This is a large format introduction to the Anglo-Saxon world, focusing on its spiritual and literary heritage. A large part of the book is dedicated to the Anglo-Saxon Rune Poem, the most complete account of runic writing we have inherited. The runic signs and riddles which accompany each of them (presented in Old English and modern translation) are dramatically brought to life by Brian PartridgeAes evocative drawings.
So, this was the only thing my library had when I searched for runes. I enjoyed the Anglo-Saxon rune poem, but the rest...I alternated between skeptical and disappointed. It didn't seem very academically rigorous, and I didn't like the tone used to discuss non-Germanic cultures, or modern wicca/paganism, which for some reason was always referred to as "heathenism" despite the book not coming from a Christian perspective. I looked up when it was published and was quite surprised that it was in the nineties. I thought it would be much older.
