Something Like Love

I became a fulltime writer in 1995, but I’ve been writing ever since I can remember. From short – very short – stories as a child to the usual excruciating poetry as a teenager: I’ve probably being putting words on paper for almost half a century now. What a thought.
As a child, it took me a few years to learn that there was a difference between reading and writing. For me, if you loved books, then of course you were going to try and write your own. But that was an almost impossible ambition in the Ireland where I grew up. I did the next best thing: the thing that kept me closest to books. I became a teacher, and I taught, very happily, for seventeen years. I loved teaching and still very much enjoy the Creative Writing workshops that I often facilitate.
But writing increasingly became a compulsion, almost an obsession. Nothing else satisfied in the way that writing satisfied, and so I continued to attempt poetry, short stories, non-fiction essays, honing my craft, serving my apprenticeship, until I finally finished my first novel, In the Beginning.
In the Beginning was published in 1997 and was very well-received, both critically and popularly. It was translated into several languages and went on to be shortlisted for the ‘Bancarella’ – the Italian booksellers’ prize.
A Name for Himself followed a year later, and was short listed for the Kerry Fiction Prize.
Between 2000 and 2014, I have published seven further novels: The Walled Garden, Another Kind of Life, Something Like Love, At a Time Like This, Set in Stone, Missing Julia and The Things We Know Now.
My non-fiction book, An Unconsidered People was published in 2003.
I’ve also written short stories and non-fiction pieces for various publications, among them Moments, Travelling Light, and Irish Girls about Town.
I receive a lot of requests to discuss various aspects of the creative process: the role played by inspiration, imagination, dedication and craft. I can’t answer all of these questions individually, so part of this website has been dedicated to a ‘Readers’ Forum’ in order to attempt to answer the most frequently-asked questions.

La Dunne riesce sempre a toccare le corde giuste per coinvolgere il lettore e descrive con grande sensibilità i rapporti familiari e le loro complesse dinamiche, è sempre un piacere leggere i suoi libri.

Come il precedente romanzo, in cui si parla della conclusione del matrimonio di Rose e Ben, del suo abbandono e delle reazioni dei tre figli, anche L'amore o quasi è un pugno dritto nello stomaco. Perché, dopo quasi otto anni, Ben, non pago di aver lasciato la sua famiglia in mezzo ai guai - soprattutto Rose, che ha persino dovuto combattere con i tre figli, che avevano scaricato il dolore dell'abbandono sull'unico genitore disponibile, ovvero la madre - si ripresenta alla porta di Rose per "chiudere" la loro storia, cioè ottenere non solo il divorzio (cosa a cui Rose avrebbe dovuto provvedere prima), ma anche un indennizzo, ora che Rose ha un'attività di successo con cui è riuscita anche a pagare le rate del mutuo della casa che lui, essendo svanito nel nulla, ha lasciato completamente nelle sue mani.
La rabbia è davvero tanta, ma Rose, anche grazie ai consigli del suo avvocato, riesce a gestirla e a non prendere a pugni e schiaffi quel disgraziato di Ben. Cosa che io avrei voluto fare al posto suo, sia in La metà di niente che in questo romanzo!
Mi ha un po' deluso il finale, che mi è sembrato troppo frettoloso, quando invece avrei davvero preferito

This is a really good read. Eight years ago Rose's husband walked out on her and her three children and was never heard from again, until now when he is back wanting to "regularise matters" between them. The story tells the effect his return has on Rose and her children in a very gripping way. As I was reading it I just wanted to shout out advice to Rose! The book is extremely well written and the story moves fluidly with good, well drawn characters who behave and speak in believable ways. They are normal people who are, for the most part, likeable but caught up in a situation that will strike a chord with a lot of readers who have stood in the shoes of Rose and her family.
It was very easy to get sucked into Rose's world and I was quite sad to get to the end of the story. Highly recommended.

Letto. Non avevo mai letto ancora nulla di questa autrice, che in questo periodo è assurta agli onori della cronaca grazie alla citazione di un suo libro che ha fatto la moglie di Berlusconi nella sua "lettera" al marito pubblicata su un famoso quotidiano (no comment!).
Non posso dire che non mi sia piaciuto ma neanche posso dire che la protagonista della storia sia a me così vicina, soprattutto mi è sembrata una madre perfetta, con le parole sempre giuste al momento giusto verso i figli, misurata e contenuta, quando a me piace di più la madre imperfetta, incazzata e che qualche volta non sa quello che dice e si lascia andare...

La Dunne è solita trattare storie di famiglia, ma ho preferito "La metà di niente".
La scrittura è buona ma la storia non è poi così avvincente, a volte ridondante nelle descrizioni degli stati d'animo. Ha scritto libri migliori.

Dopo “La metà di niente”, ci voleva un prosieguo. Che fine avrà fatto il marito traditore che 8 anni fa aveva abbandonato la famiglia? E Rose, la protagonista, come se la sarà cavata? Non resistendo alla curiosità, ho voluto leggere anche questa puntata, e come per il romanzo precedente confermo il mio debole gradimento. Una lettura semplice, senza grande impegno, sostenuta dai buoni sentimenti e dall’ immancabile lieto fine.

This book has been sat in my shelves for some time. I’ve just had a sort out of my books and this one spoke to me.
I wasn’t sure what to expect as I hadn’t read any from this author before.
I really enjoyed it! It kept me engaged all the way through. I found Rose to be such a lovely character who was going through a really emotional and upsetting time.
It felt so real that her kids weren’t angelic teenagers and they’d been through their own angst, and Rose had worked her way through with them.
I’ve been in Amazon and ordered some more of Catherine Dunne’s books!

Romanzetto rosa, per certi aspetti un pò inverosimile, ma scritto molto bene.

I very much enjoyed this book and read it very quickly. However, I felt that things were wrapped up too easily and the romance was a bit too sweet.

1º livro: Nunca É Tarde Para Recomeçar (10-14 Nov 2022)
O “Nunca É Tarde para Recomeçar” é a primeira parte de uma sequela lançada por Catherine Dunne a que se junta depois o “A Outra Face do Amor” - brevemente com review também por aqui. Já andavam ambos há anos na minha estante e já tinha começado a ler na época, porém nunca tinha acabado, e então foi em novembro que lhes decidi dar uma nova oportunidade!

E foi ao escrever esta book review que me dei conta que tenho que as escrever na hora que acabo de ler o livro! Por conseguinte, também o acabei em novembro e só estou a escrever esta review em janeiro, o que faz com que já não me lembre da narrativa a 100%.

Este livro parte de uma separação conjugal entre Rose (personagem principal) e Ben, pois num dia de manhã em que Rose prepara o pequeno almoço, Ben chega à cozinha e diz que já não gosta dela. A partir daí, Rose terá uma vida difícil, pois vê-se em conflito para ganhar dinheiro, pois toda a sua vida foi passada em casa, ao mesmo tempo que tenta conciliar o crescimento dos seus 3 filhos e dar-lhes o melhor.

Os capítulos são alternados. Enquanto num capítulo decorre a história atual - ou seja, a vida de Rose desde o momento da separação com Ben -, no outro decorre a história do passado - todo o processo de “construção” da relação entre o casal. Para mim, isto resulta num sentimento agridoce, pois apesar de ser interessante, acho que continuo a preferir aqueles livros em que a história segue uma ordem cronológica de acontecimentos.

Por fim, se tivesse que resumir este livro em duas palavras, talvez atribuísse força e família. A força de Rose foi notada e tudo isso foi feito em prol das suas crianças.

Este livro é a segunda parte da saga já lançada anteriormente com o “Nunca é Tarde para Recomeçar”.

Também lido em novembro, porém demorei imenso tempo para o ler em relação à minha média de leitura; não sei se talvez por estar a atravessar uma ressaca literária - a que já vos falei anteriormente - ou se pela forma como a história do mesmo se desenvolve.

Neste exemplar, já se pode encontrar um pouco mais de linguagem técnica, o que pode acabar por não cativar tanto o leitor, porém achei mais interessante do que o primeiro com vários pontos a contribuir para tal, entre eles a luta de Rose para manter a educação e crescimento dos filhos como única figura parental, o sucesso de Rose através do seu trabalho e a relação com Sam.

Literalmente, “a outra face do amor”, que nos mostra que há sempre esperança e vale a pena tentar caminhos diferentes.

La protagonista della storia è di nuovo Rose, la donna che ne "La metà di niente", aveva saputo ricostruire la sua vita dopo l'abbandono del marito Ben. Superata la catastrofe matrimoniale, Rose ha saputo reinventare una nuova esistenza per sé e per i tre figli. Ma la vita la attende a un altro appuntamento: quando Ben si ripresenta, dopo diversi anni di separazione, Rose non sa come affrontarlo, non capisce cosa lui voglia e perché. E anche i suoi figli lo guardano con sentimenti molteplici e ambigui, seppure segnati inevitabilmente dall'ostilità. Ben rimette in discussione tutto il mondo che Rose aveva faticosamente e quotidianamente ricostruito...
Mi è piaciuto da morire!
Non per la trama (forse un pochino scontata) ma perché Rose ero io!
Eccetto la questione del divorzio, in tutto il resto mi sono riconosciuta in pieno.
Rose ha 50 anni, è un'età di cambiamenti, è un periodo della vita dove i bilanci sono pressoché giornalieri, dove si ha voglia di uscire dai panni troppo stretti di "mamma", dove si ha voglia di rimettersi in gioco e a volte ci si sente ragazzine anche quando ci si spalma con l'antirughe "extra-strong".
Mi sono riconosciuta nelle pagine dove Rose si smarrisce nella scelta dei sentieri giusti da percorrere con i figli adolescenti, delle notti dove ci si sente madri inadeguate e ci si chiede se quello che abbiamo imposto è giusto davvero.
Il peso che si porta quando siamo sempre e comunque i primi scogli su cui si infrangono le onde-ragazzi, perché i padri lavorano fino a tardi e quindi, che ci piaccia o no, le emergenze sono tutte nostre..
La fatica di capire un mondo che, nonostante tutto, ci sfugge, ma in cui vogliamo muoverci senza rimanerne escluse, la gioia di avere un lavoro che piace anche se è faticoso gestire tutto...
La Dunne è riuscita ha rendere ancora una volta la protagonista credibile, tratteggia una donna forte, che lotta, che non ha paura di mettersi in gioco e che è capace di trarre sempre il meglio dal peggio.

Great book, well written. Rose and her 3 children are shocked when her husband returns 8 years after walking out on them. He wants to reconcile with his children, but more importantly for him, he wants a share of what he believes is rightfully his.
I got involved with the characters and wanted to shout at Rose not to let the husband 'win'! Felt some parts of the book weren't really relevant to the story and I wouldn't have missed these if they had been left out.
Would definitely recommend this book!

This is the first of Catherine Dunne's books I've read and am looking forward to reading more.
In this book, the author has such a wonderful understanding of a teenager/young adult's split personality. I could identify with the children.
Rose's husband Ben of 20 years suddenly ups and leaves her and their 3 young children. She's reared them herself, kept a roof over their heads and worked day & night with her own catering business to do so. 8 years later Ben turns up on her doorstep wishing to regulate their situation. What can she do?

I liked the premise of this book but I struggled to find sympathy with rose the main character. I found her unbelievable and 8 years too late in her actions. As a mother of teenagers I was interested to see how she handled her kids an again I found her wanting. She had a lack of sympathy with her eldest child. Her lack of anger towards her ex was somewhat unbelievable. And even within her business she lacked confrontation when being ripped off. It was a quick and easy read though

When I was walking through the library in Huskvarna, where I live, I was looking for something simple and easy-going to fit my currently "distracted" state of mind. Something I did not need to think too much about while reading. I came across this book. And that was just it. It was nice, I did not need to think but also it was easy to forget, it did not make a big difference nor did it leave any special feelings after. But it was, nice, and just what I needed at the time!

Nao achei piada (o tema também não tem graça nenhuma, mas prontos... ) , não vi sentido nenhum para a escrita deste livro, não consegui perceber a moral da história. Trata-se de uma mulher abandonada e traída, por um marido que não vale um tostão, nem lhe dá um tostão, e ela vê-se obrigada a seguir em frente com 3 filhos para criar...e? ... não consegui ter qualquer sentimento perante este livro, e ainda li 2 livros pelo meio da leitura deste por isso já podem imaginar ...

Che peccato che questo libro sia stato scritto.
E che peccato averlo letto.
Chi, come me, conservava il ricordo di Rose ("La metà di niente") come una donna speciale, toccante nella sua fragilità come nel suo coraggio, qui si ritrova a fare i conti con una figura di donna del tutto comune, a volte patetica e spesso scontata... Deludente.

Chi, come me, conservava il ricordo di Rose ("La metà di niente") come una donna speciale, toccante nella sua fragilità come nel suo coraggio, qui si ritrova a fare i conti con una figura di donna del tutto comune, a volte patetica e spesso scontata... Deludente.

Your husband returns after 8 years, having provided no financial support. What's he up to? Can any good come of it? I found this quite engaging. I was interested to see how the characters coped with the reappearance of the absentee husband/father.

Excellent book. It kept coming up as a recommended read for me. I fell into the story quickly and enjoyed it. The ending tied up nicely and it was interesting to see the relationships between the characters.

Nice wee story, lovely characters especially Rose! I really started to love the story as the relationship between Rose and Sam changed to something more. I was glad they got together :)
