Finally! I’m done!! It took me FOREVER to plow through this book. I really feel as if I’ve completed a semester of Spanish II. I wonder if my language arts transcript will be updated shortly.
This is yet another case in which I bought a book because I got a deal on Amazon. When am I every going to learn! I think they used a Vulcan mind-meld or something to compel me to buy this book. Maybe it was a one-day Kindle text book sale. I forget which tactic they used to pry $3 out of my hand.
Speaking of textbooks, this IS definitely a textbook. Not for the faint of heart. This is for hard-core, bi-lingual, grammar Nazis! If phrases like present subjunctive tense and gerund intimidate you, then stay far away from this book! Ms. Bregstein gives a pretty in-depth survey of the various verb tenses and gives technical guidelines about deploying these Spanish verbs.
I’m a beginning-to-intermediate, part-time, Spanish-speaking-wannabe. Learning Spanish is like a hobby for me. I thought that this book would help me remember how to conjugate verbs while increasing my verb vocabulary. However, this was perhaps a bit too advanced. It didn’t succeed in leaving me in the dust (or I wouldn’t have finished it) but I don’t think I retained as much material as I would’ve hoped.
Bregstein does an excellent job with the grammatically decomposition of verbs but her writing style wasn’t as friendly as Margarita Madrigal. Madrigal’s book was about 200 pages longer but the trip through it was more pleasant and was probably shorter. Bregstein’s book is one that I may occasionally reference during this trip through Spanish.
A couple of you may chastise me by saying “Dave, you idiot, are you serious about learning Spanish or not?” Not that serious! I want to have fun along the way. This was dry. It was the kid-version of eating your vegetables. Not to say that Ms Bregstein doesn’t know what she’s talking about – she very much does.
If you’re really serious about learning Spanish verbs and you’re very comfortable with navigating the deep grammatical waters, this book is for you. If Duolingo is more your speed, than pass.
This book was an incredibly helpful review tool in preparing to go abroad and study Spanish. It sharpened lessons and grammar that I had not seen for a good 6-8 years, and allowed me to move forward at a faster pace in my Spanish lessons abroad. I can still see using this book as a reference in the future. The exercises and explanations were highly effective.
Great books. Not just an enjoyable break from studying on a screen, these books cover so many important topics. Read, and read again.
Libros excelentes. No es solo un descanso agradable de las malditas pantallas, estos libros tratan todos los temas. Leer y volver a leer y estarás feliz como una lombriz.
This is an essential book to achieve the skill of reading Spanish literature effortlessly. Only certain Spanish vocabulary words/idioms are now the challenge for full comprehension.
