Mormon/Dom #1

The Mormon and the Dom

Rate this book
He didn’t know what he needed until he found it… Disillusioned Dom Ronan Porter has hung up his whips and chains. Longing for someone who needs submission as much as he craves control, Ronan realizes he’s become just another way for self-loathing gay men to get off. Done with the lifestyle, he buries himself in work. But when a blond, blue-eyed innocent requests his services, he can’t resist the challenge. Repressed Mormon Noah Cameron has always known he was different. When he discovers the leather-clad world of BDSM, he’s intrigued, and desperate to submit. Noah seeks out a Dom to show him the literal and figurative ropes. But dark, sexy Ronan exceeds Noah’s wildest fantasies. He sees right through Noah’s fears and dares him to surrender completely. Falling in love is easy. But staying there takes work. When a savage attack lands him in the ICU, Noah is caught between his deeply religious family and his devoted Dom. With so much pushing them apart, it will take more than courage to stand together. It will demand everything they have.

Okay, so two confessions: I was raised mormon, and lived in Utah for like 9 years while in school and such, so I have this rather morbid fascination with reading books with mormon characters. It's always interesting to see which authors have either experienced it or bothered to do research.

Second, the title of this made me expect a kinky little short that used the extreme contrast between mormonism and BDSM to add shock value and maybe add to the kinkiness.

I absolutely didn't expect an insightful, honest, and beautifully hopeful journey with Noah as he finally gave himself permission to be himself and stop living his life trying to meet others' expectations.

The first half of this book won me over so thoroughly I was captivated. I've never known another person who has understood so completely just how it feels to be a mormon living in mormon country who doesn't quite fit in. How you feel watched everywhere you go, everyone either already judging you or waiting for you to make one misstep to reveal all of the differences they can judge you for. The very real consequences that can impact both you and your family if anyone finds out you don't fit the merry mormon mold.

That Noah was able to recognize that he wasn't happy and was brave enough to be willing to make necessary changes to his life was inspiring. And I loved that this story wasn't the angst-fest that the story line had the potential to be. Noah was ready for change, so he didn't beat himself up over it and torture both himself and Ronan.

Ronan. He was fantastic! Strong enough to satisfy the part of me that went into this story expecting a kinky BDSM story, but also sweet enough to completely satisfy the part of me that adores sappy fluff. I loved how patient he was with Noah, how supportive, and how relentlessly zen and optimistic.

Such a refreshingly hopeful, honest, inspiring start to their story!

The second half of the book, though...

I enjoyed the first half of this enough, though, that I can't give this less than four stars.

Favorite Quotes:
He wasn't a control freak, he was a control enthusiast.

"I'm only the boss of you when you give me permission."

"But I've got this hunger for cock."

Love made him intensely vulnerable. If Noah didn't feel the same, it was going to kill him. But Ronan let that concern pass. Noah was here now. No matter what Ronan did, he couldn't make him stay. The only thing he could do was give him every reason to want to stick around.

That was the difference. He wasn't doing what other people expected. He was doing what he needed to do for himself.

Oh sweet little Mormon Noah has such a naughty side waiting to be freed and Ronan is just the type of Dom to bring it out in him. I really liked that Ronan had to work for what he truly wanted to have with Noah as the reward was absolutely worth it. Great book, H.E.A. was awesome!

“Noah was light in coloring with his blond corn-silk hair and cornflower-blue eyes.” .....so who is that dude on the cover?
Also don't taunt me with a badass Dom and not deliver ~kinky girl pout~

What an enjoyable book. I had not heard of the story until I heard a panelist at a gay book conference recommend it as a great story. They were right.

The story begins very strong. The first portion of the book is powerful as it introduces us to the two main characters and the personal issues they each have. Noah is an adorable character who has been so repressed, shoved into a cookie cutter of what his parents and family expect life to be. The only problem is that Noah doesn't fit the standard heterosexual male cookie cutter. Going along with what his parents want and expect is killing the real Noah. This is the story of the unique way Noah decides to finally let the real him peak out for a short time.

The author is a good writer and has given us a rich story with characters that are so well developed. While reading this book, I was so engaged with the story that I hated to put it down. When my spouse dragged me off to the grocery story to help shop for the week, I carried the book along and read while waiting in line to check out. I stayed up too late at night reading it, got up early to read it, and couldn't wait to see where the author took the characters.

The second half isn't as strong as the first half, but it is unrealistic to expect the entire story to be as strong as the first half. Had it been as strong all the way through it probably would have been exhausting to read instead of so enjoyable.

This was a 3.5 star thisclose to a 4. Having grown up in Mormon country, this title was like catnip to me, I couldn't NOT take a look. I kind of expected something a little tawdry or sensational, but The Mormon and the Dom was actually a very sweet story. The portrayal of Mormons was extremely accurate. The smutty bits were fun, too.

Overall I liked both Ronan and Noah very much, but unfortunately, their voices got suppressed occasionally and subverted into soapboxes for the author to lecture the reader. A certain amount was necessary for veracity -- after all, Noah is new to the scene, but it's unlikely that the reader is! Nor am I a fan of kink-as-therapy, but that's probably just me.

A few reviews indicated that this book had a lot of errors, typos, needed editing, etc. As a proud Grammar Nazi, I can say I don't know what those reviewers are talking about. I'm guessing the book has been re-edited at some point, because I saw only a handful of typos. Certainly not enough to be distracting.

I very much liked this story. I would have given it five stars, except the themes sort of changed abruptly after the halfway mark. It wasn't that I didn't like the health and interpersonal challenges Noah faced, but... I really wished there was more exploration of the kink side of things, and showing more of healing through kink.

All in all, though, I thought this was a nice debut novel and I will definitely check out more by the author.

Serious lack of editing, which was annoying. Blurb suggested bigger role for BDSM, which just wasn't there...

I enjoyed this story. I really liked the characters. I thought they were really sweet together. Ronan especially won me. The relationship moved pretty quick, but that's not uncommon in romance novels. I liked the themes of finding love and acceptance- not only from others but from oneself- and being true to oneself. Having a Mormon character was interesting, as I've never read of one. The BDSM wasn't anything too deep- which I was fine with as it's not really my thing (but I was intrigued enough by the premise of the book to pick it up). Storyline kept me interested and had some dangers to raise the stakes. 4 stars

Not my favorite

I've really liked the other books by this author. The Firefighter and the Pyro was my very favorite. I felt like this story got shortchanged. If you were looking for vanilla BDSM, this is your book. It barely touched on it. The love aspect was too fast. They saw each other three times in a period of about a month and Ronan was talking about Noah moving in. Granted, it was prompted because of Noah's neighbor but he wanted it to be permanent. It was insta-love. Also, Noah's whole personality changed in the same time frame. He went from a completely self conscious, utterly virginal innocent, to abruptly changing his whole life, quitting his job and coming out to his parents.

There was also some self hatred, about being gay, expressed by both characters. It was understandable, for Noah to feel like that, growing up Mormon, but made no sense for Ronan. Maybe he was referring to his Dom proclivities, but that wasn't clear. The latter part of the book was at least more realistic. Building the trust and acceptance of Noah's parents, Noah trying to send Ronan away, made more sense. But then the rest of Noah's recovery and an entire year was wrapped up in a few paragraphs. The writing was still good, the story was nice, it just felt incomplete.

This one started out good, then it got gripping and then the author dropped the ball. I cannot begin to explain how disappointed I was with the ending because I really loved Noah and Ronan. The author just kept piling things on top of things until it just got unbelievable. As for their relationship, I'm not convinced that they are together as equals as there wasn't enough foundation established before the incident with Noah that’s now left him somewhat dependent on Ronan. If Noah had recovered fully, then they would be on equal footing in their relationship. I was happy the bad guy got what he deserved even if it wasn’t as satisfying if it’d happen because of the Noah incident.

The whole time I was reading this book I felt a sense of déjà vu ... the plot was like a pale echo of a story previously read ... this book had potential but didn't really deliver ... Ronan was a Dom but just didn't really have credibility despite all his toys and props ... the smex was meh too ... I finished the book but I doubt I'll ever re-visit it ... there are worse books out there but this one left me wanting.

This book was surprise. It isn't the heavy BDSM playroom style book. It was about finding the courage to be true to yourself and building the life you want on our own terms. It was also about commitments - loving someone through better and worse - walking with them through the entire journey not just when things are smooth and easy going. Ronan was patient and kind helping Noah ever step of the way.

3.5 stars. A lovely sweet book though a tad insubstantial. The characters move through all the doubts, angst and drama just a little too easily and everyone's just a little too understanding. Still the take and bdsm was good (mild but actually much more realistic than many in the genre) and didn't overtake the storyline. Overall it was an enjoyable read.

I couldn't not read this with that title. But I wasn't impressed. The plot was awkward and ill connected, the characters clunky and stiff. I couldn't understand why they were interested in one another beyond BDSM, as I could hardly keep my focus.

If it has one good thing going for it, is that the two men actually negotiated kinks and limits, so that's something?
