Though relatively tame by today's standards, they were considered pornographic when published, and for a long time she refused to disclose the titles she wrote under these pseudonyms.
Her 1958 story The Planet Savers introduced the planet of Darkover, which became the setting of a popular series by Bradley and other authors. The Darkover milieu may be considered as either fantasy with science fiction overtones or as science fiction with fantasy overtones, as Darkover is a lost earth colony where psi powers developed to an unusual degree. Bradley wrote many Darkover novels by herself, but in her later years collaborated with other authors for publication; her literary collaborators have continued the series since her death.
Bradley took an active role in science-fiction and fantasy fandom, promoting interaction with professional authors and publishers and making several important contributions to the subculture.
For many years, Bradley actively encouraged Darkover fan fiction and reprinted some of it in commercial Darkover anthologies, continuing to encourage submissions from unpublished authors, but this ended after a dispute with a fan over an unpublished Darkover novel of Bradley's that had similarities to some of the fan's stories. As a result, the novel remained unpublished, and Bradley demanded the cessation of all Darkover fan fiction.
Bradley was also the editor of the long-running Sword and Sorceress anthology series, which encouraged submissions of fantasy stories featuring original and non-traditional heroines from young and upcoming authors. Although she particularly encouraged young female authors, she was not averse to including male authors in her anthologies. Mercedes Lackey was just one of many authors who first appeared in the anthologies. She also maintained a large family of writers at her home in Berkeley. Ms Bradley was editing the final Sword and Sorceress manuscript up until the week of her death in September of 1999.
Probably her most famous single novel is The Mists of Avalon. Esta parte es, quizás, la menos intensa e interesante porque Ginebra está muy pesada y la chiquilla es desquiciante. Eso sí, lo que viene promete... ¡A por el desenlace! 😍

Out of the four books that make up The Mists of Avalon, this one is my least favorite. There was too much of Gwenhwyfar and her whining, and almost nothing of Avalon itself. Morgaine loses her sense of herself in the real world and is tricked into marrying old King Uraines of Wales. There was almost nothing of the strong women that encompasses the rest of The Mists of Avalon.

Τρίτο μέρος και πάλι μισές δουλειές γίνονται. Το βιβλίο ξεκινάει με έναν πολύ ενδιαφέρον τρόπο βάζοντας στη συνταγή κάποιες από τις ιστορίες του μυθολογικού κύκλου του βασιλιά Αρθούρου που αφορούν κάποιος από τους ιππότες της στρογγυλής τραπέζης. Δυστυχώς όμως η συγγραφέας βιάζεται να ξεμπερδέψει με αυτές για να επιστρέψει στο κυρίαρχο θέμα που μας ταλαιπωρεί για τόσες εκατοντάδες σελίδες: αυτό της θρησκείας και συγκεκριμένα της διαμάχης παγανισμού και χριστιανισμού. Πιο μετά όμως κάτι πάει να γίνει καθώς μπαίνουμε στα πολιτικά παιχνίδια της εποχής, πάλι όμως διαπιστώνουμε ότι είναι απλά ένα ευχάριστο διάλειμμα καθώς τα προσπερνάμε στα γρήγορα και επιστρέφουμε στις θεολογικές αναζητήσεις. Ενδιάμεσα γίνεται και ένας πόλεμος αλλά πάλι δεν μας απασχολεί ιδιαίτερα. Στο τέλος όμως αφήνει κάποια περιθώρια για να έχουμε αγωνία για το τέλος καθώς αντιλαμβανόμαστε ότι στο τελευταίο μέρος θα γίνουμε μάρτυρες της τελευταίας μάχης.

Just finished re-reading this book and I really liked it and even saw it with different eyes. I'm happy that Morgaine finally got some sense into her head and started doing what was right. I still hate Gwenhwyfar so much... I truly hate her character. I loved going back to Avalon and I cried with in the Viviane scene! Can't wait to start the next and I'm going to miss Avalon when it ends.

Somos surpreendidos com algumas mortes inesperadas, alguns nascimentos importantes e a afirmação de Artur, enquanto rei atento e benevolente, mas acima de tudo, enquanto homem justo e de princípios.

O Gamo Rei é o terceiro livro de quatro no compilado da primeira obra.
O que me encanta na escrita da autora, é a simplicidade da história e ao mesmo tempo a complexidade dos personagens. Personagens intrigantes, com defeitos e qualidades e com as vidas tão entrelaçadas.
Acho maravilhoso como ela nos faz odiar a Gwen e ao mesmo tempo deixar a gente querendo saber mais do que vai acontecer com ela.
Já vou continuar logo com a leitura de O Prisioneiro da Árvore para ver como se desenrola essa história de vez.

In this volume I missed some of the magic that was present in the previous volumes. Morgaine has abandoned Avalon and renounced the Goddess and the life as a priestess. Therefore, there are few references to the Celtic culture, the Goddess and the mystique and power of Avalon. In this book it is more evident the presence of the Christian religion, which is gaining ground among the populations and their rulers, who adopt these beliefs and reject the pagan beliefs and rituals. Although it is interesting to see this transformation in Arthur's court and in Arthur himself, this book appealed less to me, in comparison to the previous books. Only at the end we have a glimpse of Avalon which got me hooked again.
It is curious to note that while Morgan has been, for centuries, viewed as a negative character, a witch, sorceress and Arthur's antagonist, that only wants to usurp his power, here Morgaine has a positive nature. The one character that appears as the "wicked woman", in my point of view, is Gwenhwyfar. Gwen is too obsessed with the Christian religion, with what is sin and evil, she also sees Morgaine as someone who only wants to harm her, and is envious and jealous and eventually becomes an annoying character. I think that she is the most obnoxious character in the entire book! But through them, Morgaine and Gwenhwyfar, we can have a glance of the two opposing faiths and of their struggle to assert themselves in a territory that, even with deeply rooted beliefs, ends up being absorbed by the coming of Christian faith.
Religions aside, I liked going back to the Arthurian world and the story of Morgaine, Arthur, Lancelet, Gwenhyfar and of the introduction of new characters like Elaine, Gwydion and Accolon. I like to see how the legend was transformed and adapted, and how Marion Zimmer Bradley alters some details in a way that they still make sense in the story. For me, this is an exciting world and it is interesting to see how it is so rooted in our imagination. I enjoyed this book, though not so as enthusiasticaly as the previous two, because it took me longer to read it, but I'm very curious to see how the final part of this story will be told.

En su día estaba colgadito de su saga de Darkover (Fantasía). Hace no mucho re-leí parte de uno de estos libros y me resultó simplón, pero como estoy manteniendo la nota que les puse en su día, pues queda la autora con una media fantástica de "8".
Tercer libro de la saga artúrica "Las nieblas de Avalon" que está muy bien, es una novelación distinta pero bien escrita. Lo de siempre de Arturo, Merlín y esa banda pero con otro toque, vamos. Y curiosamente este tercer libro (que en la edición que yo leí iba dividido en dos partes) me gustó incluso más que los dos anteriores.

Mais um livro desta saga fantástica. Adoro a personagem Morgana, perfeitamente fascinante. Irrita-me o Rei Artur, sempre a ser subjugado pela mulherzinha Gwenhwyfar que é muito religiosa e completamente contra outro tipo de cultos. Com vontade de ler rapidamente o próximo :)

Loved it. One of my favorite books, and I consider myself to be a pretty big Arthurian legend nerd. I've read this AND listened to it on audio (with Davina Porter - if you are going to get it as an audio book, I recommend her highly).

I liked this one but not as much as I did the previous book. I will blame Gwen because she steps on my nerve and I can't really stand her. Not sure if I like hating her or what because there are people that likes disliking someone. But I'm not sure.

El antagonismo entre Morgana de Avalon y la Reina Ginebra se hace más fuerte, los acontecimientos se suceden, pero su resolución queda en el aire para la cuarta y última parte de la saga. La calidad de las dos entregas anteriores se mantiene como una constante, así como los temas y el mensaje.

O terceiro volume d’As Brumas de Avalon prenuncia aquele que será o fim de Arthur ao explorar o surgimento de Gwydion, filho daquele com Morgaine. A par deste novo ator político, Morgaine é afastada da corte regressando às suas raízes pagas. Depois de uma morte deveras chocante (ao estilo de GoT), a sacerdotisa percebe, finalmente, qual devia ter sido o seu papel no reinado do irmão. Por sua vez, Gwenhwyfar abraça o fanatismo religioso. 👇

I will read the fourth book. These tales of King Arthur told through the eyes of the women of the court don’t move at the action pace as most of the legends. Still they are riveting and I wasn’t to know this other POV of the characters. Plus the tale seem to restore the tale to closer to the “actual” story more than many versions. The discussions along of how a woman of 25 was too old to be bearing children is just one moment that reminds you this is not a modern story and women had a place. Even the Queens only have so much say in their lives.

Ler As Brumas de Avalon tem sido para mim um prazer imenso que se renova de volume para volume e que me deixa, indiscutivelmente, marcada por uma satisfação plena. Exceptuando o primeiro título, A Senhora da Magia, em que senti um pouco de dificuldade em adaptar-me à escrita clássica de Marion Zimmer Bradley, esta história tem realmente conseguido cativar-me e, agora que se aproxima o seu final, posso afirmar que estou completamente rendida a esta lenda arturiana fantástica em que as mulheres são as verdadeiras rainhas.
Neste terceiro volume, O Rei Veado, Artur e a sua rainha encontram-se cada vez mais dedicados à fé cristã, propagando-a aos seus súbditos e cavaleiros que rapidamente parecem esquecer, tal como o trono, a influência que a magia da Avalon tem no actual tempo de glória. Mas Avalon não esquece e, enquanto o apogeu de tranquilidade reina entre os homens, é silencioso, mas presente, o desespero que se instala entre o círculo de poder e que se torna, de dia para dia, uma arma poderosa capaz de destabilizar o coração da nobreza.

A inveja, a cobiça, a vaidade e o ódio, pecados mortais indiscutíveis, são expostos através daquela que aparenta ser a imagem de santidade, a rainha Gwenhwyfar, relevando a hipocrisia muitas vezes associada ao cristianismo. Esta é uma personagem, pecadora e purgatória, que embora principie algum sofrimento não nos permite sentir piedade sendo, acima de tudo, uma interveniente cativante pela dimensão de emoções com que contribui para todo o enredo.
Os homens que vamos conhecendo cada vez melhor, por outro lado, são tão maleáveis que apenas evidenciam a fraqueza, desconsideração até, que a autora tem pela masculinidade e este é factor que acaba sempre referenciado em qualquer personagem, principal ao secundária, durante o decorrer da acção. Sim os homens são belos e fortes, mas a astucia que lhes é atribuída fica muito aquém de qualquer mulher que reside nestas páginas.
E no que respeita às personagens de Avalon – Morgaine, Viviane, o Bardo e, agora, Niniane e o filho de Morgaine, Gwydion – estes continuam a representar uma imagem de sabedoria para além da fé, porque a sua crença reside naquilo em que acreditam, independentemente de uma moralidade pré-concebida. Uma lição bonita. A sua contribuição para a narrativa é agora, no entanto, mais corrompida mas não deixa de maravilhar e surpreender devido às teias com que tecem os destino de outros através de uma determinação e vontade avassaladoras, através do seu desejo de verem vingado o poder magia. Nem sempre são justos, muitas vezes chocam com os seus actos, mas é mais difícil julga-los do que deixarmo-nos encantar pela forma singular com que pontuam o texto.
Em suma, e porque é impossível para mim falar desde livro de forma individual sem abranger a totalidade da história As Brumas de Avalon ou contar-vos mais do que o apropriado, posso dizer-vos apenas que a magia e o cristianismo, os homens e as mulheres, o amor e a vingança continuam a ser dicotomias recorrentes neste terceiro livro, um livro em que novas personagens surgem e algumas de destaque desaparecem mas que, no final, deixa claro a importância de todos os pormenores para o futuro desta ficção universal que, em algum, todos deveriam ter oportunidade de folhear.

Neste terceiro volume, O Rei Veado, Artur e a sua rainha encontram-se cada vez mais dedicados à fé cristã, propagando-a aos seus súbditos e cavaleiros que rapidamente parecem esquecer, tal como o trono, a influência que a magia da Avalon tem no actual tempo de glória. Mas Avalon não esquece e, enquanto o apogeu de tranquilidade reina entre os homens, é silencioso, mas presente, o desespero que se instala entre o círculo de poder e que se torna, de dia para dia, uma arma poderosa capaz de destabilizar o coração da nobreza.
Após a viragem inesperada em A Rainha Suprema, as intrigas continuam a aumentar, as falsas ligações começam a corroer-se, os interesses, por seu lado, vingam e, para bem ou para o mal, aquele que nasceu pela mão da Deusa cresce e aprende entre a magia e a fé do reino para, muito mais tarde, mas mais cedo que se julga, vir revindicar aquilo que Avalon considera seu por direito.
Proporcionando sempre novos desenvolvimentos, esta trama complexa revela-se cada vez mais emocionante. Se por um lado Avalon se mantém serena enquanto recupera face ao golpe sofrido com a falta consideração por parte do reino, na corte os acontecimentos são inesperados e constantes proporcionando uma análise de temas muito interessantes enquanto desvendamos esta história de gerações.
No que respeita às questões desenvolvidas no reino, por Gwenhwyfar, Arthur e Lancelet, temos a possibilidade de abordar conceitos polémicos independentes do tempo em que são tratados. Falo-vos de traição, mentira e falsidade que nestas páginas imperam lado a lado com os suseranos. A inveja, a cobiça, a vaidade e o ódio, pecados mortais indiscutíveis, são expostos através daquela que aparenta ser a imagem de santidade, a rainha Gwenhwyfar, relevando a hipocrisia muitas vezes associada ao cristianismo. Esta é uma personagem, pecadora e purgatória, que embora principie algum sofrimento não nos permite sentir piedade sendo, acima de tudo, uma interveniente cativante pela dimensão de emoções com que contribui para todo o enredo.
Os homens que vamos conhecendo cada vez melhor, por outro lado, são tão maleáveis que apenas evidenciam a fraqueza, desconsideração até, que a autora tem pela masculinidade e este é factor que acaba sempre referenciado em qualquer personagem, principal ao secundária, durante o decorrer da acção. Sim os homens são belos e fortes, mas a astucia que lhes é atribuída fica muito aquém de qualquer mulher que reside nestas páginas.

É difícil não me repetir quando (re)leio os quatro volumes d'As Brumas de Avalon, seguidos, sem intervalo e quase sem respirar entre eles. A mestria da autora, a forma fantástica como vai juntando as pontas daqui e dali, as histórias, feitios e feitos, as diferenças entre os discursos cristãos e pagãos, a diferença de personalidades e os respectivos comportamentos.... tudo pensado ao detalhe, num mundo onde o cristianismo continua a crescer - em crentes e em devoção e onde os cultos pagãos - de que Avalon e a Deusa são o expoente máximo - continuam a decrescer.
Morgaine, a fada, continua - tantos anos volvidos - a ser uma das minhas personagens mais queridas. A dor que sente por o seu irmão, Arthur, trair Avalon e tudo o que ela acredita ultrapassa a sua própria magoa por ter abandonado o filho de ambos na corte de Morgause. E a dúvida - dela e nossa - se tivesse ficado em Avalon em vez de ter fugido, teriam os acontecimentos sido iguais?
Igual a ela própria, Marion Zimmer Bradley leva-nos pela mão num mundo imaginado por ela. A lenda do Rei Artur, que regressará nas Brumas quando a Bretanha necessitar - tal como o nosso D Sebastão - contada pelas mulheres que o amaram - Morgaine e Gwenhwyfar - apesar de estarem das religiões de ambas serão tão dispares.
Resta-me apenas mais um volume para matar a minha sede de Avalon e das suas brumas. Perdoem-me mas O Prisioneiro da Árvore, o derradeiro volume desta tetralogia já me chama.

Again. Potentialy epic. Dismally soap-operatic. But this leads me to my dilemma. Is there ever an epic novel that doesn't have some kind of soap-operatic qualities (SOQ)? And by SOQ, I mean the creation of a world where lives build upon eachother in such a way that the mention of one name, common to the outsider, brings with it a slew of twisted plot turns and possibly forboding. Does Lord of the Rings have the same qualities, but hidden by a shroud of classicism*? Now I need to read other epic novels and tease out what made this one read like "General Hospital at the Round Table." In defense of the book, the characters were multi-dimensional; so difficult to decide who one supported. Can a reader support all of the characters at once, even when they are at odds with eachother?

Marion Zimmer Bradley es sinónimo de calidad, y en esta tetralogía de Las nieblas de Avalón (Experta en magia, La reina suprema, El rey ciervo, El prisionero del roble) lo demuestra con creces. Casi mil páginas de sociedad medieval y de luchas entre las ideas cristianas contra las paganas. La recreación de los personajes femeninos (hasta los secundarios) es magistral y relega a los masculinos a meros estereotipos (justo lo contrario a lo que viene haciendo la literatura convencional de este género). El personaje de Morgana es brutal, su peregrinaje desde su nacimiento hasta su decadencia esta narrado con absoluta crudeza y nos muestra una humanidad no acostumbrada en las obras de fantasía. Un revisión del mito artúrico imprescindible para los amantes de este género.
