Jackson Dawson had known only one way of life: ranching. That is, until he went to college in the city. There, he was introduced to a whole new world of people, food, and way of life. He never dared to imagine that he could do or be anything other than a rancher’s son, but with his mother’s words ringing in his ears and his sister’s encouragement, he took a chance. And in the process, found himself and met the woman of his dreams.
Pastry Chef Cass Jamieson’s only desire had been to own a bakery. After a stint in pastry school, she quickly learned that trying to make your dreams come true wasn’t easy. She was dejected when her bakery closed and soon returned to the classroom as a teacher to eager young bakers with the same stars in their eyes that had once been in hers.
So, when the stubborn, determined, and hot as summer in Texas cowboy walked into Cass’s pastry kitchen, it turned her life and libido upside down. When he seeks her out for heated kisses and her thoughts on his cake bakery idea, she gives in to the lust, but gives cautious business advice born of experience, only Jackson didn’t see it that way.
Who will bend first in this battle of wills involving sugar and spice and everything naughty and nice? Come take a ride with The Cupcake Cowboy and find out…
This is the first book I've read by Lissa Matthews and I really enjoyed the smart by-play between the hero and heroine. Jackson's relationship with his dad and their bullheaded confrontation left me frustrated for both of them, but made the resolution all that much sweeter.
This was a pretty good story. I liked both Jackson and Cass and enjoyed their story. Although I've had other books by this author on my to read list, this is the first book I've read by her. I liked this one enough that I'll be keeping those other books on my to read list. :D
Cass is a teacher at a culinary arts school. She's in her 30s and has been doing that for a while. She tried starting her own bakery years before but it didn't work out. She found she lost her passion for a lot of things until she met Jackson. Unfortunately, since he was a student of hers she didn't allow herself to get in to a relationship with him, following the rules instead of her heart. When he asks for her advice about starting his own business, she gives him the safe answer instead of being encouraging, which causes a rift between them.
Jackson was raised on a cattle ranch and was trained to take over since he was a kid. He even got a degree in agriculture. The problem is that no matter how much he loved the ranch, he didn't want to live there all his life. He loved the city and wanted to do something more than running a ranch and he found what he wanted in baking, specializing in cakes, frosting and fillings. He fell for his teacher, Cass, and was always trying to get more out of her than just a student/teacher relationship. When she gives him advice that goes against his dreams, he doesn't take it well and doesn't talk to her for months.
Jackson follows his dreams, quitting culinary school early and opening a food truck in which he sells awesome cupcakes. He does quite well but doesn't go back to see Cass, letting his pride keep him away. Cass has missed Jackson and eventually gets up the courage to go see him, hoping to apologize. This takes more courage than just a simple visit since he's been ignoring her attempts to call and text him. She braves him at his truck and is rebuffed and tries to speak to him again later. Jackson knows he's behaving like an ass towards Cass and realizes that unless he wants to never see her again, he has to make an effort. Their talk ends up turning in to a hot night and spending the next day together. Unfortunately, as they're spending time together they run in to Jackson's father who doesn't approve of his son's choice in careers (thinking baking is for women and that Jackson might be gay). Cass stands up to him in defense of Jackson but it doesn't do much good. As they're going home, Cass encourages Jackson to try working things out with his father. In return, Jackson tries to push her in to revisiting the idea of opening her own bakery again but this freaks Cass out enough that she closes down completely. Both Jackson and Cass are rather stubborn and this leads to them not speaking for a while (thankfully this time it's no for nearly as long).
After some time apart, Jackson ends up being the one to make the effort. He realizes that Cass is right and goes out to see his father, taking him some of his cupcakes to try. His father is more accepting after trying a couple cupcakes and they talk for a while. Jackson also gets his butt around and goes to hunt down Cass, letting her know he wont be pushed out of her life again. They talk things out and Cass admits she wants to start another business but the failure of the last one made it so much harder to try again. Jackson suggests that she work with him on his truck, learning how to run the business side of things and figuring out what she wants to try. They work together for a while (nights and weekends while she keeps her day job of teaching) and they also keep seeing each other and falling for each other more and more as time goes by. Cass comes up with what she wants to do and with the help of Jackson and his sister Sam, she comes up with a business plan and gets a business loan. The story ends with Cass ready to start her new business and Cass and Jackson pretty solidly together and starting their HEA.
I really enjoyed this story. Jackson and Cass are both flawed but yet likable characters that I couldn't help rooting for them from the beginning. There were a few editing mistakes but not bad enough to mess up the story. There seemed to be a setup for Sam (Jackson's sister) having the next book and I hope so because I really liked her character. I'd recommend this book. :D
Cupcake, cupcake, icing, cupcake…yeah, I keep repeating these words over and over as I am drunk on this book. Nope, I really didn’t drink a thing while reading this one, but their cupcakes seemed so real, I am still feeling the effects.
Food trucks rejoice! You now have a romance around them, but not in them…well the romance takes place outside of the truck as it is a working place. But it is also the leaping off point for this story of two people attracted to each other but circumstances keep putting road blocks in their way.
Jackson is The Cupcake Cowboy. Growing up on a ranch made him a cowboy and taught him a hard work ethic. When away at college, he completes his degree but falls in love with the city. His sister suggests he enter culinary school and wham! He meets his first teacher, Cass. While Jackson excels at cakes and cupcakes, he utterly fails at any other kind of pastry. Some kisses between classes excite the two, but Cass keeps him at arms length. After two years of school, he comes up with the idea of The Cupcake Cowboy food truck and presents his idea to Cass, who shoots him down.
Now Cass is trying to make amends when she sees the success Jackson has made out of his business. It doesn’t hurt he isn’t her student anymore and no conflict of interest. She sticks to her own cowgirl guns to apologize even when he gives her the cold shoulder. She even goes in for a second time at his house he shares with his sister. Then all bets are off as the two get hot and stick all on their own.
The story continues on with why Cass teaches, her hopes and dreams in a bucket. We learn more about Jackson’s relationship with his father. Throw all of this together and these two lovers have uphill battles to fight through the entire story.
We also get some insight into the next book in the series, The Sticky Cowgirl, which is based on Jackson’s little sister, Samantha.
While no smex happened on the truck, you get to see Jackson devote his time to making his business work. It isn’t easy and it was fun watching him find talent to help him in unlikely places. Oh, oh, oh, and I want his cupcakes! Does that sound dirty, because I really mean cupcakes an not his cock. Like cherry coke with whiskey, or rum or bourbon. Not to mention just interesting ones with coconut, red velvet, blue velvet and all kinds of velvet!
There is lots of sex…oh, my yes, and talk of kinky sex, oh oh oh, and even some swats on the tush here and there, oh, my! It will leave you gasping, panting and wanting to smoke a… well eat a cupcake instead!
What is your favorite flavor of cupcake? Would you love date a man who owned a cupcake food truck? Would taste testing be a requirement?
Lissa Matthews has decided to dip her finger into the self-publishing world with her first book The Cupcake Cowboy in the Lone Star Sweets series. Any cowboy that wants to put on an apron and whip up a batch of frosting then lick it off is awesome in my book! That’s exactly what Ms. Matthews’ created in this fun sexy read.
I have to say that Lissa Matthews’ knows how to create delicious cupcakes as well as a cowboy that makes them. Jackson Dawson is that cowboy, headstrong and determined when he wants something he goes after it. Although his legacy is the Double J ranch his heart is in baking and let me tell you he can make up some mighty sweet cupcakes. When Jackson falls for his pastry chef the lines become blurred, even more so when he decides to open his own bakery.
Cass Jamieson has rules and boundaries for a reason and when she crosses them she knows a lot is at stake what she doesn’t count on is facing her past and her fears, even if now she doesn’t have to do it alone.
The cast of secondary characters definitely added to the book they strong, likeable and only made you want to know more about them. Samantha, Jackson’s sister, is smart, sassy and full of attitude! She takes no crap and I can’t wait to read her story next.
I have to point out that as with some self-published books unfortunately there were formatting and editing mishaps that a little cleaning would fix but hey it didn’t detour from the story for me. I think Lissa Matthews has started a fun series if you like crème filling, frosting and sticky buns then you have found a real treat here.
Cassandra Jamieson knew she needed to apologize to Jackson Dawson. Being so attracted to him while she was his teacher, never mind being older. She shot his dream down but she was so wrong and she knew it. His food truck The Cupcake Cowboy was a success, being told to forget his dream till he had more experience made Jackson all the more determined to prove Cass wrong. Wanting Cass for his own and her shooting him down about broke his heart. He has never had feelings like that for any women. When his second chance comes along, he needs to prove to her that they can work out and it will be a good thing.
Got to love a cupcake baking cowboy. Besides being sexy and sweet Jackson knew what he wanted. Why does he keep letting her walk away. Cass comes off as meek at first. As her story emerges you find yourself seeing her in a better light. She had a dream that fell apart and knw she is afraid to put herself out there again. So instead of talking to Jackson she tends to run. When Jackson's sister Samantha steps in she has a plan to push the two back together. Wonderful cast of characters. Each are unique and can't wait to get to know them in the series. I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Jackson is a sexy, hard-headed cowboy who can bake cupcakes like an angel. Jackson's relationship with his father is stained because his father just does not understand why Jackson choose this direction. Can they heal their relationship? When Jackson turns on the sexy grin what girl can survive that?
Cass is a sweet character a pastry chef, a teacher with a heart that needs healed and a confidence that needs repair. Cass knows she was tough on Jackson but the one thing she could not handle is seeing him go through what she did. Can Cass mend the fences with one delicious cowboy that stars in her fantasies?
I enjoyed seeing the different layers Ms. Matthews gave this hero and heroine, to push each other on issues that they are both afraid to examine. It's obvious Jackson and Cass are extremely H.O.T for each other but will the past and present issues cloud the way to them being more than friends? Sweets, Cowboys, and Lots of Cupcake Fun! This was definitely my kind of book!
Jackson, The Cupcake Cowboy, has taken on a life of his own. He has defied his father and forged his own path and is use to going after what he wants. That is until what he wants is out of reach.
Cassandra "Cass" Jamieson lives by the rules and keeps those rules set in order to keep herself safe and unharmed. She also has to know the boundaries of her profession.
Jackson and Cass were two people who were faced with many obstacles in this story. The obstacles were blended together within the story... Student-Teacher relationship. Age difference, while I am not assumming the diffence is huge, it is never confirmed. Parent issues. Business issues. Family.
And even though all of that was going on, the story came together and it was wrapped up very well. Jackson and Cass were able to oversome each obstacle and the things that required work, were given time. It was a perfect start to the series and Jackson and Cass became the perfect foundation to keep the series together.
I received this book for an honest review. Jackson has gone down a path no one expected instead of taking over the family ranch this tough and sexy cowboy has decided to follow his passion instead....cupcakes. When his sexy and stubborn pastry teacher that he can't help but have feelings for warns him from taking the plunge he walks away from her determined to prove her and everyone else they are wrong. Cass is caught between her morals and this sexy cowboy she can't get enough of can they both find a way to have what they want and still have each other? This was a fun quick read that was as sweet as Jackson's frosting and as hot as the oven needed to bake the cupcakes. Jackson is a strong alpha male who knows what he wants and isn't afraid to take it. Cass is sweet but enough of a spitfire to go toe to toe with Jackson and not back down. This book was well written and the kind of HEA love story that puts a smile on your face. It is a standalone and definitely worth a one-click.
I received this book in exchange for an honest review. Holy sweetness! "And it was all thanks to a little bit of decadence called a cupcake." Decadence is right! Hot, hot, hot sex. Great confrontations and resolutions to problems. Fantastic dialogue and complex intriguing characters. Jackson is the food truck cupcake cowboy that every woman wants in their bed. Not only can he cook, but he has sex like it is the last time on earth. Cassie is the failed baker relying on her skills to teach and afraid to take a chance. Thank goodness Jacks came along and broke down those barriers. Read on to see what happens. Will Jacks be able to suck up his pride and make things right with his rancher father? Will Cassie take a chance on Jacks and maybe on getting her own bakery? Will they be able to overcome the barriers in their relationship? Enjoy!

I did enjoy this story and it was well written.
For the length of the story, the writer did a good job on character development and moving the story along. However the conflict resolved fairly quickly. But again this is to be expected from a novella.
Jackson is a great character. Certainly a worthy book boyfriend. I also like Cass and how confident she was in her own skin.
I also liked that the story didn't dwell too much on how big she was. Although, I did feel that her "curves" were mentioned a little too much considering that she was never described with any detail. All I know is that she has blue eyes.
The supporting characters were interesting and appear to be getting their own stores. I would be interested in following their stories.
Given to me for an honest review. This is Book 1 of Lone Star Sweets and it is a standalone. Jackson could not bake everything in the baking tract of cooking school. He was only good at cakes, frostings, and fillings. His instructor told him to finish school and get a job in a bakery. Then after a few years he would be ready for his own bakery. He ignored her advice, left school, and opened a mobile bakery with only cupcakes. He has all kinds of cupcakes and is doing well. Cass, the teacher, wants to apologize and tell him that she misses him. Will he accept her apology? Will they get back together?
Great Book! This is a great book; this is the first book in the Lone Star Sweets series by Lissa Matthews. Jackson owns the cupcake truck in downtown San Antonio, Texas everyone calls him the “cupcake cowboy”. He was raised on a cattle ranch but enjoys making cakes and cupcakes. He met Cass in culinary school. They are attracted to each other right away. If you are looking for a great romance then you need to read this book. I am looking forward to reading the next book in this series. A Review copy was provided to me in exchange for a fair and honest review. The free book held no determination on my personal review.
Gorgeous book with a yummy cowboy-turned-cupcake-chef falling in love with his teacher from culinary school. He's stubborn, she is too, and the sparks fly along with the passion. Loved it!
Check out my full and gleaming 5-star review at Silken Sheets & Seduction:
If you want a quick, hot read, that'll make you feel good - like diving into a giant tub of cookie-dough-choc-chip ice cream - this is the book for you :-)
This was a great read! Loved the characters Cass and Jackson. They had depth and feeling that you sympathize with them. Jackson was born and raised on a ranch but wants to cook. Cass is a cooking instructor who tried and failed to run her own business. They both have issues that they have to work through and do so together while falling in love. Its a wonderful read. I didn't want it to end.
I was given this e-book by the publisher for the purpose of an honest review. My conclusions are my own. I was not compensated in any way.

Great read and the first book in her new series. I've read several of her books and enjoyed them all. My first experience with Ms. Matthew's writing was her Blue Jeans and Hard Hat series and I thoroughly enjoyed them all.
This book was too cute! I was able to read in one sitting. I loved all characters. Jackson has to be the sweetest cowboy and Cass was the perfect compliment to his sweet. I can't wait to read others in the series.
I really liked this book. The book starts kind of in the middle of Cass and Jackson's relationship so I would have loved to see the chase. The whole time I was reading the book I wanted cupcakes and I wish there was a cupcake truck somewhere near me.
Who can resist a hot cowboy that bakes? Not me! I really enjoyed the story of Jackson and Cass, the connection they share, the heat and the fun they have together. I'm looking forward to Samantha's story!
