Hiram Walter Harrington IV was 33 and had purchased a castle named Avondel in England. He was a medieval junkie and sponsored a fair in Seattle every year. His personal assistant was Victoria Elizabeth Desmond. Walter contacted a man named Tobias Thistlewaite who was a specialist in time travel. Tobias charged Walter $1,000,000 for himself and Victoria to travel back in time to 1274. Walter was trying to restore the castle and everything he tried to do fell apart. Walter wanted to find an Aethelwyn's amulet that was to contain magic that kept the castle and it's inhabitants invincible. He didn't tell Victoria of his plans regarding time travel until she showed up for what she thought was a regular business trip to England. They arrived in Avondel and found out that the siege had already taken place that they were hoping to arrive before. Just before they arrived, Gareth of Avondel had returned home after being gone for 12 years. He had been sent away by his parents to study and become a knight. His squire, Thomas, was 16 years old and traveling with him. They all headed to see the current owner of Avondel, Lord Ranulf of Darkvale. Ranulf was preparing for the annual jousting tournament in Darkvale. Gareth disguised himself and won the tournament. Walter and Victoria were talked about during dinner and Ranulf sent some of his guys to get them. They arrived at his castle and Walter ended up locked in a tower of the castle and Victoria was let go to search for the amulet as ransom for Walter's release. Gareth snuck out of the castle and found her. He talked Victoria into allowing him to be her champion and help with the search. He told Victoria that he was a knight called Perceval. They questioned people who had left Avondel and come to Darkvale to live trying to find the amulet. They went to question a friar at a monastery and Victoria was surprised to find out that Perceval was Gareth. She and Gareth were sleeping together by this time. Victoria had determined that she had to charm her knight to get him to trust her and she fell in love. Victoria had told Perceval that she was in love with him. Walter met Gareth's sister, Elwyna, who lived at Ranulf's castle. Elwyna was 20 and was placed in charge of Darkvale. She and Walter fell in love almost at first sight. Elwyna helped Walter escape from the tower when she found out that Gareth had returned. She snuck out of the castle and headed to the monastery to meet up with Gareth. The first Gareth had gone his wife the amulet upon the birth of his first son. Aethelwyn infused the stone with magic that would protect Avondel. It did what it supposed to do until it disappeared. The current Gareth had befriended the current king, Edward, before he became king and when he became king, he gave Gareth back Avondel. The castle was in ruin after standing empty for 10 years, since the death of Gareth and Elwyna's parents. Gareth wasn't at the castle when his parents died and Elwyna lived with Ranulf. Gareth needed to be told that Ranulf had helped the people and wasn't a bad man. He had killed Gareth's father in battle but Ranulf hadn't killed their mother. The castle and it's inhabitants were not doing well before Ranulf had arrived to take over the castle and it's surrounding lands. While at the monastery, Gareth was given the amulet by the friar. Victoria was not happy to find out that Gareth had lied to her about who he was and also angry to find out that he had no intention of taking the amulet to Ranulf to gain Walter's freedom. It was getting closer to the ending of the three weeks time they were given before they had to return home. Victoria put some drugs that she had in her purse that caused drowsiness into their dinner drinks. Gareth and Thomas fell asleep and Victoria took the amulet from Gareth and left the monastery. She headed out on foot and ran into Edwyna and Walter as they were on their way to the monastery. She gave the amulet to Edwyna since she no longer needed to free Walter since he was with her. Gareth and Thomas then caught up with them. Edwyna told Gareth that their father had not treated their mother well. He had not married her out of love but in order to gain the favor of the queen. Their mother had been under the king's guardianship. She had turned to Ranulf and they had fallen in love. She confessed this to William and he beat her and threatened to destroy her amulet. Juliana gave the amulet to the friar. William had become cruel and bad tempered, especially when drinking. After he found out that the amulet was missing, he killed Juliana. Ranulf had come to Avondale to rescue her but he was too late. He blamed himself and took in Edwyna and treated her like she was his own daughter. They headed toward Avondale together and Gareth was taken back when Thomas told him that Victoria had fallen in love with him. Gareth didn't want to hear that Victoria was in love with him. He said he wasn't in love with her. Victoria wasn't a virgin so he didn't consider her worthy of his love. He claimed he would only marry and virtuous woman and to him a virgin and virtuous were the same thing. Edwyna and Walter told him that they were in love with each other but they argued over the fact that she wanted to make love right away and Walter insisted that they wait until after they were married. On their way to Avondale, Gareth hung back to talk with Victoria and they ended up arguing over the fact that she wasn't a virgin, again and they heard a scream from Edwyna. They hurried to catch up and found out that some of Ranulf's men had taken Walter, Edwyna and Thomas. They hurried to catch up and face Ranulf. Ranulf was pleased to meet Gareth and to find out that he was no longer pursuing the idea of revenge toward Ranulf. The amulet was put back in it's place within the castle but it didn't seem to have done anything to raise the gloomy atmosphere of Avondale. During the next few days, the last three before the time traveler was to return, Gareth refused to speak to Victoria. He avoided her while the men discussed the repairs needing to be done to the castle and the crops, animals, and people's needs of the keep. The evening before they were to leave, Victoria made one last attempt to talk to Gareth and tell him good-bye. She was telling him good-bye when the friar showed up. Gareth couldn't tell Victoria anything but that he loved her. Both couples decided to get married that night. In the morning, Walter and Edwyna returned to the current time while Gareth and Victoria stayed where they were. Walter and Victoria had found their heart's desire.
A time travel story about a woman who is transported back to 13th century England by her employer. She meets Gareth of Avondel who is disguised as a poor knight to seek revenge for his parents' death.
It was fun; I love a time-travel plot. But it was very sappy and a lil cheesy. I audibly said gross at the last line: "We have love, Victoria, and you have taught me that love is the best magic of all." Gag me.
