Readers are saying... "Cooper got me hooked in the first chapter." "One of the absolute best fiction books dealing with military fiction I have read in a very long time." "I can't say that I have enjoyed any series as much as this one." "Boy is it hard to work when a book is this good. Hard to go to sleep in time."
I asked Corps Justice readers what my books stand for and here's what they said:
"Honor, integrity and family." - Adam E.
"Truth, freedom and the American way." - Alvah D.
"Doing what's right." - Ken S.
"Service. Honesty. Dedication." - Vicki M.
"Overcoming evil." - Ken J.
"Truth and Justice." - Kevin H.
"Justice. Teamwork. Love of country." - Sherry C.
When asked what authors they read when they're not in C. G. Cooperland, they mentioned David Baldacci, Mike Ryan, Brad Taylor, Ted Bell, Jason Kasper, David Archer, Andrew Watts and Leo J. Maloney. It's great to be associated with such an amazing cast of writers.
We're not just a list of books around here. We're a family of readers who come together to share a common bond. Why don't you join us? We'd love to have you.
C. G. Cooper is the USA TODAY and AMAZON BESTSELLING author of the CORPS JUSTICE novels, several spinoffs and a growing number of stand-alone novels.
One of his novels, CHAIN OF COMMAND, won the 2020 James Webb Award presented by the Marine Heritage Foundation for its portrayal of the United States Marine Corps in fiction. Cooper doesn't chase awards, but this one was special.
Cooper grew up on a steady diet of Dungeons & Dragons and the travels of a Navy family.
Upon graduating from the University of Virginia with a degree in Foreign Affairs, Cooper was commissioned in the United States Marine Corps and went on to serve six years as an infantry officer. C. G. Cooper's final Marine duty station was in Nashville, Tennessee, where he fell in love with the laid-back lifestyle of Music City.
His first published novel, BACK TO WAR, came out of a desire to link back to his time in the Marine Corps. That novel, written as a side project, spawned many follow-on novels, several exciting spinoffs, and catapulted Cooper's career.
Cooper lives just south of Nashville with his wife, three children, and their German shorthaired pointer, Liberty, who's become a popular character in the Corps Justice novels.
When I read a first attempt by an author, even when it's been recommended by a friend, I'm very cautious. Usually, the book is riddled with spelling errors, incomplete sentences, missing words in sentences, multiple grammar errors and homonym usage that drives a Reader CRAZY !
None of that happened here. Well, almost none. A couple of words were mispelled. That's it!
And at the end of the book, the author actually solicited information so he could correct future editions, wow.
*****TOTAL SPOILERS. DON'T READ PAST HERE UNLESS YOU'VE READ THE BOOK !!!*****
About the story. A gangbanger supervising an initiation for a new member picks a young couple to assault. The wannabe gang lord can't see anything unusual, but when the assault goes down, the young man fights back, viciously. He blinds the initiate and the gangbanger let's his rats loose. Guns come out against the unarmed man and his fiance is deliberately murdered. In the fight, our hero, a young, recently released from active duty Marine, proceeds to eliminate the whole gang, permanantly. He saves the taxpayers a lot of money, but the lead "gangsta" gets away.
The gangbanger wants revenge and our young Marine, Cal, wants the same thing.
These two, diametrically opposed men fight a tactical war. Of course, Cal wins.
During the course of the book, we learn what Corps Justice means. IMHO, it's not a damned bad idea.
This is definately a guy series, maybe even a Marine series, but even us Army guys recognize the brotherhood the Marines have, and it brings back memories of when we did exactly what we were trained to do with our brothers in arms.
I gave it 2 stars so you would read my review. This is one of the worst books I've read in a long time. Each character is given their own chapter to tell their own story and background and described how smart and effective they are in their own way. Yet when events unfold not one character behaves to match the way they were described in their own mini biography. Men with super military history and all the money and weaponry they could ask for can only get through thick steel doors by cutting through the steel agonizing slowly one door after another instead of using some type of explosive. After the main character Cal loses his beloved Jessica to the violent thug gangster's random brutal murder Cal can't states "how did I not see that coming?" when the thugs kidnapped Jessica's parents? Her parents were the only living relatives left and the thugs were looking for revenge! Nothing makes sense in that no one in the book can think ahead, come up with a plan and execute the plan with the intelligence, experience and unlimited resources and weaponry they are described as having. The entire book is one instance after another of, "um, what happened?" I am a voracious reader and enjoy military type fiction but this book is just not believable. I will not continue with the series.
Not great, but not bad either for a first effort by the author.
As this is the first book in a series, a majority of the book was back story for the main characters. And as most of the characters are former military operators, SEAL, Marines, Army Rangers, and a medical corpsman, there is enough action in the characters history to keep the reader interested. As Cooper is a former marine, the stories probably have a lot of actual incidents behind them.
As with any story where it is indicated in the title that it's Book 1, or it's known that there is a sequel, there is absolutely no suspense when it comes to the end game of the chase. But not much can be done about that.
The mention of Famous Grouse scotch being drunk by the main character brings to mind another great series, The Corps, by W.E.B. Griffin with his constant reference to that scotch.
My only real gripe with the author's work was the dialogue reading like it was a screen play, not a novel. Example: "Cal: (softly) I know." Most readers can put the dialogue together with the setting and figure out the tone or inflection of the speaker. But that's just my view. The author addressed this in a blurb for the Amazon page for this novel. It might work for younger readers, it just didn't work for me.
Listened to this on audible. It was read by Daniel Morse. Terrible narration improved by speeding up to 1.5. Not my kind of book. Hero gets attacked by gang. Left for dead. Turns out his family have state of the art company that can solve any problem, full of good guys rescued from bad situations. Criminal smarter than the average which was a change. As the story unfolded I found it hard to figure out how did someone like Cal get attacked in the first place.
Another great C.G. Cooper novel and another great series about our men and women who have served in the military and are still serving in civilian life. Meet Cal Stokes, Marine veteran, injured in combat, but not sure what comes next. His deceased father's company offers him sanctuary while recovering from an attack that killed the love of his life, Jessica, and almost him as well. Hell bent on revenge for Dante West, the man responsible for his lose, Cal and friends actions take you along for all the action. Hang on tight, it's going to be a wild ride. Thanks for letting me get to know Cal, Brian, and the rest of the Justice team. This is one you don't want to miss.
I want to begin by saying. I am glad I'm a member of i Love eBooks ARC. If it hadn't been for them, I would never have found C.G.Cooper or his books. I normally don't read "modern" themed books (unless they'reparanormal) but since I'd joined the ARC I find myself reading all kinds of books I normally wouldn't. Even as I dislike military and modern novels, I promise my review is non discriminitory, and very honest. I love the format of this book. I'm a huge fan of screenplays and absolutely enjoyed the movie-esque feel while reading this. This book starts with violence. It's written so vividly you can see it, you can feel each wound inflicted on the fighters, you can smell the blood. C..G definitely has a way with the written word, so much so you get lost in the world he's created right away. (I could have done without the image of gauged our eyeballs though lol) I also liked how the military slang terms (for instance, "Gunny") had the actual names in parenthesis for those of the civilian type. The story line was well thought out. It's clear C.G.Cooper did his homework when it comes to how the Marine branch of the Military is run. I can see Cal as every bit the calculated weapon he was trained to be. Even while Incapacitated he knew there would be trouble and insisted on being prepared for anything. The book and more than likely the entire series was written with a military mind. Of that I have no doubt. I honestly believe this book would make a great action movie. One to rival Jason Bourne in it's detail and plot line. The only gripe with the novel, are the flashback stories they aren't bad, quite the opposite actually. I wish it wasn't so short. Maybe Mr. Cooper will consider lengthening them into little novellas as he did with God-Speed. Cal's history is quite interesting. The way he strove to avenge his parents and uphold everything his father had made SSI into is amazing. MSgt Trent's backstory is very relatable to anyone that grew up in the hood. Ghettos are a nightmare regardless of your size. I really liked his back story a lot. I also think I'm not the only one who would enjoy seeing a short story as to how Dante got himself all twisted into what he was made to be. The action scenes are well thought out. So much so I was able to picture the darts and the confusion. This book was beautifully written. Although a little slow to start since this isn't my normal genre to read.. I did enjoy the story very much. I give Back to War 4 of 5
Mr. Cooper has a genuine out-of-the-ballpark home run with this series! He joins the ranks of Clancy, Thor, and Flynn; developing a believable protagonist who grows and matures during the course of these three books. He shows the heart and soul of our military and the bond that all Warriors understand. He skillfully lays the groundwork in each of the three books, taking us on a twisting, but very rewarding journey, where we can cheer the hero, and hope that right will prevail. Good guys are not always what they seem, bad guys are shown for what they are (most of the time), and sadly, as in real life, an occasional hero goes to stand guard at Heaven's Gates. I am solidly hooked on Mr. Cooper's writing and can't wait for next month's Social Security check so I can buy Books 4 & 5, something I rarely do as there are so many great free reads available on Kindle. If you are going to spend money on a book, this author deserves your support. You will be entertained and will go back to read these again. Well done, sir, you have a new fan!
I read and enjoyed Adrift, so I didn't hesitate to add Corps Justice books 1-3 to my reading queue. And it wasn't long before I reached for them. Cooper does a great job of creating characters, action and a story line that you don't want to put down. I find myself reading until my eyes won't focus when I should be sleeping. I tried not to read all three at once, but it is so hard to put them down. The good news is I just added another C.G. Cooper book to my read queue. Thanks for a great read, C.G.
Literally stumbled across this book while looking for something new to read and I was pleasantly surprised. The story reads very well not clogged with characters that contribute little to nothing to the story, just enough to give background and keep the story moving along. Very ready read with a nice piece that keeps the pages turning. Ready to read the next in the series. Nice job!
I got 10 chapters in before closing it for good. Plots terrible. Dialogue is terrible and rather cheesy, even for a "military book" if you can call it that. The characters are terrible and there is WAY to much back story for literally everyone. Way to much of the jar-head/meat-head garbage in this one. Only one of maybe 5 books I've never finished, nor do I plan too.
Pleasantly surprised by this as well in the domestic thriller genre. It is on the short side maybe 275 pages so it's a fast read. A good beach or airplane book. It's offered in kindle unlimited so no extra cost to it. I'll be looking for others by this author.
Back to War is the title of a book about Cal Stokes, a recent honorably discharged Staff Sergeant in the Marines who had been awarded the Navy Cross. Engaged to his beloved Jessica they were attacked while on a date by a local gang.
It was an initiation for a new member of the gang and was otherwise meaningless.
The gang intended to do some harm, but not kill the couple. Beating the guy was definitely in the plan, what they would do to the girl wasn’t clear. The gang initiate, “Shorty” was armed with a knife and a mallet. The attack was well planned. Cal and Jessica were at the wrong place at the wrong time.
When the gang member grabbed Jessica and dragged her into the alley, Cal was instantly “Back at War”. The other gang members moved in and blocked the alley so “Shorty” could do some damage to the pursing Cal. Dante West, the gang leader was already in the alley to evaluate the new recruit in action.
More would be wandering into spoiler country but I don’t mind revealing that the war is between Dante West, the gang leader, and Cal Stokes, the ex-Marine who’s friends and family were up to the task of challenging a powerful gang leader. Cal didn’t want help, but Marines of his valor and gallantry are never without friends, and he was from a family of decorated and respected Marines.
The book isn’t by Tom Clancy, but C. G. Cooper isn’t a literary slouch. It’s a rather short fast paced novel that manages to stuff a lot of information into it and keep the reader turning pages. By the end of the novel I was ready for book two in the series.
The book is written much like a script of a movie but is three times the length of a normal movie script. Irrelevant to me as I mostly listened to the audiobook while doing some long boring chores. It made 6 hours of mindless work go by pleasantly.
I recommend the book, and I’ll be reading more in the Corps Justice Series.
Not sure how to begin. This is my 1st read of any of your books & I'm in awe. Being female, a widow, with my only military connection being my father serving in Europe during WWII. I'm one of those who makes it a point to Thank all I see who serve. Doesn't matter whether it's military, police, fire, 1st responders, etc. I understand there's some who don't want thanks, it's their *job* & to those I apologize but I'm just so grateful for their sacrifice & their loved ones sacrifice, that I just can't risk not telling them how much it's appreciated.
That said. This book was so incredible. I want these characters to be real. I believe in "Corps Justice". I will be reading all your books. Maybe it's because I read this book on Memorial Day that it impacted me so deeply, but I doubt it. I think it wouldn't have mattered when I read it.
You have a new fan. After I've read a few more, I may try to join your group. Maybe. Being female, not sure how well I'd fit in.
Thank you again for your service & for your ability to continue serving by writing these amazing books.
Good characters, Non-stop action that makes you want not to be interrupted. I finished it in a day, and immediately started on book 2. (I also have 3 and 4 teed up ready.)
The series name "Corps Justice" refers to the Marine Corps ethos that has been carried over into a security organisation set up by a retired Marine Colonel. The central character is Cal, the Colonel's son, another marine used to fighting against the odds - a hero, but by no means invulnerable or infallible. It's interesting to see his character develop and to learn more of his background.
There were a couple of eccentricities of layout (at least in the Kindle edition) - the first paragraph of each chapter was double spaced; and dialogue was presented as in a dramatic script - with the character's surname in bold caps, followed by the dialogue. I didn't much care for these oddities, as I found them mildly distracting - but not enough of a distraction to stop me reading. I'm glad to say subsequent books have a conventional layout.
I really liked one of his other books (A Life Worth Taking) but because it was the only one out, I couldn’t continue that series so I thought I’d try this one. It is predictable but good. I’d give it four stars but there were SO many typos in the kindle edition. There were also some loose ends that never got tied up and I’m assuming that will be in another book maybe? He introduces characters all the way up until the last fight scene happens too which I assume is to lay ground work for later. It was an easy read, allowed good stopping points, but it is definitely for a specific type of reader. If you are into military and enjoy the “cop mystery” type, definitely read this.
Former Marine Staff Sergeant Cal Stokes has returned to the United States from War. He and His fiancé are on their way to dinner, when a gang initiation goes wrong and plunges him into a war here in the U.S.! He loses his fiancé, kills several gang members, blinds one, and wounds the head of the gang. Cal wakes up in the Hospital with a former Navy Corpsman as his Nurse. This book takes off from there and does not slow Down! This is all I am going to tell you. This book is A Good Read!! If you read it you will thank me for not spoiling the end for you and if you don't read it you won't Care. A very Good Read. Santa Mike
I really enjoy a good crime action novel. And I did enjoy reading this book, but I found myself being distracted by grammatical and punctuation errors, and out right words missing in sentences. I use my Kindle, so I do have the option of correcting these, but that is a very time-consuming process when there so many to correct. And besides, what’s in it for me? I did this with a couple of other authors, and offered my services as a proofreader, but never heard back from them, so I stopped my corrections. If Mr Cooper is reading my review you can contact me and I would be happy to be a proofreader for you, you certainly need one. miichaelsmusik@yahoo.com. Thanks, Michael
It's a good story - a group of former Marines run a security agency that takes on difficult cases when the authorities can't because of laws or international interest. Cal lost his fiancee during a gang initiation when they were attacked by several men. Now he's dealing with the gang leader who wants revenge. I'm reading this as I wait for the results of an election that has seen American values ignored for cash, loyal allies attacked, and dictators honored. I'm wondering what this Corps of Justice would think of how low this country has sunk and how far from the ideals of the Founders.
A Really Great Story! The Corps Justice books are some of the best I have read! Cal Stokes is a true war hero who comes home to only face a domestic enemy. Having a strong moral compass makes it hard to side step some laws to fix what needs to be fixed. When a gang banger during a gang initiation picks on Cal and his fiancée and kills her, his mission has now become to find all of the men involved in the attack. Cal calls on his friends from the military to help. Read the story to see how things evolve with Cal and his quest for justice. There are many twists and turns as the story unfolds. Read along to join the adventure, I think you will really enjoy this book, I know I did!!
I was about three paragraphs in when I said to myself, "This HAD to have been self published." Not that I'm against self publishing, I just couldn't fathom this book getting picked up by any legit publishing company. It's a lot like a cheesy 80's action movie, with the incredibly stereotypical criminals, unresearched or inexperienced fight scenes, and bad dialogue. How it got such a high rating, I can't imagine. I like this genre of book, I anxiously wait for the new Mark Greaney/Court Gentry book every year. But this one is just horrible.
Its a good book for those who like reading action pack story-lines about Marines. What I especially liked about Coopers's storytelling is when each critical character's background is described with a flashback excerpt , the whole sequence is described in incidents with active conversations among characters. Not seen this style of writing till now which makes it a refreshing read. Although the climax could have been done better, all in all it was satisfactory.
I was pleasantly surprised by this book. I honestly didn't think I would like it as much as I did. The writing style was different, written almost like a screenplay instead of a novel. After I got used to that it didn't bother me. The back stories of the characters were interesting, the general plot was entertaining, and overall the story was suspenseful and worth the read. Marked down for some bad editing, but... Like I said, I was pleasantly surprised.
Fast moving,a bit more violence than I generally prefer, but where that occurred I fast read though few pages. Loved the plot. I have not served in military, but I am a patriot and am a sucker for military stories and patriotic music. Thank God for those who serve. Thanks to Mr Cooper for recognizing their contributions and sacrifices. I look forward to reading through the whole series.
