With over a million books sold to date, Sarah Woodbury is the author of more than forty novels, all set in medieval Wales. Although an anthropologist by training, and then a full-time homeschooling mom for twenty years, she began writing fiction when the stories in her head overflowed and demanded that she let them out. While her ancestry is Welsh, she only visited Wales for the first time at university. She has been in love with the country, language, and people ever since. She even convinced her husband to give all four of their children Welsh names.

This series keeps getting better! I started reading this series with the prequel Daughter of Time just trying out a different story type I usually wouldn't get into. I'm so glad I did! This book starts out 3 years after the end of Prince of Time. Explaining a few updates of the characters during the time gap but really starting the suspense on the first page. The events were intense from chapter one to the last page of the last chapter, with no dull or slow moments. There were no major character additions in this book which was just fine because they were able to focus on a couple characters that were more in the background during Prince of Time. The main characters during this book were Anna, Math, David, Lili and Llywelyn. As in the past books, chapters switch between viewpoints of the different characters, but the difference on this one is that days were also switched back and forth. Due to intense events in a short period of time Woodbury stayed with one character for a couple days then would switch to another and go back to where they left off with that character a couple days before. It did work smoothly and wasn't confusing. I did check back once or twice just to double check time periods but I wasn't lost and the flow was still smooth. I wish there was a little more with the characters getting back together at the end of the book and show some of the interactions between the characters reacting to news, but there was enough explanation to be happy with the results in the end of the last chapter and epilogue. Can't wait to read more of these characters in the next book.
As much as I like this series the author really gets me irritated at times. In the beginning of the series it was how much she switches perspectives, it had my head spinning...
The confusion in this book was a lot less in how she takes us through battle scenes, geographical details and the like and I was glad of that.
My bigger complaint was that I felt overwhelmed by cliff hangers in this book. It felt inconsiderate to her readers at moments.
But you know what? I'm still going out to buy the next in the series... I'm not sure I'll read any other work of hers, but she has me hooked enough to finish this series.
Fast-paced multi faceted story. I had to keep a map of Wales in front of me while I read the story in order to keep up with all of the action. Woodbury is an exciting writer who can write as easily about war and political intrigue as she can about the hearts of men and women.
Evil portrayed in selfish, greedy people who betray kin and country
Political avarice hidden in deceit and betrayal take both Anna and David by surprise in separate events. Love complicates David’s life and devotion while pounding across Wales and into England on horseback to honor a commitment though he risks his future and his family’s safety. Anna discovers her own strength when refusing to allow enemies to destroy or ransom her or Cadell. She is no medieval fainting flower who waits for rescue but leads a breakout and escape to the amazement of all male enemies and friends in the process. This portion of the story emphasizes the impact of choices, either brave or cowardly, that cause consequences to any lives surrounding an individual. Deepening personal relationships enrich the story set against the Welsh historical environment. War on a massive scale threatens to overtake the southern coast and results from widespread betrayal isolate individual royal family members as disaster looms. Weather and terrain have long contributed to the defense of Wales and historical research describes once again victory snatched from the jaws of defeat by an unexpected act of God. This entire narrative is full of historical and personal surprises as we glimpse greater depths of character development. These characters are my family and I am impelled to start immediately on the next book.
This alternative history follows Prince Llewelyn, his son David, and Welsh history as it might have been, had Llewelyn survived the trap set for him by the English at Cilmeri in 1282. Llewelyn is now king of an independent Wales, but he fights continual assaults by English attackers assisted by Welsh traitors. Likewise, England suffers at the hands of warring noblemen and the three regents struggling to wrest power from each other during the infancy of King Edward II.
True to history, the English lords of the Marches along the Welsh border are more interested in consolidating their own power than protecting stability, either for England or Wales. As a result, this story shows constant confusion as to who is fighting whom, and who supports whom, and reveals surprising alliances and loyalties. It also shows us David's love story and four royal babies expected within seven months of each other. A little historical romance mixed with time travel, anyone?
This series (After Cilmeri) really has me going. The author has the gift of making the reader feel as if we are there. Some authors give waaay too much description; others not nearly enough. Sarah Woodbury provides the reader the information as if you were a friend(or not) of each of the main characters and as if being told by that very person, with just the right amount of detail. I am a history buff, so this type of story is my “cup of tea” The additional aspect of time-travel as introduced in the very first novel of this series was unexpected and delightful. I never attempt to re-tell the story in my own words because I would hope the reader would like to read it for themselves. I will say, however, thus far this series has not disappointed one bit. Often, series begin to “sputter out” as the books go on and on. Each book that I have read in this series stands alone just fine. You “want” to read the next book, not because you have no idea what happened to the main characters as some series compel you to do, but because you enjoy learning of the unexpected turns of these characters lives. (It helps though, that Sarah Woodbury gives you a generous sample of the next book in the series...?incentive? You bet! I highly recommed this book and this author!
I love this series which describes the adventures of a 21st century family in 13th century Wales. There was plenty of action in this book and we spend a lot of time with Anna, who was only a small part of the previous book. However, there was so much going on and there were so many pieces of a very complicated conspiracy that there was very little time for human interactions. At one point, Anna thinks about how seldom she gets to have any thoughtful interactions with other women. At the end of the book, I felt that way about all of the characters. The conclusion also seemed quite sudden, without any talk or interaction between all of the parties who had been tossed into the pot as the book went on. If you're engaged with this series, you'll definitely want to read Book 3, but this series benefits from being read in order, so don't start here.
I enjoyed the first three books in this series, but this one left me very disappointed. I'm all for a great battle description and the author's sense of place is very good, but so much of the main characters' interaction is missing. This book starts 3 years after the last one ends, so we get no insight into: Marged and Llewellyn's reconnection and relationship and being pregnant again, Ieuann and Bronwen's wedding, marriage and apparent struggle to get pregnant, David and Lili's courtship and Anna and Math's second son's birth... and death. I felt cheated and probably won't continue reading the series.
I've loved this series since I first started reading it on hols 5 years ago, and save progressing through it for when we're abroad, so it's 4 years since I last read any of it. This is Book 5 according to my kindle (but I think that factors in the half books the author throws in now and again). This was easy to get back into (memory and good series-writing make a big difference). Gripping, educational, exciting. It makes me wish the alternate universe were the real one, and that Wales were indeed already a separate country. But then that day may come sooner than we think (and for Scotland and a united Ireland, too), and that would be no bad thing.
Lower 3 star for me. It was enjoyable within the series but, for me, it didn't have the pacing & interest of the previous two books. I just found I wasn't as swept up into the adventure with this one as I felt with Prince of Time. There were still several enjoyable parts throughout that kept me entertained & I do like how Anna really shines in this book. Previously I hadn't really been as interested in her character but this caused me to care for her story more. I'm definitely continuing with the series!!
This was billed as the next book to read after Footsteps in Time (After Cilmeri 1), but this turns out to be After Cilmeri 3. So there's a good chunk of years and a lot of events missing between 1 and 3. Three doesn't stand alone well.
The series gets more repetitious as it goes along, less believable. I don't have any interest in reading any of the others.
In this book David tries to win Lili 's heart. Anna has some adventures of her own. And the English invade the southern borders by sea. A heartbreaking ending will keep the reader looking for more.
This is an excellent addition to the time travel re-imagining of Welsh history. I would recommend this book to everyone. The series The After Cilmeri should be read in order.
I loved #5so much that I borrowed #6 from the library. I love the stories wrapped up in the main story. Is worth reading...and so are the other fourteen or so others included in this series of books...always/p griffith
I just recently started reading the After Cilmeri Series and I LOVE everything about it. I read all 12 books in 2 weeks and can't wait for the next one to arrive on my kindle next month.
* I won a copy of this book in a random "sweepstakes" drawing from the author. My review below is my own personal, honest opinion and was not even requested by the author, either before or after the contest. *
Fantastic 3rd book of the After Cilmeri series. David and Anna, two young modern children of Meg, an academic specializing in medieval Wales, find themselves ...a few books back... back in time in 13th Century Wales. For how that comes about, you need to read the previous books.
David, now the Prince of Wales (in the Welsh kingdom, not the Prince of Wales of England), finds himself drawn into an intrigue where there is a conspiracy afoot for the English to attack Wales.
While the other books leading up to this one leaned more to the romance angle of the story, this one is 90% action thriller, and 10% tiny bit of romance for young David... though plenty of action interrupts the lovebirds.
Fantastic read, for fans of historical fiction, time travel, romance, action, adventure, history. Alternate History in a parallel world due to the time travel changing original historical time line. Good writing.
