This was free on Kindle and so I decided to skim this. It wasn’t helpful to me, since I was already familiar with all of the stitches, but could be a nice aid to someone who’s just getting started in crochet. I would recommend watching videos in conjunction with reading it, as some stitches are hard to learn without seeing someone do it.
Many years ago I had borrowed a library book in the children’s section to learn how to crochet. Since that time and three kids later I wanted to get back to it but I couldn’t find the book. Alas, I came across this book and I’m so glad I did. The directions are very easy to follow in simple language that anyone can follow. I’ve made several hats that have been confiscated by my kids and a few other things. A big thank you to the author for this.
I am an avid crocheter, but am looking for good resources to share with someone who wants to learn. This is not it. My first issue is that there is a lack of correct vocabulary. This may seem picky, but if you teach yourself to crochet from this book and then try to crochet something from another source, you will probably struggle when you don’t understand “slip knot” and “yarn over”. You need to know the commonly used terms in order to understand normal patterns or directions. My other main issue is that it doesn’t seem to address the various parts of the stitches or where, specifically, to insert your hook. A clear description (and illustrations) that teach where the front loop, back loop, post, etc are on various stitches and where in these parts a hook is inserted at various times is, in my opinion, mandatory information for a beginner. I found this especially troublesome when skimming the patterns and saw one instructed to use one loop only. There are other areas that could be improved but I could overlook if it weren’t for these 2 main issues.
I am a visual learner and because of that I find most "how to" books of any kind really hard to understand. If I see a pattern being done by someone I can remember it for life and can use it, but if all I get is verbal institutions I can't understand it at all. Luckily my mom taught me to granny square so I had rudimentary knowledge of crochet. The illustrations in this book are so clear that I got it finally after trying to learn for 20 years. I can now read a pattern and make anything because I have clear instructions and drawings to guide me. Thanks Sarah, great book!
I give this book 5 stars simply because I found it full of helpful information as I am a month or two I to into my learning to Crochet thus, with my limited knowledge base and knot-stitch use finding myself very challenged in what patterns I am able to undertake. This book has opened so many more patterns I am able to attempt now, still plan to take it slow but with the knowledge help this book gives I am anxious to start new patterns. :- ) Thomas :- )
I would recommend this book for beginners. This tutorial is brief but trustworthy. It offers a few simple projects to work on. As an experienced crochet guru, I found this easy to follow and understand. Too boring and short for the experienced though. The illustrations are adequate and appear in a diagram format. This booklet also offers a guide to crochet hook sizes, tensions and abbreviations.
I haven't crocheted in over 20 years. Even then. I've only made blankets. My daughter asked me to crochet a blanket for the new baby. But she wanted a very loose stitch. To match with her sisters blanket. Thanks to you I will be able to make it. All I had ever done was a popcorn stitch or single and double stitches. This one will require a triple stitch. Now I have to figure out how much yarn to use. So back to the drawing board.
I have been crocheting about 2 years yet I still think of myself as a novice lol. There is so much I still cannot do. For someone who learned to read a pattern my first week, it's like another language, it just came easy. But! Working in the round and making a magic circle is never going to be in my repertory of talents. This book helped me learn a few things and I love that. Now to keep using them so I don't lose them lolol
Here's what I love about this book - Taylor doesn't bog it down with details of the history of crochet or how she started (though i'm sure that is an important story for her). This is truly a straight forward, succinct instruction on how to crochet. While I have not yet been able to finish the projects included in the book, this is a reasonable book to return to and reread for reminders and additional practice.
I'm so glad it was free. Bc I can't follow it at all. Ill YouTube now. I'm a lefty n that's hard enough in a right handed world. Don't want to buy what I can't follow at all. N from what I have seen I knew other then abrev. I'd rather see a video or a person then a book
Gives very basic instructions for beginners. The slipper pattern is interesting. I may make them. I've been crocheting for many years but I'm sure I'll pick up a few tips.
Provides step by step instructions with illustrations. Sample projects allow you practice what you learn. Contains useful conversion charts of books and yarn types, as well as US/UK crochet technologies that help you read patterns from both sides of the pond.
Loved this book from start to finish, though the stitch guides might have been better with more instruction images. I will be keeping this on my kindle as reference.
I read through this book I actually didn't read every page of it but I enjoyed what I read I would recommend this book for anybody that wants to learn how to crochet. And it also has patterns in it too.
You people should just read this book yourselves and write your own review on this novel yourself and I really enjoyed reading this book very much so. Shelley MA
I liked the book it had some cool pattsi liked. For me its hard 2 read instructions but she made them prety easy to understand. I would recommend it to everyone
A very nice guide for beginning crocheters - from hooks, yarn, all the basic stitches with a few beginner patterns. All is well written with easy to follow instructions.
I appreciated that the author didn't waste a lot of Tim m new with the history of crochet our what got her interested in it, etc. She just jumped right in with simple instructions and helpful pictures. I bookmarked several pages!
