【if you stare into the abyss, the abyss stares back at you】
The abyss, the most feared thing by the human race today. The animals infected by the abyss mutate into monsters, and humans are reduced to walking corpses.
Lu Tinghan is an abyss watcher. He has been guarding the world’s most terrifying abyss for ten years.
This abyss is not only scary, but also strange.
Throw the garbage down, after a few days, the garbage will be buried safely next to the abyss – like someone took a shovel and tossed it all night to bury them.
Throw hazardous waste down, after a few days, the waste will be thrown back with unbridled fury.
Lu Tinghan: ?
Ten years later, he left the post and became the youngest general in the Alliance.
The next day, the abyss was also gone.
——The whole thing disappeared and turned into flat land.
The whole world was shocked.
Until one day, there was a knock on Lu Tinghan’s door.
A boy with little devil horns stood outside the door, with delicate features and bright eyes. Obviously, he was scared to death, but he still plucked up the courage to say: “Hello, I, I am Abyss, can you continue to stare at me? QAQ”
He added: “I have helped you bury the garbage every day, oh!”
During their long time together, Lu Tinghan learned two things:
1. Staring at your abyss every day, the abyss will be happy
2. When the abyss is happy, it will purr toward you
This story was quite adorable despite the post apocalyptic world it's set in, and a huge part of that is due to the MC, Shi Yuan, who, despite being an abyss turned human, is the cutest thing ever. The story mostly follows him around as he lives his daily life, and anything going on with society and the fight against the infected monsters happens in the background and feels almost like an afterthought. It's an interesting way to tell the story, since otherwise it'd be a pretty sad story as we watch humanity get forced to slowly give up cities and resources in their never ending war against the abysses and the infected creatures spawned by them.
While I absolutely loved the MC and the ML and their relationship, the reason I'm giving 3 stars is that the story moved quite slowly. I'm not a huge fan of slice of life stories for this very reason, and because so much of the story follows Shi Yuan's day to day, it inevitably takes on a slower pace. We learn a lot about all of the characters that he interacts with, such as the various theater members and his boss from the call center, but I would rather have learned more about the world itself and how it came to be this way. There are some questions that aren't really answered by the end of the story, like where the abysses came from and why Shi Yuan is their lighthouse.
Nevertheless, Shi Yuan made the story for me. His constant misunderstandings of what 1 meant, how his tail gets knotted up whenever he's nervous or afraid and only Lu Tinghan could untie it, how he purs and forgets all his thoughts with a couple of head pets, it's all too freaking adorable! And we can't forget how he considers Lu Tinghan low quality because of the trash incident XP
To end my review, here are some of my favorite scenes from the story:
Shi Yuan was different.
His expression was almost gentle.
Just like when he stretched out his hands to the Queen Bee, just like when he played the God of Salvation over and over again on the stage, just as gently as when he said to Lu Tinghan, “Let me infect you.”
He replied: “I am Abyss.”
He told the secret as a comfort to the dying, it was the greatest gentleness he could give.
At this moment, the soldier was so horrified that he couldn’t speak, and after a long time, he asked in a trembling voice, “Are you that, the Abyss No.0 that disappeared?”
“Yes,” Shi Yuan said. “It’s me, I’m 0.” He thought for a while and added, “Lu Tinghan is 1.”
Soldier: “……”
Soldier:“…………”
His half-infected face had “what the f*ck did I just hear?!” written all over it.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
He wanted to carry Shi Yuan back to the car, but Shi Yuan suddenly lowered his head and hugged him tightly.
Shi Yuan said, “Lu Tinghan, I really like the things you show me! All of it! All the time!” He looked up at Lu Tinghan, the tip of his tail curled up, a little nervous and a little brave, “I don’t want to wait any longer. Maybe I still don’t understand what ‘love’ really is, but, no matter what happens, you make me especially happy every time. This time is definitely the same.”
Lu Tinghan was slightly surprised, but Shi Yuan hugged him harder: “Those things can be learned slowly, I want to be with you, right now, right away, right—ah?”
Lu Tinghan picked him up.
He said, “Okay.”
Shi Yuan hooked his neck: “From now on?”
“Yes.” Lu Tinghan pressed his forehead against his, and when their eyes met, they saw surging emotions in each other’s eyes, “Thank you for your trust in me. Our story begins now.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Lu Tinghan was still his Watcher, appearing periodically and gazing into the abyss.
After the initial heartbreak, Shi Yuan calmed down.
He felt that Lu Tinghan’s action of throwing garbage at him wasn’t because he hated him.
—But because Lu Tinghan simply had ‘no quality’.
As long as Lu Tinghan didn’t hate him, Shi Yuan felt much better.
He really liked his human so much that he could accept such a no-quality Lu Tinghan.
Later, after an unknown amount of time, maybe three or four years, maybe five or six years, Shi Yuan continued to bury garbage every day and finally dealt with it almost.
He learned a lot, including human words, pronunciation, including newspapers and magazines, a variety of strange pictures documenting human life… The garbage dump was his enlightenment teacher.
Shi Yuan still liked his Watcher.
But this didn’t mean that he forgave such mannerless and impolite behavior. After all, he had never been so heartbroken or cried so badly.
He held a grudge.
The twilight went and the morning came, and ten years passed.
In the ward of Fengyang City, Shi Yuan looked at the candy wrapper in Lu Tinghan’s hand, and said solemnly and grievously: “Lu Tinghan, you can’t litter.”
This simple sentence carried his countless grievances.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Shi Yuan's sense of aesthetics and naming abilities really can't be beat XP
Shi Yuan: “This red one is Qin Luoluofish, she always likes to wear a red skirt. This is a Tracyfish, its head is a bit like a cat. This… this is Lu Tinghanfish.”
Lu Tinghan looked at the gray and unidentified object with dead fish eyes, and was silent for half a second: “Why?”
“Because it looks like a piece of garbage.”
Lu Tinghan objected: “… Shi Yuan, don’t look at it anymore.”
General Lu vetoed Shi Yuan’s right to name the fish with one vote, leading him out of this area.
it’s always bittersweet when you just lose your interest in reading something for no particular reason other than your brain has decided to feel eh randomly
how to feed an abyss started off so well. it was giving ✨little mushroom✨ except way more fluffier. obviously, anything remotely similar to my favorite danmei will immediately catch my attention…and that’s why i’m so annoyed that i just. lost steam once i hit the 60% mark.
how to feed an abyss takes slowburn to another level but i honestly loved that, i actually prefer the slice of life genre in comparison to high stakes/high pace things, so i wasn’t really bother by how slow the relationship between shi yuan & lu tinghan was. i was all for it. except. after the two of them ACTUALLY confirmed their feelings and everything was so cute and sweet i started to really feel how slow everything is
my biggest complaint with this danmei is not the characters (shi yuan my sweet little abyss you deserve the biggest bouquet of flowers ever <3) or even the plot. the plot was fine, i really enjoyed how we kept on meeting all these new characters and was able to be immersed in what they were going through too in addition to the MC & ML…but i wasn’t a super big fan of the fact that each chapter was divided into 2 or more parts. every chapter. was like that. so instead of feeling like i read a 100 chapter slice of life it actually felt like i read a slice of life that was as long as erha
i’m not sure if that was just the translators decision or what and i can’t truly fault the novel for that considering my dislike for the chapter structure is just a personal preference. short chapters keeps my (very) poor attention better
that being said: how to feed an abyss is still worth giving a chance!!! especially if you like the apocalyptic genre but also want nonsensical fluff. shi yuan was the cutest and most naive and funniest character. lu tinghan was such a sweet ML right from the start and it was satisfying watching this tough unaffected general become a melted puddle of goo for a little abyss with devil horns and a tail. even if the plot is mostly fluff imo there are also quite a few scenes that still pulled at my heartstrings.
i don’t recommend binging this, which is probably why i ended up losing interest, so if you just want something where you can just read a few chapters here and there check out this danmei :)
Definitely a slow burn, post apocalyptic slice of life. I love the characters, their stories and how our little Abyss learned about life and death. I cried, laughed and had a whole range of ups and downs.
It's been weeks and I've read other things, but I am still thinking about them. I think that even though some arcs were not as strong as others, the overall feel and philosophy of the book makes up for it. It is rare for books in this genre to make you feel so deeply and truly ponder on our lives. This book does so in a very comedic and bittersweet way, which I found is very unique.
My second-ever apocalyptic danmei with a non-human MC lol. I was expecting something like Little Mushroom, this gave that and much more. It's hard to admit but I might like this story more than Little Mushroom!? Shi Yuan is so endearing; his curiosity and innocence are a sharp contrast to the hopeless situation. Lu Tinghan is very well-developed for an ML and his relationship with Shi Yuan is the best part. I didn't get too attached to the side characters but they did not bore me. This post-apocalyptic novel has more comedy than you'd think, but it never felt out of place. The slice-of-life moments also did not take away from the plot as one might have thought. Instead, it feels a lot more realistic. During a bleak situation, things will not just escalate and escalate till the end, instead, there's false peacefulness and very realistic situations. I enjoyed how everything was explained even the things that were left unanswered (I don't believe there were that many). It had a very satisfactory conclusion and kept me hooked throughout its entirety. . I am really glad that I found this novel on a whim and decided to read it.
I'm so glad I decided to read this book. Looking at the summary, I was so confused about what the story would be on. I was afraid it was going to be a super serious philosophical story with little romance. But I saw someone mention it slightly resembled Little Mushroom and suddenly I got interested.
If anything, I think this book is even better than Little Mushroom because of the humor and side characters that survive. Perhaps I'm misremembering, but I remember a Little Mushroom being very harrowing. This story, however, has little doses of funny thrown into the mix. The abyss is wonderfully naive and does so many funny things. And it really feels like I, as the reader, am discovering the beauty and loveliness of people, humanity, and home as the little abyss is.
I love how the abyss gets a job at the theatre as an actor (primarily for his face). What better place to discovery the joys and sorrow of living? What better representation of the ephemeral quality of human success than to try putting on an inspiring play amidst the chaos of war? No, theatre and arts are not necessities to survival, but the hope and inspiration and lessons they provide are essential to living.
One thing this book says so well is how we should try listening to others' stories. Witnessing and emphasizing with what has happened to others helps us appreciate the richness of life. And we might even find key commonalities among our enemies' stories. For example - missing home, wanting companionship, wanting someone who understands.
I think the other great part of this story, and others like it, are how brave people are in the face of what seem like impossible odd. How do people get themselves to continue living and fighting when there seems no end on sight? How do they push past the disappointment of realizing their hopes are futile in order to create new hopes? I think we need stories like this to push us to see what is possible when we don't give up.
I almost killed myself reading that ending. I’m so serious. I don’t know what I was expecting but it was not that, actually. It wasn’t awful tho I’m just very very dramatic and I wanted something different. But I’m aware it wasn’t really possible given the circumstances so… I’ll take the reincarnation trope they gave me just because it was the only way to get my happy ending. My VERY deserved happy ending, I must say.
But you guys this was so so cute. It made me laugh and cry at the same time quite literally. It was so mundane at times but then full of exciting adventures and secrets and soooo much love oh my god there was so much love you don’t understand (*´-`) I loved Lu Tinghan and Shi Yuan very very much they are just the best people ever ! I’m so glad they got their happy ending ☆彡
It took me so long to finish this one because it absolutely turned into one of my comfort novels, I just knew I was going to have a lovely time reading it so I did not want to finish it I swear. So so glad I picked this one up!
SO UNDERRATED, so much fluff and slice of life and gave me laugher, smiles and tears. gotta be honest though, i kinda hoped for more angst between the mcs and was on denial with lu tinghans sudden death, but then after reading the next chapters,, i find it very fitting for their ending
Pretty good!!! It reminds you to live in the present and love what you can and see the wonder in regular things. I didn’t understand what happens after deep dive but it’s just me.
Story and ML is super adorable! I've been struggling between a 4 or 5 rating for this one since I felt that it was somehow lacking in some areas. But after a few days I still can't get this off my mind and can't help but giggle. So 5 stars.
Takeaways: 1. Ah?! 2. QAQ 3. Lu Tinghan low quality!
