the wreck and in the hospital. Weak, sick, not around a lot. But Rachel has grown up a lot and she is stronger than they'd ever imagine. Kai and Rachel were childhood friends because Rachel's best friend Dakota is Kai's sister. They have that history together, getting in trouble, him by her side through physical therapy and recovery, knowing her broken heart when Miles, the kid who was her boyfriend and in the wreck with her, broke up with her while she was recovering. So, he knows her inside and out, and we find out, he's been attracted to her for some time.
So when Rachel is home helping her mom for the summer, and crashes at Dakota's, guess who else is back from abroad (we find out he's been in some trouble, hello bad boy with the soft spot, I love you), and staying in the same apartment. Yep, Kai. I loved getting his perspective and see how he is trying to get his life together, and figure out how he can do what he loves, music, and still make a living instead of getting in trouble and puttering around like he has for a while. He knows that a lot is at stake and all eyes are on him and watching and he fears hoping that he'll fail and fall again.
I loved their chemistry. Kai knows how Rachel has dealt with stress--random hook ups, but he can't stand to see that. So, after coming home with her after a confrontation with Miles, they end up getting a little physical and he makes the offer to help her out instead of her finding random guys. Wow, turn up the heat and watch me swoon.
But, I love that the issue is brought up that they don't want to ruin the years invested in their strong friendship and bond, but both were too eager, not thinking enough and so attracted to each other, that they just acted and saw how everything would settle. The friends to lovers is something that I love to read about and I think that she did it well here.
There was so much tension, and really so much at stake, or so they thought when their feelings were deeper than what they thought the others' was. But it all came together beautifully, even if they had some hard things to face before it got there for them. They had some roadblocks and personal issues to deal with on both sides before they could really give things a shot.
I did like the aspect of friendship in these books outside of the smoking romance. How Avery, and Rachel are with one another, and Rachel and Dakota's friendship has been there forever. I like that they aren't perfect, and that although the lies caught up with her, that she was finally open with her two sets of friends from two different parts of herself. The forgiveness and acceptance was wonderful there, and the secondary characters, previously or maybe one day main characters that keep these stories going and you know there is more going on adds a whole other layer to the plot.
The family relationships in this one are great to read about as well. Rachel is home to help her mom with her business and we get a glimpse of how supportive, loving and concerned her mom is for her and how Rachel loves her back and respects her. As far as Kai, we get the whole big brother protector even though he's messed up, and the shaky dynamics between him and his father. I know that Kai didn't want to be a disappointment, and as a parent I know that had to be hard to watch your kid make bad decisions and life choices that you wouldn't have made for them. But I do like how they are there for him at the end of the day and help him the best they can.
The ending is amazing, and I love how everything falls into place. The culmination of their hot make out sessions leading to more, the tension, and the love that built for years between them all managed to work itself out and give them a HEA as well as hints at what their bright futures will look like together.

Bottom Line: Steamy book about friends turned into lovers.

I’m going to say this now just in case (for some weird reason) you don’t read the rest of my review… If you haven’t read any of Christina’s books, you’re really missing out! I love the cleanliness of her writing style, the beauty of her storytelling, and her ability to pull you in from the very beginning. I love, LOVE her books!

Kai had loved Rachel for years. He watched the girl he loved change the true her for someone else and eventually watched her being crushed by that very same person. He then swooped in to take care of her in a friend’s only way, and eventually after high school they both went their separate ways. But the moment he saw her years later, he knew his love for her never died.

He kept tabs on her throughout college. He learned that she liked to use guys for sex. But now that they are back in the same town he is determined to make sure it’s him that she uses. No, he’s not a dick for thinking like that, he loves her and doesn’t want her to be with anyone else but him. Kai has his own issues. Rachel helps him see he doesn’t need to be dependant on his addictions, he can depend on her. They can use each other to make it through the tough times. And it is those times that brought them together and made them realise they belong together.

“The girl I ached for was finally noticing me in the same way… The girl of my fucking dreams”

I loved the slow build of their emotional connection, their hotter than now “secret” hook-ups (doing your best friends older brother without her knowing... scandalous!), all the little glimpses into the past and how it all started between the two of them are what made Kai and Rachel so special and unforgettable. Kai has the right amount of bad boy/protector/nurturer/holy hotness. He also has the piercings in all the right places, which by the way, is one of my new requirements for making it onto my book boyfriends laminated list. He will definitely make your heart skip a beat.

There were so many great scenes in this book, but the bathroom at the casino was one of my favourite hot moments. And the place she found her underwear afterword’s had me smiling. Smooth, Kai, very smooth.

Now the worst parts of these stories is the inevitable break-up. We always know it’s going to happen, and the reasons aren't always the same, but it’s the moment of how they come back together that makes the story. The moment they realise how stupid the reason for leaving was. Because what’s better than being with your one true love? Nothing, that’s what. And you know it’s special even when the people around you know, without you having to say a word. This is the "Are you gonna get the girl?" moment. That moment in the story where Rachel learns exactly when Kai fell in love with her. The moment he knew, the reason he stop being afraid and came back to her to make her see just how great they are together.

"Right in that instant-the second before you reached me? That's when I knew"

This was the best part of the story. The part where that little sob escapes your throat and you hope that there is no one around to witness your tears fall.

This is the third book in the series and my new favourite! You may also like to know that Bennett and Avery from the first book, All of You, make an ultra swoony appearance you won't want to miss!

2.5 Working through it Stars

I enjoy this series, so I was fairly disappointed with this one, especially since this is the third book in the series. I think what didn’t work for me was the lack of storyline. I felt like there was a Heroine and a Hero. The Hero liked the Heroine and wanted a relationship. The Heroine had issues and just wanted to use the Hero. That’s basically the story.

So the plot isn’t so bad, but there wasn’t any meat to back it up.

Rachel had a tragic accident and it left her really messed up. She gave up her life and just wondered around and took three years to kind of recover. Kai and Rachel were friends but the accident kind of changed things. Three years later, Rachel is back and Kai is back from living in Europe.

I didn’t really like Rachel, even though I liked her history. I love a damsel in distress kind of Heroine and I felt for her. She had a tragic accident and her life got turn upside down, but when she came back, she was just a tad too guarded for my taste. She keeps on pushing Kai away and I got really fed up.

Kai as a Hero is okay. He’s the “bad” boy who is kind of lost and doesn’t know what he wants to do in life. He smokes pot and is kind of lazy, yeah that’s a real turn on. I like how much he cares for Rachel, in the sense, he has a crazy crush on her and will take what ever he can get, but where’s my alpha Hero? I felt like there was something lacking with Kai.

I wanted more, I wanted more side characters, I wanted more steam, I wanted more drama, I wanted something. It took quite a bit for me to get into towards the middle. Rachel and Kai did have some outings, but there was so much “chase” on Kai’s part, I was getting really tired. Every time Kai gets anywhere, Rachel pulls away.

This may work for some readers if you like the chase. I’m not giving up on this series just yet, because I liked the first two. I was just consider this a random fluke.

Whisper to Me by Christina Lee surpassed any expectations I had for the New Adult genre. I instantly fell in love with her characters and Christina Lee is now on my list of all-time favorite authors.

When I first started reading Whisper to Me, I didn't realize it was the third book in the Between Breaths series but it can definitely be read as a standalone. Now, I just have some more books by Christina Lee that are readily available to put on my TBR pile! I am madly in love with this book, this series and this author. Lee gives the reader exactly what they expect from a New Adult book; there is a steamy romance, tough decisions, heartache and redemption, and relatable characters. I was blown away!

First, the sexual tension between Kai and Rachel was off the charts. The pages were practically sizzling in my hand and when things go down, Lee delivers. The chemistry between Kai and Rachel left me panting and ready for more. Lee has this amazing ability to give the reader a little taste, letting the reader fully savor it before pulling back, leaving the reader breathless. Plus, the writing seemed effortless and the responses from each character seemed genuine. This is a story that you can truly get lost in.

The story also possesses a different kind of tension -- a resistance of both characters to fall in love. It was both heartwarming and heartbreaking the way both Kai and Rachel tried to deny their feelings and falling into the trap of assuming the other felt differently or had different intentions. It made for a suspenseful romance, leaving the reader anticipating the next move.

I also enjoyed the growth of both characters. Kai finds himself and decides what he wants to do with his life and Rachel finally gets closure from her accident. It's another beautiful thing about the New Adult genre; the growth of each character during those critical college years. I love, love, loved this book! It was romantic and sexy, both fun and serious. I would highly recommend this to anyone who enjoys New Adult or steamy romances. Whisper to Me will be released on May 20, 2014.

3.5 stars

So the first thing I should admit is that I did not know this was part of a series. When I was scrolling through the Net Galley titles, the blurb for this book was so good, I had to take a shot at getting approved to read this. I love second chance love stories, or best friend turned love stories and this seemed almost like that (minus the ex, groveling for her forgiveness). I started it as soon as I was approved for it.

This is where maybe reading the first two books might have helped, I’m not sure. The beginning was a little slow and confusing for me. I’m not sure how much Rachel is in the first two books, but I just felt like I couldn’t connect with her at first.

Kai on the other hand, I loved from the beginning…and that is what kept me reading. I often feel like something just isn’t quite right when I read male POV’s in stories. To be honest, I don’t typically love dual POV books but in the beginning for me it was definitely the saving grace and what kept me going.

About midway through, the story picked up for me and I couldn’t wait to see how it would all unfold. I felt her pain from her accident. Her suffering through not understanding what happened with her ex and the comfort she felt with her best friend Kai…well as long as her other best friend, Kai’s sister, wasn’t there.

I truly enjoyed the secondary characters who made appearances in this book (the characters from the previous two books) as well as Kai’s best friend Shane. I can’t say I loved Dakota…but that’s just my personal opinion.

So I’m sure you are wondering, why…if the books picked up half way and I felt connected to it, I still only gave it 3.5 stars and that would be the slow beginning combined with what I felt like was a rushed ending. I needed a little more. I felt like I had been on this journey and I needed something, one more chapter, an epilogue…something to let me know it had all been worth it…

Maybe there will be another book?

With each book in this series my love for each story told has grown. Whisper to Me by Christina Lee is hands down my favorite so far. The story captured and held my attention from beginning to end. It’s well written, fast paced, has a to die for book boyfriend, a kickass heroine, and a perfect romance story.
