The Darkslayer #4

Danger and the Druid

Rate this book
As Venir wanders aimlessly through the Mist trying to find his way home, the Underlings, led by Lord Verbard and Master Sinway's son Kierway, hatch an underling assault on Bish.
Meanwhile, back in the City of Three, Kam has her hands full with her new baby, as well as keeping tabs on Lefty and Georgio, whose friendship is splitting apart. Palos, the Prince of the Thieves Guild, has it in for Kam, and he won’t let anyone stop him from getting what he wants, which is her.

Detective Melegal remains neck deep in Royal Games, trying to hunt down the Slergs, who have Venir’s son Brak in tow, as well as trying to enact his own personal vengeance on the Cleric Sefron.

Mood the Blood Ranger and Fogle Boon have traveled deep into the bitter cold of the Nameless Mountains in hopes of finding a druid that can provide a cure for the dying two-headed dog, Chongo. But the mountains are full of dangers and surprises that even the brilliant mind of the mage Fogle Boon could never have anticipated.

I didn’t like this as much as the previous books. I don’t like Georgio or Kam. The authors need to mention the ginormous size of her breasts all the time is too much after the first 10 times. Georgio is a whiny brat and I still don’t understand why he isn’t at his own home. He has a family unlike the rest fi the characters. 😒 I much preferred Melegal and Venir together rather than seperated all this time. I don’t like the relationship between Cass and Fogle either. It was too quick and random. I don’t see any chemistry between ANY of these relationships! Sorry!! So many negatives but I had to get it off my chest.

"Aimlessly wandering" protagonists. Plus a surprise kid and a sick dog. And wenches with bosoms.

When the intro blurb for this 4th "Darkslayer" novel tells you the main protagonist Venir "aimlessly wanders" for much of the book -- you'd be forgiven for thinking the novel might not have much of a narrative drive. And you'd be right.

We have subplots of Venir's friends trying to find a druid to heal Venir's sick two-headed dog, Chongo and the subsequent "seduction" of said druid by mage Fogle Boon (it's in quote because there's no seducing, just plot porking). Melegal has become a "detective" for the Royals somehow and flitters about doing not-very-detectivey things.

And as with each of the previous three books, there are drinking house games and challenges and lots of buxom wenches. The book has a halfway decent final battle where Underlings attack Bish but otherwise, the book just kind of "happens." We've got too many characters ping-ponging back and forth and while they are doing things, none of those things matter very much.

Craig Halloran does it again in this the fourth installment of the Darkslayer epic fantasy series. All of our old friends are back with the underlings on the rise so the V man and his friends must all work to survive in this action packed installment of one of my favorite series. Shorter than other novels in the series this novel does not disappoint full of action and great battle scenes along with a deeper look at some of the characters i have come to consider friends. With a fifth book coming int the next few months you have to check this one out or grab number one and start a series you wont forget. Craig Halloran's speed at producing quality novels is amazing so no long waits for a sequel. Check out this and his many other great novels you will not be disappointed.

Balance

What I've come to admire about Craig is that he has many characters but does a good job at keeping everyone in the story. More death, more Underlings!

It's pretty much the same review. I like these books, but there are things that prevent me from loving them. More Venir/ Darkslayer and less of everything else.

I am getting bored with all the killing and hero's with no honor or character and It goes on and on. The only character that generates any empathy is Lam. Put that together with the total destruction of the English language and the only reason I got this far is free. So many authors ignored the rule of using were instead of was when expressing a possibility rather than a fact. The other error Is using the objective noun rather than subjective. I want to screa

I quit reading after so many times being told "She was as tall as him". Get an editor, please! Bye
