My rating is 1.5 stars. The monthly "Red Road Spiritual Lessons" included in this book would be a reasonably good introduction to Native American thought for the complete novice, but the daily quotations I too often found shallow and superficial and sometimes taken out-of-context (much like the televised political sound bites we are all subjected to during election years). Additionally, the "Did You Know?" comments I found demeaning to both myself as a reader and people with Native American heritage in general. (For instance, included in the "Did You Know?" lists were these gems: "Indians do not all look alike" and "Not all Indians are alcoholics." My hunch is that anyone who holds these opinions would not be buying this book in the first place!) And while I agree that we as a nation must admit to a collective guilt in our treatment of the native peoples of America, I found it disconcerting to read an uplifting spiritual quote-for-the-day followed by a reminder that "on this date in history, hundreds of innocent native women and children were murdered by . . ." and so on. Either write a book on spirituality or a history of the disgraceful treatment of America's native peoples, but don't try to do both on one page!

If you are looking for a good introduction to a traditionally Native American view of life's big questions, my suggestion is to look elsewhere. There are surely better books out there (and as soon as I find them, I will let you know!)

Good book with hard truths

It's very difficult to remain civil in a country where in 400 years 95% of your kind were killed. Yet, us older ones realized the winds of change have come upon us. We must walk the Red Road and teach the younger ones to do the same. Now more than ever. I'm overjoyed when a young (or old) person seeks to reconnect with with Native American blood. Many are finding their way home again. May Wankan Tanka have mercy on us all. Night Horse.

I like this book because it says interesting things that I didn't know about Native American culture. It also often says things I like and agree with. Native Americans and non-Native Americans have different ways of looking at things it seems. Is that less of a difference now then it was a hundred years ago? I'm afraid it might be but that's not something you'll find answered here. Maybe another book.

I'm interested in Native American points of view and Native American culture in general so I recommend this book if you feel the same. The book is worth reading but I'm on the fence on whether I should add it to my collection. Worth reading a copy from the library, but now that I think about it I think I'd only get it if I could get it for a dollar or two in great condition. Interesting, but not a great book, not a must have.

Lovely little book of daily meditations based on the wisdom of the Elders. You may start at the beginning, or follow the moon and current phase (foreword explains how). As is true with everything not all the teachings will have meaning to you at the time. I read through this, one day at a time, twice and found new wisdom that I had missed the prior time.

If I was teaching a short course in Native American culture, this is the book I'd use. The quotes, the Red Road Lessons, the Red Road Ethics, the cultural explanations pull together all the books I've read into one small portable anthology. I keep Red Road near my bed, and read it for inspiration. 🌾pdm

Excellent Book

I used the daily readings in this book for my spiritual growth. I loved this book and anyone who wants to understand something of the cultures of the First Nations of America should get this book and read it carefully. Great Job.

Love this little book. It is a tiny bit repetitive but full of great known and lesser-known quotes, as well as historical information. I keep it on my desk and refer to it often. It's a good reminder of the really important things in life and how to stay grounded. I recommend it for anyone on a spiritual path.

Great book for spiritual enlightenment in learning about the Native Americans' history and some culture perspective. This book has made my life better by following the Red Road and practicing what wise men have passed down through traditional teachings.

I followed the teachings for the 365 days and I found it to be calming. I looked forward to a new quote everyday and learning about the different tribes' teachings.

A few good quotes and knowledge to share, and a lot of names and dates of the original inhabitants of this country but little other background on some really strong and ethical tribal leaders.

This waws an interesting daily reading book in that it provides multiple different approaches to reading about Native American culture. There is a quote per day, but also "On this day in history," as well s=as special setions for different times of year. There are occasional "Did you know?" sections that I found most useful, since I didn't know anything...

Living in New Mexico, this is a great book for me, and for anyone who wants to expand their perspective on Native American thought and wisdom and history.

Bits of wisdom from those who have passed on along with interesting facts that are great to learn. July's Red Road Ethic Speak the Truth, "Speak only the truth and do right always. You are what you say...and what you say needs to be honest, forthright, and of your own personal belief. Without truth you cannot achieve inner balance-balance within yourself, with other beings, with Mother Earth, and with the Creator".

I found this book on Amazon and a few years ago my boyfriend got it for me as Christmas gift.

I have found it to be a positive book that teaches wisdom as well as history and interesting facts. There are many pages I have marked so I can reread them.

I truly enjoyed this book and it will be one that I continue to reread.

I started this book this past week and being a 365 days of spiritual path, I figure I may have read it at least once through next year about this time. More review perhaps in 2023. So far, I'm loving the insights and thought-provoking daily pathways.

After passing through more than a year with this gem, I'm still loving the insights and thought-provoking daily pathways.
