They loved each other desperately. Never in all the kingdom has there been a more brave and protective champion. Nor such a loyal and capable maiden. He rescued her the first time when she was three years old in a killing storm. Years later, he was still occasionally rescuing her. 'Twas in him to be a hero, and she had a pure intrepid way of getting into the kinds of scrapes that took rescuing. With such a brawny, masculine guardian around, 'twould have been a fair pity to waste the gallantry anyway. Their childhood friendship between two young peasants had grown into a devotion few are ever blessed to experience. It was strong enough to withstand all their dark age held—danger, feudalism, disease, and unfair oppression. Or is it strong enough? They truly loved each other desperately. They loved their kingdom more.
Jaclyn M. Hawkes grew up in Utah with 6 sisters, 4 brothers and a large number of pets. (It was never boring!)
She got a bachelor’s degree, had a career, and traveled extensively before settling down to her life’s work of being the mother of four magnificent and sometimes challenging children. She loves shellfish, the out of doors, the youth, and hearing her children laugh.
She and her fine husband, their family, and their sometimes very large pets, now live in a mountain valley in northern Utah, where it smells like heaven and kids still move sprinkler pipe.
I received this book from the author in exchange for an honest review
Warrior's Moon is a perfect example of a great cover sparking my interest. After seeing this beautiful cover and reading the blurb, I was hooked. As I started reading, I realized that this novel reads quite a bit like high fantasy. It starts out when main character Chantaya is three, and follows her as she grows into a young woman.
I loved Chantaya's character. She is so refreshing, free-spirited in a time that frowned upon such things. Perhaps she's like this because her mother is such a good person, or maybe because her best friends, Peyton and Tristan accept her for who she is. Whatever the reason, she is beautiful inside and out. Chani is a source of never-ending grief for poor Peyton who worries more and more as she reaches adulthood.
Peyton is an amazing male lead. At times he was just too good to be true, Loyal, handsome, brave, generous—these are just some of his traits. Peyton and Chani make a great couple. It's impossible to not root for them to find happiness in their lives. I almost cried when Peyton left the small village to become a knight. But some things are just meant to be, and Peyton was destined to be a knight.
This is not my normal read, yet I still enjoyed it quite a bit. The story is as old as time, but the characters really make this novel different. Warrior's Moon is a clean read, though some of the subject matter is more suitable for an older audience. My recommendation is high school and up. If you enjoy a sweeping fantasy romance set during Medieval times, add this to your TBR list.
Oh. My. Goodness. One of her best. The story was amazing. Loved the main characters. I do, however, wish there was more of a clear ending but other than that this was solid gold.
I love, love, loved this book!!!!!! It was clean, and wonderful from beginning to the end. I will try very hard not to give too much away, but I honestly loved this book, so I want to talk about each of the characters that I enjoyed.
Isabella Kincraig- The woman amazes me. She goes through so much in her life to keep her daughter safe. She is strong, and beautiful. She is willing to do whatever it takes to keep her family safe. LOVED her!
Chantaya Kincraig - Isabella's daughter. She is by far my favorite character. This girl is A MAY ZING! She goes through a lot in her little life at the very beginning you cannot help but love her. What I love most about her is that she is strong through the WHOLE book. She never backs down from what she believes in and always fights for what is right. A heroine that never wimps out. I LOVED her!
Peyton Wolfgar - He is a beautiful human being. He is kind, loving, caring, and a protector. He is another character that is great from beginning to the end. The sweetest boy, and then the sweetest man. He is what every girl should strive to find in a man. His love for Chani is so great. It made me cry a few times! I LOVED him!!!!!
The rest of the Wolfgar Family - such great people. They took a woman and her child in with only the intention of helping and bringing them back to heath. A compassionate and caring family. Strong and had lots of love for every one.
Sir Mordecai - A Knight...Need I say more? He is an old Knight who builds a stone cottage in the woods to live out the rest of his life in solitude. He soon finds a family in the Wolfgar family and the Kincraigs. He is honorable, strong, and a Knight! Like I said earlier..."need I say more?" :)
Prince Laird & King Dougal - Good, honorable men who wanted the best for their kingdom. They treated everyone with respect, and held those who fought for their kingdom in high esteem. I loved that the King and the Prince listened to others information and didn't just make decisions based on what they wanted. They always did what was best for the whole.
Conrad - I just love him. He watched over Isabella and Chani when Peyton couldn't and was just an all around good guy. Sweet, caring, watchful, and protective.
Okay, now for the ones I didn't like, but really did make good "love to hate" characters!
Lord Rosskeene - I didn't like him from the moment he entered the book. I knew that he was going to be a horrible man. A nobleman who thought the world owed him everything. He thought he could take whatever he wanted without any consequence. He made me so angry even when his name was mentioned in this book.
Damian - Lord Rosskeene's son - was just like his wretched father. A horrible human being. He never had a good example to follow, but a horrible human being just the same.
Hawkes writing is beautiful. I loved every moment reading this book. I hated having to put it down. I loved the romance, the struggle, and most of all I loved that Chani was a strong woman from beginning to end. The love story is just the sweetest thing. I LOVE a good love story. I have VERY few books that I add to my "want to read again" list, but this one has definitely made that list. I think I could read it over and over and not get sick of it. It just was such a good, CLEAN, book!
Thanks Hawkes for your amazing writing and bringing such a sweet love story to life.
Chantaya was a beautiful inquisitive child and even more so as the years past. She suffered a great loss when she was 4 and her father was killed when their wagon over turned during a storm. They were fleeing Lord Rosskeene, because he kept insisting that her mother come work in his castle for his own pleasure. Her mother was almost killed that same night, but luckily she recovered shortly after.
Peyton Wolfgar found little Chantaya that night that the wagon over turned. He was just a child himself, but he cared for Chantaya there after and all the years following. He felt he was her protector. Through the years they were inseparable. He was constantly keeping her out of trouble and from mishaps.
She was no ordinary girl. Where most young ladies loved to sew, read and swooned over the sight of a bug. Chanta was inquisitive and courageous. She would rather be running in the woods and learning how to yield a sword. Peyton was constantly telling here she needed to behave more like a lady.
It was around her 15th year when things start to change. Peyton came to Chantayas rescue one night when a local boy was trying to take advantage of her. Peyton places a light kiss to her forehead, and she starts to look at him in a new light.
This ‘light kiss’ to the forehead is where the story picks up and takes off running. I don’t want to give anything else away so I will stop there. I enjoyed this book! This book held my attention right up to the very end.
The characters are courageous, and never confusing. The author did a wonderful job of ‘showing’ the story and not just telling. I felt I was right there with them the whole time! If you enjoy a good clean romance, with a few twist and turns and an unexpected ending, then this book is for you!
I love stories about princesses, but stories about knights are pretty much just as good, if not better--at least, in my opinion. I enjoyed the way the story started off, with Chantaya (LOVE her name) being a little, tiny girl. When her family was in an accident, they were rescued by Peyton's family and Chantaya immediately clung to Peyton. From that time on, she went where Peyton and his brother went and learned what they learned. I loved how they met Sir Mordecai and how kind and helpful he was. I loved watching Peyton grow into a man and loved how strong, valiant, and wonderful he was. How could a girl not fall completely in love with him? Chantaya is the kind of girl every girl dreams of being--absolutely beautiful, without realizing it, very nice, insanely brave, and a great cook. The ending took a turn that was a little surprising, but it was great. The romance that develops is so sweet and real, being tender, yet passionate. I just couldn't get enough--this one is definitely on my list of favorites.
Content: kissing, some fighting/violence, but not too graphic, a few very mild instances of language. Clean!
I have mixed emotions about this book and wonder if I would have enjoyed it more as an audio book where I could be doing something more than simply read. But in the end, perhaps it wouldn't have mattered. I gave it three stars, which to me indicates there is nothing morally wrong with the book, but not one I care to read again.
The story itself was a great idea but very poorly executed.
There was a lot of romance in it, but no "spark" between the couple. I wonder if it was because the author tried to imitate the speach of days gone by. Her use of 'Twas was completely overdone, as was 'Tis and a few others. I found it almost comical the way she dropped "ly" to make it sound like older English. For example, nearly was near, fairly was fair, and so on. At times I had to read a sentence twice to get what she was trying to say due to the sentence structure, and occasionally I just gave up and tried my best using surrounding context as a guide. I also found the she was inconsistant with her attempts at older English, sometimes trying to use it and others completely not.
As I said, a great idea with poor writing/editing and not one I will add to my "read again" list.
I love when I come to the end of a book and can just sigh because "love conquers all". So cheesy, I know. I thought this one was well written, clean, adventurous, fun, and romantic. Peyton was just a great Knight and Chantaya was a great mix of strength, boldness, character, and yet very feminine. I usually struggle when the heroine is so young, but Chantaya played her part well. I love that she was strong and could stand on her own and protect herself, yet was still willing to allow her Knight to be just that...her Knight. I think it would be fun to read the Prince's story now. He and the princess had a fun brother/sister relationship. Cute story!
This was set in a pre-regency era land with lords and ladies, knights, pages & royalty. I was a little skeptical since this is the first of hers set in this time period. I really enjoyed the main characters' relationship....once I got past her very unusual name! She is very much a tom boy who likes to hunt, sword fight and ride astride like a man. Her very best friend longs to become a knight. They have to work together to help save the kingdom. It was a sweet romance mixed with an adventure story.
This was an ok book for me, the cover threw me off and I expected a cheesy book but it was better then I thought it would be. I can't quite put my finger on it but something was off. I just didn't like the writing style and that is not the authors fault. I just lost interest and skimmed till the end. The first part of the book was cute and fun as they grew up together but once they were separated and the heroine started being the hero for some reason I just didn't want to read anymore. So I am giving it 3 stars because it might have been me and the mood I'm in lately.
A review I read on Amazon said it was a clean medieval romance with Christian overtones. That described this perfectly. I really think the author is LDS. There was one part in the book where one of the characters talked about pre-mortal type doctrine. I was surprised that a Christian author would include that. Then I read about the author. She is from Utah and had 10 brothers and sisters.
This is definitely not Jaclyn Hawkes' greatest writing. There were many times reading when I thought a good editor could have really made the story more enjoyable. That being said, I really liked the story line and thought the romance between the two main characters was enjoyable.
Sigh! What a fantastic book! First of all, the cover is absolutely gorgeous.
Isabella Kincraig is being pursued by Lord Rosskeene but she doesn't want anything to do with him. She's happily married with a 3-year-old daughter, Chantaya, and another child on the way. She and her husband take off with their daughter during a storm in the middle of the night and there's an accident. Chantaya quickly finds her father, who doesn't respond to her, and then she goes to search for her mother.
Close by, 8-year-old Peyton Wolfgar is having trouble sleeping. Through the lightening, he sees an overturned cart in the distance and tells his father. They take off to see if there are any survivors and if they can be of help. They quickly find Chantaya and her mother, who is barely breathing. They take Isabella and Chantaya home and nurse them back to health. Isabella gave birth a couple of days later, but the baby doesn't make it.
Peyton and his younger brother, Tristan, go on with life and Chantaya starts tagging along with them. They learn that Lord Rosskeene is searching for Isabella and are able to keep him away while she's recovering and then Isabella and Chantaya are able to move to a cottage where they can be somewhat hidden from anyone else who comes looking for them.
The years pass with Peyton and Chantaya being inseparable. They meet an old man who lives in the woods one day and learn that he is Sir Mordecai, a former knight. They become friends with him and enjoy learning more about him and spending time with him.
The time comes when Chantaya realizes she needs to start thinking about marriage so she sets out one day to determine which boy she would like to become involved with. That part was funny as she describes them and realizes how protected she's been through the years. When Peyton found out what she was doing, their conversation was entertaining and revealed a lot about what he was thinking. Big changes come for each of them as they decide the direction they each need to take. Their paths are filled with challenges and no guarantee that they will ever be with each other again.
I love everything about this book! Peyton and Chantaya are great together. I love their conversations and how safe I felt when he was around. Chantaya showed a lot of faith as she was put in dangerous situations yet she always found the good in them and was determined to do the right thing. They both knew what would happen if the king was overthrown and someone evil came into power, so they showed their willingness to do whatever it took to make sure that didn't happen. There are lots of characters to love and hate in this book. I cheered for some and hoped for the demise of others. This is a book I will read again and highly recommend it to everyone!
Jaclyn M. Hawkes in her new book, “Warrior’s Moon” published by Spirit Dance Books LLC introduces us to Chantaya Kincraig and Peyton Wolfgar.
From the Back Cover: They loved each other desperately.
Never in all the kingdom has there been a more brave and protective champion. Nor such a loyal and capable maiden.
He rescued her the first time when they were three years old in a killing storm. Years later, he was still occasionally rescuing her. ’Twas in him to be a hero, and she had a pure intrepid way of getting into the kinds of scrapes that took rescuing. With such a brawny, masculine guardian around, ’twould of been a pity to waste the gallantry anyway.
Their childhood friendship between two young peasants had grown into a devotion few are ever blessed to experience. It was strong enough to withstand all their dark age held—danger, feudalism, disease, and unfair oppression?
Or was it strong enough? They truly loved each other desperately. They loved their kingdom more.
Spies, knights and Medieval romance. What more can you ask for? Chantaya and Peyton are quite close to Lois Lane and Superman those these two actually have a romance. Then we have the bad guys and they are really bad. There is an attempt to take over the kingdom and those that can oppose this coup are small and in great danger. Excitement, intrigue, betrayal and honor are part of this wonderful story. And did I mention the romance? I think you will like this book a lot.

From the very beginning, Chantaya's story is full of heartbreak and hardship but it is also full of Peyton and that is the constant, sustaining force for good in her life.
Chantaya is a strong female lead character. I'm finding this is very typical for author Jaclyn Hawkes. Most of her female characters are over the top amazing heroin's and this is no exception. There is nothing Chantaya cannot do. She is an amazing cook, she can handle a sword and defend herself, she rides horses expertly, she is literate, smart, beautiful, and everyone loves her. She defends her country, works as a spy and has a good man to love her. Chantaya definitely has struggles and challenges that she faces, but she always faces them with strength and determination.
Peyton is everything a good knight should be. Loyal, brave and true. He loves Chantaya with everything he is. His role as protector started early when he save Chantaya from the wreckage of an awful accident. That role never stopped but increased in depth as they became friends. Peyton has always loved Chantaya. It was just meant to be.
There is action, intrigue and romance in this book. The secondary characters really complete and fill this story. I loved them. This is a clean romance and has Christian overtones.
I did not put the book down once I started reading it. The characters right off the bat go into your heart and stay their. I even shed a tear or two. I was not sure how much I would like it just by reading the blurb. I truly admire the characters.
The plot is simple a boy and girl growing up. Close friends till something else starts growing. They are kept apart while he learns to be a knight. But the story is so much more. So much richer in the characters. So willing to do the right thing for many than be selfish. Abuse of power by some. Others sacrifice.
It is full of humor, action, drama, of good and bad and wonderful characters. Of Knights and battles even a fancy masquerade ball with the Prince and Princess. It is also a clean read.
I was sad when the book was done because I wanted to enjoy it longer.
The setting is a time of small villages, ruled under powerful Lords who charge taxes of their tenants. With a good King in power. A time of Knights and horses.
This is my third book I have read now of Jaclyn M. Hawkes and I have loved all three of them. I will definitely read more books of hers in the future.
I was given this ebook to read and asked in return to give honest review of it and be part of its blog tour.
I wasn't expecting to like this book, and it took me a while to convince myself to read it (and to get into it), but I'm glad I did. I have a thing for medieval books, especially with a strong female lead. This was one of those, but it also had a strong male lead, which doesn't always happen together. While I love medieval books, I sometimes had to wonder if that is when this was really set. Occasionally the way things were said had me wondering, and sometimes the way the characters acted. Also, would people have known about harems? I mean, few could read and there was no printing press or anything...people didn't travel far, so...Anyway, it was a sweet story of love and duty. Don't read the description and decide about the book. Read other reviews and decide. The description can sometimes make a book sound better than it is, but in this case it's the opposite. The book was way better than what the back says it's about. Content wise Hawkes keeps it clean. She deals with not so pleasant topics, but does it tastefully. There is also some swearing, but it's used correctly (meaning she used the words to their actual definition) so maybe that makes it not really swearing. In any case, normally swearing really bothers me, but how it was used in this book didn't.
This is a book that has a beautiful maiden, a handsome hero, knight's, corrupt Lord's, court intrigue, and romance.
The book begins as Chantaya's parents flee from the corrupt son of their Lord. He thinks that he has a right to anything on his father's lands, even another man's wife.
Years pass, Chantay grows into a beautiful young woman who is fiercely loyal to her childhood protector, Peyton. They become the best of friends. He leaves her to become a Knight and fight to protect the Kingdom, She is beautiful and good. She has no idea of the effect her beauty causes to the young and old men around her. She is not pretentious. She is full of mischief, and just wants to be herself and not the young woman she is expected to be.
This book is a fun book to read. Chantaya is a very likable character. Her mother has taught her well. Peyton is honerable, almost to a fault. Their loyalty to each other and to their kingdom is one of their defining qualities that rule many of their decisions.
I have read several of Jaclyn Hawkes books and enjoyed each one. She writes well and her plot moves along without being drawn out.
This book has kissing and some violence. I found it to be a clean book.
This was a great read, fast and fun. I enjoy a good romance and this one is not only a good romance but one with a deep story and history to it. We start the book with a tragedy which kind of slaps you in the face a bit but in a way that gets your attention and pulls you into the book. From that point on you find yourself invested with the characters. Investment in the characters is key at least for me to enjoy any book.
I did feel the middle point dragged just a little bit, not enough to make me upset or turned away from the book, just the one point that kept me from giving 5 gems. Other then that this is a great read and I would highly recommend it. There are Christian themes but it is proper for the time period and does not as i like to say "over take the general message" of the book. Two thumbs up for Warrior's moon.
This was somewhere between a three and a four star book for me. I really, really loved what the author was saying in this book. The values of integrity, honor, sacrifice for a just and noble cause, and the value of freedom are really shown in this book. The love story was really good. I loved our hero's devotion. Worth reading.
I was looking for a cheesy romance and found this gem. The characters were developed well and the events seemed very believable. It's so easy for a book to have a spirited heroin but sometimes her character is too much. I liked Chantaya. Yes she was a little out of the box but I felt like her actions and attitude fit the time period unlike most female protagonists. The love story part was so sweet and realistic. The characters had a lot of faith in God. The story wasn't overtly religious in nature. The faith was there in a natural way. I wasn't surprised to find out the author is from Utah. It felt like an LDS author's writing. Just a clean well told story. I really liked it.
This is a GREAT book! I was slogging through the back story (definitely important, but still a bit long) until I got through the first 20% of the book. After that, I didn't want to put it down! Definitely a True Love Story, like Buttercup and Wesley, True Love. So sweet and tender. But, the fun doesn't end there, because the bad guy is despicable, and his son is no better. Chanti, the heroine, is super brave, cunning, and innocent to ways of the world, but she loves God and relies on Him. She's very inspiring. Her Hero, Peyton, is a great and wonderful young man. This is a perfect book for eighth grade and up. There is some kissing, but not over the top. LOVED IT.
This is a story about love. It is set in Medieval times. Isabella Kincraig is being stalked by the Lord's son, even though she is married. She and her family try to flee, but there is a terrible accident and Isabella's husband is killed and Isabella is wounded. She and her daughter, Chantaya, are taken in by a family who helps them. The Lord of the castle doesn't find her again for many years, and when he finds her, he says that she has to come work in his castle. Chantaya ends up spying for the king by listening to the Lord talk without his knowledge. I really liked this book.
Sooooo good. I could not put it down. Had me interested from page 1 till the end, and left me wanting an epilogue at least. Loved Chani & Peyton, their relationship and characters. The Christian aspects weren't overbearing and fit nicely in the story. Way to go Ms. Hawkes! My favorite of hers by far. Keep writing ones like this!!!
Moral Note: Some mild to heavy violence, some mild to heavy innuendos, some lustful thoughts and actions, a couple of hecks/dangs.
I have read about five of Hawkes' books and think she uses the English language really well and, aside from (often) a common plot line, I enjoy her books a lot. So I was really looking forward to this story that was clearly a departure from her usual story. Unfortunately, it just did not meet my (perhaps inflated) expectations. I really like Hawkes' heroines and heroes. This book was no different. I do not even know exactly what it needed to meet my expectations.
One of my most favorite things about this book is that it took place during the medival times. After reading "Sage After The Rain", I can tell that Jaclyn M. Hawkes has similar characters and names in her book. I love how Chantaya is a strong, loving, smart, and loyal lady. She makes the story so much more interesting with her personality. The action is awesome in this story. You are always on the tip of your toes whenever something happens. This book is amazing!
This was my first book by this author and I was not disappointed . From the first time they meet until the end I the book Peyton was ever her hero . Chantaya proves herself to be more than just a pretty face by rising to the challenges set before her. Together they endure friendship, hardships and occasional bad guys along the roads to their future. This book had faith , love , humor & tears all rolled in to one.
I really loved this book! I loved the relationship with the power couple, and the relationships with all of the other great characters in the story. It had all the essentials that I love in a book; adventure, romance strong characters that learn and grow from their experiences.... It was just a great read!
