White Wolf of Ways of the Wild Institute in Vermont discusses the proper mindset required and the importance of awareness in a survival situation. Also learn about heat loss, how to keep a coal burning overnight, preserving food in the wilderness and how to make your own water well.
This is a very short read. There are warnings about balancing one's physical, mental, and spiritual self before setting off to live long term in the wilderness. The book addresses the importance of being prepared before going into the wilderness or placing oneself in a potentially harmful situation without first truly knowing one's own capabilities. I did learn a few things from these few pages, and I have stored them in my memory banks for further trial. I am eager to practice the skills listed and gain a level of proficiency that I hope I never have to rely on.
Granted this "book" is supposed to be a collection of articles it was poorly put together. Grammar was horrible, at times sentences from one page to the next made no sense.
I felt like the author spent more time telling people how they aren't going to be able to survive and basically that anyone who goes into the wild will die than he did offering up helpful advice and instruction.
Well ... I am very interested in subject. And if you are looking for a book informative on the subject, keep looking elsewhere. This is not the one. The only useful information you would find in this book is how to get in touch with the author's school to take classes. Plus some spoilers to get your interest warmed up.
This is a very basic wilderness skills book. You could call it a decent primer or gradeschool book for the entry level hunter or woodsmen. I did appreciate the part on dehydration and looking for the signs of dehydration. Other parts were very common sense.
