Kings and other royalty were ink to Shakespeare and fueled (with the class system) English drama for years. Then, American writers drew their pens. With no royals, we crown our own kin. Families in homes with mortgages and cluttered garages are the stuff of our dreams, our jokes, and sorrows.

This collection of Hispanic American plays contains a favorite of mine - Roosters by Milcha Sanchez-Scott. Her heritage is complex. Colombian, Mexican, Indonesian, and Chinese. Asked "What books or authors influenced your development as a writer?" she answered simply. "Colette was always the one." I never made the connection before. I just saw myself in Rooster's little girl with wings.
