Can a book with no plot have subplots?

The fifth "Darkslayer" book continues like the previous four with multiple scenes/set-pieces and no discernible plot or narrative outside them. It's a supremely weird experience reading a series like this.
On one level, each of the sequences are written comptently enough and exist on their own as a somewhat interesting pastiche of derivative D&D hack-n-slashery. But that's it. Beyond that, there's no connective tissue between these sequences other than a very lukewarm "invading army" motif that just kind of lingers in the background to give main protagonist Venir (the titular Darkslayer) a reason to kill Underlings.

Because there's nothing moving the "plot" along, before you know it new characters are introduced and have their own self-contained set-pieces that ultimately don't matter either. I'm 5 books in and I can't credibly say what is happening in the world as each scene just kind of flitters away 2 seconds after completing it.

Again, the book isn't "bad" per se, but after the 34th buxom wench or 17th barroom test of strength or arena fight, one begins to wonder what the point is....

Same review as all the rest. Good, but not a masterpiece. Things I like and things I don't. I feel cheated on how little Venir/ Darkslayer action I get. I have little to no fear or worry for any character since everyone has 40 plus constitution scores. Like everyone shrugs off getting shot by darts/ bolts/ holes in the chest/ sucking chest wounds. Just gets eh after a while. But enough of being a dick. When the action is good, it's really good. Hopefully, book 6 doesn't jerk me over. I'm still having fun, still reading the next one, and still recommend it to friends.

Outrage

The story continues on with great detail and use of creative words but some of the basic words had errors, such as the incorrect words being used. Overall another good continuation of the Darkslayer series.

This annoyed me. I’m not for love triangles or jealousy and I can feel one coming on. Screw that crap. All of this was repetitive. Everything going on with all of the characters and unfortunately, they just aren’t likable to me. Melegal and Vanir I like but the others? Pfft. No thanks.

Good sword and sorcery

A good read with solid characters and situations. Enough plot twists to keep it fresh. It has gotten a little spread out which I hope will change in the next book. All. in all a solid story.
