It's like a small town romance, where everybody knows one everybody else, but in an international thriller. This is kind of what makes the Deep State thesis seem reasonable.

I really did not enjoy this one as much as the 1st two. Rob & Maggie just didn't do it for me. I like Ethan so I look forward to reading his and Julliet's story next.

U.S. Diplomatic Security Agent Maggie Spencer receives an e-mail from an unknown addressee. One of the US' most wanted Nicholas Janssen can be caught if Maggie can get there soon enough. She has her doubts, but Maggie goes to the rendezvous point anyway, and makes the arrest.

U.S. Marshal Rob Dunnemore finds Maggie to learn more about the anonymous tip she received as the man she arrested almost killed him and several other agents in an ambush a few months ago. During his visit a diplomat is murdered, and Maggie and Rob join forces.

This is a novel written as only Carla Neggers could do. It is intense to say the least. It is a fast paced novel that starts rather quickly and never slows down until the dramatic conclusion. Mrs. Neggars' likable characters struggle with the task of coping with their personals lives and trying to keep them separate from work in a way any reader can relate to. Her characters exhibit extraordinary personalities we all wish we had while being able to do a difficult job. She is an amazing writer and her talents are obvious in this novel. A must read!

I missed books 1&2 (my library doesn't have them on audio) but feel like I got enough recap in this one to follow along fairly well.

Narrator is good but she keeps using this raspy smoker's voice for some of her characters, mostly the males. It is slightly annoying.
There are so many characters in this story I almost can not keep them straight while listening. I get confused at times who she is talking about. This is a me problem and nothing to do with the book. I think I'd follow it better reading then listening. I just need to pay better attention. I wasn't expecting this many sub characters in the plot. It does make it interesting though.

The Innkeepers are so paranoid I almost feel like they are up to no good. Starr is so whiny too. She may need a slap to the face to get over her hysteria.

Looking forward to Ethan and Juliet's story.

Not bad ... not bad at all!

Turns out I should have read Night's Landing and Cold Ridge before I read this one, but I didn't know that they tied in together. I may have understood the characters a little better if I had.

I got enough of the sense of Maggie so that I understood her, and although I did feel something between her and Rob, I can't say it was a sizzle.

The plot wasn't bad, but I didn't find the mystery that I'd been expecting after reading the synopsis.

I do need to stress, however, that I need to read Night's Landing and Cold Ridge before I can comment further on this one. It's like an on-going plot with characters I should've already known about. I'll give this one another chance once I've read the other two... need to get the other two, never mind read it...

Maggie Spencer is a DS agent in Europe. She does not realize that her father was a spy and was killed by an assassin. She gets an email telling her that wanted criminal, Nicholas Janssen was in a small town near her. She reported that email and Janssen was arrested but not before he met with a hired assassin with a list of who to kill. The Dunnemore family was on that list along with the President. Rob Dunnemore was shot by someone hired by Dunnemore earlier in the year. Rob heads for the Netherlands to see if he can talk with Dunnemore. He meets Maggie Spencer and questions her. Another DS agent is killed in that same small town where Dunnemore was arrested. Rob and Maggie end up teaming up to figure out what is going on. They eventually find the assassin.

Maggie Spencer has just been transferred to the Hague office of the U.S. Embassy - working as a special agent for the U.S. State Department's Diplomatic Security Service. Three weeks after arriving, she receives an email tip on where to pick up an international fugitive in S'Hertogenbosch. Nick Janssen is picked up, but before he is he hires Libby Smith to assassinate a variety of people. Rob Dunnemore, a U.S. Marshal and close friend of the president was nearly killed by Janssen's goons in an earlier book. When he hears of his arrest, he goes to Holland and hooks up with Maggie. They're distrustful of each other, but attracted. Leads take them back to an inn in NY where the killer is apprehended. Rob and Maggie fall in love, but logistics seem to be against them. Then the president recruits them both to be "spooks" for 2 years. Some sex, but more suspense.

This is the 3rd book in the series and stood alone okay, but probably would've made more sense if the others were read first.

Based on an anonymous tip Maggie Spencer, U.S. Diplomatic security agent, helps to capture a dangerous fugitive in Holland. Rob Dunnemore, the US Marshall, who was shot as ordered by that fugitive, is now recovered and in Holland looking for answers. Then a fellow agent of Maggie's is murdered and a mysterious bum points them to an inn in the Hudson Valley for answers. Characters and plots from the previous two books are featured throughout and readers may have trouble following if they start with this book. Good thriller.

Sorry, I just didn't buy it. I adored Rob in the previous book, but he was rather bland here. I didn't feel the chemistry between him and Maggie. The villain wasn't villainous enough, and I feel like we're missing information about the couple who owned the inn (maybe not, but their actions seem extreme with the info we have). The bottom line is that I just couldn't believe it enough to give it a higher rating. :-(

Another fast moving and interesting story that you have to stretch your imagination to believe, but a nice story all the same. It does not make you cringe in fear or scream at the sudden impacts of the characters realizations, but again, a nice story.

This was my first Neggers book and might be the last. There wasn't enough chemistry between Maggie and Rob. There was no explanation of the strange behavior of the inn owners. I could go on, but in short, the whole story was flat.

Uneven but I really liked the main characters. And I'd love to read more of a few other characters' stories (Brooker especially!) which I assume are in some of her other books.

A good spy novel. My first read of a Carla Beggars’ book. Tying up loose ends made it somewhat plodding to finish the story. For me it could have easily been 4 stars.

Random pickup from my backup book pile. Didn't realize it was book three of a series. Probably would have enjoyed it more if I had the backstory. 🤣.

Kind of lost my interest in the middle, but then it really picked up. Less sex than a normal Neggers book, which was nice. Mild swearing

The Dunnemores and the Winters lead a life as some of the highest ranks of protection our country offers. I often read through the night to see where the next turn will lead them.

*** 3.5 stars ***

I enjoyed the storyline behind this of Maggie's father and how it got weaved together. William Raleigh was actually a nice surprise. With that being said, you really should read the book before this one as the author has integrated a storyline/characters from the book before this (Nights Landing i think). I did just only read this one and it can be read as a stand alone but there is alot of mention of the book before this and a "incident" with Robs family.

That brings me to my next point. There are a few too many side characters that don't bring anything to the story. I mean lets be real here, Nate/Sarah's characters are just there to advertise the previous book and as also there family friend the US President. To an extent, they were there to illustrate Rob's past but they were mainly there for advertising. Also, the owners of the Inn in Ravenkill could have been completely deleted and nothing would have changed about the book. I found the constant freak outs from the husband and the non stop crying from the wife to get old. Honestly, the author could have had Libby Smith own the property, heck it was her families at one point.

What I did enjoy about the book was how it was a STORY FIRST and then a romance second. I'm pretty sure there was only one sex scene the entire book and that was at the end (this comes from someone that enjoys a good, dirty book). Alot of books that I read just go too crazy with the sex and in this particular storyline it just would not have worked. I did however feel like the proposal at the end was a bit rush but to each there own.

All in all, the book had its flaws but it kept me entertained enough to make me want to buy the previous one to find out what happened in New York.

The Rapids is the third book in Carla Neggers U.S. Marshal series. The book opens with the arrest of Nicholas Janssen in The Hague. Janssen was one of the instigators of the trouble in the second book of the series. His arrest brings Rob Dunnemore to The Hague to try to discover anything he can about Janssen’s arrest. Maggie Spencer, the US diplomatic security agent, received the information about Janssen’s location. When other people start to die, Maggie attempts to piece the puzzle together while Rob shadows her. They return to the US on a tip and mayhem follows.

This is not one of Carla Neggers’ best, but it is very enjoyable.

I couldn't give this book any stars because it was almost physically painful to read and I only finished it to finish it. You pretty much have to have the previous book to understand all the relationships/friendships between the characters, which is a bad sign. I didn't like or care about any of the characters and I didn't care what happened to them or why.

I could have sworn I read a couple awesome ones by her but I can't remember the names. Richard North Patterson is the same way: some of his books are amazing and some I can't even get out of the first chapter because I have no interest in the story or the characters.
