Princess Sofia lives the pampered life of a princess until her father plans a ball for her birthday. The kingdom spent many days in preparation for the event, but when the day finally arrives the princess is nowhere to be found. After much conjecture, Jack the stable boy confesses that the princess went riding but warned him to be silent. Becky goes off on horseback in search of her. Once found, the princess is masquerading as a peasant girl singing and playing with the local people. The princess informs Becky that she does not want to attend the ball because they are not true friends and will criticize her mistakes. Becky convinces Sofia to return because she will fit in if only she acts naturally as she did in the forest.

The soft and beautifully colored illustrations allow even very young children to follow along with the story. Older children will enjoy the book as a well written early reader combining the elements of fairytale, adventure, and moral lessons.
