Starting From Broken was a beautiful story of starting love over with someone who knows exactly what it's like to be in a misguided and deceitful relationship.
I enjoyed that both main characters Braxton and Liz were needing to walk away from their past and find a new future. FT Zele, definitely wrote the book with heart and feeling. There was one twist that I felt was somewhat cliche or too coincidental but this is a work a fiction and often in life strange things happen. So this twist did not affect the overall story or vibe.
Overall the characters were well developed and you got a sense of who they were and where they'd been. Their background stories were plausible and fit with the tone of the story. i also enjoyed that one character didn't over shadow or overtake the other. Their personalities were balanced. What I loved most was Braxton's motivation for how he kept himself closed off and unavailable. That was refreshing. I always enjoy familial ties of a character.
And while the characters back stories weren't necessarily new and unheard of, there wasn't a time where I was thinking, "oh been there, read that."
I am a reader that really loves the supporting characters stories embedded within the main story and these characters, Sophie and Travis, most definitely have their own story and I hope that FT Zele decides to take their story further and give us another book based on them.
I liked that Zele added just enough humour that the story wasn't too heavy or drawn out.
Throughout the story I could feel the emotions the author wanted to elicit and the flow of the story was relatively smooth and worked well.
This was Zele's second book and I can see the confidence in her story telling grow.
I look forward to reading another story from her.

Starting From Broken by F.T. Zele is a heart-breaking story about starting over, with your life and with love. A story of love lost and found again; and how sometimes love does not conquer all and the lesson that no matter how much love you give to another; it won't always save them from themselves as you would hope. Starting From Broken is my first book by F.T. Zele and I can guarantee that it won't be my last, as this author has a way of grabbing the reader and thrusting them into the story with such a ferocity that keeps you turning each page until the very end. Starting From Broken was a 4 star read for me and I highly recommend it to others.

"I stare at a broken tile on the ceiling and count the holes. I imagine the tile is me- broken and full of holes-except no maintenance person will be able to replace or fix me."

Liz Murphy found love despite the odds that were against her, growing up in the foster system, never thinking that she would find a love of her own or truly belong to a family; that is until she met and fell in love with Jacob and his quirky but fiesty sister Sophie. But when Jacob is taken from her way too soon, she fell into a life of surviving but not truly living. That is until one night when she meets Sophie at the bar after work and is enamoured by feelings she never thought she would have again for a virtual stranger. It is only after a series of chance meetings that Liz and Braxton finally have their first date which leads to so much more than either of them anticipated.

Braxton Wright has no time or place in his life for anything other than a one-night stand. He adores his mother, who is suffering from a rare form of MS, and every success that he has in his life has been to make things easier for his mother. Never getting close to a woman has been his motto, as most girls makes demands on his time, and that is time away from his mother and the limited time that she has left in his world. Something about Liz makes him re-think he manwhore ways, and he goes as far as to tell Liz about his mother and what she means to him, why he behaves the way he does with the woman in his life before her. Although Liz would never dream of taking Braxton away from his mother, she is unsure of whether she is ready to start a relationship with him, as that would be taking away from Jacobs memory.

Once Liz comes to terms with needed to move forward with her life and possibly opening herself to love again; she discovers a secret so devastating, it makes her question everything that she ever knew about her life, her marriage and her husband. It is then when things seem fall into place for her and she finds the comfort that she needs in the arms of Braxton. But is Braxton's love enough? Can they bother over-come their past hurts to put together the broken parts of themselves and become whole within each other? Or will they remain broken, just going through the motions of living? You will have to read to find out and I highly recommend that you do!!

My review
I'm going to start my review by thanking Ms Zele, this is one of the most powerful and heartbreaking (then heart-warming) stories that i've read in a long time!
The leading lady, Liz Murphy, was used to being alone and feeling unloved so, of course, she grew up longing for a family of her own, she met her husband and her little world was perfect....until his life was cruelly cut short and Liz was all alone again with only her best friend Sophie to support her. She then decided that nothing was worth the pain so she retreated into a grief stricken shell where nothing seem possible...so she attempted to end it all. Sophie decided that she wouldnt let Liz wallow in her depression anymore so drags her slowly back to life...enter Braxton!

Braxton was also operating in self-destruct mode, with a long string of meaningless one night encounters and working towards a full breakdown. There was only one woman that mattered to him and she was his sole focus. He had no time to even entertain the thought of a relationship.

This book was written in an educated and emotive fashion. I adored the secondary characters (Sophie and Travis) they provided the much needed softer side to the story. I find myself in a bit of a quandary here...i'm in love with the story and the characters, its exceptionally well written and the internal narratives provided by both characters gave you a greater insight into their feelings. Here lies the problem...How on earth with Zele manage to top this with her next novel!!!

5 stars!! If i could award more here...i would! very well done Ms Zele!

A new author to add to my must-read list!

Liz Murphy was used to being alone. Moving from pillar to post in the foster system had her yearning for the family she never had. After losing her husband, she lost all hope that life could have anything more for her. Two years later, she was still struggling to hang on as she clung to work to keep herself moving forward. Her best friend Sophie has been her constant champion and she won’t let Liz hide any longer. On her first official outing in a long time, Liz is shocked to find herself instantly attracted to Braxton Wright, pub owner and boss to Sophie’s new boyfriend. Braxton, too, was operating in “broken” mode. He was concentrating on work as well but for a different reason. His ailing Mom meant everything to him and that was his focus for every decision he made whether at work or in his almost non-existent personal life. Trying to keep each other at arm’s length isn’t working but their tentative steps to get closer are marred with past baggage and misunderstandings. Faced with another tragedy, would this be the straw that finally breaks them both?

I really enjoyed this standalone, full-length novel. Liz and Braxton each struggled with their own demons and the author revealed these very personal battles in eloquent fashion. Without their inner voices letting me know what was motivating their actions, I may have been put off by the speed in which they went from strangers to lovers to enemies and wary friends. What might, on the surface, have seemed like over the top drama was actually real people struggling with real problems that I could relate to. The secondary characters provided that down-to-earth element that the main characters needed to keep them grounded. Sophie and Travis are friends we all wish to have. Jade also provided a beautiful and sweet touchstone for Braxton and Liz. This novel was both heartbreaking and hopeful and it will be on my re-read shelf so I can enjoy it all over again!

I was given this ARC in return for a honest review.

What do you get when you have two broken and defeated souls? When you thought everything was alright and then the next day everything gets ripped away from you. When a chanced encounter can bring you back to the living.......F. T. Zele has answered all these questions with this great story.

Liz is a twenty something professional who's world was rocked two years prior due to her husbands sudden death. With encouragement from her best friend Sophie, Liz soon starts to realize that she has more living to do. By getting into much needed therapy and facing her fears head on, Liz soon starts to live again.

Braxton is a local bar owner with no desire for a perminate relationships. His only constant relationship is back at his house and she is his main priority. By constantly working and keeping all female connections to a one night only basis, Braxton has given himself a certain persona. But what Braxton wasn't expecting was his savior to walk right into his bar one night.

Both Liz and Braxton have numerous encounters with each other and start to form a friendship. But what they don't know is that this new friendship isn't what they think it is. Feeling start to form and both start to divert back to their old habits. Can their new found friendship/feelings survive? Liz and Braxton will have to grow up and decide that their old ways might not be the best.

This is a uplifting story about two broken souls who find each other just at the right time. Both play major parts in each others healing and without one another, Liz nor Braxton would heal like the need to. This story got me in a few places. I found myself at times crying like a baby but then at certain parts I found each character lived in his or her head TOO much. Constant self doubt was also a major issue with each character, which at times made me roll my eyes. But all in all I did enjoy the book and loved its happy ending. I would recommend this book to my fellow readers.

let's just say wow oh wow.. I'm still coming down from my high. Great way to start 2015

I'm so in awe of the emotional roller coaster I just went through while reading this. I cried, laughed, was shocked to my core.. In the beginning you read of a girl who had her heart shattered to pieces. Not broken shattered.. So much so she doesn't think she could ever move past it. Just when she thinks she's got things figured out things get worse, a whole lot worse and I find myself un-comfortably giggling. I mean this poor girl has been through so much you can't imagine it can get worse and it does. It's like wow! What else.. I felt so bad for Liz. I liked her instantly though. Yes, she was going through crap but she was strong even if she didn't always see it. Once she made up her mind that was it. She needed some help along the way though..

In comes Braxton, doesn't the name say it all? Oh but he is so much more. At first I thought he was a bit arrogant. Totally full of himself but as you get to know him he's pretty much just like Liz. He's strong and independent and doesn't have time to let anyone in his world full time. Liz and Braxton never saw each other coming. Their story was so tragically beautiful and real. They literally started from broken. Both of them shattered in their own ways. Both struggling to find themselves and just let go. This book made me see them both for who they were and I loved every second of them.

Sometimes you need a story that isn't fluff and roses. You need one that's going to pull your heart strings, one that will rip out your soul and bring you back totally light headed and high from what you just read. This book was that for me. I was told that it's a break Em down and put them back together kind of book and that's exactly what this book is. I needed this read and if you want a read that is real and will challenge every emotion you really need to read this.

Lost love, new friendships and finding a way to live and love again.

I went into this book blind. I did not pay much attention to the synopsis because I just wanted to see what story the author could write. With that being said, I am impressed. From the very start of the book Ms. Zele had me hooked. The reality of this story is spot on.

Liz has gone through something that people should not have to deal with but that is just life. If it were not for her friend Sophie, she would have never made it through. After two years of just existing she meets Braxton (juicy name, I know). Now this is where things just heat up. Braxton being the sexy complicated man that he is a total jerk. But I loved him, I know I am twisted. He has his reasons and they are justified, he is doing what he needs to do to protect himself.

I enjoyed watching Liz become a strong woman after all her heartache. She learned how to face her past and stand up for herself when Braxton reverted back to his dark place. No matter what the out come of the book was going to be I knew that Liz would be just fine.

I am reminded of a couple of lessons that we have been taught one time or more. Never just assume that you can figure out someone, just because you think it does not mean it is true. Assumptions are not what they seem and Braxton learns this lesson.

Overall this book was very good. I was impressed with the characters and the honesty that they gave one another. I was afraid that Braxton and Liz both were going to continue to not share each others story, but when they did it was the right time. When you start from broken, the only way out it to put yourself back together and start over.

What happens when the one person you thought was meant for you really wasn’t? What if the person you were truly meant to be with is a broken soul, just like you, and you have to endure heartache to find him or her?

Liz Murphy has a reason for being so reserved about starting a relationship. Broken for two years, she tried the unimaginable after thinking she couldn’t move on from the cards she had been dealt. With the help of therapy and her best friend Sophie, she learns to slowly pick up the pieces in order to move forward.

Braxton Wright is a local business owner concerned with making money for one specific reason. He doesn’t desire a relationship, for fear that it might interfere with the one person who means the most to him. For Braxton, random hookups mean no feelings get involved and he can concentrate on the matters at hand.

A series of chance meetings between Liz and Braxton instantly proves there is an undeniable attraction, but will each of them allow the other into their life?

Starting from Broken is a triumphant story of two broken characters and their struggle to piece together their lives in order to find their happily ever after. Ms. Zele has created a story full of happiness and despair, but most importantly, a story to teach readers that true love is worth a second chance.

A wonderful read and most definitely a recommendation from me!

Truly enjoyed Braxton & Liz's story. Braxton is definitely a bad boy with a hidden soft side. He made you want to smack him one minute then give him a hug the next. Love his commitment to his mother & his love for her. Made my heart melt.

Liz has been dealt with such a crappy hand in life. From a rough start in life to losing her husband then finding out he was a lying cheater. You really just want to give her a happily ever after. She is stronger than she thinks & doesn't put up with Braxton's crap. I love how she makes him step up to be a better man.

This book kept me enjoying it from beginning to end. Looking forward to more from this author.

Starting from broken is a great love story. Your heart will break for this amazing woman Liz. The tragedy and sorrow she goes through seems more than one woman should be able to handle. She finds unbelievable strength to move past the heartbreak and take back her life. Braxton's love for his mother is so heartfelt. His story is equally touching as he works to make the life of the woman who gave him his, struggle free. Keeping his heart closed off almost costs him everything. The unconditional love that Liz shows him, makes Braxton realize that everything he has wanted is right in front of him.

Reading the journey of these two people, will keep you glued to this book.

I really enjoyed this book. first time I read anything from this author and I was pleasantly surprised. Liz and Braxton's story is such a great story. they both had abandonment issues. Liz thought she had a great marriage only to be shocked after his death. Braxton has daddy abandonment issues. she fights at first and so does he by being a jerk when he sees she is getting to him. but their connection is strong and they find their way back. they have some struggles along the way and some surprises but they know they are it for each other. well written with great characters and support characters that I hope will be a follow up book. great read.

I'm not going to give you another summery of this book. Plenty of other people have already did that. This book has an over protective best friend, a boyfriend that can be a douchebag but wants to change and a girl in the middle trying to find her way back from being broken. Starting From Broken keep me guessing through out the whole book. Great recipe for a wonderful story! Don't miss it!I also love that this book was not a cliffhanger!

I love happy endings. Nothing compares to the happy sigh after you've read "The End" on your Kindle.
Starting from Broken is a story about "real life"—meaning it's story about love, loss and second chances. Braxton and Liz story is a perfect example of it.
I also like Sophie, Liz' best friend ..It is not everyday that you can find a friend who's been there in every stages of life and who will always be there to back you up and fight for your battle.

Just when Liz Murphy thinks her life is exactly where it needs to be, reality comes crashing into the picture with no regard for her plans that she had secured for her future. Tragedy is no stranger to Liz Murphy, but for once in her life she would just be happy with some consistency that will keep her grounded to the one place she wants to be; happy. Jumping from house to house in her younger years through the foster care system, Liz knew that she didn't have the opportunity to really be with the people that she knew would love, and care for her.

Left after the tragedy that leaves her in a shell of herself for close to two years, Liz turns to her best friend, Sophie. Sophie is a fun outgoing person who seems to know when, where, what to say, and how to act when it comes to picking up men. What she doesn't know is how to pull her best friend out of a two year long rut that has her moping for someone that will never walk back into her life. When Liz's eyes land on Braxton Wright that first night, something within Liz clicks, and she is ready to face the world head on, and get ready for the life that she knew had been set aside for her.

Braxton Wright doesn't know what to think of Liz when she walks into his world. He doesn't come off as a caring person. At all. He is focused on himself, his bars, his women, and what the future holds for himself. Which isn't much if he keeps up his attitude of everything is about him. That is until he meets Liz. Liz who needs repairing, and some fixing up in terms of relationships and herself go. Liz who is sweet, caring, and still broken from the tragedy that ripped her life apart. Liz, who for once, may be able to fix someone other than herself.

This book is one hell of a roller coaster ride. I found myself laughing, crying, wanting to throw my Kindle, to understanding all within chapters of each other. It was simply amazing the well written story that ensued the heartbroken Liz, and the all mighty Braxton who didn't need anybody in his life other than himself, and his mother. But why type of story would it be without the main characters getting what they wanted in the end? The emotional heartache in Starting From Broken is just breathtaking.

F.T Zele did a wonderful job starting both Liz, and Braxton from a past that doesn't seem pliable to come back from. From Liz being in foster care her entire life, to the tragedy that ultimately breaks her down to a shell of herself, to Braxton not wanting a relationship because it could destroy his relationship with his mother - it is exhilarating. It is demanding, it is emotional. So, grab some tissues, grab a very comfortable seat, and get lost in Liz, and Braxton's story.

Thank you, F.T. Zele for allowing me to review Starting From Broken!

Starting From Broken was a heart wrenching tale of love lost and trying to pick up the pieces of your life after such a loss. I would give this book a 4 star and would recommend to others. This story broke my heart at the beginning..I am not sure I would be able to pick up the pieces after losing what Liz lost in her life. Then you have Braxton his life will shatter into pieces as well the title of this book says it all they started from broken and are looking for a way to pass through the broken pieces. This is the first story I have read by F.T. Zele but it most certainly won't be the last. Will they find an HEA or will the pieces of there lives be too broken to fix???

Liz grew up in the system so when she met Jacob her life turned around for the better for once in her life but when all that is taken away and she is left in shambles she will do something drastic.. but fate has a way of stepping in and Liz will have to live with the tragedy and her choices. When Liz finally decides to clean up her life starting with her house she will find something that will make her wonder what went wrong in the first place did she not see signs that she should have changed her life years ago and that this tragedy may have just opened a new door for her? She will finally go out to have some fun but a certain hot sexy man keeps popping up everywhere she goes, when they finally meet he will treat her badly one night and she feels like all is lost again.

Braxton only cares about himself and his mom.. he has one night stands but doesn't give his heart away. He will not let anyone get between his plan he has to take care of his mother and most woman try to take him away from that. When he meets Liz he is immediately curious about her and when they give into the lust that have been skirting around he finds out a secret about Liz and bolts out the door leaving her knowing what he is doing will ruin what he could have had with her.

What will happen when more secrets come out and tragedy strikes again? Will Liz be able to open heart again to someone that could potentially hurt her more than Jacob ever did? Will Braxton let go of his control and finally find love? Or will it all be for nothing when the final secret is revealed?

Go get this book now you will not be disappointed one bit! Thanks for a great mind crazy journey and I look forward to much more in the future from this author!

I was given a copy of this book for an honest review

This book was intense at times. Liz is this woman who thought she had it all. Then life happens and things change. You have to start over from broken basically. What Liz once thought, all turns out to be a lie. She thought she had meet and married the man she would love forever. Thank god she has an amazing best friend who is there for her through thick and thin. Liz has to start to live again and when she meets Braxton she starts to feel again. But that too may not turn out the way she hopes.
Braxton is a man whore, lol! He makes time for only one woman in his life and that is his mother. She is his on constant. He does everything for her. Now don't get me wrong, he is a mamas boy but not in the creepy way! Haha. His mother has done everything to make sure Braxton was taken care of when he was growing up, this is why he works so hard to be the man his mom would be proud of. Most women don't understand that is why he normally only sees a woman once. Until he meets Liz. When he meets her things change for him. But there is more to his story than Liz knows that may ruin them before they being.

I would recommend this book to others!

Can two people who have Broken pasts be able to come together and Start a new foundation with each other in their lives.

This is the story of Liz Murphy and Braxton Wright (love that name by the way). Liz was one of those as a youngest who was thrown into the foster care system with no one who she could love to herself. She was moved to and from in the foster program never being able to make a a solid ground for herself. Years later after losing her husband she is now back to feeling all alone again.

That will change for her with a little help from her friend Sophie who has been her rock and someone that she has been able to seek friendship and comfort from.

Sophie takes Liz out to Braxton's bar one night and there is an instant attraction between Braxton and Liz and this is where the story take flight.

Braxton too was broken and all that he worried about besides his business is his aliing mother and her health and care. Now that Liz has come into Braxton's life the queston is can these two lost souls Start from Broken again with their lives.

This was an enjoyable stand alone book and the characters were well written with alot of depth including the secondary characters Sophie and Travis by the author.

Good Read.

Wow, just wow! The beginning of the book started out crazy intentionally. I was teary eyed. We meet Liz as she is trying to pick out the dreaded funeral dress. Liz makes a poor decision in the prologue but it's written with some much emotion that you can't help but feel her pain.

Liz struggles with life and finding herself again. Liz is a strong character that has been through a lot. Through out the story I kept wishing that life would give Liz a break and she would finally get some happiness.

Braxton doesn't have relationships, he's to busy with running his bars and caring for his mother. Liz catches his attention. Braxton and Liz both have stuff to deal with. Their relationship provided for a roller coaster of a read. There were some times that I really just wanted to scream at Braxton but Sophie (Liz's best friend) took care of that and yelled at him.

Starting from Broken tells the love story of two lost souls - Liz and Braxton.

Liz is learning to live without her husband after his death two years prior. Braxton is unable to commit to any woman except that of his sick mother. He is a player who finds his conviction of not getting attached to any woman being tested with Liz. When both their paths keep crossing they are finding it hard to ignore what fate seems to have in store for them.

The story then unfolds of their developing relationship with lots of pitfalls and angst intermixed with a touch of sensuous romancing.

I did find at times the storyline to be a little slow going and the coincidence that is revealed was an overstretch of believability and really not needed in my opinion.

However, overall it was a nice romance and an enjoyable read that kept me routing for the pair right to the happy ending.

Here’s a quote that I love in the book and sums it up perfectly. “There are second chances in life. Never be scared to take them and always give them, cause without them, you might be missing out on what we meant to be.”
Liz, has been living in a haze for two years after having her husband passed overseas. She is focused on her work and nothing else. She finds this letter and it changes how she sees her life. Braxton is bent on proving himself to his mother and taking care of her. His father was abusive towards his mom and took the blame for it. Liz is determined to change her life and with the help of her friend Sophie, she lands her eyes on Braxton. They constantly see each other all the time but Braxton is afraid to get close cause most girls want to change him. Liz, is different and changes his way of thinking. She loves his mom and grows to love him. I will warn you that Braxton is major jerk throughout most of the book but redeems himself towards the end.

At about 52 percent I thought a root canal would be more fun than finishing this book. However, if there is one thing I'm not, it's a quiter. So I persevered on, but it didn't get better. I never connected with the characters and they never made are me want to. One second Braxton can't get away from her fast enough and the next he introduces her to Mommy and tells her he loves her...just no. Then add Sasha. First, it's unrealistic to think that he reads a note about a Sasha and automatically knows it's the same one he knows, and secondly, it's not likely that both he and Jacob would be with the same woman. I know it's fiction but come on! And how did Jacob even die? That's probably a better story than this one. This is time out of my life that I will never get back, and I feel as if I have been robbed!

Overall I found this book was good and easily read. I liked the characters and the different dynamics that they brought to the table. With that being said I also felt it had potential to be better. The drama was interesting as were the characters and the situations they found themselves in but at times the delivery fell flat. Sasha's initial physical introduction was not clear to me and her final appearance was abruptly dismissed and I felt it could have been explored more to build the drama especially since she plays a major role in the drama. Jade and Barbara were important characters as was their role in building some sort of relationship with Liz but were just there. These were just some things I wished were explored more but overall I enjoyed the read.

Good plot, but slow

The conversations come back to me when I'm think back on this book. I skipped through quite a few because they were so mind-numbing I couldn't stand it. How are you? I'm fine, how are you. I'm just really busy. Me too.
Not sure if it was too real-life or just random conversations that didn't move the storyline along, but by 80%, I was skipping whole pages.
On the bright side, there was a happy ending and colorful secondary characters, and very few, if any, grammatical errors.

very good, didn't expect..

Didn't expect all the different turns in this one. The beginning threw me for a loop to say the least; I easily settled into reading this one and enjoyed it to the end. This book is one of those easy reads where you don't feel like you are on drugs trying to read it, but more like ' this book is good, I want to read more, and really enjoy and soak it all up'. It was nice and not boring at all :)

Loved this!

I really enjoyed this, started off so emotional and broken and it was ahhhhh. I love a broken read. Then Liz begins to live her life again slowly and meets Braxton, who I adore, he has his issues though, and together, well, life isn't easy, but this was an easy book to read, get emotionally attached to the characters and enjoy. Will be reading more from F.T.
