This is the first of a series of about half a dozen short books which teach the techniques of hypnosis.
They're very to the point and this first one does a great job. It starts by defining what hypnosis actually is, which will probably come as a surprise 90%+ of people. I've some familiarity with a range of trance states, but it was still surprising to see the actual definition and explanation, which actually makes perfect sense when you consider it.
This first book is focused upon the basic techniques of inducing a hypnotic state and deepening it (and coming out of it again, of course!) It covers such things as tone of voice, embedded commands, word patterns, ambiguity, and many other tricks of the trade.
So I know what you’re thinking and the deep skepticism with which you’re viewing this review but I actually picked this easy read up for work - I have to do a lot of hypnotic talking prior to chemically inducing “hypnosis” as part of accomplishing safe, successful anesthesia, and so a review of principles of communication for that couple of minutes before the drugs work seemed actually quite useful.
What an interesting book! *Grins, hugely* It truly made me rethink the concept of hypnosis, explaining some of the science behind what I used to think of as "Hogwash". The techniques it gives to engage the act itself are plausible, in-depth, and are made complete by a certain...wry humor the author seems to have. : D Would definitely recommend to any wishing to learn more about this topic!
Oh, it's not perfect, of course- the occasional spelling error sometimes distracts from reading- but overall it's an informative book and pleasant to peruse.
Could use an editor. Definitely written to generate passive income for the author. Information presented in the book will not be new to anyone who's familiar with the concepts of NLP/Erickson hypnosis/hypnotherapy, heck, maybe, even certain areas of pop-psych. I only gave it 2 stars instead of 1 because the educational part is actually consistent with the theory of hypnosis and the practice of hypnotic trance induction, thus no BS tricks made up by the author. That, and for quite a few ethical disclaimers sprinkled throughout this short read.
This is one of those self-published pamphlets passing off as educated literature in an effort to generate a passive income for the writer. It's very short, mostly double and triple spaced lines with little substantive material except plenty of promises for good information if you buy book two! Gee, how did the author know when he wrote this there was going to be so much good information in a book that didn't exist yet?
This is the first book in a popular eBook series on hypnosis. The series is written by an anonymous hypnotist and neuro-linguistic programming (NLP) practitioner from London. As the first book, it addresses the basics of hypnotic induction, including background about what a hypnotic trance is and how it’s achieved, as well as fundamentals of voice and word choice that can influence the hypnotist’s effectiveness. The book also introduces “convincers” and “deepeners,” practices that help get the subject in the right state of mind for hypnosis and which take them deeper into trance, respectively. [Though, the author argues that the former aren’t really necessary.]
This short book consists of 29 chapters and 5 appendices. The “chapters” are as short as a single paragraph and lay out the concepts, and the appendices are scripts for hypnotic induction or trance deepening. This is a short book, and some have complained that it reads more like a detailed outline than a book. While it’s true that it’s a “just the facts” kind of format, many will find that preferable, depending upon how one likes to take in information. As long as you’re not expecting a lot of narrative examples, you may find it’s just what you are seeking. It’s written in a conversational style as if the author were telling one the information in person.
Given the controversial title, a reasonable question to ask is whether the book is practical or a lot of pie-in-the-sky ramblings by someone who doesn’t know what they are talking about. What’s the controversy? While there are many hypnotists and would-be hypnotists who claim that they can induce a hypnotic trance in anyone, regardless of the individual or the situation, the science suggests that there is continuum of degrees of hypnotizability. The distribution along this continuum follows a bell curve. What’s this mean? Almost everyone can be hypnotized to some degree, but at one tail there are people who are extremely suggestible – however, at the other end there are people who just can’t be induced. Because there are so many Hollywood misconceptions (see: “Now You See Me”) and hypnosis related fantasy and fiction, it’s not surprising that there are a lot of wrong ideas out there. [I should point out that everyone probably achieves a trance state at some point organically, but some people seem unable to be induced into that state because of anxiety, resistance, or otherwise.] Having said all that, it seemed that the author knew of what he wrote and was quite open about the myths, misconceptions, and limitations.
Later titles in this series address such topics as the details of language for hypnosis, escaping cultural hypnosis, applications for anxiety reduction, uses for combating addiction, as well as the more bizarre and arcane side of the subject.
I’d recommend this book for anyone looking for a primer on hypnosis. I was not bothered by the sparse approach. It’s quick and readable, and seemed to offer well reasoned approach to hypnotism.
I haven't finished yet, but I like the authors brutal truth. Straightforward and no fluff. I have to commend the Rougue for taking about taking an individual to a past unpleasant feeling or trauma. It's so dangerous. A while back, some guy online was offering a free group session, and I hopped on to see what he was about. I'm a certified hypnotherapist and energy worker and like to see what others are doing. During the process, he took the listeners down a path to their death so they could experience regret and die with all their mistakes and failures. The point was to then return them to the start of the path again and do all the right things. I was furious and contacted him to tell him. No response, of course. Don't give your mind to just anyone. It's bad enough technology, media and culture screwed with our minds, don't let some clown take you down a path of gloom. I'm still mad, as I recall the story. The Rogue Hypnotist knows his stuff. Read and learn.
I read this as a Christian interested in learning about the practice of hypnotism and how it relates to hypnotherapy and Ericksonian counseling. This book was $0.99, a quick, easy, and practical read by an author who is (for the most part) not creepy. This was obviously self-published and self-edited, and the author sells himself, his abilities, and his methods pretty hard. But as someone curious, this book was a good introduction.
This book was very similar to Speaking Ericksonian - but written with more approachable language and with less specific focus on Milton Erickson.
The book includes some sample scripts for inducing hypnosis, which are useful to go back to if you want to practice.
Other than these scripts and some useful speaking techniques (like using a downward tone for embedded commands) the book isn’t groundbreaking. It does well to quickly and very accessibly introduce the reader to hypnosis.
I received my certification a number of years ago but still like reading and studying what others in the field are doing. Do to the high ratings of this series I decided to give these books a gander. I am not disappointed. Not only tells you what to do but gives you the why of why you are doing it. I have no reservations in recommending this book.
I found this book to be an excellent read for anyone learning hypnosis. Straight and to the point, it gets the essentials right and makes it easy for a newbie to understand.
This book had me feeling very good and confident in hypnosis. I felt I learned a very great deals of strategies to be successful. I would recommend this book. A great read!
It really is the basics, but it's enjoyable. You may consider this a go to book or a refresher. I don't know if you'll buy this book in kindle as I did or hard copy, however either way you've decided wisely.
I have read all ten of these books and I continue to reread them. I have used most of these scripts and they have been very successful. I can't say enough good things about this series.
A great book! I find it very descriptive in explaining things such as "trance", and "hypnosis". And it tells you some techniques for hypnotism as well!
